Romanian singer Sanda Weigl went from famous child singer to imprisoned adult political dissident before she was finally exiled to West Germany. When the cold war ended, she immigrated to the United States, where she became known as the Gypsy Queen of New York City's downtown music scene. Here, on her debut, Weigl's strong, wavering voice dramatically projects (in her native tongue) gypsy music's inherent sense of loss and hope with the steely resolve of someone who has lived through tragedy. A large cast of downtown music's finest, including guitarist Marc Ribot, keyboardist Anthony Coleman, and saxophonist Roy Nathanson, join her, taking a unique open and improvised approach while still maintaining an authentic gypsy feel. The album is on the short side at a brisk 39 minutes, but is programmed carefully, as Weigl includes Romanian standards such as "Lume, Lume" and "Ciuleandra" along with personal favorites like "Recrutii," a father's lament over his son joining the army. --Tad Hendrickson

Romani din toata lumea, abandonati manelele!.......2003-12-18
This is a stunning collection of some of the most cellebrated Romanian songs ever, performed flawlessly by a giant artist that is Ms. Sanda Weigl. Disregard the fact that it is sung in Romanian, if you like fado, morna and soulful gypsy songs with a touch of kletzmer, all arranged to sound like they are performed in a smoky cellar, with a jazzy band of outstanding musicians, then hurry up and buy this album. Bravo, Ms. Weigl!
Thank you all for reading this posting.

Album Description
You'll be smiling from the moment this CD starts to play. The swinging beat is infectious, and the overall feel is that of a bunch of friends who truly enjoy playing music together. It is strangely reminiscent of Frank Zappa's celebrated and just as jazzy "Mother of Invention." If this CD doesn't set your toe to tapping and a smile on your face, you should probably get medication.--Cheryl Scott, Folk and Acousic Music Exchange

Album Description
An excellent collection of acoustic Gypsy-Jazz performed by this lively ensemble from Madison, WI. From Django's Reinhardt's "Minor Swing" to a cool version of "On the Street Where You Live" to a softly sung and oh so jazzy version of Lennon and McCartney's "Here, There and Everywhere", NONCHALANT sets the mood. Just close your eyes and you can feel the rush and mystique of a Paris evening.Customer Reviews:
Gypsy Swing.......2003-03-13
The Harmonious Wail fashions itself a "gypsy swing" band. Their sound is a subtle blend of bluegrass and jazz given substance with a sly female vocal, mandolin, bass and guitar. The swinging tracks jump and the haunting acoustic melodies call forth an idea that is eastern European, but it's just great musicianship, these guys are from New England. The standards they utilize are the poetry of masters: Django Reinhardt, Jethro Burns, Stochelo Rosenberg, Fapy Lafertin, and Robin Nolan.
Lead vocalist Maggie Delaney-Potthoff is superb in instantly and smoothly presenting herself to the listener with such selections as "Perhaps" and "Cou Cou." As a singer, her voice is sensuous, and that is well evidenced in the track "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To." Tom Waselchuk and John Mesoloras are proficient in their abilities to provide a detailed acoustical web for Maggie to spin through, but really shine when the focus is delivered to the instruments themselves in such tracks as "Minor Swing, " or "Armondo's Rhumba."
The presentation of the material is polished and even original in its revelation of songs that might be touted as standards, even though they are viewed with a unique synergy of styles and ideas. This album is certainly not the province of new material. If anything, it lives on the corner of new or different ideas.
