1 out of 5 stars Closer to the Main Street Singers than to the Dubliners or the Clancy Bros.......2006-03-25

This is a saccharine and banal take on Irish music, with all the emotional intesity of a Hummel figuraine. Upon first listen, I remarked to my wife that they sounded more like Peter, Paul, and Mary than the Dubliners. She correctly pointed out that Peter, Paul, and Mary were actually much better than this pablum, and that the Irish Rovers more closely resemble the fictional Main Street Singers from a Mighty Wind.

Truly, absolutely, unlistenably passionless, cloying and bland.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the Irish Rovers.......2006-03-09

Outstanding!! It's a great CD of my old LP and it's great to hear the old Rovers again.

for her medicinal compounds! This cd combines some hilarious drinking songs with children's songs. The former are well worth the patience involved in getting through the latter.

THE ORANGE AND THE GREEN provides an amusing look at the difficulties involved in being the mixed offspring of Catholic Irish and Protestant Scottish-Irish parents ("being strictly neutral, I bashed everyone in sight!")while LILY THE PINK is an amusing story about the efficacy of a woman's medicinal compounds which were some less than expected: "Ebenezer thought he was Julius Caesar so they put him in a home and gave him medicinal compound, now he's Emperor of Rome!" They also cured an indivdual with a "terrible stammer" after which "he's s-s-seen but n-n-never heard."

And of course there is the slightly more subtle humor regarding Ms. Crandall's boarding house. One should just listen and enjoy.

Grab it with a copy of your favorite Gaelic Storm cd and laugh all your problems away.

This is a great collection of songs by the Irish Rovers. No one sings the "Unicorn" song any better than these guys. For Irish Rover fans and those that never heard their songs before, you can't beat this CD. Enjoy!

The tracks on The Best of the Chieftains are drawn from The Chieftains 7, The Chieftains 8, and Boil the Breakfast Early--three of the band's recordings from the late 1970s. This was the period when former Bothy Band and Planxty flautist Matt Molloy and vocalist/bodhran player Kevin Cunniffe joined up and finally fulfilled Paddy Maloney's vision of what the band should sound like. It also marks the last time the Chieftains recorded pure, unadulterated traditional Irish music. Not long after making these albums, the band set off on a new career that has included numerous movie and TV soundtracks, collaborations with pop stars of various stripes, and guest appearances with symphony orchestras. Although some purists decry the band's later attempts at crossover, the near perfection of tracks such as the exquisitely performed suite of dance tunes "Chase Around the Windmill" show that the Chieftains had taken the old tunes about as far as they could go. The group may have gone on to make better-selling records, but they never topped the traditional grace and charm of the songs on The Best of the Chieftains. --Michael Simmons

5 out of 5 stars Irish Music.......2007-05-14

If you are going to have an Irish party, this is the best music to have. The music is varied, jigs, reels and knee slapping songs that liven up any event and get you dancing.

5 out of 5 stars Love this CD!.......2006-02-08

I love the Chieftains and I love this CD. I love it so much, I using a great many of the songs for the Prelude for my wedding.

5 out of 5 stars A blast from the past.......2004-04-06

The title of this album is rather deceptive: it's not a selection from the Chieftains' entire catalog of recordings, but instead from the 3 albums (7, 8, and 9) that they put out on the Columbia label in the late 70's. That said, it's a worthy addition to anyone's Irish music library: it showcases the band at the pivotal point when they underwent major personnel changes and began to expand into less traditional ventures such as film scores. I've owned the three albums in question for years (and bought this one because the old vinyl was wearing out); this selection includes most of my favorite tracks from those albums, and shows what a solid, spirited, high-quality band they were from the start. (But it's instructive to compare the flute solos in the "Chase Around the Windmill" set with those from the earlier albums: with all due respect to Michael Tubridey, I feel that the addition of Matt Molloy, with his thoughtful and beautifully phrased flute playing, gave the group much more depth.)

5 out of 5 stars The best of the early Chieftains.......2003-11-27

The retro style of Paddy Moloney's hair on the cover of this disc is a good metaphor for this CD, a remastered 1970s recording incorporating the best tracks from three of the Chieftains' early LPs. As far as traditional Irish music goes, it's not the purest of the pure, but it shows how this group gave a new twist to their country's music before venturing into the equally exciting realm of television and film music. If you're a fan of the Chieftains' later work, you'll definitely love this CD -- it's not really all that different, just less programmatic and commercialized.

There are some really incredible tracks here, like "O'Sullivan's March", an old 18th-century military tune arranged for the entire band -- the flutes in the middle section preserve the wonderful old fife-like quality of the original song. "Sea Image" and "Speic Seoigheach", composed by Paddy Moloney himself, point toward the group's later development as a band blending a traditional feel into their own original compositions. And the rest of the tracks show exactly why these marvelous Irishmen were nominated for a Grammy over twenty years ago.

Five stars easily!

5 out of 5 stars It doesn't get any better than this.......2003-01-26

This anthology is incredible. Irish traditional music just doesn't get any better than this! The selections are timeless, the orchestration is always perfect. Paddy Maloney's pipes and whistles really drive the music and the late great Derek Bell's brilliant Celtic harp playing is top-notch! Anyone who enjoys Irish traditional music should own this collection...preferably on CD!

In the short time since they grouped together a few years ago to form their sensationally successful trio, the Irish Tenors have already put out an impressive array of recordings and DVDs, including some bona fide gooseflesh-inducing live concert performances. So, if you still have the enviable pleasure of discovering these amazing vocalists--or want to turn a friend on to their musical charms--this compilation CD will do the trick nicely. It brings together such classics as "Danny Boy," "Toora Loora Looral," "Last Rose of Summer," and "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" (featuring John McDermott)--all rendered with the kind of passionate, heartfelt, and harmonious crooning that is their signature style, whether they're singing as an ensemble or as highlighted soloists. And even if you have the complete Irish Tenors, this anthology includes several numbers not found on their previously released CDs. Hard to think of a sweeter treat for a fan of singing too good to ever go out of fashion. --Sarah Chin

4 out of 5 stars Irish at it's best........2007-05-07

This album is really the number two album from this trio. It is very good and well worth the investment. The five star album by The Irish Tenors would have to be Heritage. Both albums rate high in my book.

5 out of 5 stars Irish Magic.......2006-08-21

This is my first CD of the Irish Tenors. And what a joy! I played it as soon as it arrived. I like the blend of their voices, the passion and enthusiasm they bring to this CD. What I find is a real treat is the words to all the songs are in the booklet.I love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Just got your Kleenex.......2005-12-25

I suggest a box of Kleenex for each person in the room when you play this CD or VHS recording. Mom won't let me play it anymore because she...well, you know what I mean.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2005-12-12

When it's cold and frightful here, I play The BOYZ!

So wonderful. So much fun.

Up here in backwash Maine, there ain't much, believe me. But these guys are great. Sincere, care about what they're doing, true artists.

Ah, to go to Ireland again. Well, not unless the price of natural gas recedes!

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best of the Irish Tenors is just that!.......2005-01-22

This recording is wonderful. Ronan's "last Rose of summer" is unique, the Percy French medley shows all three in great voice, Finbar's Maggie is wonderful and the laurels have to go to Anthony for his magnificent rendition of "She moved through the fair", wow!!!!

Well worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars The motherlode.......2004-07-08

Billy Connolly describes his first time ever seeing the Dubliners in concert as a classic case of culture shock! Folk Musicians back then were inclined to wear Aran sweaters so they could be easily identified..not the Dubliners! "Wild bearded goats" with one of their lead singers voice sounding like coal being poured down a delivery chute! The Dubliners did to Folk Music in Ireland what Bob Dylan did in the USA. They were raw, vulgar, unpretentious, talented, funny and, the inspiration for legions of future Irish musicians. The tracks listed on this collection are essentially the best of their original line up. My only slight criticism is that I wish they had kept the track order of the first three albums intact. As musicians, Luke Kelly, Barney MacKenna and Ciarron Bourke were of the highest calibre. This music swerves from incendary to sad and back again. This is what the Pogues sounded like in another life!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars A Blatant Rip-Off.......2003-01-03

I've long been a fan of the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem and ordered this CD primarily for two of the songs on it. I should've read the reviews, and I should've been warned when one of the songs, Eileen Aroon was incorrectly labelled "Eileen Ardon".
I can only say that the technical qualities of this recording make it unsuitable for anything one puts in a CD player. [Stores] ... should refuse to carry such shoddy merchandize. The tracks had more snaps, crackles, and pops than a celebrated breakfast cereal, and it seemed that some moron was fiddling with the volume control, so that even in the same song it was too faint to hear or blared from the speakers.

1 out of 5 stars Clancy fans, Stay away from this one!.......2001-11-05

I'm not adding anything new to the previous reviews, just giving one more warning, this CD is to be avoided. A clever idea, having recordings of not just the Brothers and Makem but other family members as well. It should have worked, as the selections are fine, but it sounds like it was recorded off the radio with the type of cassette recorder used in elementary school for filmstrip presentations. There are many wonderful recordings of this great Irish folk group, get one of those instead.

2 out of 5 stars Poor Quality - Poor Price.......2000-08-08

The sound quality on this CD leaves a lot ot be desired; the audio is very inconsistant. I found I had to turn the volume up on some of the cuts then down on others. The songs are great traditional Clancy Bros.; however the CD is missing the spark and livelyness that I have come to expect from the Clancy Brothers. I could also quote my previous review of "Home To Ireland: 28 Irish Favorites" since this is exactly the same CD. This one is, however, at a higher price. If you must have this one to fill out your collection, I suggest you buy the "Home To Ireland: 28 Irish Favorites" since it has all the same cuts, and I believe IS the same recording. At least that one is a bit less expensive.

2 out of 5 stars Uneven Sound Quality.......2000-08-03

I concur with the previous reviewer that this disc has definite sound quality problems. It sounds like the person who mastered it fell asleep at the controls. That aside, there are several gems on this disc including versions of classics like "The Jug of Punch," "Brennon on the Moore" and "The Moonshiner." On the down side, most of these songs lack the spark of their live recordings. I was unenthusiastic about several songs performed by family members other than the four original lads (the exception being the lovely "I'll Tell My Mar" by Peg and Bobby Clancy). Buyer beware: this collection is also sold under the title "Home to Ireland - The Best of the Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem."

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful collection of traditional music.......2000-04-30

The Clancy Brothers are all blessed with magical voices, and perform these songs with power. The music on this disc is traditional Irish folk that trascends time. Classics such as "Brennan on the Moor" and "Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ye" are all here. I wholeheartedly recommend this disc.

These days it's difficult to understand how big the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem were in the early 1960s. But the fact that a young Bob Dylan once claimed he was going to be more famous than they were--and then borrowed the melody from their song "The Patriot Game" for his own "With God on our Side"--hints at the level of influence they had. The tracks on The Best of the Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem were made between 1962 and 1969, and include a well-chosen selection of drinking songs, rebel ballads, and comic turns, most of which were recorded live in various concerts. The quartet belts out these songs with a good-natured gusto that owes more to the Weavers than it does to traditional Irish performance technique, but their renditions of classics like "The Rising of the Moon" and "A Nation Once Again" are still stirring. The group underwent many personnel changes in the years after these recordings were made, but the combination of Tommy Makem and Tom, Liam, and Paddy Clancy was never bettered. --Michael Simmons

The Clancy Brothers are classics for Irish music. Very good collection.

5 out of 5 stars Cover's same...songs are different.......2003-01-09

I found the sound quality on this to be excellant, but the contents don't match the above listing at all. "Rising Of The Moon" is on the CD I have, but it also has "The Irish Rover", "Whiskey Is The Life Of The Man" and many others not listed above. So contrary to many of the other reviews, I think this is a great CD & heartily recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars The Very very Best.......2003-01-02

I have just purchased from Amazon.co.uk a Columbia/Legacy CD No.CK86022 'The Best of The Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem'.The front sleeve is axactly the same as the above CD But the content is completely different. A lot of the songs are different. The sound quality is very good (I could well be back in the early 1960's listening to my original LPs) The Amazon.co.uk asin no is B000063RN6. My 5 star rating is for this CD and not the one above.
I hope this helps.

2 out of 5 stars Alas, Out goes the baby with the bathwater.......2002-04-04

In August of 1995, I saw a very detatched Liam Clancy, leaning on a railing in Milwaukee. I mentioned the recent "Ain't It Grand" release, and Mr. Clancy became extremely animated and proclaimed that, "They were suing Columbia/Legacy over that release."

A year later, brother Paddy said that they had dropped the litigation, since all Columbia's recordings that they made, were, in essence Columbia's property. End of story.

Oddly enough, Columbia/Legacy circled the wagons and left them circled after that little tiff. I am sure that the logistics of defending one's self against a suit are extremely resource heavy. But, two consecutive rehashes of the first five C/L releases tries my patience in extremis!

I recently acquired a new pc with virtually unlimited hard drive, and have succeeded in doing what I had hoped C/L would do. I have transcribed to hard disc, every Clancy/Makem recording from "Spontanious Performance" to "Flowers Of The Valley", including a rather neat re editing of the two record "Easter Rebellion" album. Does this mean that I will never again purchase a Columbia/Legacy release of "Clancy/Makem Treasures"? NO!

I am secretly hoping for a massive compilation, similar to the Simon & Garfunkel re issue. That would be, all the basic Columbia albums from 1961 to 1970, with little recordings like "Young Cassidy" and "Brennan On The Moor" and "The Bonny Earl Of Moray" included. If you are contemplating such an undertaking, please, communicate with us who hunger. Don't cling to re releasing the same nucleus of songs, time and time again. Take any one of five "live" albums and re issue them the way you did Pete Seeger. We'd die for a taste of that! You are sitting on a treasure trove of music. Please, share it with those who truly appreciate it!

Thank you.

4 out of 5 stars "Best Of" isn't the best, but..........2007-01-10

As a long-time fan of Mary Black I was looking forward to this volume. However, the "Best of" disk was somewhat of a dissapointment. The second disk in the package, "Hidden Harvest," is worth the price of admission and then some. The duets are a treat, the selections wonderful, and if you're a fan, you won't want to miss it.

4 out of 5 stars Error.......2006-04-23

While transfering this CD to iPod itune named track 3 on disk 2
INTO THE BLUE but box has SAW YOU RUNNING as does AMAZON.COM and other music store on internet.
Maybe I got a import copy with different track.

3 out of 5 stars Better to have left it alone.......2005-05-09

As a "Best Of" album this is, overall, a worthy effort.

So why only three stars, you ask?

I answer: "Song for Ireland"

My first experience with Mary Black was "Song for Ireland" on the Putyamo "Women of the World Celtic" album and I was hooked -it remains one of my favorite songs of all time.

And it was HORRIFICALLY OVERDONE on this album. I tried, I really tried, but couldn't even force myself the entire way through it.

A word of advice: If you ever wake up and find yourself a famous and widely-loved recording artist, try to bear in mind that your most-loved songs are most-loved because of the way you've recorded them.....and don't change them for a "Best Of" album - it's just counter-intuitive.

2 out of 5 stars The best of Mary Black?.......2004-06-29

I have all of Mary Blacks music available on compact disc. This album was my latest choice and it was indeed not the best of Mary Black in my opinion. Her rendition of "Who knows where the time goes" lacked the hauntingness of the original Judy Collins version.I didn't care much for her choice of songs for a "best of" album.I have put it back on my bookshelf. This album has none of the beauty of "Circus". I regret buying it and will be more cautious in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Great collection.......2004-06-26

I have owned this "best of" collection for a couple of years now, and never grow weary of listening to both discs. As previous reviewers have noted, the "Hidden Harvest" CD is truly outstanding and worth the price of admission on its own. For those looking for a great introduction to Mary Black's artistry and wonderful voice, this is the ticket. Highest recommendation.

Amazon.com essential recording

It's hard to qualify what "best of" could mean in the case of a band as prolific as Altan. This was a record label collection (the best of the Green Linnet years) and it is just that from Frankie Kennedy's slow reel, "The Sunset," through the jigs, reels and airs that they play so well. Mairead Ni Mhaoinaigh on fiddle also supplies their trademark voice, Ciaran Tourish and Paul O'Shaughnessy are on fiddles as well, Frankie Kennedy is on flute plus various instruments by Ciaran Curran, Mark Kelly and Daithi Sproule. As a bonus there is a second CD, a live recording taken from the soundboard of a 1989 concert. --Louis Gibson

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars 4 stars as a single disc, 5 stars with live CD.......2003-02-05

As retrospectives go, this is a good one, and captures the pace that Altan brings to a regular release. The entire history is represented here, at least as it was distributed by Green Linnet. The early trio date with Frankie, Mairead and Ciaran Curran through the final formation as sextet before Frankie's passing with the additions of Ciaran Tourish, Daithi Sproule and Dermot Byrne are well represented. The weaker points come from "Horse With a Heart" which has something missing in Phil Cunningham's production, though I am hard pressed to say what it is that's missing.
Perhaps the element of personnel flux is at its most vulnerable during these early days, as Paul Shaunnesy and Mark Kelly were sometimes on and sometimes off because of their day jobs. It really wasn't until "The Red Crow" that Frankie and Mairead made the decision to leap forward with this band as their career, and it is with that release that Altan really catches fire.
The shadows of Johnny Dougherty, Con Campbell, James Byrne and Robert Cinnamond loom large in the soul of this band, and in no uncertain terms they took the Donegal-Ulster tradition of Irish music and carried it from the back bothrins of Gaoth Dobhair to front and center in the Irish Cultural Renaissance of the 80's and 90's.
But, the real gem here is the limited edition version that carried a live CD with it. Having promoted them live in Philadelphia 4 times, once at my own establishment that is wonderfully recorded on tape as well as shows at Bluett Theatre, whose video capture by Drexel University is just breathtaking, I can tell you that Altan is a Very Different Beast LIVE. No quarter is asked or given. It's all hell for leather and the sheer dynamics of this band wrung you out emotionally, left you dancing ecstatically like some Celtic Dervish or Gaelic Pentacostalist. Their passion live has surely been responsible in part for the Irish American baby boom of the last decade! Green Linnet presents a great, great snippet of their live material, which underscores the whole issue that somewhere, someone, everyone should be hammering IMN, their management company, to get a live box set out, live DVD out, especially of the years helmed by Frankie. The Cabin John appearances in the early days of the DC Irish Folk Festival, following Ashley Mac Isaac, were perfomances of legend. Not to be outdone by the peripatetic Mac Isaac, Frankie and Mairead rose to the challenge and left a crowd of dazed enthusiasts in sheer joyful abandon. Roll the tapes forward and appearances at The National Geographic Society, Wolf Trap, following The Rankins and Natalie Mac Master, are all very possibly the greatest festival performances ever given by any band. Think Duke Ellington at Newport! Their performance here at Duffy's with Mearta Wagar and Brid Ni Chostelloe is still talked about and all I can tell you is that these tapes are the most precious things in my life. I've given you direction where to get some of the masters, so get on with it! This is a band whose every burp should be documented, especially live. Irish music was never this good before and it will never reach these heights whenever they finally hang up their bows and pocket their plectrums.
If record companies and management companies still drop the ball, go catch them live, even if you have to book airfare to Ireland. They have always been and remain the best. Look up "keepin it real" in the dictionary: Altan invented it.

5 out of 5 stars got to Altan through Dolly Parton.......2002-09-10

I discovered Altan on a Dolly Parton CD called Little Sparrow which I highly recommend also. Altan backs up Dolly on 2 songs that I really like. So, I am always up for a gamble. I bought Best of Altan. It has been on my frequent flier list since it arrived a few months ago. I am a fan of bluegrass and acoutic music in general and I think you will pleasantly surprised by this CD (I should say CD's because it is 2 disc set) if it is your first attempt at Celtic music. I have a couple of previously purchased Chieftans CD's but I must say I don't have the connect like I do with Altan. If you are a closet bluegrass fan but don't like "twangy voices" as I hear from some friends, I think you will like Altan. It is obvious that roots are there instrumentally and the musicianship is outstanding. Not one track is anything but flawless to my ear. I will buy more Altan I just have not made up my mind which CD to get yet. Not that there are similarities but I also like Mozart, Del McCourey, Steve Earle, Dolly Parton, Patty Loveless, Emmy Lou Harris, Earl Klugh, Los Lobos, Ry Cooder, Keb Mo, Nickel Creek, and countless others. These are just the ones on my current playlist. Anyway buy this disc. It makes great background music or is terrific for playing loud and listening to every detail!

5 out of 5 stars If you like Altan.......2001-08-23

you'd probably like Barachois, an Acadien group of 4 hailing from Prince Edward Island, Canada. Their fast-paced fiddling is incredible and fun.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible and Incredibly Excellent Traditional Celtic.......2001-05-24

Skilled, practiced, perfectly executed fast reels and jigs. The best version of Dulaman I've ever heard. The bonus CD crackles with the freshness only live performances can give, and I have been known to play track 1 (Con Cassidy's/Neil Gow's Highland/Moll and Tiarna/McSweeney's) as many as seven times in a row. Lovers of Riverdance will love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars An Incredible Purchase.......2000-09-27

I bought this recording having done very little research on the group, but I knew enough about them to know that what I was getting myself into was special. This quintet has the unbelievable ability to alternate between any style of music: love songs sung in gaelic, mazurkas, ballads, vocals, instrumentals-- they do it all. Another pleasant surprise which is not printed on the case is that the recording comes with a bonus live CD that contains another 7 or 8 songs. As an enthusiast of the sound of "live" music, I was thrilled with the bonus CD. I can listen to this CD no matter what mood I am in, and the end result is always the same: pure happiness.
