One of the great fado singers working today, Cristina Branco returns with Ulisses, a lush-sounding album that now more than ever separates her from fado convention. Rather than the typical guitar trio backing, Branco adds piano throughout to a guitar quartet that is, as always, led by Portuguese guitar player Custodio Castelo. Between Castelo's pyrotechnics and the piano adding a richer harmonic element, the elegant music sounds more appropriate for classical music recital halls than the fado clubs. Branco's voice smolders with nuance throughout, soaring but never overpowering the backing. A reference to the title, the material here sometimes comes from poems and tunes far beyond her homeland--Branco even offers English speakers a not-at-all-stiff version of Joni Mitchell's "A Case Of You." The electronic-oriented "Fundos" ends the album on an odd note but serves as an emphatic reminder that Cristina Branco is not content to sail exclusively in traditional Portuguese waters. -- Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars The best cd of Cristina.......2007-06-29

For me this is the best cd of Cristina Branco for many reasons, is not only fado, She sings like an angel in this cd, I like to hear Cristina cantar in spanish Alfonsina y el mar.
Sete pedaços de vento è the best song of fado I ever listen in my life

5 out of 5 stars A special disc, pure enjoyment.......2006-09-25

Having a couple of other recordings by this fabulous fado artist compelled me to get this copy of ULISSES. By far, the most enjoyable and well done disc thus far (at least in my collection) of Cristina Branco.

This disc, above all others, clearly displays that she is a world class vocalist in any genre and language. Selections in her native tongue along with an unexpected Joni Mitchell as well as French lyrics puts this artist in the spotlight and center stage. The musical arrangements and recording quality adds to the enjoyment of this disc.

This is a must have for any Fado enthusiast and Cristina Branco fan.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful example of excellent world music.......2006-09-10

Cristina Branco is one my favourite singers in Portugal. Her beautiful sweet voice soothes my soul. Unfortunately she's not very well known in her own country. I know what I'm saying cause I'm portuguese and live in Portugal.
This new CD "Ulisses" is awesome, her best to date in my opinion. Comparing to previous Cristina's CDs this one is really a voyage (as the title suggests) including a wider range of musical styles, obviously influenced by other cultures, but always capturing the emotion and vision within a genuine fado singer. Obviously this CD is not for purists, and I'm glad I'not a purist. I'm particularly fond of the tune "Alfonsina y el mar" (sung in perfect castellano) which I know in other versions but none of them as good as this one. "Porque me olhas assim" a great Fausto tune, is another one of my favourites, with exquisite arrangement including the beautiful piano (Ricardo Dias) and portuguese guitar (Custodio Castelo). I presume the arrangements have been written by all musicians as that is not mentioned in the booklet (which is a pity and the only negative remark I make).
Cristina Branco is definitely a great world singer, included in a new generation of portuguese singers getting to be known abroad such as Dulce Pontes, Sara Tavares, Mariza, Ana Moura, Misia, Teresa Salgueiro (Madredeus) etc. I'm proud of them all, but Cristina is my first choice.

5 out of 5 stars A Portuguese Carla Bruni.......2006-08-04

Excellent work; this woman is obviously talented enough to reach beyond her genre (I generally am not a fan of this type of music since it usually sounds regurgitated).

And what a great cover of Case Of You!

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2006-06-20

I am speechless! (I don't know Portugese)

This is the first album I have heard from this musician, and I am already a major fan!

After listening to it a few times you will probably want to learn Portugese!

4 out of 5 stars Conversations in a new language - Ulisses Rocha.......2000-12-01

Ulisses Rocha's debut recording "Moleque" is part of a series of first releases by recently launched Malandro - Records, so far focusing mainly on current guitar-oriented Brazilian Music, but scheduled to cover the talents of a wide spectrum of contemporary brazilian artists, including the well-known Trio da Paz, woodwindplayer Carlos Malta and a series dedicated exclusively to legends of Brazilian Music. Rocha's music, "a mixture of languages" as he calls it, defies classification but pays reverence to the influences that he has encountered on his artistic path, first as an accomplished classical player, then as an autodidactic fan of progressive rock while only later diving into jazz and his country's native music. During his long association in the 1980's with the reknown guitar trio D'Alma he found himself discovering that "... it is difficult to attain a personal sound on the (electric) guitar - with the acoustic, it's natural", and since has made the acoustic guitar his main voice of expression, performing with artists such as Gal Costa, Hermeto Pascoal, Eliane Elias, Cesar Camargo Mariano and Al di Meola while also keeping busy as an educator. On "Moleque" Ulisses Rocha has distilled the essence of his musical talent into an original, fascinating sound that points to a new era in Brazilian instrumental music. Relying solely on the exquisite, understated support of bassist Pedro Ivo and minimalist percussionist João Parahyba, he has expanded his instrument's potential beyond its traditional role of accompaniment, evolving what he explains as a new "guitar syntax" designed to match the harmonic and melodic independence of the piano. Tom Jobim's opening "Agua de Beber", set to the funky pulse of Samba-Reggae, as well as the lyrical "Bye Bye Brasil" by Roberto Menescal, are tasteful modern treatments of these classic brazilian songs; Edu Lobo's driving "Ponteio" is a particularily intoxicating feature of Rocha's virtuoso capacities and crisp articulation, rising from a rapidly oscilating ostinato pattern indigenous to the music of Brazil's Northeast. Yet, transcending period or genre, this trio's accoustic transparency lends "Moleque" a refreshing sonic simplicity that seems to impart a wonderful timelessness onto Ulisses Rocha's six original compositions, especially the graceful "Patagonia" , "Manhã" ( an intimate little ballad dedicated to his daughter ), the unplugged Hip-Hop of "Negro" or the delicate spaciousness of "Nós E As Horas". This is a recording of great depth - Brazilian at heart, global in spirit - an age-old sound ( guitarist Oscar Castro-Neves contributes historically insightful notes ) forged by the eclecticism of a new generation.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning album from Uilsses Rocha.......1999-12-27

I was extremely fortunate to receive this CD from a friend who imported some from a stand at the American Jazz Convention. It is on the Brazilian Jazz label, which contains in it's catalogue some interesting work from a wide range of styles within the genre. Ulisses Rocha's recording is quite simply one of the finest examples of Latin jazz guitar work it has been my privelege to listen to. Many guitarists can boast a high degree of technical accomplishment, but Rocha has all this and more, never allowing his considerable virtuosity to overshadow good taste. I have listened to this album for over a year now, and still find new things in it. One can only marvel at the sheer beauty of this work, and I can only assume that the reason he is not so well known is that he has recorded on a relatively obscure label. A stunning debut: 5 stars.

Ulisses Rocha is one of the most respected and influential acoustic guitarists in Brazil. His style is very unique, sophisticated and mixes a lot of information from different sources like classical, jazz and Brazilian music. On this CD he plays solo and presents us with 5 new compositions. The opening track "Desatino" is breath taking. He also recorded his 10 Studies, a set of pieces that not only sound as beautifully written music, but also work for guitarists to improve their skills on the instrument.

Rocha (guitar) and Cardosa (woodwinds) are two talented musicians paying great homage to Brazilian traditions while performing in a contemporary jazz based style. I feel that the flute/guitar tracks are the strongest of the bunch. These gentlemen show both chops and musicality at every turn. It is a shame musicians such as these don't get more notice in the jazz community (a community known for the existence of 5 great unknown musicians for every well known performer!). Great listening for all Brazilian jazz fans!
