This is a great CD to relax and do yoga to. Someone gave it to me before the birth of my first child, and it was a great lullaby for her as well!

5 out of 5 stars Fan from Down Under says "It's a ripper"!.......2007-04-06

I have no idea what the bloke below is talking about. Once again, the Sikh Princess is back in the house with an absolutely fantastic album!

Good for listening, meditation and general relaxation! Anyone, regardless of whether you believe in god or not, can listen to this CD and feel a sense of peace and a deeper connection to their soul.

If you've heard her previous stuff, it is different from that (as always) which is a good thing. Thanks Snatam!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-03-22

With albums such as Grace and Shanti, I was really impressed with the direction that Snatam Kaur was going in. In the enjoyment of her music, and with the release of this new album, I decided that I must purchase Anand. However, after listening to this album, there is nothing really new. In fact, the melodies are repeated and repeated with no movement and direction, and the content is also very repetitive. At least with songs in Grace and Shanti, and also Prem, there is variety in her music. So for me, Anand is not really one of the best albums. With such a wonderful voice, I would expect Snatam to involve more creative writers to allow her to develop her true potential

5 out of 5 stars PROFOUND AND AMAZINGLY SPIRITUAL.......2007-03-19

THIS CD IS THE BEST EVER OF SNATAM KAURS. SHE HAS OUTDONE HERSELF THIS TIME! YOU CAN ACTUALLY FEEL HER SPIRIT AS SHE SINGS THESE SONGS. SHE IS AN AMAZING PERSON AS WELL AS SINGER. IF YOU NEED TO GAIN SOME PEACE IN YOUR LIFE OR JUST WANT TO DO A LITTLE SOUL SEARCHING, THEN THIS IS THE DISC FOR YOU. SIT BACK, LISTEN AND ENJOY AS HER SPIRIT AND THE SPIRIT OF GOD FILL YOU FROM HEAD TO TOE WITH PEACE AND TRANQUILITY.

5 out of 5 stars Another Step Higher.......2007-03-07

I have a number of albums by Snatam Kaur and have been fortunate enough to see her at the Ashram here in Altamonte Springs, Florida during Winter Solstice. Each album gets better. This one is produced by Thomas Barquee. While you're at it, you should check out his album "The Sound of Om" because it's fantastic as well. Between Snatam's expanded experience as a musician and spiritual seeker, and Barquee's experience as a producer and musician, a fantastic combination emerges. Very beautiful, relaxing, contemplative, yet brimming with energy. This is not just an album to chill out to, but a great album to actively listen to or practice yoga to.

For those who are new to Snatam, many of the lyrics come from Kundalini Yoga. If you can only get one of her albums, this would be it. The others I would recommend include "Celebrate Peace" and "Grace."

5 out of 5 stars Sacred Music at its Very Best.......2007-02-22

Snatam is one of today's most popular New Age artists; in 2005 she was the only performer to place THREE albums in the New Age Retailer's Top 20. Snatam now adds to her series of superb recordings (like "Prem," "Shanti," and "Grace") another absolutely brilliant CD. There's a beautiful balance between slower, more contemplative music that pulls you effortlessly into meditation, and faster tempo pieces that make you want to dance. If you enjoy contemporary sacred music, be sure to check out this terrific artist.

5 out of 5 stars Heavenly Bliss.......2006-11-02

This is a beautiful album that reaches into your heart and soul. Snatam Kaur is an angel with a heavenly voice. It is excellent!!!! I highly recommed it as well as her other CDS.

Love, Love, this album.......so soothing and peaceful. My husband even enjoys it, when we're in the car he'll ask to have it playing. I'd purchase again for sure.

5 out of 5 stars PARADISE.......2001-06-02

As soon as I heard the first song I felt like I was far, far away from all chaos. Lying in bed I felt like Cleopatra, like a goddess, and was entranced with each beat and soothing rythm.

5 out of 5 stars It flies..........2000-03-04

The music is incredibly soulful. To me, it feels as if it's flying -- just taking wing and bringing me along with it. Listening to it is always a joy.

1 out of 5 stars the Music Of Everyday Ecstasy.......2000-01-14

if I could return it I would the music lacks any direction and seems to merely try to copy other performers work it is nothing but an attempted to capitalize on a popular book if anyone of the people who performed on this album have a musical education I would be amazed since they they show no consistent meter or rhythm don't waste your time or money on this loser

5 out of 5 stars India is the film capital of the world..........2004-07-09

This CD from David Byrne's former label is one of the best compliations of Indian Film music available. It does seem to now be in the category of "out of print" - which is too bad for Indian film music lovers. At least there are used copies still floating around. Snatch one up if you can.

The CD revolves around the music of Vijaya Anand, the "Musical Director" and composer of the music of the songs on this CD. There are a great variety of songs here, from a great variety of performers, all of them are amazing musical experiences. "Aatavu Chanda" (or "Dancing is Beautiful") is a beautiful song that will have you dancing (how about that?) with the first tones of its driving bass riff; "Naane Mabaraja" (or "I am the Emporer") includes sampled banjo, which gives the music an almost country feel that is infectious; "Nalleya Savimathe" (or "Lover You Speak Beautiful Words") is lavishly spread thick with gorgeous strings -the melody and harmonies are unforgettable.

As with most Indian Film Music, it may sound derivative to Western ears, but it really has evolved into its own musical style out of the rich mesh of style it borrows from (rock, country, Indian classical music, etc.). Also, these songs all had their genesis in a movie; all were musical numbers with accompanying dance routines and plot lines. So these songs are extracted from their original context which for most Westerners will be very difficult to reconstruct (or possibly comprehend). Still, the music stands up on its own and is enjoyable in its own right.

The CD booklet contains translations of the lyrics (though also a disclaimer that the original lyrics were translated from Kannada and Tamil into Tamil, and then presumably into English), and much information about the Indian Film scene. The back cover displays a surprising statistic: India produces at least four times the movies that Hollywood does per year (at the time of this CD the numbers were 789 to 151). Also included are amazing pictures from Indian Film posters. The context that is lost from extracting this music from the films is somewhat regained by all of the information the booklet provides.

This was one of the first CDs of Indian Film music that I came across (it was released over 10 years ago); for all I know it was the first major (or, at least, semi-major)label release of Indian Film music in the United States. For years I searched in vain for more (but this was before the internet completely removed the concept of scarcity from musical recordings). I'm happy to see that other compliations of this great music have sprung up in great numbers in this country (helped, no doubt, by the burgeoning Indian population here).

Even to this day, whenever I put this CD on, at a party or for a friend, it touches someone and they demand to know what it is so they can get a copy. People of the most diverse musical tastes seem to be drawn to this CD. So, that being the case, if it is out of print, that is doubly regrettable. I hope everyone who wanted copies found them. As for me, this CD has been in my collection since I first spotted it in 1992, and gets more than regular spins, and will likely continue to spin until it wears to dust.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST MUSIC EVER MADE.......2003-02-26

I wholeheartedly agree with the people above. Dance Raja Dance is one of the best works of art I've ever heard. I'm serious. Granted, you probably won't realize how good it is the first time you hear it. But after, wait a little while, and you'll slowly hear the haunting melodies fade up in the back of your mind, and that's when you realize... it has become a part of you. I know. It happened to me. The beautiful, yet harsh, almost overdriven vocal recordings are easily reason enough to buy this album. It's unlike any music I've heard; it has absolutlely no form to it. It takes you EVERYWHERE. It's like... a shapeless, colorful, all-knowing mass, not held down by words like "genre", or "key signature", or "distortion". This album demonstrates a very strange musical phenomenon, where nothing sounds out of place, because EVERYTHING sounds out of place. The shrill, yet captivating female vocals are particularly mememorable, and the skillful guitar playing deserves an honorable mention. Especially the solo on track 4. Personal favorite tracks are 1,2,4, but it's golden throughout.
    DANCE, RAJA, DANCE!!!

4 out of 5 stars Vi Jaya Anand is a GENIUS!.......2001-11-08

ok well.......maybe not. Back when I used to work at a record store, a co-worker and I would get bored and dig into the used cd section to see who could find the most horrible cd to annoy our customers. I found this one and since that day I have reigned as the king of bad cd fetching. This album is just full of awesome stuff! From the clippingly horrid production to Vi Jaya Anand wearing a miami vice t-shirt on the sleeve inside.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2001-07-30

I bought this purely on impulse, while trying to find some typical Indian film music, the kind you hear in restaurants while munching on pappadoms. It's a riotously funny experience, and is also very clever. Anand mixes up all kinds of Western styles in an Eastern fashion, so you get spy movie ballads with Eddie van Halen-goes-Bombay guitar, 'Elvis movie' songs with wailing singing, and lots of other permutations that will have you hopping in your seat. It's light on Indian instrumentation, and quite hip-hop in places, but lacks the monotony of that kind of music.

The singing is incredible, with the two featured vocalists doing things that most opera singers can barely do. My favorite track is "Aase Hechchagideh" -- ... It really makes you want to see the movies these songs come from...

5 out of 5 stars CRAZY HINDI PARTY TUNES RULE!.......2000-06-13

I first heard this album when a friend of mine gave it to me as a gag gift at my high school graduation. Lo and behold, I loved it! Ms. Anand has quite a way of wrapping her tongue around a melodic phrase. I believe the album was mixed by DJ Towa Tei from DeeeLite, which, as you can imagine, makes for a record as fun as purple leopard print platforms. If you don't like this album, not only have you no taste, but you have no sense of humour or style. I mean that. Sidebar: if it weren't thirty years too late, "Dance Raja Dance" would be the soundtrack to Peter Sellers' classic Hindustani-Brit party flick, "The Party". Namaste!

Before the current vogue for mix-n-match stylistic pastiche, there was the gleefully schizophrenic cinema music of India's "Bollywood," here represented by prolific South Indian soundtrack composer Vijaya Anand. In Anand's crazy-quilt musical cosmos, Indian music cohabits with surf guitar, cheap sci-fi synthesizer effects, saucy brass, dance beats, syrupy strings, and snatches of Arabic, Spanish, and other world musics--but with none of the arch postmodern irony of cut-and-paste artists like John Zorn. Anand's soundtrack music unselfconsciously references the Spaghetti Western stylings of Ennio Morricone, Vegas lounge kitsch, synthetic Eurodisco, and his own South Indian roots, sometimes within the span of single tune. The occasional tabla break or soaring Kannada-language vocals notwithstanding, Anand's soundtracks are ultimately more global than Asian, yet somehow this music could only spring from a society of multiple identities like modern India. --Dennis Rea

Pretty good vocals, but it features some of the cheesiest synthesizer noise this side of...well, nothing. It's the cheesiest. If you can hear past that, you'll be fine. But if you need your music to sound like it cost more than 400 bucks to produce, you might move on.

This CD is a compilation of Indian film music that uses modern synth sounds and strong male and female vocals to create a fast-paced, enjoyable, and often bizarre musical experience. Raga rhythms and Hindu lyrics clash against rock'n'roll and soundtrack sensibilities. This music is VERY popular in India, and it's not hard to see why - despite being crafted as background for films, each song has its own distinct personality - humorous, romantic, thrilling, or just plain weird - and the producers will use absolutely ANYTHING to get the sound they think is right. This album proves that not all world music need be traditional.

2 out of 5 stars Throw Your Analysis Out And Just Listen.......2006-11-15

The previous review by scarecrow surely seeks to discredit twelve tone music with his/her nonsensical quasi-intellectual ramblings. First of all, there is no such word as epigoni, so don't feel small when you the reader don't understand what a "fatuous market Glassite epigoni" is (a foolish scottish freemason imposter for hire?). But, one is most certainly an intellectual epigone(correct spelling) who seeks to purchase music for the mere joy of analysing it's mathmatical forms. Composers of this ilk are trying to speak to your soul and more often to your gut, not your brain! For a better introduction, listen to Schoenberg's A Survivor From Warsaw. This is disturbing music meant to convey the fear, confusion, and existential dread that is lurking within the shadows of pop culture. War is the father of this form of music and you must only react naturally and forget about tone rows unless you seek to perform or compose them. Yes, this is not music with an incredibly high replay value, but in the most noble tradition of human art, it documents our times.

5 out of 5 stars piano concerto=masterpiece of american music.......2006-03-25

The concerto was not recorded under the most ideal of situations (union rules insisted the orchestra took a 20 minute rest for every hour of recording)and the strings in particular sound a bit hard pressed. However,in part it all adds a sense of frisson to the proceedings and Feinberg traverses his way through the thickets of notes with incredible heroism.
The concerto is one of my favourite Babbitt pieces...i hate the elitist way some of his fans talk about his music as if you require an advanced degree in ear training/mathematics to derive any pleasure from it.Even on a first hearing, there's something quite wild and zany which captures ones attention.Further listenings reveal unexpected relationships...what at first seems inexplicable, seamlessley blends into the whirlwind of impetuous activity.
by contrast,i've never been so taken with 'the head of the bed'...more straightforward and cool.Like pierrot lunaire with the edge taken out.

5 out of 5 stars Between Scylla and Charybdis.......2005-10-27

The lousy review below is actually damn funny, but in a black humor way I'm sure the author never intended. Please check out his other reviews--they're all of Milton Babbitt recordings and he actually mentions Spengler, of all people. I notice it's getting hip among the kids again to mention Spengler. Instead he should bring up Gibbon; it's the failure to stay with and appreciate developments in meaningful artistic complexity and expression (as opposed to pseudo-complex Hippie-art, clutter, for example) that, to a degree, lead to civilizations eroding away. Seventy years ago Schoenberg sounded crazy, now far less so and frankly (dear ghost of Arnold) I do whistle his tunes now and then, especially that great one from the Opus 43b Theme and Variations. If we move along in any sense (and I've my doubts these days), in seventy years Babbitt and Carter will be as easy as R. Strauss (well, at least as understandable--Strauss ain't easy!). I'm kidding of course, but it should be at least entertaining to a lot of folks. Should, but won't. Seventy years from now we'll be lucky if we're banging on logs and playing polo with goat entrails and congratulating ourselves on our genius.

The "good" review above is even funnier, damn hysterical even, and also in a way the author certainly never intended. Music like this is tough enough but a musical person will find their way through it...eventually. Have faith. Byzantine chatter like that above ("excoriated'? "ex cathedra"?! Even Mencken--80 years ago!-- had sense to only use an expression like that with considerable irony as any educated individual in these dopey modern times should!) is one of the several things that drove progressive art music right out range of our cultural radars and straight into the remaindered bins. Look how well, say, Artforum magazine managed to destroy the art world by burying it beneath an avalanche of post-modern and social-critical hooey. Anyone who would read through the precious and arcane appraisal dangling there over our heads, and who would agree with it, is already in Babbitt's camp! Anyone else will just moan and click through to a less pontificated-about work of musical art, or write stupid negative reviews mentioning Spengler. With that in mind, has anyone noticed how there's less and less appealing art (including literature) these days and more and more verbal blather about it all? It's as if no one knows how to be creative and all that's left is this ghost-like, bloodless, self-conscious critical stance. I'll take banging on logs any day to this, and we have.

The Head of the Bed?--it's fine--but I love this Piano Concerto. It's hard to convey why, it's actually kind of fun, like the Wourinen Piano Concerto, another modern fave. I could write for days about Babbitt's entertaining music without ever using the word dodecaphonic. Sorry, reviewer... and sorry, Milton. It's never really been a cool thing to claim that you don't care about your audience, especially when you know that can never be true.

[PS time has passed and I just reread the review above that I excoriated a bit and I've decided I was far too kind. I know it was written five years ago and so soon after 9/11 that maybe the reviewer just lost his grip on syntax and basic communication skills and such, yet still...]

I know I'm not gonna change anyones minds by this. I just think it's a little sad that some people can be so judgemental about music they don't understand. This music is not "sick". It's just difficult. And why would anyone think Reich is "disqusting" just because he's not an "avant garde" comnposer? I listen to everything from Bach and Bartok, to Monk and Jimi Hendrix, To Tool and Pantera, Not because I think it's "cool" that I listen to this stuff, but because I enjoy it. Music is music. And it can only expand your mind if your mind it not closed to begin with.

Two beautiful pieces by America's best composer in all times. American music is not only the big orchestra business (Gershwin), Broadway musicals in symphonic dress (Bernstein), brainwashing disgusting minimalistic pop music (Reich, Glass), or chance & noise (nothing wrong just with this, unless it is all one can do...). Note that a lot of people do not like his music. Do not care about them. After all, who cares if they listen?

5 out of 5 stars Keeps Growing On Me.......2003-06-09

I agree with the above up to a point. I bought this as a 33rpm vinyl record in the 80s when I was trying to understand what attracted me to Webern. I don't know enough about music to appreciate the logic of the sounds, as I would if I was listening to Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, or even Stravinsky, but I keep on listening to it again and again. The Triple Concerto keeps me going on my NordicTrack listening to just the winds or the strings or the percussion. Whatever the compositional technique is I'm listening to it now day after day for weeks. The attarction of it sent me over to the Notturno, which at first I couldn't listen to at all, and now I find beautiful. I hear his String Quartet is beautiful too. I've just got to find out what's going on here!

      3 out of 5 stars Okay.......2000-04-17

I am not a fan of contemporary atonal music. It sounds random and arbitrary to me, at least by itself. It can make awesome background music.

This CD is more or less standard contemporary atonal music, and is okay at what it does. The written commentary accompanying the CD illustrates how little I understand contemporary music. I could not get how Notturno was "a drama played out by the personas of the self," or how, in Pianississimo, the "bravura of 19th Century Romanticism is wedded to the more intricate and evanescent sounds of our own time."

Something about the Triple Concerto made me want to come back and listen to it over and over again. It was interesting to hear the contrasts of the three different clarinet soloists (soprano clarinet, bass clarinet, contrabass clarinet). I had never heard a contrabass clarinet before; its seismic rumble dominated the low tones, while the soprano clarinet dominated the high tones. The bass clarinet, for some reason, seemed reticent by comparison.

I think that all three pieces work best when the listener is busy doing something, such as schoolwork or housework, with the music hovering in the background, only semi-consciously heard. If one tried to focus one's attention on the music itself, I think he would be bored out of his mind.
