Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Coluche: a stand up comedy genius.......2003-12-05

The late Coluche was a character in every respect. He was most active in the 80's, that is when he was at the top of his game. He is my favorite stand up comedian. His favorite subjects were politics, as well as social and cultural commentaries. Don't let his folksy appearance fool you, this is a very well read man who has often been accused of recycling Voltaire and other classic writers and philosophers. He loved making fun of injustice and he also fought it admirably by founding a charity with his fortune. It was a soup kitchen for the homeless called "Restaurants of the heart". He was a huge motorcycle fan, ran the Paris Dakkar Rally and set a world speed record off-track. Rumors go that under his funny and jovial appearance there was a sad man. His untimely death in a motorcycle accident was a suicide, or so many surmised. No one ever confirmed it.

This collection of skits is great, but to fully appreciate it you will have to have a native's command of french and of the culture. Many of his jokes are simply impossible to translate, as are most stand up acts. They are based on current or past events, and the references are easily missed. I grew up in the 80's and still today after several listenings I get new jokes or allusions... Never gets old... Thank you Coluche.
