4 out of 5 stars Nice compilation.......2007-05-07

It was good to recover the feeling of these powerful love ballads. Not all of them elicit the same feeling in me, but, hey... this is music. In my view, the first two songs already justify the purchase. You can take the rest as "bonus" features. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Oh. My. God........2005-07-13

How could I forget these songs? This, along with both Monster Ballads albums, are all you need to rock with your lover, Hair Band-style.

I couldn't even remember some of these by their titles. But when I heard *that refrain* at 1:18 on Tesla's Love Song, I nearly cried.

Every song took me back. I was about 13 when most of these (along with the selections from the aforementioned albums) were hits. I went to see Skid Row and Warrant and Trickster in concert. Of course I also loved Bon Jovi, Poison, Guns n Roses, etc. Loved this era!

A must have if you're a fan of the genre!

5 out of 5 stars Can't Fight This Feeling (and Don't Want To).......2005-07-13

One of the best compilations of power ballads on the market, "Feel Like Makin' Love" runs the gamut of emotions, from a longing for love, to loving so hard it hurts, to lost love and heartache. You'll experience the raw emotions each song has to offer as these musicians put their feelings on display for everyone to see.

This CD may help you to relive a long lost love, put an exclamation point on what you might be feeling now in a current relationship, help you visualize the dreams of your heart and soul, or emphasize the ache and emptiness of a broken heart.

Even hard rockers have a romantic side, and this CD exhibits their rough-but-gentle, heart-felt souls. Bad Company "Feels Like Makin' Love," The Scorpions try to rekindle a betrayed heart in "Still Loving You," Foreigner wants to know what love is, REO Speedwagon "can't fight this feeling anymore," Boston's Tom Shulz can't wait to tell "Amanda" how he feels, Cheap Trick remembers a lost love, Winger is "headed for a heartbreak," and Bad English says that everything's all right "when I see you smile."

These songs will have you smiling, sighing, wishing or crying, depending on your mood when you listen to them. If you're ready for a flood of raw, unbridled emotions, then you'll want this CD, and its companion, "Love Bites."

But beware: once you listen to this CD, you'll never be the same again.

5 out of 5 stars The Lost Ballads of Rock, Now Found.......2002-12-21

Wow, I am throughly amazed that I finally found the music I've been looking for for years. This had the best of cheap trick, Whitesnake, and old song of Ratt, and many others. You cannot find most of these songs, musicians in stores anymore. It is very few and far between when you can find 1 tape of the group let alone get everyone you want to hear on 1 tape. I think I have fallen in love with Amazon.com. Thanks for helping me find my music Again.

5 out of 5 stars romantic feeling revisited.......2001-10-11

for any fan who has a romantic soul, the songs on this cd will bring out all the feelings you have been through. from falling in love to losing a love, this cd has it all. i recommend this cd for the different artists and the soul of the music. LOVE LIVE ON!!!

Amazon.com essential recording

James Brown's status as one of the hottest live performers translated into a string of absolutely massive in-concert albums, but none are better than this outrageously funky outing. This is the only live CD available with Bootsy Collins and the original JB's posse, and Brown leads the incendiary ensemble through an airtight set. Only "Georgia on My Mind" reaches for the dimmer switch, but the point by then is immaterial coming after the ridiculous onslaught of "Brother Rapp" and "Ain't It Funky Now"--try to find the impossible seam between those two tracks. A hazardous slipstream of soul! --John Corbett

5 out of 5 stars Whe God throws a party, this is what He plays.......2007-06-25

The first few minutes of "Ain't It Funky Now" and "Give It Up" are the Rosetta Stone of what it means to make a funky sound. It just don't get no funkier.
Paris sure got it goin' on; this is yet another killing live show from the town that makes everyone play at the outer limits of their abilities.
I took the funkiest tracks from this and the Dallas '68 JB cd and put them together on my mp3 player for running, and I can blow out mile after mile without even noticing; take out the ballads and those shows are like a lightning bolt.
The Maceo JB band was super tight, and this band was super rubbery. Both were extreme Funk, inventing the genre as they went. No one has come close to this day; this is the fonk from the Source itself.
JB was the original black power superstar, and in 1971 he was a true revolutionary. That power fairly crackles throughout this recording, and when it busts loose on Ain't It Funky, New Day, Sex Machine and Give It Up, there is an almost mystical energy created, like the sound a sperm might make when it beats the pack of a hundred million and slides in to the egg first.
Bootsy is 19 here (!!!), and he and his brother Phelps bring a loping intensity that has never been equalled; this may be the funkiest bass playing ever captured on tape. I've loved JB since hearing Brand New Bag in grade school, and always knew there must be a live recording that captured the essence of him at this funkiest.
Here it is.
James' voice wavers at points (ten shows in six days in Paris, just another stand in yet another town...hardest workin' man in show biz indeed), but his energy and conviction drive his band to the height of heights, funktually speaking.
Just program Ain't It Funky on your cd player to wake you up. You WILL get up and dance in the shower.
Good God!

5 out of 5 stars The greatest album ever recorded - period.......2007-05-08

I first heard this album played in its entirety on a local soul radio station in New Orleans on New Year's Day in 1996. I was hanging out at a friend's apartment in an old acadian-style house just a few blocks from Tipitinas. The DJ was taking phone calls from listeners who were calling in with their New Year's resolutions. I remember on old gentleman calling in saying "from now on, I'm only going to drink when I'm by myself or when I'm wit somebody". The driving funk of James Brown live in the background was totally infectious! None of us could sit still - we danced and spun and jumped around until we were all breathless and falling down on the floor laughing. Just when we thought we were going to get a break, JB would plow into another crazy energized funk masterpiece, and we were on our feet again, dancing like maniacs - even the people who would normally never dream of dancing with anyone watching. We headed over to the quarter later that day and I found "Love Power Peace" on CD. I had some older James Brown on CD - live at the Apollo, etc. - but THIS was something different. "Love Power Peace" has been my favorite CD of any kind of music ever since. I was fortunate to see James Brown live in concert a couple of years later (I remember seeing him perform on TV as a young child and loved him even then). We listened to "Love Power Peace" all the way to the show and all the way home. The energy and music of "Love Power Peace" IS James Brown. Everybody should own this album.

5 out of 5 stars This tops even your highest expectations.......2007-01-13

Usually for a superstar musician, when archivists uncover some sort of "lost tape" of a show, they will hype it up as the greatest thing EVER. They will make you think that this long lost recording will blow your mind, and will affirm everything that you ever loved about the artist. Invariably, this is NEVER the case. I don't care how big the artist is, I have seen so many Lost Tape Letdowns, I can't even name them all. Miles Davis, Dylan, Beatles, BB King, Zeppelin, Coltrane, Blakey - yes the best of the best have fallen in this regard. Sometimes it makes you wonder, are these guys as good as I thought they were??? Are they a sham???

But guess what? James Brown has Soul to spare. He has Soul to burn. He always did and always will, even in heaven. And when you uncover a Prime Era James Brown Tape, it will NOT disappoint. That is 100% guaranteed. He refuses to lose. When you hear Love Power Peace, you will find everything you love James Brown for, and more. When you play this album, you will be shocked that anyone could have as futuristic sound as the James Brown band had in 1971, even though you have heard this said a million times already. When you think about this show, you will think you would have given practically any material possession you own just to have been there. That's what I still feel. When you think about Phelps' solo, you will rack your brain to come up with any solo in any genre of music including jazz with as much energy, creativity and FUNK as this one. You will wonder how he never had 10 albums of his own.

When you hear LOVE POWER PEACE, you will feel the full force of the James Brown Experience. This Experience was honed with loving skill for almost 20 years before this show. There are few musical artists in the history of the world who can live up to their hype, their Legend, their Ego. James Brown is one of the few, perhaps the one.

5 out of 5 stars ALWAYS REMEMBER JAMES BROWN.......2007-01-13

Since the great has passed on, I figured I would review the cream of the crop from the James Brown catalouge. Recently I reviewed "Say It Live And Loud", another favorite of mine. That particularly is way up there on my faves list, due to the fact that the band in '68 was so damned tight and proffesional, with the man, Maceo movin' the orchestra along. Arguably James Browns best band was that one. Huge. But in 1969, Maceo demanded more money for any futher services, and with just an hour before showtime, James Brown told him to take a hike and called up two kids that had jammed with some chick he was banging at the time... Bootsy and Catfish Collins. They pulled the show out of thin air, which pissed off the crowd that night, who were obviously expecting the tightness and precision that the James Brown Orchestra had come to be known for. What they got was the loose hooks and rythms of the brothers collins, and the beggining of something new... funk.
This is the only live recording of James Brown with Bootsy (he would soon help the Parliament Funkadelic take off) and it shows that James Brown didn't need to rely on his big old orchestra to make good music. In fact, these days, Soul brother number one, is probably better known for what he did after ditching the big band and just jamming loosely wih a couple of stanky funkateers.
This disc is almost the opposite of what Say it Live and Loud is about, but yet still as good and still as powerful. The job gets more than just done here, its louder and grittier than ever. If you are looking for James Brown funk, this is your best place to start.

5 out of 5 stars This Is The $#!+!!!!!!.......2006-11-01

Few albums get me as pumped up as LOVE POWER PEACE (RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE is up there). This stuff is so powerful, so hyperkinetic . . . the heavy funk tracks are very uptempo - it's the funkiest funk I've ever heard. I don't even care to hear the slower original studio tracks after grooving on this. Truthfully, I could do without the screaming, or maybe I'd like it better if it wasn't so loud in the mix because I play this stuff LOUD . . . but I just roll with it ya know? Cause James Brown's feelin' it . . . caught up in the exstacy . . . oh, to have been at this show!

Yes, I stumbled upon this CD because of a link at Tool. But so what. God I love this album and I'm so glad I found it. Only wish they were still putting out more of these. This album is pure testosterone and I can't get enough of it! I'm going to be playing the hell out of this CD!!
Mike Savage's voice is so deep, throaty and hot. This CD and Clutch CD's are some of my new favorites! You will not be disappointed in this one!

I think TOOL is the best band ever and when I went to there site I saw PLC. these guys don't sound a thing like Tool (exept for the drumming) but it still is very good

5 out of 5 stars Twisted, funny, heavy, dark and inspired........2005-10-12

Pigmy Love Circus is easily one of the best bands that more than likely most people have never heard of.

PYC (as I'll refer to them from here on out) have actually been around since 1987. Based out of Southern California, they became something of a cult favorite on the live circuit due to some infamous out-of-control performances in addition to some very twisted (and funny songs).

In 1992, they replaced drummers with a certain Danny Carie (though he goes by Dan on this PYC CD) . Most people probably know him from his drum duties in a little band called Tool. He played with PYC for a little while but Tool ended up getting signed and pretty much exploding popularity wise so Danny's tenure in the band was cut short. PYC ended up disbanding in 1995 after slogging it out in bars and clubs for about 8 years straight.

But in 1999, Danny Carey ended up getting PYC to re-form and they started touring again opening up for the likes of bands like A Perfect Circle (fronted by Tool's singer Maynard). In 2003, they would record a batch of songs that would end up getting released in 2004 as the CD entitled curiously enough The Power of Beef.

The lineup on the album consists of:
Michael Savage---------vocals
Peter Fletcher---------guitars
E. Shepherd Stevenson--bass
Dan Carey--------------drums, saxophone

The first 3 members are all original members who have been with PYC since the beginning.

The track listing on the CD is as follows (with the CD being a little over 42 minutes in length):
1) Livin' Like Sh*t
2) Drug Run to Fontana
3) Swamp Creature
4) Bone Orchard
5) Pistolero Sleep
6) Bad Luck
7) Murderer
8) Highway Man
9) Headless Horseman
10)12 Gauge Kiss
11)Madhouse Clown
------------------------------------------------------------

To try and describe PYC's sound is a bit hard. If you're familiar with the style of the band Clutch, PYC is kind of in the same vein to a certain extent, though PYC is more talented, versatile and varied than Clutch is.

Michael Savage's vocal style is also reminiscent of the singer from Clutch but Michael has a much more aggressive style. At some points he seems to recall Phil's vocal style from the metal band Pantera while at other times he seems to sound kind of like what Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top would sound like if he was a psychotic mass murderer. Add a little bit of Lemmy from Motorhead for extra spice. His lyrics are extremely twisted & violent and run the gamut from a guy talking about killing people indiscriminantly, being a lazy drunk bastard, killing his cheating girlfriend, making illegal drug runs and the headless horseman just to name a few.

The lyrics are pretty extreme stuff and will likely turn a lot of unsuspecting people off. But as twisted and questionable as some of the lyrics are, they are done more in the manner of him inhabiting a character of some sort and talking from that person's point-of-view. They are also really tongue in cheek most of the time, especially if you have an extremely dark and twisted sense of humor (like me!).

The music itself is kind of loud classic rock fused with metal and a touch of punk & blues as well. But the music doesn't sound dated and instead takes a lot of rock conventions and turns them on their collective heads. The music is loud and would feel right at home in a biker bar with a bunch of drunk bikers singing along while occasionally puking and beating the crap out of each other.

The musicianship is top notch and it's really cool to hear Danny Carey just rocking out on the drums. The music of his main bread and butter gig Tool is extremely complex and dense. The music of PYC on the other hand is just loud, fun and extremely dark hard rock that is just hard not to get into. Fletcher's guitar hits you like a ton of bricks and Stevenson's bass rumbles with one of the better bass tones that I've heard lately in hard rock.

The production is crystal clear as Danny Carey clearly used his clout from Tool to get them some great production quality that is one of the clearest and best sounding CD's that I've heard in recent times.

Some personal favorite songs include the driving Dry Run to Fontana which is a vocal tour-de-force for Michael Savage. Swamp Creature features lyrics inspired by old 50's B-movies like Creature from the Black Lagoon. 12 Gauge Kiss is about a questionable guy blowing away his girlfriend with a shotgun. and the last track Madhouse Clown features a really catchy and infectious sing along chorus that would fit right at home in any bar during last call.

I would've liked to be able to give more in depth descriptions of all of the tracks, but like I mentioned earlier, this is a really difficult CD to try to describe to someone.

If you are into bands like Clutch, Queens of the Stone Age, Monster Magnet and Kyuss along with the more extreme vocals stylings of bands like Pantera, you'll love PYC.

The CD might initially make you think it's going to be just another retro southern rock hard rock band, but by the time the vocals have kicked in and you've then gotten to track #2, you'll realize that you're listening to one of the most innovative, original and just plain cool CD's to come out in 2004 so far. This CD has been pretty much stuck in my CD player since I picked it up.

I'm sure that a lot of Tool fans will pick up this CD just because of the Danny Carey connection, but let me emphasize that PYC is about as far on the opposite side of the musical spectrum from Tool that it isn't funny. But it's just so refreshing to hear Danny just rocking out without any pretentious/progressive arrangements to get in his way. You can tell that these guy's are having a blast doing what they do and that's what truly counts!

3 out of 5 stars Pigmy Love Circus.......2005-08-17

If you're interested in buying this CD just because of the Danny Carey connection, then it is a big waste of time. However if you're interested in buying this CD because you want to hear some devilish, and at times, disturbingly funny good ol' hard rock, then it could be worth your while. The lyrics and stinging style, for some reason remind me of GWAR, or perhaps Green Jelly, which is always a plus. Even so, the album isn't all that wonderful, though it has a couple of moments, notably the first song. Danny's drumming is hardly even distinguished, but if you listen closely, you can hear the drumming similarities between this band and Tool. But, keep in mind, that the bands are very different.

Brendan Benson is the kind of guy who still sits by the AM radio late at night, spinning the tuning dial from one end to the other in a hopeless search for the perfect pop song. Little does he know he's considerably helped his own plight by making an album full of them. Unlucky in both love and money, the Detroit singer-songwriter has plenty to chew on with his third disc. Using wistful bubblegum melodies and crisp '60s harmonies, in tunes like "Feel Like Myself" and "Cold Hands (Warm Heart)" he lashes out at former lovers and A&R men with equal venom. "I always wind up screwed without a kiss," he hisses on the Phil Spector inspired "The Pledge." But, in the end the man who counts Jack White and Beck as devoted fans, knows impending success is the best payback. "Maybe I've been caught red-handed, making off like a lucky bandit/ This wasn't how I planned it," he gloats on the title track. It's really hard to argue. --Aidin Vaziri

This disc came up in the best of 2006. Certainly it is in my top five. Always wanted to have a listen but had no access to the net. This album features a smooth, seamless and loveable singer songwriter in the peak of his talents. it really is a four and a half star CD and will be worn paper thin before too long!

5 out of 5 stars FABULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-01-15

This CD is one of the few that my husband and I both love. Highly recommended!

2 out of 5 stars Way Overrated.......2006-09-01

This stuff isn't that good. There are a couple Cars-eque rockers that are cool but other than that I don't see what the big fuss is about? At the end of the day Benson's work is all mediocre. This is another case of "famous friends" association and hype. Save your money and pick up some classic power pop.

4 out of 5 stars MEGA POP INDIE MUSIC IS THE NEW HARDCORE.......2006-01-24

Oh, how I love Brendan Benson. His album Lapalco will always be my favorite, but this is probably his best. He has taken his obsession with 60's pop, a John Lennon complex, and a corky voice, and created a sound that the phrase "powerpop" doesn't even begin to describe. The vocals on this album match Pet Sounds (...almost)! I want to isolate tracks, but it's almost impossible. Everything is OBNOXIOUSLY catchy and makes me want to sit down and write a great pop song.

4 out of 5 stars Definately An Alternative..........2006-01-12

The main reason i bought this cd was because i had read that it was co-produced by Jack White of the White Stripes, and that Benson would soon be starting a side-band with White. Also because Benson had fans of the likes of Beck and Jack White. I was shocked to find out that Jack had nothing to do with this cd, but pleases altogether with what i was listening to.
'Spit It Out' is definately the catchiest song but seems unlike anything else on the album. Other excellent accoustic offerings include 'Feel Like Myself' and the title track 'The Alternative To Love'.
This cd does move into territory of power-pop status and for this reason is much more listenable. The lyrics are good, and clever on certain songs, and the instrumentation compliments the overall effect of the cd.
Give it a go, you'll enjoy it.

1 out of 5 stars Beware: This is Spooky Stuff.......2004-04-19

This John Tesh disc is one of the strangest CDs that I have ever heard. After listening to "From this Moment" for just a few seconds, I choked on my Cheetos not once but twice. The music was quite good, though at the time I did not realize (though I should have) the diabolical qualities of the music to which I was listening. During the first time I heard "Can't Live a Day," I was overcome by waves of depression. I know that John Tesh is a pretty laid back guy, so I'm surprised that he would create music that would further exacerbate the emotional fragility of his fans. Ever since then I have been looking for equipment that can play that tune backwards, because there has gotta be a hidden message there somewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Sweeping and emotive!.......2004-01-01

These warm, moving, lushly orchestrated compositions for piano, backup band and orchestra are actually written by just about everyone but John Tesh (and I can't even be certain from the liner notes that he played the piano leads, but I'll assume for the sake of argument that he did). Selections covered include "Desert Rose" by Sting, "Watermark" by Enya, "After the Sunrise" by Yanni, "Havana" by Kenny G, "The Mummer's Dance" by Loreena McKennitt, "Silk Road" by Kitaro, "Longing/Love" by George Winston, "Picture This" by Jim Brickman, and "From this Moment On" by Shania Twain. Not being particularly into mainstream or popular music let alone cover-performances of other people's hits, I really didn't want to like this 2-CD set, but it got to me anyway the first time I heard it through. Many such adaptations are sadly watered-down, but this release is no elevator music. Okay, a lot of it actually sounds like movie soundtrack music, especially from a modern western or an emotional, outdoorsy chick-flick, but it's good soundtrack music--powerful, evocative and effectively orchestrated by J. Eric Schmidt along with Tim Heintz and John Tesh. The results of their efforts are fresh, poignant and as good as many of the originals (though I have to say I prefer Yanni and Loreena McKennitt's original versions of their own music). All in all, nice job! If you like the music of "The Power of Love", you're also likely to enjoy the work of Yanni. Try the compilations "In Celebration of Life" and "Reflections of Passion", or his latest release, "Ethnicity".

5 out of 5 stars One of His Best!.......2002-08-03

Since recently purchasing this CD, I have not been able to stop playing it. It is so well done that I play it on the way home from work to unwind and then at home for inspiration. All my favorite songs are on this CD and it is just beautifully orchestated. Anyone who enjoys John Tesh's music will be pleasantly surprised at the amount of work but into this CD. I highly recommend it.

2 out of 5 stars More like "Pure Orchestra 2" from the John Tesh Project.......2002-06-13

For all practical purposes, this album is NOT a John Tesh album. Although the album is billed as John Tesh's, it is rather another John Tesh Project, continuing the theme of 2000's "Pure Orchestra." As a matter of fact, this album contains the entire contents of that album. In other words, for those of you who already bought "Pure Orchestra," you'll only be getting 13 new songs from a 2-disc, 26-song collection. Both "Pure Orchestra" and "Power Of Love" feature orchestrated versions of songs by popular New Age artists (the contents of "Pure Orchestra") and contemporary artists (the new contents of "Power Of Love"). While the orchestrations are very pretty and quite well done, it is akin to listening to the instrumental selections of a Walt Disney animated feature soundtrack -- nicely done, but not very meaningful unless you're actually listening to it in the context of the movie. If you liked the presentation of "Pure Orchestra," you'll like the new material of "Power Of Love." "Pure Orchestra" was, to me, only OK, and, given this, and the fact that I essentially bought that album twice, I can only give "Power Of Love" 2 out of 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Great 80's Ballad Music.......2006-03-15

If you are like I am and a huge fan of the 80's music era, then you will love this CD packed full of slow love songs from this generation. A must have collection...

5 out of 5 stars One of three great love song collections.......2004-10-05

Love Bites, along with Monster Ballads, and Power Ballads, is one of the three great love ballad collections from the eighties. Here one finds compelling compositions that actually led me to chase down other compositions from some of the artists, such as Cinderella (overall an estimable band, but with three great songs, including "Nobody's Fool", "Don't know what you got til it's gone", and "It's gonna be a long cold winter without your love"). "Good-bye" by Enuff z'Enuff is exceptional, and many of the songs similarly do not fit one genre, but stand as a tribute to the ability of hard-rock bands to make great love songs, simply by the power of their slo-mo exectuion. Well worth the buy.

5 out of 5 stars A great price for all the eighties ballads!.......2002-02-20

I have to admit I'm a sucker for the eighties. I'm also one who has suffered through many bad break-ups especially in the eighties so this brings me back to all those sad days spent crying and watching my boyfriend walk down the halls with another girl. This is music you listen to on Valentine's Day as you watch a sappy movie and eat a box of candy you bought for yourself.

This is a great quality cd with good sound and all the old ones. My favorites on here are "Two out of Three Ain't Bad", "Nobody's Fool", "Total Eclipse of the Heart" and especially the bluesy "What Love Can Be" which is kind of a rare song for a compilation. There are also plenty of other great ones from popular bands from that time. Its definitely a good one for us ladies to look back at that era and remember the old days good or bad.

All in all, one of the best ballad compilations out there. Its a great price. Yes, its sappy but a great buy!

4 out of 5 stars Attention all 80's children.......2001-01-27

For the late 20 somethings and early 30 somethings, this CD will bring you back to your high school years. If you like nostalgic 80's music, you'll like this CD. If you grew up in the 80's, listening to love ballads than you will appreciate the music on this CD. For those who do not like 80's music, especially heavy metal love ballads, STAY AWAY. You will not be satisfied with this CD.

On the other hand, those who grew up in the 80's will enjoy rehashing old times with friends while listening to this dated collection.

4 out of 5 stars 4 out of 5 ain't bad!!.......2000-08-03

This CD has a collection of what's supposed to be one of the best Romantic Ballads in the music.. The bands there, well most of them are now out of date.. but some are still giving to the music industry.. The music there is great, as to be of the old ballads that can never be forgotten.. more likely a collectors edition for those who like romantic rock melodies.. i recommend this CD as a gift to an older person, or someone who really needs to hear some REAL good music!!

4 out of 5 stars So many great songs on one CD........2007-01-29

It is difficult to find a CD that has a compilation of great love songs. Usually there are only a few - not enough to warrant buying the CD. However, this one has so many tunes that are familiar and romantic. I grew up with these songs. I watched my parents dancing to some of these and that brings back fond memories. I actually forgot about a couple of these songs until I listened to the samples on Amazon.com and decided it was definitely worth my money. The duets are wonderful. I love "Don't Know Much" and "Tonight I celebrate My Love." Peabo Bryson is one of the most romatic male singers I have ever heard. Remember him with Celine Dion in "Beauty and the Beast"? There are not many love duets these days that I could compare the duets on this CD to - except maybe "I'm Your Angel" with Celine Dion and R. Kelly. I also forgot how wonderful "Arthur's Theme" was. I heard my sister sing it karaoke recently and actually stumbled upon this song on this CD when I was looking for something romantic to listen to. I wish I could write songs as well as these, but at least I know they express the words I cannot say. I highly recommend this CD for the romantic person or couple.

4 out of 5 stars Sit back and relax.......2006-11-10

This is a very relaxing cd to listen to. Not to mention very romantic too.It has a good variety of music on it. I recommend it for a cozy evening.

4 out of 5 stars Power of Love.......2005-08-03

I have really enjoyed sitting quietly and listening to this CD. My favorite "Power of Love" song has always been by Jennifer Rush. Very romantic CD. To be enjoyed with a glass of wine and someone special.

4 out of 5 stars A great collection of easy listening love songs.......2001-03-28

I had been searching high and low for a compilation of what some may consider "sappy love songs." Well, if you happen to love so-called "sappy love songs," as I do, then you've found a great CD! Almost all of the songs on this CD are great and received endless airplay in their day. My favorite selections are the duets - many of which are either no longer available on a regular CD or just were released as singles.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Songs.......2000-07-23

Lady in Red will always be a classic....Power of Love, by Jennifer Rush, however, is one of my favorites on this disc, along with Unchained Melody.

4 out of 5 stars Late 80's power pop excellence.......2007-02-08

TPOH were alternative before there was such a term. And as such I have more time for them than anything else released that would come under such a banner. They also sit in the power pop category nicely due to their sprightly rock 'n' roll with guitar solos and Moe Bergs energetic delivery. And there is more than just a touch of Cheap Trick with this mob - the whole comedy rock and amusing anecdotes bombarding the listener with good time vibes.

This album starts off with Hard to Laugh, a fun rocker despite being about some guy complaining about his girlfriend. And that is actually fairly typical for the album. But the bands buoyant delivery and the tidy production job makes it possible for quirky, depressing or strangely touching topics to be fun to listen to. And that is a real accomplishment by the bands main man, Moe Berg, who is the sole songwriter on this release.

Looking back on this album before putting my fingers to the keyboard it's interesting how well this album has weathered the passing years. Sure, if it's metal your after, go elsewhere, but if your in the right mood this album can still provide a fun listen. It may not cure world poverty but even after all the music that has passed through my ears personal teenage anthems like I'm An Adult Now and Looking for Girls still put a smile on my dial.

Fans of Cheap Trick (their funny bits) should give this mob a look - and also any fans of AOR who might be after something a little more whimsical and less tear jerking should also give this disc a listen. It's a very good starting point to explore this band as some of their later albums such as Wheres the Bone are a little more understated and more focussed on Moe Berts vocals to the detriment of the band feeling present on this album.

    Highly recommended rock 'n' roll.

5 out of 5 stars TPOH - excellent band that slipped under the public's radar........2007-01-28

All of TPOH's cds are good to great and Love Junk rates as their best. Too bad the general public completely missed this tremendous talent.

4 out of 5 stars Good to hear them again.......2006-03-11

Had a tape of this some time ago; made the mistake of putting my tape holder over the gas tank on a long drive when I moved. The tape actually melted into the the back of tape holder. Had trouble finding the CD of it in stores; fortunately I found it here. So what do I actually think about it?

Minor late 80's classic by another great Canadain export; aggressive guitar hooks, quirky lyrics sung with abandon by Moe Berg and beautiful accompaniment by Kris Abbott & Leslie Stanwyck, all done to a boppin beat. Power pop at its finest.

5 out of 5 stars How to spot a classic in the I-Pod age.......2005-05-22

So I'm going through my old CD collection and loading songs up on my 40 gig (every song you could possibly want) monster, and I pull this disc out for the first time in at least 5 years. What a revelation. I put every song except "Killed by Love" on the I-Pod. I haven't done that with too many discs. Along with really catchy power pop tunes; there are brilliant lyrics throughout. "I'm an adult now" was the single and it is a great song, but it is far from being the standout cut."She's so young", "Conciousness raising as a social tool", and "Beautiful White" are my 3 faves. The chorus of "She's so young" is classic. "She's so young , she' got the answers. She doesn't need to question herself like I do." As my child grows into a teenager that line will begin to take on a different meaning than it did the first time I heard fifteen or so years ago. Whatever happened to these guys anyway? Great group.

    4 out of 5 stars TPOH.......2005-02-19

If you only know TPOH by the tune "I'm an Adult Now", you should start with this disc to hear more from the band. "Adult" is a good, humorous track, but far from the best the band has to offer on "Love Junk". Do not judge the band by that song alone.

I had heard "Adult" many times over, but it was when I read Todd Rundgren produced the entire disc that I actually purchased it. His "touch" is on the disc and that is a good thing!

Moe Berg is my kind of tunesmith. I really like "Hard to Laugh", the kick off track. I was hooked! Other cuts that caught my ear are "She's So Young", "Looking For Girls", and "Man's Best Friend". Clever lyrics like the chorus for MBF:
-Cause I'm not the kind you want for your boyfriend,
but I'll be your man's best friend.-
    I love it!

I know that this has been a hard disc for me to find, so grab when you can. "Love Junk" is not junk.

5 out of 5 stars A great Best Of collection!.......2005-09-17

With some people, It's easy to get carried away into thinking that The Power Of Love is the only good song on it since it was jennifer's only big hit in Britain but that's just pure ignorance. The other songs are fantastic and deserved to have been bigger hits. I think it's fair to catagorise them into three genres. There are the poppy songs such as Ring Of Ice (from her first album) the Elton John duet Fames Of Paradice, Love Is The Language Of The Heart and Destiny. They all are great pop songs; Destiny in particular. It sounds very fresh and has a great chorus. Then there are the more rocky tracks, I Come Undone sounds very dramatic in the chorus..."With a flash of your burning eyes..." There's Live Wire which is similar to I Come Undone, and Down To You. Then of couse there are the ballads. The best one, apart from the obvious!) is Angel. To me it sounded a little like George Micheal's Careless Whisper. Similar arrangement and quite dreamy at times. If Your Ever Gonna Lose My Love is second best to Angel and much more relaxing to listen to than the Power Of Love. Pleasure is perhaps the most dreamy of them all. Hero Of a Fool is not as good. Call My Name and Now That Its Over are both qute similar to each other. The remaining duets, Same Heart with Micheal Bolton and Till I lLoved You with opera guy Placido Domingo are both great! The former is dancey with a good beat and synth arrangement . Till I Loved You is, well romantic with a great sax solo! All in all, a great collection for any 80s fan!

    3 out of 5 stars Limited Power.......2005-01-10

It has to be said straight away that "The Power of Love", as performed by Jennifer Rush, is a masterpiece, a serious contender for best popular music recording of all time. If you have heard any other artist's version - Celine Dion or whoever - do not imagine you know the song. It is Jennifer's own and anyone else attempts it at their peril. It demands a vocal range and breath control that is rare and precious, in addition to a sensitivity for the lyrics.

But what of the other tracks on this CD? What indeed? They are a sad disappointment. Simplistic lyrics and uninspired melodies but worst of all, arrangements that are monotonous, on-the-beat efforts that are more suited to rap songs or Bavarian oompah-oompah music. The duet with Elton John is particularly embarrassing, with its "walk, talk" rhyming, "yeah, yeah" chorus and meagre tune.

It is a tragedy that such an immensely talented singer has not had better material and more sensitive arrangements. Still, the title track ensures her place in pop history.
