This impressionistic score from Marcel Camus's 1958 cinematic retelling of the Greek myth of Orpheus was most Americans' introduction to the Brazilian musical style called bossa nova. As it became a nationwide craze that featured both Brazilian samba and U.S. cool-jazz participants, the names of Black Orpheus composers Antonio Carlos Jobim and Luiz Bonfa became familiar far beyond the hi-fi set. Along with the haunting theme song, "Manha de Carnaval," and several Jobim compositions are the vibrant street sounds of the pre-Lenten festival Carnaval, which provides the backdrop to the tragic love story of Orpheus and Eurydice. The score is awash with percussive samba rhythms and the laughter and chanting of the annual festival melee. This is a great disc to play when the day needs a parade. --Lois Maffeo

5 out of 5 stars The best and original........2007-01-29

I like Manha De Carnaval so much that I listened to Domingo, Nana Mouskouri, Carly Simon and Luis Miguel's versions borrowed from the libraries. I like the original song in track 6 by Luiz Bonfa. Track 8 guitar playing is also beautiful. Track 11 female vocal is wonderful, spontaneous and second to none. The sound quality is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful.......2006-03-26

It's wonderful to have a new recording of the sound track from the movie Black Orpheus. The movie was one of my favorites but I played my old record of the sound track so many times (and put it through so many moves) it was scratched and no longer enjoyable to listen to. Now everytime I listen to my CD version I am transported to the time and space of the movie and the time and space of the early sixties when I first heard it. The little bonus addition at the end of the CD is fun too.

2 out of 5 stars Buy the movie, not this soundtrack.......2006-03-09

Save your money. I love the movie very much, and to watch it and to listen it is an experience like none other. However, if you look for the music from this movie, do not look here. This is just the movie, except without video. I have great respect for Bonfa and Jobim's work on this music, but they do not get glorified truly since the tracks change so quickly and the movie sounds play such a large role in the soundtrack cd. Listen to Trio da Paz and their Black Orpheus album and see how it compares, and even though it is not the original Jobim or Bonfa, it pays more homage to them than this original soundtrack. Verve took the wrong route with this one. Yes the music is landmark in evolving Samba/Bossa Nova, but this cd does not depict truly how wonderful the music is.

3 out of 5 stars Nace el bosanova.......2006-02-21

This dizzyingly diverse melting pot of sounds is a perfect primer on tropicalia--and then some. Tropicalia arose in the late 1960s as a genre informed by rock, bossa nova, soul, and underground rhythms, all mashed together to create an electrifying new movement in Brazilian music. The artists assembled here--Os Mutantes, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Tom Ze, Gal Costa—-are all an integral part of the tropicalia scene. Each, however, makes their own potent artistic statement. Enthusiastic vocals, inspired chants, inventive loops, and hushed arrangements collide throughout this expanse collection. You're never quite sure what you'll hear from track to track. Gal Costa's "Vou Recomecar" is a delight, playing like a foreign counterpart to Dusty Springfield's blue-eyed soul sparkle. The genius, however, is that every moment on Tropicalia sounds both classic and modern at the same time. Most everything here is as urgent and electric as anything you'll hear on contemporary radio. --Joey Guerra

5 out of 5 stars Tropicalia, again.......2006-07-19

It's nice to see more of this revolutionary era in Brazilian music released. However, anyone checking who was performing a main role in the movement, by looking at the Sargeant Pepper's-inspired cover of Tropicalia, the 1968 album, will notice that:

a) Tom Ze was there.

b) Jorge Ben or Jor Benjor was not.

c) Nara Leao was there on the cover and in the poetic "Lindoneia" with Caetano. Maybe the Caetano song in English was included as a marker of his exile after the Military Redeemer coup cracked down on anyone offending "values."

I believe Jorge Ben was always his own man. Gil, after Tropicalia, and Caetano, also after Tropicalia, discovered how great Jorge Ben was. Now, a US group also likes him.

Maybe Jards Macalé should be included. The problem with compilations from Brazil is that it's such a huge country, with so many different rhythms; it's hard to pick and choose. Man is lazy. It's easier to go with the "pop." Oops, pop, goes the weasel.

4 out of 5 stars pretty swell.......2006-06-27

if i were in charge of this project i'd change the following: more jorge ben, more gal costa, less mutantes, less tom ze (or better song choices), and maybe replace lost in paradise for a different caetano veloso song. notheless, this album is really excellent, and a great intro to tropicalia music.

5 out of 5 stars The 60s Happened in Brazil Too!.......2006-06-26

One of the best reveiewed ablums of 2006 (according to Metacritic.com), I was not disappointed.

I am a fan of 60s music and vintage 60s sounds, and this album is a treasure chest of pyschedelia that I had never been exposed to before.

I don't hand out too many 5 stars (or 1 star for that matter), but this one is worthy if you love that sound....

5 out of 5 stars More fuzz!!! psychedelic brazillian style!.......2006-05-24

Wow! this is a must have.
Some genius compiled this list of legends from Brasil and created a masterpiece! Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Os Mutantes, Gal Costa and Tom Ze and others!
Here are songs from the 60's-70's of Brasil that rocked the house and these songs still stand the test of time.
these songs have many different ranges in sounds but you wanna get up shake it up when you hear'em and maybe take a tab or two and just get down.
You have some great Bossa Nova overtones all over it but when you least expect it the Mutants will play something trippy, you'll never know who's gonna play what.
You get a good sample of all of the different stylings these artist are capable of.
this CD is a must! this CD is an incredible starter kit for anyone interested in the musical legends of Brasil.

On this new studio CD, Brazilian composer/singer/author Caetano Veloso reinterprets classic and contemporary American pop songs. Veloso's feathery, Miles Davis-like, Portuguese-inflected vocals negotiate the English language with silken skill with a 28-piece orchestra led by his long-time arranger, cellist Jaques Morelenbaum--featuring Carlinhos Brown on percussion and Veloso's gifted son Moreno on guitar--over Afro-bossa rhythms and spacey, echoplexed synth/guitar strains. Veloso sings the melody straight on the stunning string-accompanied "Feelings," and on a brave a capella reading of Cole Porter's "Love For Sale." But the fun begins when he reggae-fies Bob Dylan's "It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)," sings "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" with boppish sax lines and offers a twangy take on Kurt Cobain's "Come as You Are." From Stevie Wonder's "If It's Magic" to Elvis Presley's "Love Me Tender" and Arto Lindsey's edgy "Detached," Veloso shows that he's a master of sonic subversion. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

5 out of 5 stars More to the picture than meets the eye (ear, actually).......2007-01-05

I read with interest the polemic that developed among a couple of reviewers as a result of co-composer Jacques Morelenbaum's comments in the liner notes that "Aviation didn't begin in America; it began in Brazil".

Look it up. It's indisputable that Brazilian Alberto Santos Dumont flew a contraption heavier than air prior to the Wright Brothers. The point is debatable, and it hinges on the definition of the contraption. What's more important, though, is that Morelenbaum made the comment in the context of THIS record. It's an analogy, get it, folks?

As with first flight, whether modern American music or American standards, both of which Veloso interprets here, were invented in America or in Brazil first is debatable. One thing is certain: Veloso and his cohorts can fairly be credited for inventing the Tropicalia movement back in the 60s. What was Tropicalia? Plain and simple, it was a fusion of American or western music with black music.

Let's not forget Brazil's geographic and historical location. As a major stopping point in the slave trade, African culture and music took root there, and mixed with "western" music centuries ago. As the African diaspora spread northward to the south of the US, for example, African American musicians took it to the next step, and are widely credited for inventing rock 'n roll in the 50s.

It's telling that Veloso and Morelenbaum titled this album "A Foreign Sound", because on the one hand, it's "foreign" in that it consists of American music. On the other hand, it's not "foreign" at all to Veloso, for the reasons described above.

If you're already familiar with Veloso, you'll know that nothing he's done in his beautiful career is accidental. He's an incredible composer, and the songs he chose to interpret on this album were carefully selected, and he more often than not imbues the songs with a new interpretation that even the original songwriter sometimes prefers over his original version.

On the latter note, David Byrne often introduces his song "Nothing but Flowers" before playing it in a concert by saying "I'm going to play it the way Caetano Veloso plays it".

Can there be a bigger compliment from one composer to another? I don't think so. Could any non American have paid a bigger compliment to American music, while simultaneously commenting that "Americans didn't invent American music" than Caetano has on done on this album? I don't think so.

2 out of 5 stars below average.......2006-06-26

I like Caetano a lot, I've heaps of his previous CDs, but this one sucks...a lot...
He needs to put his feet back on the ground. THis Cd is sooo pretentious that it hurts...
You can easely skip this one.

5 out of 5 stars Americans DID NOT invent the airplane!.......2006-05-26

As a responde to Geoffrey's comment below...

The liner notes in the CD were referring to Brazilian inventor Alberto Santos-Dumont, who really built the first successful airplane in 1906. The Wright Brothers used a weight-driven catapult system to get off the ground.

Oh, and this CD is really good for those that enjoy Caetano.

3 out of 5 stars "technicality" comment/remark.......2006-05-16

In the liner notes (CD sleeve notes or whatever they're called), cellist Jacques Morelenbaum is quoted as saying: "... and Americans think that they invented the airplane." Thank you Mr. Morelenbaum, because they, in fact, did. Tone of voice of course being impossible to detect with such written quotes, I'm assuming he's perhaps referring to da Vinci, but he should undoubtedly know that da Vinci really only concocted the notion of strapping wings to one's arms and "taking flight" off a cliff (to certain demise?). Who does he think he is to make such a pompous remark. He is otherwise a fantastically talented cellist, and I relished seeing him perform alongside Caetano in my hometown of Columbus, OH (OH truly being the birthplace of aviation). All I'm saying is, give props where they're due. Sure, da Vinci thought of "flying," but I fly in my dreams too, as I'm sure everyone does (TUUP from TGU quote: "When you dream, do you fly?"). Anyways, that is merely a rant, and I'm certain that Jacques realizes that da Vinci or any other prior or latter thinkers/scientists/whatever did not achieve true flight before the Wright Brothers out of Dayton, Ohio, who of course flew their plane at Kitty Hawk in North Carolina (I've never been there). So paz out, homies.

p.s., kites, gliders, balloons, dirigibles/zeppelins, and blimps do not count, and of course Igor Sikorsky invented the helicopter, once again excepting da Vinci's crazy-azz gyrocopter drawings that never took flight.

I saw Sonya at Austins SXSW and it was an awsome performance. Right after the performance i went out and bought her cd. You need to pick this up. It is an awsome cd for young and old. Joni fans will love this cd. Go on check her out.

5 out of 5 stars What an awesome surprise!.......2005-08-23

I saw Sonya Kitchell in concert as an opening act for Susan Tedeschi and the audience was barely paying attention as we were seated. Within minutes, Sonya had capitivated the audience and people started paying attention and the idle chatter quickly hushed. You knew you were hearing something special. With a quiet but demure demeanor she drew the audience in until the final tune of her set had the audience singing along to "Fly Away". Each song on this album shows a little different aspect to her talent, and I love each song. I have had her CD on repeat for about two weeks now and people comment on her music no matter how low it is played. She can do jazz, she can do the blues, she can do anything she puts her mind to doing.

I get excited when I "find" a new musician, and though she has been around a bit, I feel like I found her. She is an exciting new singer/songwriter who can play her instrument and captivate with her voice and style.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Only recommended for a newbie.......2005-12-25

I have listened to this and the earlier Brazil 2 Mil comp, and many others of similar ambition. Also, I have listened to the artists within and many of their contemporaries from other, longer, albums. And while this album is alright, it's not great. For one, it's a bit uneven as it's a comp. That's alright, but what isn't is that they market it as this representative selection of "new" Brazilian music - it's not. It's downtempo lounge electronica ala Thievery Corporation or some euro thing, but with a Brazilian flair. If someone said Thievery Corporation was a sample of cutting edge electronic music I would have to laugh in their face - while it may be decent music and a pleasant listen in the right situation, it is nowhere near the "edge" of anything.

There is soooo much better Brazilian music out there, don't be limited by this comp, or turned off by it if you are looking for something more experimental. There are dozens of older groups that have branched out further than these new club-lite electronica flavors-of-the-month, such as Fernanda Porto or Marisa Monte, and some new experimental ones like Hapax or Chelpa Ferro. The list of really great, world-dominating Brazilian musical artists is huge, which is one reason this comp, while not awful in itself, just kinda pisses me off a little ;) If you want to check out Brazilian music, research it a bit and find the great ones, don't settle for euro-lounge sound-alike music.

4 out of 5 stars Brazilian Appetizer.......2004-09-26

Well, this CD is much better than most of the other contemporary Brazilian compelations out there. It hits the highlights, and does it well. Sure, it's a no-brainer to stick Suba or Bebel on a Brazil disc; but that's all right. It openes the ears for those not in the know, and that's the whole point of a compliation CD, right? Enjoy it for what it is, and use it to move on to some really great CDs.

4 out of 5 stars Brazil in "new" music.......2003-11-28

This CD it's the new "vouge" of Brazilian Music, but in a very conservative way.
The "melodia" it's always a remember of the "brazilian tradition".
The arists are of the top level like :Suba, Bossacucanova, Carlos Lyra, Bebel Gilberto, Zuco 103, Roberto Menescal, Cibelle, Celso Fonseca, Erlon Chaves, Trio Mocotò.
The final result it's a louge brazilian music with happines and "tristessa".
The beautiful voices are the strong point but also where there is an instrumental song like : Cosa Nostra (Raw Deal Remix), the result it's very nice.
Note that there is a "Tanto Tempo" in version Remix of Peter Kruder.
Less that one hour (57 minuts) of good "now" brazilian music.
A must if you like this "great" country.

4 out of 5 stars Strong compilation, especially for newbies to world music.......2003-04-27

If you're looking for a possible introduction into some world music, you could do a LOT owrse than this almost great collection of Brazillian tracks. The stuff is modern and jazzy, with plenty of its roots intact. It's a trip through modern Latin grooves and you'll like more of it than you won't, even if you aren't into world music. Listening to Nicola Conte remix Suba is almost worth the price of the CD, and the Kruder remix of Gilberto's "Tanto Tempo" makes it a must-have for lounge/world heads, not counting the other few legitimate gems within.

Mostly for existing fans of world-flavored music, but not a bad introduction (though there are more accessible records out there).

5 out of 5 stars With Six Degrees, there is NO separation!!.......2003-03-13

If you scan the Billboard Top 200 album charts nowadays, you'll find enough quality releases to fit on one hand (in a good week). In this dismal state of popular music, Six Degrees Records has arrived to show us the way. Thanks to Amazon[.com] reviewers, I was led to Bebel Gilberto, Suba, and others in the Six Degrees family. Sadly, this amazing hybrid of Latin music and electronic sounds is nowhere to be found on said charts (maybe the world music section). That said, this collection is a great place to start for those looking to make the plunge to great sounds. For those already familiar with these artists, you get new remixes (the Suba one is especially excellent) plus songs from Cibelle and Celso Fonseca that hadn't been previously released. At this great price, click right here if you're sick of the state of popular music and want a way out of the madness!!

One of the best chroniclers of modern Brazilian music, the hip Ziriguiboom label has discovered such diverse and talented artists as Bebel Gilberto, Zuco 103 and Apollo Nove, providing a stamp of quality on every album it issues. Here it partners once again with the like-minded American label Six Degrees, who issues The Now Sounds Of Brazil 2 domestically as part of its Travel Series. Featuring seven of the label's artists doing two songs apiece, this collection presents new versions of Brazil's laid-back and sexy bossa nova while updating it either by adding modern electro sounds to the tradition (DJ Dolores, Bossacucanova) or creating great new bossa nova songs (Celso Fonseca, Cibelle) that hold up well next to the acoustic classics. Ten of the 14 songs are previously released, but this is nonetheless a great introduction to today's Brazilian music at its best. And folks in the know will certainly dig the exclusive new tracks. --Tad Hendrickson

4 out of 5 stars The Exclusives Make This Purchase Worthwhile!!.......2006-08-07

I first came to the genius that is Six Degrees Records when I heard "The Now Sound of Brazil" in late 2002. That recording opened my ears to a whole new world of great modern music, which I have been satisfying ever since. Now comes the sequel to the original five star effort, and it's certainly a worthy follow up. You have excellent remixes from Bebel Gilberto (which is superior to the original song) and Zuco 103, but the song that pushes this over the top is the one that closes the disc, the Apollo 9 remix of "Trancelim de marfim." Since the original track also appears in the disc (and is also excellent), it's nice to be able to compare the two tracks. The remix opens with the sound of plates and silverware clinking, then leads into an amazing string arrangement. Both songs are excellent in their own right, but the right has me pushing the repeat button, and fully justifies this purchase!

4 out of 5 stars Solid Compilation of what Ziriguiboom's been up to.......2006-03-31

Ziriguiboom's a label out of Europe that specializes in new Brazilian music. They're a pretty stark contrast to the likes of a Far Out records, which has served as a wonderful springboard of terrific established artists. Ziriguiboom/Crammed have focused their attention on some of the younger and in some cases, more experimental acts. Some of the artists on their label include (and included) Suba, Zuco 103, Bebel Gilberto, Trio Mocoto, DJ Dolores and the list goes on. This is volume two of their "Now Sound of Brazil" series. But don't be fooled - Ziriguiboom had a sampler out in 1999 too titled "Brasil 2Mil", which to me was their best and most effective and in some ways, would render this one volume 3 instead.

Still, volume 2 is pretty good. The sampler does a terrific job of giving you an idea of what to expect from the new artists on the label and what some of the other artists have been up to. It opens up with a cut straight from Bebel Gilberto's remix album before diving into a spirited track on Bossacucanova's latest (released in 2004). It's still a good track to me, collaborating with Zuco 103, which shows how much the group's matured. You then have Apollo Nove's "Inexplicata" before Cibelle's "esplendor". I dug cibelle's track - nice acoustic sound. Other good tracks on here were both of Celso Fonseca's tunes - one given a rare remix by Da Lata, Apollo Nove's "86" stuck out, and I liked DJ Dolore's "Trancelim de Marfim" too. Funny but Cibelle's gone in a different direction in some ways; maybe I have to give it more time but "Meu Amor" was pretty darn abstract to even me... I don't know if I'd label this album chillout though since some of the songs are a bit more intense and again, abstract. But you do have some relaxing melodies with Celso Fonseca and Cibelle's first cut on this.

I liked this compilation. it gives you an idea of what some of the artists are up to. But it wasn't without fault - that is to say, I wasn't a fan of all of the tunes here or that were used. In fact, many of the songs weren't the best out of the projects the artists have recently undergone IMO, which doesn't do them any real favors when it comes to building expectations. Still, it's a good sign that Ziriguiboom is still in the business of breaking down boundaries and putting out some interesting music and exciting musicians. If you like this, be on the lookout for some of these artists feature releases. A shame... I hear Bebel Gilberto's coming out with a new album for late 2006/2007, but no teasers are on this one.

This is the USA release, distributed by Six Degrees Recrods. So it will be cheaper than the imported version (you can thank Six Degrees!)

4 out of 5 stars Very nice surprise.......2006-03-10

If you are a fan of chillout you will find this a nice surprise. It has some of the classic Brazil chillout sounds. Some are downtempo and some a little up with a couple having an nice atmospheric sound to them. I would definitely recommend this to someone if they want chillout or just want to hear something different to cook/dance/massage/yoga/listen to.

4 out of 5 stars The Music of Nature: listen.......2006-10-08

These and similar atmospheric recordings seem to have several types of buyer: those who want a sedative or sleep-inducer to calm their agitation or put them to sleep; those who want the hear an anthology of sounds they expected from watching nature shows or reading illustrated nature books; those who have a meditative ear of the music of nature and human ambience, like that of John Cage; and those who want an exotic background for routine daily activities to put themselves in another place, as if living in a hut in the field. I seek no application other than an appreciation of new sounds. I just listen to the virtual volume of space. If you are of like mind, this recording should be a worthy addition to your collection, like those of the splendid Ryko Cape Cod series.

5 out of 5 stars a bath in crazy wildlife.......2003-09-29

with all respect dear fellow review-writers... To me - this is one of the most delightful experiences to dwell in. Lie down, shut the mind and swim in sounds of animals never encountered, sometimes a bird comes close to the microphone while the background carpet of jungle-sound embraces. If you have been to the rainforest or not - it is a strange world which is great to recuperate in and an awe to fall into for the massive of species on the planet and the magic their sounds can produce.

5 out of 5 stars It's froglicious!.......2001-07-18

This is, without a doubt, the best frog album I own. If you like frogs, or mosquitos, or large bulbous things that chirp very loudly, you owe it to yourself to purchase this CD. In retrospect I have no idea why I bought this, and I certainly don't have any idea why this CD exists in the first place, but frog fans will be in frog heaven with this froglicious frog album.

2 out of 5 stars Yee-ouchh! A painfull cacophany of jungle sounds........2000-10-04

I bought this CD because of the impressive-sounding credentials of Ruth Happel, the lady who recorded all the sounds found on the disc. I was searching for a relaxing ambient recording, and I hoped that this would be a genuine, high-quality representation of actual rainforest animals, bugs and birds going about their daily routines of hooting, grunting, buzzing, and singing, accompanied by the gentle pattering of rain on leafy canopies.

Never having been within nine or ten thousand kilometres of an actual rainforest (!) I can't say for sure whether this CD actually does accurately capture the sounds of rainforest life. I can say however that this disc is painfully loud; I'd liken it to Nature's version of a heavy construction site, complete with a regiment of pneumatic drills, the revving of bulldozer engines and the hammer and clang of men, metal and concrete. Ouch!

I've played this disc twice in the six months since I bought it, and each time I've had to struggle to listen to the end, the sounds simply proving too disagreeable to make it worthwile. It isn't what I was looking for. If you're hoping to relax while this CD plays softly in the background you may be disappointed. I would recommend instead a CD called "Rainforest" by Echoes of Nature". In my warped and twisted opinion that particular CD is much more subtle and calming.

1 out of 5 stars Crickets and rain.......2000-07-25

20 minutes of crickets followed by 20 minutes of rain followed by (oh goody) another 20 minutes of crickets. If you listen real hard you can hear a bird or two. Too bad I didn't see the last review before I ordered it!

The smash success of Bebel Gilberto's turn-of-the-century hit Tanto Tempo would lead many to believe that she was an overnight success. But this recording, released in Japan in 1991 and available now for the first time in the U.S., highlights her smooth, Sade-like sound. Joined by the legendary Brazilian bassist Luisão Maia, this project puts Gilberto's cool contralto in more traditional bossa-nova-style settings with synthesized string arrangements. The result is a snappy, Creed Taylor-sounding CD. The best selections are the title track, the "One Note Samba" syncopated composition "Amor Unilateral," and "Quando o Ceu Nao Estava Azul," which includes a silky Stan Getz-style tenor sax solo. Think of this recording as Bebel Gilberto's syncopated first draft. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Mix.......2007-08-02

I really enjoy listening to this mix of smooth Bosa Nova music. Each track has its own connection to Brazil with Bebel Gilberto as a super boost. If your new to Bossa Nova start with Tom Jobim but if your looking for j-pop sound start here. As my friends in Rio would say this CD is "legal".

1 out of 5 stars Highly disappointing............2003-01-21

I have got to be one of the biggest Bossa Nova lovers that I know of. I live, sleep and dream about Bossa Nova. Heck, I even have named my Xbox live user name "Bossa Nova". However, this CD struck me as a huge disappointment. First of all, when I bought this I didn't realize that this was J-Pop mixed with Bossa Nova sounds. I thought it was straight Brazilian music. I like some J-Pop, which really stands for Japanese Pop. I LOVE Pizicatto Five! However the mix, doesn't mix well at all. It sounds extremely weird and I doubt I'll ever listen to this again. I'd rather listen to Bebel Gilberto on her excellent "Tanto Tempo" than listen to her singing this experimental junk!

5 out of 5 stars Interesting Japanese bossa album featuring Bebel..........2002-12-07

Good bossa album from '91 which, according to the cd's liner notes, was "originally planned as an instrumental album of Brazilian musicians playing songs from famous Japanese pop singer/songwriter Yumi Matsutoya". Well, Bebel Gilberto was added to the mix and the result is well, Bebel.
If you like your bossa nice and breezy, this should suit you fine.
My only major complaint is that Bebel's vocals are buried far too low in the mix throughout the album.
The production is a little heavier and not as stripped down or personal as Bebel's own albums, but nice nonetheless.

Anime fans take note: The song "Envolvida Em Ternura" (Embraced By Tenderness) is the same tune heard during the closing credits of Miyazaki's Kiki's Delivery Service.

5 out of 5 stars It takes a little getting used to... but then it's SUPER!.......2006-03-08

This is a great addition to any collection of Brazil inspired cool music.

Although some initial tracks on the "SOL Side" take a little getting used to, since they are the real untouched local Brazilian tunes from the 70's, once you pass song No. 7 on that CD, tunes are quite international and should be familiar to most listeners. The second CD - Luna Side - is more upbeat without ever crossing the line into heavy "techno-land". Luna Side is international throughout.

Both CDs in this collection are very soothing and sophisticated, and there are as many as 29 tracks on these two CDs, a real value purchase. So, you can simply let them spin on your player, while you lounge with your friends and sip on your favorite Brazilian "Caipirinha" cocktail.

P.S. as my only protest regarding this compilation series, I'd ask The Ministry of Sound - Berlin to proofread the words in Portuguese and to stay true to our language, which is not Spanish!

4 out of 5 stars Good, but far from Great.......2006-01-31

I'll skip some of the history of the series and give the abbreviated version. Brazilution is like a sister series to Audiopharm's "Brazilectro" franchise. It was started by the founders of Brazilution but is released on the Ministry of Sound Germany label. It spans three volumes now with the first being released back in 2003 and this one released in 2005. The number 5.3 is probably given to the series because it was released at the same time as "Brazilectro vol 5" and it was quite confusing - so 5.3 is after Brazilectro, but volume 3. I think. I love the Brazilution series - the mood of all of them is more on the chilled out vibe. However in 2004 they switched to a format where regular sun-drenched/relaxed beach-going songs were on disc one while disc two had some Brazilian inspired club cuts.

Volume 3 was compiled by Ian Pooley and is no different in that aspect but in terms of the music, it's VERY different from its predecessors. Disc one is loaded with MPB and kicks off with the dreamy Gal Costa track "Vatapa" and rolls in a similar vibe into Nara Leao's adorable "Alem Do Horizonte". Other highlights on disc one were Jorge Ben's "Take It Easy My Brother Charles", Janice feat. Concorde à L'Orange's "Sparkling Desire" (wonderful stuff) and Rosanna & Zélia's "Sobre a Solidao". Disc 2 is clubbed up and starts out magically with masters of fusion Azymuth providing a romantic guitar laced cut called "Tropical Rain". That's followed up with Sven Van Hees's "Summer Serenade", a nice deep house track. Other top songs on this were Los Ladrones "Go Bianco!", a great song with a neat build-up and roll to it - festive cut. A Bossa Eletrica's "Veija o Sol" is also provided, remixed by the Spiritual South with a nice club beat to it and then there's the highlight: Nathan Haines feat. Guida De Palma of Jazzinho. The song is "O Misterio" and it's a sweet 12" cut with a broken beat and very dreamy vibe to it. I also did like Yasushi Ide's cut that followed it.. remixed by M.A.W. it's given a real housed up face-lift - I'd forgotten about the cut and it's on the old Bossa Mundo album from about 5-6 years ago.

But this did have it's share of problems. Particularly, this one wasn't very consistent and disc two had some poor cross-fade work in it while a few tracks were beyond head-scratchers, like an older track by Slow Supreme titled "Granada". Good song but better left on a few other compilations - it just didn't fit into this release at all. Meanwhile there were problems with "O Misterio"'s before and after the cut and speaking of "Granada" that one was a bit awry too. Disc one wasn't particularly consistent in sound or in originality to be honest but it was easily the stronger of the two discs. Disc two really is far from having anything at all to do with "Brasil" with the exception of a select few songs being sung in Portuguese. It missed the mark.

In general strength, this one just doesn't measure up to volume 5.2 or the consistency of volume 5 (5.1) but I'd still recommend it - the four stars is a bit generous - I'd say about 3.5 is justice for it and I have to give credit for the quality original/un-released tracks. This is a solid release which I did enjoy and it was never released in the USA. I'm not sure yet if there will be a volume 4 in this series; buzz doesn't start until end of March or April. However if you do like this, you may also like the Brazil 5000 series (it's at 4 volumes now), the Bossa House N' Break's out of Japan is also a terrific series, although difficult to find. And you may also like "Bossa Tres... Jazz: Step Into the Gallery" and a compilation called "A Night in Rio".

5 out of 5 stars The sweetest voice singing the best Brazilian music.......2003-07-24

I've been in love with Joanie Sommers since I was a teenager and she was the Pepsi Girl. The pairing of her sweet voice and phrasing with the lush Bossa Nova-style rhythm and melody is absolutely perfect. I miss hearing her and wish someone in the music business would find a way to reprint her out-of-print albums.

5 out of 5 stars A forgotten voice.......2001-03-18

I don't understand why is so difficult to find Joanie Sommer's CD's. She was the best cool voice of the sixties. Where's she now? Why must we buy her albuns only in Japan? She had a fantastic sweet voice. Listen to her performance in some brazilian bossa nova standards like "Carnival" ("Manha de Carnaval", with different lyrics of the famous Sinatra recording named "A day in the life of a fool") or "Meditation", an Antonio Carlos Jobim's masterpiece. The album is superb. All tracks are in bossa nova rhythm, with the participation of late brazilian guitar player Laurindo Almeida. Just one more question: why the strings background? If you like Stacey Kent, the best jazz singer today, listen to Joanie. She was Stacey Kent yesterday. We want to hear in CD others Joanie's LPs like "Sommers Seasons" or "Dream"!
