5 out of 5 stars Best Bonnie Raitt album EVER.......2007-07-03

Before Bonnie got her Grammies and got overproduced, her band had a lot of heart and soul - and it drips out of "Sweet Forgiveness." I've been a fan of hers since the '70s, and this is by far her best album. Pity it's so hard to find these days.

5 out of 5 stars If you're a Bonnie Raitt fan, you'll enjoy this DVD.......2006-11-17

More of the usual quality of Bonnie Raitt.

4 out of 5 stars Raitt's voice at her best on this uneven album.......2006-07-22

This underrated album showcases Bonnie Raitt's excellent voice before she trashed it with too much hard living. It also illustrates her ability to perform truly satisfying blues/rock with a gifted band of musicians. Listeners who became Raitt fans with the release of "Nick of Time" and later albums, as well as listeners who thought "Nick" and later albums aren't all that great, will be impressed with this disc, which is a much better example of her bluesy rock sensibility than the overproduced albums of the '90s. The song selection is uneven, but it's worth the price for the title song alone, which showcases Raitt's confident, low-key approach during this period of her career.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Bonnie Raitt.......2006-05-19

I've had this as an album, a cassette and now the remastered CD. I absolutely adore this collection. It's Bonnie Raitt at her best and that is fine indeed.

5 out of 5 stars "Two Lives" the standout.......2006-03-11

This is a wonderful CD. Bonnie can't go wrong from the first track to the last, but what made it a superb CD, for me is #3 "Two Lives" The arrangement of the choral background and the heart breaking lyrics is beautiful. You find yourself singing along with the chorus, "Someone said time will ease the pain of losing your love." "But, I believe whorever wrote that song, never had a broken heart." Just a gorgeous song. I also like Bonnie's interpretation of Del Shannon's "Runaway." She gave it a piquant country flavor, very refreshing. This is a great CD,

Here's another to join the parade of page-to-stage musicals inspired by 19th-century fiction. This ambitious adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's haunting classic Jane Eyre for the musical theater seems to be part of a trend represented most famously by Les Misérables. It also reflects the increasing pressure to schedule an original cast recording release as close as possible to a new show's Broadway opening: in this case, in fact, the CD was both recorded and released prior to the show's opening in December 2000 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. But what's most significant for the artistic character of Jane Eyre: The Musical is found in yet another pattern: like a number of his colleagues, composer-lyricist Paul Gordon comes to the project from a pop music industry background (best known for his hit "Friends and Lovers"). And quite a few of the show's numbers benefit from Gordon's catchy craftwork, weaving melodies that are clearly destined to be whistled long past curtain. Yet the effect is sometimes too facile, not diving as deep as we would like into the emotional predicaments of Brontë's characters. You begin to crave a more deftly defined and imagined variety of sound worlds (especially for the darker aspects of Thornfield Hall) than what is hinted at. Gordon doesn't forge any new paths, but his melodic fluency does have its moments of payoff--especially in the moving final duet "Brave Enough for Love," which is also strong enough to stand on its own.

Gordon's predilections as a would-be son of Sondheim are nevertheless clear, and he's telescoped the story into mostly effective lyrics, with some thoughtful juxtapositions of material. Most importantly, he understands that this is more than a Gothic romance, foregrounding the central message of forgiveness that Jane learns as a girl. He attempts to explore the injured sense of self shared by both Jane and Rochester and sets them on a painful, mutual voyage of discovery.

The creative team also includes the veteran duo John Caird (book and direction) and John Napier (scenic design), who have collaborated on such epics as Les Mis and Nicholas Nickleby (not to mention the Las Vegas Siegfried and Roy extravaganza). And the show's creators seem to share a vision geared toward the more operatic end of the spectrum (it was opera composers, after all, who early on claimed 19th-century Gothic fiction for the stage, as in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor), with an actual parody of coloratura in one showstopper ("The Finer Things") given to Blanche Ingram. Fortunately, the two principals have large, richly expressive voices to encompass the large, complicated emotions of these characters. Marla Schaffel singswith unusual beauty and brings dimension to her Jane, while James Barbour (whose resumé includes Beauty and the Beast) is never really threatening as Rochester, but rather a tortured soul who is sweet-voiced even at his most cynical. Mary Stout is a stitch as the blustery Mrs. Fairfax. While the show has already undergone a lengthy evolution from its very first workshops, the viability of its final, fully staged realization has yet to be determined. But this cast recording conveys an authentic sense of the musical's atmosphere and emotional scope. --Thomas May

5 out of 5 stars Great Buy!.......2007-06-08

Not only was this CD super cheap, it also arrived at my house 3 days later!

4 out of 5 stars Perfect Match.......2007-03-16

The music in this album really gave me the feeling of reading the book. I think the songs were well chosen and well written, except of course for the songs sung by Mrs. Fairfax... I could have done without those. Jane and Mr. Rochester's songs carry the story well and they sound lovely. For any musical lover, or romance fan I definitely recommend this album.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the most beautiful musical of all time.......2007-02-16

This is a hidden gem and if you buy it and listen to it, I don't see how you can not love it. I have bought many, many Broadway cast albums but I still am a popster at heart. With all that said, this is a cast album that soars above the crowd.

I bought this several years ago and have listened to it repeatedly since I got it. Why do I love it so much? First of all, the lyrics are full of heart and emotion and tell the story ably. But it is the music and the performances that are truly remarkable here. The melodies are memorable and absolutely exquisite. The orchestration is lush but not sappy. The performances by the two leads are nothing less than stunning.

I never get bored with this wonderful cast album and it is very, very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2007-01-28

I listen to this soundtrack all the time and I never get tired of the songs. If Charlotte Bronte story was written as a musical, then this would definitely be it.

4 out of 5 stars A good musical.......2006-07-20

if you like old-fashioned romantic stuff, this one's for you. Some songs are very inspired, the music is,for the most part, quite beautiful, and the story line keeps the essence of the Bronte novel. I heard this right after "Wuthering Heights: the musical", which is quite good, yet this is superior. Give it a try and you might be nicely surprised. I would highly recommend it to the ones who know the novel and to English Literature students: it offers a different and interesting approach to the novel.

With her full-throated alto and her world-weary tone, newcomer Syleena Johnson conjures up the sort of dyed-in-the-wool, down-home soul that used to be par for the course. She comes by that soul genetically: Her dad is R&B legend Syl Johnson but his baby girl is no retro act. Her been-done-wrong anthems, told as a chapter from a young woman's life, have the sassy attitude of today but are seasoned by a womanliness that is often AWOL from the more hip kid-driven R&B. Working with labelmates R. Kelly and Liberty City, Syleena has made a soulful CD that feels real and sounds lived through. --Amy Linden

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Voice.......2006-01-06

That wonderful Alto voice that sometimes reminds me of Angela Bofill and a soulful rasp that reminds me of Billie Holiday. The album is solid but I really wish that she would get better material because the voice deserves better.
The important thing is that she can sang. One of those Church singers but with lots of control.
If you miss real singers, then you gonna like this.

I Am Your Woman (first video i remember when i first saw her on Midnight Love..i though she could sang...influenced me to buy the album)

Hit On Me (Second video i've seen. This is when i went to buy the album. The message and words are powerful and she sings it with such force. One of the best songs on this CD)

Everybody Wants Something, He's Gonna Do You In, and You Said other good songs...average album but her voice makes up for it...

5 out of 5 stars Very well-rounded artist!.......2004-01-01

Sylenna has a very powerful voice for her age. She is way ahead of her time. I truly appreciate Syleena's diversity and I pray that she gets more airplay because she is definatley underrated.

5 out of 5 stars Soulfully Put.......2003-11-11

Syleena Johnson's album is a mix of neo soul, R&B,rock, and comtemporary gospel all in one album. Syleena's raspy voice and high and low range will leave you spellbound. This is the album that every music loving, free soul should have.

Chp.1 Love,Pain and Forgiveness gives you what you are looking for in a great album. With tear jerking tracks such as "Hit on Me", and "One Day", you'll be holding back all of your emotions. Then there are tracks like "I Am Your Woman", and "You Got Me Spinnin'", that should empower every woman out there.

With songs produced by R.Kelly and lots of other notable artists, this album is the best comtemporary R&B album I'ved heard in a long time.

5 out of 5 stars Queen of old school R&B.......2003-10-11

Syleena is one of those singers that's hard to ignore once you hear her amazingly soulfull voice. This artist is definitely going to be around for a long time. Good luck to you Syleena you have a new fan.

5 out of 5 stars Forgiveness by Rhonda Gunn.......2005-09-20

Woke up to the sound of this woman singing Forgiveness on Daystar tv network, had to get up, move closer to the TV to see the title and artist, wrote both down, and had to go out and buy it. Got the CD and was not disappointed in any of the songs. Very inspiring and uplifting, and oh, how sweet is the voice and arrangements, musicians, all melding together perfectly.

5 out of 5 stars Lyrics, Sound, Lyrics.......2003-04-11

Rhonda's songs have a unique way of bringing one back to the true center of Christianity. You cannot hold onto her message and still hold onto the flesh. In "Forgiveness", you are constantly reminded that there is a bigger picture and that the Lord is infinite in His ability to handle all that life might throw at you. I especially recommend this album to Christian women who may be considering stepping outside of their faith to find answers. Rhonda reminds us that we already HAVE all the answers because we have Christ. Challenging, but refreshing; she empathizes with us but graciously takes away any excuse to stray from the truth. BUY IT! Then, put it in your car and listen to it everywhere you go. It will change you.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD.......2003-02-18

I was not acquainted with Rhonda Gunn until I heard "Autumn Rain" on the Worship television program late one night. The song wouldn't leave me so I went out to buy it. Though it was not at all easy to find, it was well worth the effort. I was pleasantly surprised by some other splendid tracks on the CD. The orchestration was a perfect compliment to her outstanding voice. This is one of the best CDs I've purchased in quite some time.

5 out of 5 stars This Could Be The Best CD I've Heard Yet.......1999-07-12

The first time I heard the song Valley Of The Shadow on our local radio station I knew I had to hear more. My friend Rhonda Gunn honestly gave gospel music it's best CD to be found anywhere. I'm not sure anyone has equalled the amount of hits from one single album. Whether you like Inspirational or Contemporary Christian, Rhonda bridges the gap with music that will make you feel the lyrics as only she can sing them. This gal not only talks the talk but she walks the walk. You can't go wrong with FORGIVENESS.

Boomerang is one of my favorite songs off this album and I really love this movie as well. I rate DVD and album 5 stars!!!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2001-08-13

This soundtrack has always been very special to me. It was given to me as a gift years ago when the movie was released. Whenever, I need to escape the world and find a special place, I play this music. So smooth and gentle, it feels as if you are actually floating on the sound.

5 out of 5 stars The music of pure rapture.......2000-04-26

One of the most stirring soundtracks of any film I can recall, much of this music can take the listener to a place so calm and thoughtful it seems as if time has ceased to exist. There's little conventional "melody", but instead sweeping washes of sound and chords which convey ambiguous, tender and searching emotional states. Sometimes pensive, sometimes mystical, sometimes passionate, it is truthful, complex music, whether intimate or grand. I like to play it while driving in the mountains. It has become indispensible to me!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Stirring and a Wonderful Infant Relaxer.......1999-07-16

When I heard this soundtrack during the movie, I was swept away with it's beauty, expansiveness and, oddly, its intimacy. It soothed me like no other instrumental body of work I had heard at the time--or since. When we had our first son in 1990, I would bathe him at night, bring him into the living room, put this on and put him on my chest. Within 5 minutes, he'd be asleep. It worked equally well for our second son. Beyond infancy, it was a calming resource on more than our fair share of family car trips. You and your family can't miss with this one.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Drama Score.......1999-01-09

Michael Convertino definitely nailed it on the head with the score for the 1986 film adaptation of CHILDREN OF A LESSER GOD. The score is gentle and uplifting, yet examines the underpinnings of humanity. "Rain Pool" and "Underwater Love" are cues that truly stand out in an album that conspires to bring the listener to the brink of tears. A good listen, if you're in the right frame of mind, and a worthy addition to any score collection.

(...) but i'll tell you Jim witters CD is one of my favorites! His song "Forgiveness" is my favorite song ever!!!

5 out of 5 stars WITTER THOU GOEST.......2003-04-02

Former country singer Jim Witter turns to the contemporary Christian arena, and delivers a solid, moving, and well constructed album in "Forgiveness." Witter has a passionate tenor, and sings with conviction and emotion. Steve Wariner adds his touch to several of the songs, both as a co-writer, and co-performer. Christian sensation Nicole Nordemann joins Jim on the lovely "Faith, Hope, Love," a touching look at what those three virtues mean in this hectic world of ours. The title track is a real heart-tugger, relating the story of a little boy whose best friend betrays him with a lie and how over the years, the singer can't find the words to forgive him..pretty moving.
Witter offers a gospel-driven version of the classic "On the Wings of a Dove," bringing a vibrant tenacity to this well-worn chestnut. Likewise, he gives the Byrds' "Turn, Turn, Turn" two interpretations, one as the featured performer, and another in a duet with his daughter, Roslyn. Roslyn's voice is obviously that of a child, but it has a nice tonality and some ethereal qualities. I'm sure she'll blossom into a very good singer. Both versions of this classic are effective; it's good to hear this song again. "You Are the Son," is a beautiful tribute to Jesus, and is delivered powerfully and passionately.
Witter should have a future in the Christian field; if his writing (and those of others who contributed) maintains its honesty and hope, Witter's star should shine right up there with Michael and Steven.
A nice collection.
RECOMMENDED.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome but reject the shamanism.......2003-10-16

I love Peter Kater and most of his music without occult or shaman titles in them, because the truth is, it is part of a cult thinking and spiritual darkness. I studied it for years as I did other cults and I know people firsthand who were involved with the illuminated cult and "ism. Otherwise he has an excellent talent and beautiful spirit in music and melodic creation on the piano and you cannot deny that he has a God-given gift, if and when he ever acknowledges that is truly where it comes from.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for people of any religious tradition.......2007-04-30

I am a meditation teacher and personal growth coach. I am educated in psychology and also world religions. As such, I think I am in a good position to judge the merits of this CD.

As a spiritual and psychologically oriented individual, I think the value of cultivating loving-kindness, compassion and forgiveness is grossly underestimated in our society. In fact, many of the health benefits of these types of practices are now coming to light. For example, the organization that puts out The HeartMath Solution: The Institute of HeartMath's Revolutionary Program for Engaging the Power of the Heart's Intelligence and Freeze-Framer ® v2.0 Interactive Learning System with Patented Heart Rhythm Monitor are getting good traction in the medical community.

Loving-Kindness meditaiton has been around long before these times, however. This practice originated with the Buddha and is expanded upon in detail in the Anapanasatti sutras dating back more than 2,000 years. This CD is westernized version of this practice that is effective and true to the spirit of the tradition that is was taken from. In other words, it has 2,000+ years of experiential validation as a method to develop loving-kindess. The forgiveness meditaiton is a bonus and the benfits of learning to forgive are well-researched, e.g. see Forgive for Good.

The timing of different segments, background information and length of these meditations is very well-suited to people without prior experience in meditation. The presentation is also detailed enough to be useful when one is accomplished at this practice as well.

In general, Carolyn McManus puts out good, high quality materials. I particularly like Relax into Restful Sleep. If you like this CD, you may want to try one of her other ones.

5 out of 5 stars Loving Kindness Helps Open Your Heart.......2006-12-04

In this 2006 CD, Carolyn McManus uses her experience and enchanting voice to create guided meditations on Loving Kindness and on Forgiveness.

These meditations have brought me heartfelt joy. When I am following Carolyn through her Loving Kindness phrases, I discover my heart creaking open to love in ways that I had not known existed. And listening to both meditations has moved me to try to bridge several long-standing estrangements.

I particularly enjoy Carolyn's version of Loving Kindness because she begins with phrases toward a loved one, moves next to the same phrases for ones own self, and then through several steps to all living beings. The beginning generates a strong feeling of loving energy which repetitive phrases carry through the following steps of the meditation. The ending connects us to everyone.

Listening to Carolyn's Mindful Body Scan on her "Mindfulness" CD has helped me to become better able to follow guided meditations such as on this "Loving Kindness" CD. I highly recommend both.

5 out of 5 stars Carolyn McManus's Loving Kindness CD.......2006-10-02

As a physical therapist who works with many pain patients, I have found that McManus's CD provides a very helpful way for my patients to continue their healing work after they have left my office. Carolyn's soothing voice, her comforting and calming words give welcome guidance to those who are dealing with emotional issues that serve as barriors to the healing process. This CD can help anyone trying to relate to and interact with others in this very stressful world. Anne Ingard PT

5 out of 5 stars Loving Kindness Meditation and Forgiveness Meditation.......2006-09-24

As a newcomer to meditation, I felt that it was somehow selfish since it seemed to be for my well being and only my well being. Carolyn McManus' Loving Kindness Meditation and Forgiveness Meditation not only offered me a way of including my loved ones in my meditation, it also guided me to find peace in forgiveness. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Genius in Simplicity.......2006-09-22

In this age of latest-greatest-trade marked branding frenzy, this CD stands out in its simplicity and poignancy. No fancy incantations, no deep intricate theories or complex formulations. McManus takes the listener straight into the practice without fluff or flourish...straight into their heart. In the cleanly recorded instruction with no heavenly/new-age chorus for accompaniment, McManus invites the listener into the only space where change can occur.

From this heart space with crisp and gentle pacing, the listener "moves" through the ancient loving kindness practice with a clear, unfettered directness. Each movement gently and mindfully invites the heart's participation, but also allows permission for what ever distance may be necessary in the moment. No pressing forward or assumed need to demand the gentle heart space move beyond its safety at the moment.

This CD makes a marvelous clinical tool for therapists of many flavors to recommend to their clients who might benefit from the healing effects of spending time in their heart spaces. Especially relevant in our harried society is the Forgiveness meditation...it brings a powerful tool in a gentle manner into the homes of patients that might benefit from the healing powers of forgiveness in their lives. Books, clinical talk and theories fail to go as deeply as this well thought out and supportive practice can over time and repetition.

McManus demonstrates an awareness of the worlds she traverses...depth of mindfulness practice, realities of clinical needs for "everyday" patients and clients, and most importantly, the gift of awareness in the sacred heart space she obviously has spent time in herself, both with herself and as an honored guest of fortunate patients.

    Album Description

Music was originally a communal act. It was utilitarian and, in a way, magic - it made work easy. Music was also a reflection of the nascent social order, with one lead voice and the rest responding. The first solo music was therefore a powerful act of liberation, of spirit. This recording contains a great diversity of solos; more than a millennium separates the oldest from the most recent; there are solos for flutes, reeds, brass, lutes, zithers, fiddles, piano, percussion, and voice; the music comes from the Near East, the Far East, Australia, Europe, and the Americas. But despite the contrast of instruments and styles, what gradually becomes apparent is the similarity beneath the surface of these works. Soul Alone: The Art of the Solo suggests that there is some fundamental distinction about the way musicians express themselves in a solo setting - something that defines the Art of the Solo.

This is some of the most personally felt music the world's greatest traditions have to offer. If the act of making music is a personal one, so too is listening. Music was always meant to be listened to - by other people, or by something else, whether you call it God or nature or by another name. And that is the reason for Soul Alone: The Art of the Solo. Because after all, music can be performed alone, and heard alone, but it is still a communal art, meant to be shared. Perhaps it only truly becomes music when it is shared.

Black Box may be one of the preeminent record labels for modern composers, but that doesn't mean its music can't be soothing. On The Calm, we get a 17-track sampling of some lesser-heard 20th-century pieces that are all (you guessed it) calming. Paul Honey's atmospheric track from Two Days, Nine Lives sets the opening tone for this disc, while tracks featuring the music of Erik Satie and Olivier Messiaen are a little less predictable but still soothingly meditative. Arvo Pärt's "Spiegel im Spiegel" gives a listener a hint of his "holy minimalism" style of composing; it's a gorgeous piece and well-played by violinist Rebecca Hirsch. John Adams's electronic keyboard-based "Alone ... again or at last" is an odd closer; it sounds more like smooth jazz than classical music. Still, as classical compilations go, this set is one of the most eclectic and interesting available. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars Terrific, rarely heard music.......2002-07-06

The title of this compilation is incredibly accurate IF you enjoy modern music. It doesn't really fit the traditional, mainstream definition of relaxing music -- nice, quiet Mozart or Vivaldi, for example. It does, however, feature beautiful, powerful, sublime modern music. Each track is a revelation, from the more familiar Messiaen and Satie to the rest of the album, all pieces that I had not heard before. Paul Honey, Joseph Curiale, and James MacMillan all deserve a wider audience. Hopefully, their inclusion on this compilation will help them gain that audience.
