Album Description

Capoeira Angola, formerly a regional Brazilian form of self-defense and dance, has its roots in African traditions and is becoming popular in urban centers around the world, growing into a widely taught art form and philosophy. This call-and-response singing is accompanied by compelling rhythms played on berimbau and percussion instruments that express and control the performance of the Capoeira fight/dance. I had this CD reccommended to me by my Capoeira Angola instructor, and boy was he right. I own a lot of Capoeira CDs (mostly Regional music), and this is one of the best.

Frankly I was suprised to find that the CD contains some 39 tracks!!! The best of which are definitely the live tracks (I don't usualy care for live music recordings, but the sound quality of these is excellent, and really conveys the energy of the roda.

I had previously neglected to mention that the CD liner book contains a history of the art of capoeira as well as all of the song lyrics, and their translations (in english!)... That alone is worth the purchase, and makes this CD an extremely useful resource for anyone trying to learn the songs for classess (think text book).

Good stuff, a must own for anyone interested in Capoeira Angola.

I absolutely love this CD. The insert that comes with it gives a lot of useful information and it actually helped me brush up on my Portuguese. I've used this CD on long trips (I am in a performing arts group) and though no one else in the van understands why it keeps me awake when driving for 5-8 hours across country, there you will see me singing and smiling down the highway. I love this CD and recommend it for music aficionados and capoeiristas alike.

this is a great cd for both capoeiristas and world music listeners alike. it is the music for angola which is the more acrobatic capoeira. it is well recorded, beautiful and clear. i find that the music both gives you energy and helps you to focus, i often listen to it while working on my illustrations. i highly recommend!

I lived in Brasil and spent many years with Bahianos playing Capoeira on the beach, no school or teacher, just friends. I learned more from them than I've seen being taught in any school in the U.S. This music is just as traditional as the ones I played on my berimbau as we played through the night and day. It is a must for all capoeira practitioner who have a taste for the real thing.Buy it. Trust me. You'll love it

This was the first Capoeira CD that I bought. It has excellent liner notes that give a good background of Capoeira. However, what I found most helpful are the lyrics to the songs that are also printed in the liner notes, along with translations in English. It has helped me learn a lot of the songs our group uses.

I could write volumes and volumes about how brilliant this CD is. I've amassed a collection of about 40 capoeira CDs and I'd have to say this is just about the best one.

From this CD, you can learn many of the traditional capoeira songs as sung by one of the most amazing voices that the genre has known. Enthusiasm, energy, and authenticity...it's all wrapped in Suassuna's voice.

Get it while it's still available. You won't regret it!

This is an excellent CD. Great sound quailty. Every track gets 5 stars. This CD is great for working out or sitting back and listening to. It makes you want to grab your berimbau and start playing along. This is a must have for all capoeiristas.

      Sergio & Odair Assad made the world most famous guitar duo. They play in such a incredible virtuosistic and musical way, that you can hear them like a gigantic guitar, listining as a 12 strings guitar, never like two different instruments.I listen this beautiful CD many times, always astonished by the extraordinary musicality of the two musicians. The repertoire it is not the best, mixing some easy writing popular stuff with the work of two truly genius of the latin-american music, Villa-Lobos (Choros nº5/Lenda do Caboclo) and MARLOS NOBRE, the heir of Villa-Lobos, the world famous composer of our time in Latin-America, with the gems of the two-guitar repertoire, a truly favourite pieces, his "Cantiga de Cego", "Capoeira", "Martelo" and "Praiana" from his 15 pieces of the cycle "Ciclos Nordestinos I,II and III". This music it is the truly revelation and discover of this CD. The Duo Assad must now record the whole 15 pieces of this genial work from Marlos Nobre.

        Listening to this music without actually seeing the astounding acrobatics and physical movement of the capoeira martial art form is sort of like listening to a movie soundtrack without the movie: you miss the visual aspect, but it allows you to hear the music more fully. Guilherme Franco plays the Brazilian berimbau, a kind of bow with a metal string that is struck with a stick. The sound is like no other percussion instrument; it buzzes, it sustains, it alters pitch like a bent note on a steel-string guitar. Capoeira is a mix of solo pieces ("Juna," "Juna Verdadeira"), pieces accompanied by other instruments (drums on "Sao Bento Grande" and "My Beat," rattle on "Batida Nova Rapida," and flute on "Juna Ocarina"), and full-out songs. But this catalog only hints at the richness of this recording and of the sound the berimbau makes when Franco's stick strikes the string. --Genevieve Williams

        I have been practicing Capoeira for almost two yeas now and I have to say that this is a pretty good cd with some very interesting rhythms. This is definitely not a very good cd to practice to but it is great for those who enjoy the sounds of the berimbau and the songs of Capoeira.

        The review below claims that Guilherme Franco knows nothing about capoeira, but on the CD insert it says that Franco was trained under Paulo Gomes, a student of Mestre Bimba. The berimbau is also an important jazz instrument outside of the capoeira roda, and Franco's band Pe de Boi captures the spirit of the instrument. This CD has a broad range of tracks for both regional and angola, unfortunately no tracks for maculele. The chant tracks were lost on me, my group uses different chants in our rodas. This CD is a good representaion of the music of capoeira. Unfortunately, this is not a CD that can be listened to. It is impossible to fully enjoy this CD without playing it as background music during capoeira practice sessions.

        Lets be real, this guy has no right playing the berimbau. this was a terrible cd and i cant get over the fact that i brought it with outlistening to it first.

        The only people that can play the berimbau are people that play capoeira, and this guy knows nothing bout capoeira hence, knows nothing bout playing our great berimbau

Berimbau, reco-reco, pandeiro, agogo, and atabaque provide the rhythms for capoeira's different movements. Grupo Muzenza, established in May 1972, is led by Mestre Burguês Antônio Carlos de Menezes. The group has released several CDs and is well known in more than twenty-five countries around the world. The instruments played here include three different sizes of berimbau (a musical bow), two pandeiros (tambourines), and an atabaque (drum). Grupo Muzenza's main purpose is to spread capoeira and its philosophy, while always trying to bring back the value of the elder masters.
