About the Artist
Mahaeo (Creator) knows me as Standing Owl of Northern Cheyenne descent. I began playing the Native American flute in 1998. I had never intended to play for the public. I just enjoyed the spirit of the flute. As I traveled to Pow wows selling my crafts I was asked more and more to play my flutes during the drum breaks. The response from the public was overwhelming and eventually I was asked to be part of the program at many of the pow wows in the New England area. Since that time, I have played for audiences at schools, presentations on Native culture, library systems and historical societies. I had the honor of meeting Jeff Ball at a flute class that I was gifted. It was Jeff who unleashed the gift that Mahaeo had given me at birth. Jeff was nominated for best flutest of the year in 1998. His recording Cedar Moon won in its category in 2001 at the Native American Music Awards and he was nominated in 2002 for the Native Heart award for his recording "Prairie Runner! ". When Jeff came to the area he asked me to open on stage for him on one occasion and play with him on another. In May of 2002 I also had the opportunity to play on stage with Bill Miller. 2003 brought many playing engagements one such was held in Laconia, NH where I was asked to participate in a week long cultural series that show cased Native Artists. Many requests for another recording brought me into 2004 with the idea on the horizon. Most of the spring and summer were spent birthing new songs. With the help of fellow musician and producer Bruce Hilton of Ghost Hawk Studios my second CD has become a reality. On August 21st 2004 Night Flight II Return of the Owl released. I hope everyone receives as much pleasure hearing it as I did recording it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful set of orchestral music for an amazing price.......2007-08-05

I will admit that when I first ordered this 20 cd set from Amazon I was very skeptical and hesitant. I figured what kind of quality am I going to get for $16.97?! But when I got it in the mail and started listening to some of the cd's I was more than pleasantly surprised. The music contents on each is cd has the complete versions of the each song or theme. You know how a lot of cd sets just have the short versions or arrangemnts of songs to cut down on the price, but not on this set. Every cd runs anywhere from 1 hour to 2 hours of listening time. Even though the box set is called orchestral spectaculars if you like piano music there is a Liszt cd in the set with The Fantasy on Beethoven's The Ruins of Athens for piano, Malediction for piano and orchestra and Grande Fantasie Symphonique on Berlioz's Lelio for piano and orchestra. There is also a Rachmaninov in the set with his First Piano Concerto in F Sharp Minor and the original full length 30 minute version of his Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. Even if you listen to mostly piano music there are many versions based on them. For example, Brahms 21 Hungarian Dances that were written for solo piano, but in this set they are orchestrated. I had never heard the pieces like that before. It was nice to get a different perspective of the music. The same goes for Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition also written for piano, but here it is in a symphonic form and I enjoyed it just as much as the solo piano version. If you love opera, but are maybe someone that likes the orchestral part more than the singing there are many cd's in this set for that as well. There are 2 cd's of Wagner's music with my favorite prelude of all time Isolde's Love Death from Tristan and Isolde. Overtures from all of Rossini's and Rimsky Korsakov's operas. I think this cd would be a great place to start for someone who is new to classical music and doesn't want to spend a lot of money or if you love classical music as I do and want to hear new versions of your favorite pieces or just want to add to your cd collection you can do that for under $1.00 a cd. How many times have we all spent more than the price of this set for only one cd? I highly recommend this set. The sound quality and choices of music are excellent. Anyone who buys this will not be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Great mix of music though OK performance.......2007-02-07

Rimsky - Korsakov is one of the greats of Russian music who composed works for multiple genres such as ballets, operas, symphonies, overtures, concertos, etc. This two-disc set provides a good compilation of many of these works without resorting to the common method of taking 3 - 4 minute samples from multiple works that embody the most famous tunes from said works. Instead, the album includes multiple works in whole such as Scheherazade, the Tale of Tsar Saltan, Snow Maiden Suite, and The Russian Easter Festival Overture. The result is two discs with over an hour of music per disc. However, many of the works are quite unknown, and can require some patience to listen through and appreciate.

The orchestration and sound quality is only alright. For example, this album's performance of the Russian Easter Festival Overture was sub-par compared to what I have heard in other albums. Overall, a good buy, but not a great buy.

2 out of 5 stars Wow.........2006-04-28

Quite possibly one of the worst Scheherazade's I have ever heard from a "professional" orchestra. There is some REALLY BAD playing on here. I still can't believe that a recording would be put out where the playing can sound completely incompetent at times. I really don't understand that. This is NOT a good recording!! Just the fact that there are so many noticeable mistakes proves that. If you are a musician, this should bother you and make you wince.

Do yourself a favor and buy a different recording, either Bernstein with New York, Temirkanov with New York, or Maazel with Cleveland, or Concertgebouw or Philly. Any other recording will definitely be of better quality.

5 out of 5 stars Colorful, Romantic, Dramatic, and Consistently Musical !.......2004-03-09

In the past, I have enjoyed other Scheherazades, most notably those by Ormandy, Reiner, Monteux, Stokowski, Kondrashin and Beecham, especially the latter two. I must now include this marvelous Ansermet after re-acquainting myself with his performance after many years of neglect. While the Suisse Romande Orchestra has never been seen as having quite matched the reputations of the Philadelphia, Chicago Symphony and Concertgebouw Orchestras, it performs so magically and musically here that it seems to transport one on the proverbial flying carpet to exotic lands. Tones are rounded, sweet and golden, yet there is no slighting of drama. As conductor, Ansermet is in no hurry to impress with an eye and ear to sheer virtuosity. He proceeds with an easy flowing, characterful, sensuous style. I haven't heard many more satisfyingly rendered first movements than his. But the same holds true for the other three as well, especially the gorgeously fragrant third movement ( "The Young Prince and the Young Princess" ). Throughout the Ansermet/Suisse Romande performance there is a wonderful songfulness and a pleasing exotic ambiance. In many places, instrumental sounds simply glow....Virtually everything else on these discs is also a delicious treat, especially since such brightly varied pieces as Tale of the Tsar Saltan, The Christmas Eve Suite and The Snow Maiden have never been well represented in recordings, though I have enjoyed for some time Svetlanov's Tsar Saltan. All these works of Rimsky-Korsakov reveal one of the finest examples of a composer who possessed the wonderful ability to create splendid color and captivating tunefulness. And, I think, there were few other conductors who had Ernest Ansermet's talent to project these appealing delights with such endearing and satisfying musical expression.

5 out of 5 stars absolute magic.......2000-09-21

This should be an essential part of any Russian music lover's library. Ansermet had a particular affinity with this repertoire, and the very distinctive sound of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande make this a very endearing and memorable release. It's a paradox, but though Rimsky's orchestral pallette is opulent and technicolour in the extreme, it is not particularly lush in the R.Straussian sense - the timbres separate, and the clarity of the texturing in these OSR performances make every subtlety of the orchestration apparent: listen to the different ways Rimsky scores the same E major chord in the first movement of 'Scheherazade' - on this recording every register change tells.

Rimsky's warhorses get affectionate and detailed readings, but the main attractions here are the slightly off-beat repertoire. The suite from 'Christmas Eve', with its night flight through a ballet of stars, a witches sabbath and an imperial Polonaise: concluding with a koliadka (Ukrainian carol) and sunrise is a wonder: this is music of great breadth and childlike wonder which is unforgettable, here given a faultless performance. It is a shame the sections in this suite are not cued, however. The symphonic poem 'Sadko' is well done- the suite from 'Tsar Saltan' with its memorably titled second movement 'The Tsarina in a barrel at sea' is another classic, and Ansermet paces the discursive and sectional final movement 'The Three Wonders' very well: the portrait of the Swan Princess 'whose beauty is so great and who by night illuminates the earth' is mesmerizing. Two little quibbles: the vocal portions of the 'Snow Maiden' suite are not very pleasant and the 'Flight of the Bumblebee' is a mite arthritic, but this are incidental indeed. Enjoy this wonderfully vivid anthology: it's like a favourite book from childhood recreated in aural terms.

Cliburn Competition medallist Olga Kern plays Rachmaninov as if he wrote this music just for her. She's a virtuoso in the grand tradition, playing with a huge tone and brilliant fingerwork, captured with life-like realism by the engineers. The big work here is the Corelli Variations, a fiendishly difficult set of twenty variations on a Baroque sarabande, La Folia. The composer wrote it to wow his audiences, but it's also serious, full of with dark-toned poetry, serene lyricism, and a huge climax that ends in a poignant coda. Kern plays it with tremendous power and fleet agility. The rest of the disc consists of Rachmaninov's transcriptions of his own and other composers' music, ranging from romanticized Bach to an opulent rewrite of Schubert's Wohin? to his elaborate cadenza for Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2. Kern plays the Liszt with plenty of dash, evoking its gypsy flavor and exploiting its opportunities for virtuosity. Here's one competition winner who seems destined for stardom. -- Dan Davis

5 out of 5 stars Music to Treasure.......2007-06-20

Olga Kern, the young Russian pianist and Van Cliburn gold medal winner (2001), offers a wide-ranging selection of Rachmaninoff transcriptions, starting with J.S. Bach's superb Suite from the Partita in E major for violin. Many of these are favorites that the public has loved for decades: Rimsky-Korsakov's Flight of the Bumblebee, Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 with a cadenza by Sergei himself; plus lyrical and demanding arrangements from Bizet, Schubert, Mendelssohn, and Tchaikovsky. For this listener, the supreme moments are Olga's performance of Rachmaninoff's Variations on a Theme of Corelli, which have been recorded by many virtuosos. It was like hearing them for the first time--fresh, dynamic and radiantly powerful! If you are tired of reading wimpy movie, book and music reviews that leave you wondering whether to bite, here's one vote: say yes!

5 out of 5 stars Olga is a Pianist among Pianists.......2006-11-03

I was privileged to hear Olga perform at Zankell Hall at her Carnegie Hall debut several years ago. Her performances have a very rich individual flare, exactness and confidence. I was not disappointed with her then and I was not disappointed with this cd, Corelli Variations. On this cd, Olga's performances exude something definitely masculine. Though this may not appeal to everyone, it is simply a matter of every pianist having his individual style, feel and texture, if you will. Her playing is warm and vivacious at the same time, and what she says, she says beautifully. The programme is also quite captivating, especially the Bach transcriptions. Thank you Ms Kern!

5 out of 5 stars Ha ha! I have an autographed copy!.......2005-12-02

I was lucky enough to receive an autographed copy of this cd from my brother for christmas, who went to see Olga live, and it definitely made my favorite X-mas gift list. This cd has excellent selections, Olga is a veritable phenomonon, her interpretation and control of the piano is superb, if you love excellently performed classical piano music, use harpoons, tranquilizer darts, or anything else you may need to get this cd. Even if it isn't (sigh) autrographed...

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely essential -Virtousity at its best.......2005-03-11

Firstly i must say Im not very much fond of a solo piano but the first time i heard Olga Kern's Corelli Variations I immediately went to order this magnificent CD. Olga plays with maturity, virtoussity as if the music was written for her. I usually prefer the piano accompanied by a a violin or cello but this time around I was taken by surprise. ALL songs are out of this world I would not be able to describe the songs in musically terms but i know this is good. Go on thrill yourself with the best music. The inlay booklet is included with English, French& Dutsch translations with information about composer ,songs & artist. One might add that the outside cover of the CD is very artistically beautiful with red dress &shaded pianos background just like Ms Kern, so its not misleading, you know the saying "what u see is what u get".

We remember Rachmaninov today mostly for the music he wrote. But as this set quickly reveals, he was one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, able to play his own music and a great variety of others with tremendous personality and a technique that is still astonishing. There's no point picking highlights from this set, since they are everywhere. But if you've never heard Rachmaninov play Schumann's Carnaval, try starting there for one of the most imaginative recreations of a piece of music ever recorded. The set also includes Rachmaninov's only recordings as a conductor in two of his own major works. --Leslie Gerber

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Save some $ money! Get the newer January 2006 reissue set instead........2006-05-17

At the time of this review, whenever you search for a phrase such as "Rachmaninoff Complete", amazon's search engine always lands on this out-of-print recording (ASIN: B000003FB7) . It's also no fun to see that it costs more than a hundred bucks! But if you type "B000A2AD2S" in the search box, you'll see the new reissued set for half the price. It's the exact same 10 CDs. Just the cover art is different.

Unfortunately, this situation is a common pattern with amazon's listing of classical music: when you use your intuition and type in common-sense search phrases for Bach, Mozart, etc, you often get the ultra-expensive out-of-print ships-in-4-weeks items as the default item. It takes a lot of detective work to find the newer reissue recordings. For example, to find the new reissue without knowing the ASIN, I had to enter just "Rachmaninoff" in the search text (deliberately left the word "Complete" out of the search) so it would no longer lock me into this item page that you're looking at and give me a full listing instead. I then sorted the listing by "Original Release Date" and found it on the 2nd page. There's no picture on the new item which doesn't give you any confidence that you found the right one. Don't worry, B000A2AD2S is what you want.

For product research, it's good to have both ASIN product listings because the older out-of-print B000003FB7 has the sound samples (and also all the helpful customer reviews) while the new B000A2AD2S has the better price and availability.

To make things even more confusing, the amazon staff sometimes copies entire customer reviews to the new item which would then make THIS review seem strangely out of place. If that happens and I notice it, I will delete this review for B000003FB7.

(In another strange twist, amazon searches in rock/pop usually points you to the newer cheaper remastered/repackaged/reissued/whatever of a particular recording. I don't know why it works the opposite way in classical music?!?!)

5 out of 5 stars 6, or Even 7 Stars!.......2005-06-04

Hofmann hit the nail on the head when he said Rachmaninov had "arms of steel and heart of gold". From this album, we can have a clear picture of Rachmaninov's vison of music, of his musical mind and thoughts and moreover his own playing.

While Kempff's playing would often remind of the protestant church music, Rachmaninov bring to our mind the chanting of the Orthodox church, which is much thicker and darker. On top of that, his playing is orchestral which is so powerful and full colours. Yet, it is nothing like Richter, where often the whole piece is just one phrase.

Here each piece has it's own life and identity each with a focal point. It is water tight compact and yet very much natural and alive, never as hair-raising as Horowitz. But, it is not natural in Arrau's way. It is somewhere in between, closer to Argerich but with more consistency and depth. And like Casals' playing, it keeps our attention from the first note up to its focal point until its very end. But unlike Casals, he touches our hearts. It is very emotional but never to the point of being sentimental-- the performance of his own concertos, for example, can tell you that.

Sure, he did have fingers of steel that helped him to bring out whatever colour or atmostphere as appropriate. And despite that fact that there are some minor alterations on the scores like his Chopin, he is one of the few pianists who could really show you every note on the score counts and, above all, how it counts...

His Chopin may not be as neurotic as Cortot. Nonetheless, he sheds light on the dark and nervous side of Chopin so well: a very throbbing interpretation that is so unique. We also have him accompanying Kreisler on some violin sonatas, something that one could turn to time and again, year after year. What a great chamber musician and accompanist he was...!

The recorded sound of the CDs do vary, and some are more acceptable than the others. But for genuine music lovers, they should be able to get over this very soon: how else would they benefit from one of the greatest legacies of a genuinely great musician!

5 out of 5 stars A must have for Piano and classical music lovers.......2005-04-04

To respond to a review about the sound quality-for those people who have no experience with historical performances i.e cortot-hofmann-etc these discs are for the most part much better recorded. There are the inevitable pops and hisses but if these things disturb you, or you cant get past them, then you shouldnt be listening to this kind of thing anyway. the importance here is in the playing, and the playing is extra ordinary. I you want to buy a disc for the reperatoire then i can think of hundreds of performances that will satisfy, but only people with a true interest to hear and study these pieces will be beyond satisfied. I know that may not sound like a lot of fun, but these discs are fun, great, and for me, almost too good to be true. Again, if sound disturbs you, then you may be listening to the music for the wrong reasons. Take from it the playing, the revelations that Rach provides to his pieces, and how fortunate we are that it sounds as good as it does.

5 out of 5 stars Ah, Rachmaninoff, brilliant star of music, how we adore you.......2003-09-14

The music of Rachmaninoff is beyond words, furthermore, beyond imagination. He was a genius, no doubt, and nobody will ever understand how incredibly lucky we are to be blessed with his compositions. Furthermore, it is truly astonishing to hear Rachmaninoff play his own work. There is nothing so beautiful on this earth and there never will be.

4 out of 5 stars Review from a spoiled modern listener.......2003-07-13

I'll admit that I'm a spoiled modern listener, accustomed to having the bang and hiss edited out of a recording, and it took me a while to warm to these. Rachmaninoff's performances are splendid, but if you can hardly hear them over the cacophony of background noise, what's the use? His performance of his own, often overlooked Concerto No. 4 finally made me sit up and listen, even though I've owned two versions of this piece for a number of years (Ashkenazy & Wild).

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining.......2007-01-23

A very interesting pianist, this. He's an entertainer as well as a serious musician and he plays entertaining pieces. He is also a first class composer of transcriptions. Some of his charming Gershwin transcriptions (for which he is rightly famous) are included on this CD.

Earl Wild has an interesting pedigree in pianistic terms, having studied (if only briefly) with one of Liszt's many pupils. Technically he is often excellent, but some pieces seem to fall more easily under his fingers than others. For example, on another CD he makes rather a meal of Liszt's Grande Galope Chromatique but on this CD he plays superbly the fiendishly difficult Rachmaninoff arrangement of Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's Dream Scherzo - a piece which never lets up in its demand for a deft touch, accuracy and speed. Whatismore, the Scherzo is recorded live, so no editing and barely a single wrong note or misplaced phrase. Bear in mind that Rachmaninoff himself is reputed to have had three takes at it before ending up with a recording he was satisfied with! Overall I don't think Wild has the same order of technical ability as Horowitz, Rachmaninoff, Rubinstein, Barere or Cziffra but he does demonstrate the vital ability to make certain pieces sound "right" in his hands. This certainly doesn't manifest itself in everything he plays, but more in the pieces where he seems to feel at home.

He has obviously put a lot of thought and work into some of these recordings and I would single out the Schubert-Tausig March, Rigaudon, the Midsummer Night's Dream Scherzo, his Gershwin and Tschaikovsky transcriptions and the Blue Danube arabesques as particularly charming and well-performed. I doubt anyone could play his beautiful Embraceable You transcription as well as him. The 2nd Hungarian Rhapsody is also good - solidly played and with plenty of gypsy spirit, and he doesn't pull the piece about all over the place like most pianists do. And the Bumblebee isn't bad either. Also excellent is Gluck's Melodie d'Orphee. He plays this beautifully with exquisitely judged balance and tone. It's a shame some of the other pieces aren't quite as good - Isolde's Liebestod is off target, unfortunately.

I think Earl Wild was one of the great transcribers and it's a shame he didn't write a lot more transcriptions because each one is a beautiful addition to the piano literature. His short and sweet transcription of the Pas de Quatre from Swan Lake (which he plays on this CD) is a total masterpiece. He also dared to play entertaining pieces and to indulge in showmanship, and why not? Why should a concert be a dry lecture? Yes, he is one of the great pianists but not because he had a unique sound or technique - more because he was a great and daring performer and because he made a contribution to piano literature for which the world ought to be grateful.

4 out of 5 stars Riveting.......2000-07-03

This is an incredible CD, marred only by audience coughing and the unnecessary, deafening applause at the end of most cuts, reminiscent of a sitcom laugh track (hence the 4 star rating instead of 5); otherwise, it would have been perfect. The excellent selection of music and Wild's virtuoso playing are both marvelous. I was particularly taken with the Bach fuge and the splendid Gershwin transcriptions. Don't miss this one!

5 out of 5 stars A true romantic........2000-06-21

If you've never heard Earl Wild before, this is a good starting point for you. His technique is impeccable and his mastery of tone allows him to play the most intricate music in the clearest manner. I must admit this disc didn't grab my attention from the very beginning. I found many of these recordings to be an inconsequential jingle-jangle of notes with no true meaning. I still feel that way about the two Thalberg pieces. He may have been Liszt's worthy pianistic rival, but as a composer he comes nowhere close to the great Abbée. Here these pieces get as good a performance as they are likely to get. Also I think Moszkowski's arrangement of the D minor Prelude and Fugue is greatly inferior to Busoni's. I don't care for the way it's played here either. It's too rushed for my taste and it sounds too homophonic, I don't hear the counterpoint of the fugue. This, I believe, is the fault of the arranger and performer alike. The rest of the recordings are excellent. Schulz-Evler's Arabesques are brilliantly played although my favourite recording will always be Jorge Bolet's. Godowsky's transcriptions are so complex and crowded with melodic lines and sonorities that it will leave you gasping for breath. Their performance demands technical powers of the highest caliber. Without that the music will drown in notes. Earl Wild posesses precicely this technique, and in his hands these pieces sound spectacular. Henri Herz's variations may lack profundity but are charming nonetheless. The gems on this disc are Wild's "Virtuoso Etudes" after Gershwin. "Concert Etudes" would have been an even more appropriate title, for despite all the virtuosity, harmonic and melodic invention is the true protagonist. The mood ranges from witty to atmospheric and together with Wild's technique and beautiful tone these pieces create a wonderful unioun. Last but definently not least, I would like to mention the Glinka-Balakirev Fantasy. Here the art of transcription is at its peak and as before, Wild is in full command. Here especially is where his musical gifts shines the brightest. He has it all, perfect legato playing, beautiful singing tone and crystal clear pedaling. A flawless performance. Earl Wild is without doubt a member of the pianistic elite, an old school romantic. I for one think he would have deserved a second unit in the "Great Pianists" series.

5 out of 5 stars Redemption of the Transcription.......2000-02-24

Be prepared: the first piece on this album weaves such a magical spell that you may be startled out of your chair by the applause at the end. The bulk of this collection is from a concert performance, and it was a humdinger. Wild not only displays his astonishing virtuosity, but demonstrates that many of these arrangements and transcriptions are valuable pieces of music in their own right. The Rameau becomes 20th-century neoclassicism through Godowsky and Wild. The Arabesques on the Blue Danube Waltzes becomes a more serious piece than the original ever was. And so on: the bottom line is it's an experience that you don't want to miss. The real gems of this collection, however, are not from the live recital: what I find myself going back to again and again are the Gershwin transcriptions by Wild himself. Breath-taking virtuosity, fascinating arrangements, a beautiful recorded sound, and some great tunes!

5 out of 5 stars Perspective into my family.......2003-07-30

Jorge Bolet is my grandmother's brother. I never knew him, but I remember watching a performance recorded on video once. It was mesmerizing! He is an amazing performer.

Born in Cuba, Jorge Bolet represents all that I have never come to know from my fatherland. I hope to continue enjoying this and other of his recordings and teaching my children of my father's country, and the greatness that once came out of there.

Pray for Freedome for our Cuba.

5 out of 5 stars Suave Chopin preludes, and lots of encores & transcriptions.......2003-03-31

Jorge Bolet, in spite of his massive technique and impeccable musicianship, did not, early on, have as big a career as one might have expected. But in 1974 he mounted an unusual recital at Carnegie Hall that brought him to greater attention, and a few years later he recorded a large Liszt series to general acclaim. It was that latter series that put him on my own pianistic radar screen, and he remained a favorite.

This 2-CD set, part of the Philips 'Great Pianists of the 20th Century' collection, contains a live recording of that landmark 1974 recital. The main substance in that recital was a traversal of the Chopin Preludes. There are other complete Preludes in the Philips collection, those of Argerich, Arrau, Cherkassky and Cortot. I wouldn't want to be without any of them (except perhaps those of Argerich; for all her élan, she is too much the speed merchant for my taste). Of all these sets, Bolet's is the least idiosyncratic. Considering they are 'live,' they are amazingly clean. But more important, they are somewhat understated, unfailingly songful, and not showily virtuosic, although they are actually somewhat faster overall than Arrau's or Cherkassky's.

The other pieces in this set are primarily beautifully shaped encores and transcriptions, specialities of Bolet throughout his career; his program-building was often reminiscent of that of the Golden Age masters like Lhevinne, Friedman and the like. I particularly liked the Bach/Busoni Chaconne and Moszkowski's bijou, La jongleuse.

1 out of 5 stars I AGREE! BANGA-BANGA-BANGA-BANGA!.......2002-06-11

I agree with the previous reviewer's impressions: Banga-banga-banga-banga!
Like John Grabowski , I wonder if I am missing something about Bolet's performance or about this recording.
After anxiously listening for some sign of genius in Bolet's colorless and sophomoric renditions of Busoni's Chaconne and Chopin's Preludes, I had to stop the second CD when Schulz-Evler Arabesques on "The Blue Danube Waltz" and especially Liszt's Overture zu Tannhäuser assaulted my by then injured sense of musicality and tympanic membranes.
I hope the 2 CDs in Bolet II of this series are not as disappointing!

2 out of 5 stars Banga-banga-banga-banga!.......2001-12-13

I don't get the reputation of these recordings. For 45 agonizing minutes, we get to hear Jorge Bolet, a pianist without color or poetry, bang his way raggedly though Chopin's magnificent Preludes. When he's done with those, he bangs his way through a piano transcription of Wagner's Tannhauser Overture as though he's chasing a mouse with a jackhammer. I don't hear all the virtuosity everyone else is hearing. I hear brittle fingers, a right hand that's behind the left hand, and general inexpressiveness. There are moments all right--the Johann Strauss/Carl Tausig works at the end of disc 1 are pleasant and charming. Then again, I've never heard them before, so I don't have better performances as a yardstick, and perhaps my admiration would shrink if I did. As for the Preludes, good god, these are possibly the worst readings I've ever heard, with many score indications simply ignored and others perverted beyond recognition (accents, tempi, accents, dynamics, accents...). Try Cortot, Arrau, Moravec, even Kissin for better Preludes, and just about anyone else for better Rachmaninoff.

5 out of 5 stars Charming.......2001-02-19

A truly powerful and charming performance by Jorge Bolet. Arabesques On 'An Der Schonen, Blauen Donau'(Track #1) was absolutely gorgeous and quite possibly the best live piano performance ever heard. Do yourself a favor and add this must to your collection.

The music is excellent, with high quality sound. Not irritating as some classical music can be. Plus the tempo's are varied which is great depending if you need something fast paced or more slow. Best of all, the kids enjoyed it!

How to gently insert a little culture into the grandkids' lives without Mom freaking out.....send this set of CDs for Christmas. Dad's into heavy metal and Mom, although she has a long history of listening to Classical music as a child, is now into Country. Nothing wrong with that, but how are the three little ones going to hear any of the Classics with Grandma living more than 600 miles away? "Play this in the background while they're having creative time," said I, "and see if they don't enjoy it." When I talked with them a week later the 4 year old couldn't wait to tell me how much he liked the "playtime music" I'd sent him. The quality of the recording is good and the variety of rhythms and tempos make it interesting. Yes they're a little trite and you're going to have to explain that the theme to "the Bad News Bears" really is Classical, but that's okay. If they skipped the genius of Mozart as an infant, or even if they teethed to "the Magic Flute", these CDs will give them a taste of a variety of good music and who knows how far into the Classical realm it may send them as they mature?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Idil amazing.......2006-07-19

No other performer compares to idil. HANDS down. HEr unique and individual style sets her apart from every other performer past and present.

Her recording of Rachmaninov's prelude in C sharp minor can only be topped by rachmaninov himself.

Every time i hear i new song from her, i feel i grow as a pianist.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Rachmaninoff at a good price........2002-07-10

Buy this box set. Biret is great. She plays Rachmaninoff straight up and doesn't taint the compositions with any wild "interpretations." And the recording quality is five star, too. I bought this in order to snag some lesser known Rachmaninoff that I loved (Cinq Morceaux, Moments Musicaux, etc.) and I really got what I paid for. Take a look at the huge tracklist - this is the Rachmaninoff you've been missing out on.
