Kirtan is the communal call-and-response chanting and singing, over and over, of the many names of the Hindu gods and goddesses. The practice is intended to invoke these deities, and by so doing, make the participants become one with them. It is an offering of spirit and feeling, a prayer; a devotional practice set to music. Unlike Krishna Das's excellent Live on Earth (For a Limited Time Only), a live recording of kirtan sessions that's easy to chant along with at home, Jai Uttal's Nectar: Live Kirtan & Pagan Remixes is headier--more of a listening experience. Interspersing street recordings from India and electronica-infused remixes, along with live kirtan recordings, Uttal offers a devotional and intense musical experience. The 25-minute trance-inducing "Om Namah Shivaya" alone is worth the price of the CD for the inner journey it will take you on. Another highlight, Ben Leinbach's "Radha (Remix)," samples vocal elements of the Radha mantra and beautifully places them in a hypnotic and pulsating electronic world-music bed. "Big Wheel (Remix)" masterfully reworks more of the Radha chant in a surprising dub-heavy arrangement. With the exception of the wailing vocal supplication, "Opening the Gates," which will probably appeal to mostly hardcore chant fans, Nectar is accessible and moving. Uttal, who has been leading kirtan sessions for 30 years, likens kirtan to "an oil well digging deeper and deeper into the heart. A power tool of love and longing." While some devote hours, years, or a lifetime to the practice of kirtan, the sweet spot, or nectar, of this CD is that it can give a glimpse of the union with spirit--and what a sweet spot that is. --Kevin ColeCustomer Reviews:

Yet he does go into the studio and play with remixing some of the live tracks. The "Radha Remix" and the "Big Wheel Remix" are groovy.
A beautiful rendition of the song to Shri Hanuman on "Bajarangi".
A taste of Psycedelia on the "Namah Om Remix" that sends me into the sea aboard the Yellow Submarine.
Thanks Jai.

A long-time fan, and I love it.......2003-12-20
Brooks is paying tribute to his extremely rich set of influences on this album. He admires the music from when pop used to be a GOOD word, instead of evoking images of mostly naked teenagers dancing with large snakes.
Sonically, this album is fat and sassy. In contrast to the spare production of his other albums, which were largely Brooks's work, he's gotten a great producer to work with him on this one. The album is impeccably consistent from start to end, and I think Brooks was really happy with the process. He said "I was so tired of working so hard on recording the albums, I just wanted to hand over the reins and see what happened while I enjoyed playing music instead of nitpicking details." That's a semi-quote. In any case, the new producer really brought a lot to it -- I daresay he enjoyed having the free rein as much as Brooks enjoyed letting it go. The songs are pretty densely arranged as a result, with (gasp!) electric guitar and a very different set of hooks (guess who? Yes, Mr. Producer helped arrange and sits in on the electric guitar).
Brooks's voice is also recorded quite differently from past albums, which gives it a breathier sound, a bit closer to you but a bit standoffish as well. It works well, much better than my description, which is sort of like dancing about architecture, if you know what I mean. This is a tough review to write!
The songwriting is stock Williams, really solid lyrics and music. It's only different in that a) it's not the same songs and b) it's produced differently. If you know what I mean, you know that this is a strong compliment.
All in all, one of my favorite albums. Do yourself, get a copy, a pair of Sennheisers, and spend an evening with it. Write back if you're not convinced.
A real departure for Brooks.......2003-04-16
I didn't really need to hear another version of "Mother Earth," but other than that there isn't a wasted moment on the album. Also, the production on this album just blows away any of his previous albums. Phil "The Funk Monster" Madeira and his B-3 organ are a perfect match for Brooks' style.
Sorry to say I agree........2003-04-06

Album Description
Edwin London (b. 1929) is one of the most original and accomplished composers in America today. Unwilling to ally himself with any trendy school of composition, and refusing even to see himself as either a radical or a conservative, he has gone his own way for many years, creating beautiful, challenging, inventive, marvelous music. These five choral works, though vastly different in conception, are nonetheless all expressions of the complex and multifaceted personality of their composer.Jove's Nectar is a series of seven character variations, based on the well-known lyric by Ben Jonson, Drink to me only with thine eyes, originally titled To Celia.
Moon Sound Zone, based on a poem written by the composer, is uncannily beautiful, hardly the music we might expect from a procedure that utilizes all twelve notes of the chromatic scale in a mathematically derived distribution.
Psalm of These Days I and V are the opening and closing segments of a cycle of five interrelated, but varied, vocal/instrumental works based on Psalm texts and written between 1977 and 1980. Inspired in part by ideas suggested by William James's The Varieties of Religious Experience, the cycle offers impressions of religious character types and postures ranging from the once born soul through rationality to the sick soul, the mystic experience and the eventual emergence of the twice born soul. The cycle is not religious music per se, but rather is about religious music.
In Bach (Again) a Bach chorale (actually, any Bach chorale of the performers' choosing) is deconstructed, as each sonority, indeed each note, is elongated so that it comes to be appreciated more for its inherent beauty than for its participation in a harmonic and contrapuntal progression toward a cadence.
