Anyone who attended one of the New York "Gypsy Caravan" tour concerts will probably recall Fanfare Ciocarlia's unwillingness to let the evening end. After the final encore, the multi-generational Romanian brass ensemble marched and shimmied around the hall, playing hell-bent-for-leather, to the delight of exiting patrons and the dismay of exhausted venue staffers. Some of their fabled brand of antic lunacy was captured during Jasmine Dellal's recently released Gypsy Caravan documentary but the 14 tunes on this album make an even better souvenir. Famed for their intricately interwoven thematic lines and insanely fast tempos, as well as for spot-on accuracy amid what sometimes sounds like total mayhem, the ensemble meant this album to be a memorial for their late bandleader, Ioan Ivancea. With this in mind, they invited the cream of European Roma (the correct term for "Gypsy") musicians to participate, creating a breathtakingly star-studded roster. Esma Redzepova, known far and wide as Macedonia's "Queen Of The Gypsies," is here in all her clarion-voiced emoting extravagance, along with Bucharest-based pop star Dan Armeanca, Kal from Belgium, Mitsou from Hungary, Bulgaria's Jony Iliev, plus many more. All are wonderful, each in his or her own way. The final track is Fanfare's bound-to-become-immortal cover of Steppenwolf's "Born To Be Wild," originally recorded for the Borat soundtrack. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars Passionate!.......2005-02-27

This album is beautiful, I hope there is a new geneartion of musicians that can carry on the "FEELING" of gypsy music because that's exactly what it is. I don't only hear it I feel it, when I come across an album that reminds me of the music I heard in restaurants, or music halls in Hungary as a child I tear up. I dream of the day I can return to Europe and enjoy live music again. Until then, this is as close as it gets. Thank you for this album :-)

1 out of 5 stars Disappointment Ensured.......2005-01-06

Altho the selections are fine and typical of the robust music associated with gypsy violins, the QUALITY of the recording is abysmal and sounds as if it were recorded by a hand-held tape recorder. Definitely NOT recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking.......2004-09-10

The tracks in this CD took my breath away, classical Hungarian music, my favourites are track 9 and track 1, could not stop dancing..awesome... I would buy more copies for friends.

3 out of 5 stars a meditative spin on gypsy music.......2003-11-15

Gypsy purists won't like it.But if you enjoy classical music also, you may get something out of this. The violin sound does not screetch at you.It dawns on you.So its more a meditative listen.Theres upfront violin and orchestral, with light cimbalom to add to the flavour.
The title and cover are poor choices.Because, even though it contains gypsy elements, the music is not as traditional as that.
(If a 'hybrid' is what u seek, then u may find it's worth more stars than 'I' gave it).

4 out of 5 stars What do we mean by "Gypsy Music"?: Excellent CD.......2003-10-15

Right off the bat, a distinction should be made between the music of the Gypsies (that is music played by Roma for Roma) and the music played by Gypsies (music played by Roma for others). This album is a fine example of the of the latter style as it was played 50 or so years ago.

The CD includes many standard songs that were played by Roma ensembles in the cities of Europe and North America and that were beloved by their audiences. To dismiss this music as so much "restaurant music" strikes me as racist, at best. This is music that has has great artistry and feeling and into which the performers invested great artistic effort. Much of repetoire represents a close colaboration between Roma and non-Roma. It also reflects the way in which popular songs of the day were ( and are) adapted by Gypsy musicians and given a distintive performance style. Furthermore, the performances maintain a certain "rawness" that I feel is lost in the virtuosity of recordings of "ciganyzene" from Hungary made in the 25 years.

The music represents the interaction of several cultures - music from Hungary, Russia, Romania, Moldavia and England(yes, Noel Coward's "Ziguener"!). To discount the value in this music is to relegate the Roma ONLY to those songs sung around the campfire and played by amateurs (a music that I also happen to like, by the way).

My major criticism of this CD is that it is entirely lacking in meaningful program notes. The names of the performers, date and name of the issue of these recordings would be helpful. Clearly these recordings were made before the advent of modern recording techniques, but that is about all we can tell.

5 out of 5 stars TZIGANI!.......2000-07-31

This is truly intoxicating and heady music. If you imagine a brass band (usually synonomous with 'military' music), shaken hard, a rhythm section as tight as can be, playing what can only be equated to a gypsy version of speed metal - you still don't come anywhere close to describing how breathtaking this group plays. I saw them live 3 months ago in london, and the nearest description i can give is like being in a east european rhythmic earthquake. This band plays on the edge of the believable and is probably what the devil listens to when throwing a party. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED...

5 out of 5 stars exuberant and mesmerizing musica tiganeasca.......2000-05-03

Uplifting, tight and captivating rom music, played with anincredible speed in an upbeat tempo. The rythm, propelled by drivingpercussions, tight tuba and woven together with blazing, butoccasionally dreamy, clarinet, trumpet and saxophone solos, compells dance movement. This exuberant melange of various Balkan and Turkish styles has also elements of klezmer in it. A great follow-up to Fanfare Ciocarlia's first CD "Radio Pascani". Buy it and play it loud and often!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Party Album!.......2000-05-03

It is almost impossible to believe that people can play as fast and as tight as Fanfare Ciocarlia. These twelve guys can play like no one else I've ever heard. The music is not only fast, but beautiful and uplifting. This is definitly one of the best albums of 2000!

5 out of 5 stars Baro Biao:World Wide Wedding.......2000-03-21

I now have both CD's by Fanfare Ciocarlia...and I find that if you want "bouncy" upbeat brass band music in an Eastern European manner, thisx is the type of music to have. The music is addicting and once started, your feet will not stay still! There is a problem...trying to find these CD's!

You're probably familiar with the flamenco fireworks of Spain's bestselling Gipsy Kings. But there are nearly as many types of Gypsy music as there are countries in which the Gypsies--or Roma--have settled since dispersing from Rajasthan, India, more than a thousand years ago. The highlights of this nicely documented compilation include Romania's Fanfare Ciocarlia, a brass band that plays a sort of speed klezmer at dizzying tempos; the Rajasthan ensemble Musafir, who weave serpentine melodies on the dumbek drum and flute; the warm clarinet and accordions of Italy's Acquaragia Drom; and the richly arranged 12-piece Taraf de Haidouks, also from Romania. What else? Sad, folk-singing British Gypsies (Jasper and Levi Smith), elegant and haunting Greek Gypsies (Eleni Vitali, Kostas Pavlidis), and Hungary's raucous and jazzy Kalman Balogh. And the diversity of the flamenco Gypsies is of course amply demonstrated by Pata Negra, Tomatito, and the duo of El Indio Gitano and Gerardo Nunez. --Richard Gehr

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good, but there are better.......2002-07-07

This CD is a good collection of genuine gypsy music, but I have heard better. Gypsy Caravan by Putumayo is more accessible for the general public in my opinion. Another absolutely fantastic collection of Gypsy music can be found in the CD Latcho Drom. This CD is actually a soundtrack to a brilliant and beautiful documentary of that same name, and I would recommend anyone who is even remotely interested in gypsy music to see it. It is absolutely stunning!!

5 out of 5 stars Incredible! Impressive! Irresistable!.......2002-05-10

This tapestry of *irresistible* gypsy music from Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey, the Balkans (Kosovo, Macedonia), Rajasthan (India), Hungary, Romania, England and as far north as Finland, is woven into a timeless, seamless whole! Most *impressive* is the root sound that essentially remains unaltered no matter from which country the music arises. The improvisations and embellishments are indefinable and original spanning many centuries and musical styles. However, it is interesing to see that Finnish gypsy rhythm & melody is similar to that of Italy, Hungary, and Romania. Also, Balkan gypsy music by Madhe Krushe has strong influences of the traditional instruments played in Bulgaria, Macedonia, & Kosovo. The raw firey vocals of the Spanish gypsies unearth a vitality and dynamism no other singers emulate. The Greek gypsies express deep haunting passion and emotions, as only those of Meditarranean extraction can do ... Taraf de Haidouks & Kalman Balogh are world reknown Central European musicians, their music is synonomous with the culture and traditions of Romania and Hungary respectively. Rough Guide provides the greatest diversity of gypsy music I have yet enountered in any one CD! They cover Eastern and Western Europe, the Balkans, a bit of Asia, & most surprisingly Finland, too! This is an *incredible* *not* *to* *be* *missed* CD!!! BUY IT!!!

5 out of 5 stars correction.......2002-04-10

I would like to offer a correction to the first editorial review given for this album. The Gypsy Kings are not from Spain, they are from Southern France.

5 out of 5 stars Entrancing and pure.......1999-11-06

An excellent musical montage from around the world, this album is both a contemporary look into the passion of the Gypsy soul and an historical view of the traditions of these nomadic, intense and complex people. If you are interested in taking your emotional pulse, this CD is just what the doctor ordered.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......1999-09-28

A superb collection of gypsy music from around the world. Having listened to it you will want to further explore this fascinating culture and its music.

Dona has a romantic and passionate voice I have never heard before. He is outstanding. What a pity that I cannot hear him singing a life. I am so sorry for his early death. I want to find out whether there are musical festivals in Romania.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-01-06

Lovingly produced record as are all in this series (I bought 3 so far), with very good and interesting liner notes. Music is surprizing and unusual even if you are familiar with Rumanian gypsy idiom.I bought it to hear a "male version of Romica Puceanu" and you know what? Dona Dimitru Siminica sings in the same register and style as Romica, using a high falsetto voice, in a countertenor register with unbelievable control and unearthy beauty.

This band takes the cake! I've never heard anything like this music. It is raucous and joyous, old-world and technicolor, traditional and completely unexpected, virtuosic and totally unselfconscious!

This is not 'background music' or music for a candle lit dinner.

But it is utterly human music, and I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Fast, furious,.. and perfectly in time.......1999-05-09

These guys are amazing. Their music is faster than Cradle of Filth and much tighter. Using trumpets, saxophones, clarinets, tubas and a big bass drum, these guys create amazing sounds. Quite hard to get hold of here in Australia, but well worth the effort.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A gem of gypsy music.......2006-11-26

Romica Puceanu is a classical gypsy vocalist. This is a great album of her music. Her voice is tearful and textured, while the instrumentalists provide outstanding accompaniment.

    5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Recording.......2006-09-13

such a great record... i've heard many of her recordings with less than excellent audio quality and this re-mastered effort simply shines... instrumentally, the gore brothers are incredible, certainly as accomplished as the more well-know taraf de haiduks... really excellent liner notes describing her career and the place this music had in the lives of everyday romanians during the heights of the reign of communist terror...one of the best re-releases of this, or any year...

    5 out of 5 stars In a better world..........2006-05-31

...you'd all know about her. She is the most soulful of Romanian singers, with a bluesy, nasal quality that sets her apart. And these are some of her classic recordings, with a magnificent ensemble. My first hearing of her voice (on an old Electrocord LP) was a revelation. And the remastering job here captures the plusses of the LP sound, without the minuses. If you love Taraf de Haidoucks or whatever, you need this. I feel a bit of a sense of mission here: fewer and fewer companies are attempting these kind of reissues, and those that still do should be supported (IMHO).
