Unendurably beautiful.......2000-06-27

I had to stop the car. I was listenening to this and I had to stop. I was in Australia in the heat in the summer of 1992 and I was taking my children back home from work, and my daughter had just been born, and I heard this.

Mendelssohn creates music of such beauty, his great strength is in string writing, and you should listen to his string quartets too.

I can't possibly objectively comment on this piece, I have neither the descriptive power, or the right to express such things. I don't know where this music comes from, or what to do about it, I think all you can do is to be grateful and thank God that there are such things and they are still here in the world.

A disc of haunting lyricism and energy.......1999-04-11

This disc brings together fascinating chamber music by one of the most wonderful composers of our time. Weir's music truly is full of wonder, and also the great gift of an immediately memorable sound-world - and from the smallest number of instruments.I have heard - and performed - hundreds of pieces of new music and, though there have been equals, none have been more compelling to me on first hearing (nor more satisfying to perform) than Distance and Enchantment and the other works on this disc.
