5 out of 5 stars NEO-TRADITIONAL JAPANESE ON TRADITIONAL INSTRUMENTS . . ........2004-04-12

___________________________________________________________________________________________

This album was my introduction to Japanese music and I continue to consider it one of the best. Most of the music is neo-traditional and by that I mean music composed by contemporary artists. Not completely devoid of western influence, neo-traditional Japanese continues in the classical Japanese tradition though the melodies are more complex. The pieces on this CD are played on koto (stringed instrument) and shakuhachi (flute). The shamisen (3 stringed instrument) is used along with the other two in the rendition of Star Dust. This is most definitely a 5 star album. All songs are very soothing and restful.

5 out of 5 stars Masters of Zen.......2003-12-10

This has long been one of my favorite albums to listen to while drinking green tea and snacking on wagashi. It's a great album. Quiet, never intrusive and always magical. If you are making a romantic Japanese dinner for someone, play this in the background. It's sure to please.

5 out of 5 stars Bamboo duo.......2004-09-14

This is a jazzy shakuhachi duo (shakuhachi is the traditional Japanese bamboo flute.) If you like the sound of the shakuhachi, but want something fresh-sounding, this is your CD.

The duo of Hidekazu Katoh and Richard Stagg takes the shakuhachi to a new plain of merged jazz improvisation with Japanese sensibility. The fun parts are where the two independent flutes suddenly come together in unison, then drift apart again, always in harmony. It's uncanny. Very interesting CD and highly recommended for anyone who likes flute.

5 out of 5 stars Challenging re-imagining of an ancient instrument.......2004-07-27

A fine set of exploratory compositions on the Japanese bamboo shakuhachi flute... These duets are challenging and original, a fresh take on this ancient instrument; they don't have the same sustained contemplative tone as other, Zen-oriented shakuhachi albums -- indeed, there's almost an avant-garde tone to many of these performances -- but it's still quite a rich, engrossing record. Recommended!
