This could have been 5 stars. I put four because, I'm no expert on french songs. But this appears to be an excellent selection. Lucienne Boyer's "Parlez-moi d'amour" which I've obviously heard before was a revelation -- I forgot how good it was -- I play it over and over. A good introduction, I think. By the way, the songs and recordings are mostly from the 30's.

Why Copy-Controlled?.......2004-07-13

The cover of this 2-CD set is so beautiful that I was almost tempted to buy it right away, not to mention the several never-released pieces. But why bother to implement the copy-control codes? First, such code makes it not playable on some computers and even some expensive audio CD players; secondly, many users have already reported that such code makes the recording sound weird. It is, therefore, very ironical that on one hand recording engineers have struggled to improve the sound quality of the recording while on the other hand the code lowers the sound quality. While some people may blame the historical recording for the questionable sound quality, the same weird and somewhat digital/mechanical sound effect can be heard on even the recent copy-controlled CD's such as Sarah Brightman's "Harem". Thus this could-have-been-wonderful 2CD-set does not deserve more than 3 stars simply because of the redundant and avoidable copy-control code so implemented that unduly and unavoidaby worsens the sound.

Don't purchase if you want to play on a computer.......2004-05-03

This CD is "copy controlled", though that fact is not listed in the product details. It won't play on my system (an mp3 media center).

The music may be fantastic, but I'm returning to get a different Piaf CD.

The ultimate Edith Piaf CD.......2003-11-21

Just purchased Eternelle Les Plus Grandes Chansons d'Edith Piaf in Paris (where it is being featured) and think it is the best compliation of her work. Excellent reproduction - even the scratchy songs from the 30's and 40's are of good quality. All of her good songs (43) on 2 discs.

Am impressed to find this CD at Amazon.com, and at a lower price than we just paid in Paris!

Y A PAS QUE GAROU AU QUEBEC.... ET C'EST TANT MIEUX.......2004-03-26

De l'autre côté de l'Atlantique, la chanson Québécoise se résume à la variété que je ne qualifierai pas ici ( pas le droit aux gros mots) du style Garou, Céline Dion et le reste(ça doit faire du bien de se débarasser d'eux!) ... Seul Charlebois sortait un peu de cette soupe. Bref, si l'on n'est pas curieux, impossible de connaître les Cowboys Fringants, Jean Leloup ou les Collocs... Et bien quelle faute ! Les Cowboys ont une pêche d'enfer, des textes à la fois drôles et touchants, avec un recul énorme. 12 GRANDES CHANSONS est un bon album où les " tounes" majeures sont Impala Blues, Gaétane, Evangeline, Plattsburg, Repemtigny by the sea et l'Agaspesie. Ballade, blues,folk, un grand bol d'air que l'on peut approfondir avec leurs autres albums. Que du bon !!!

Des Cowboys Fringants comme on les aime!.......2004-02-10

Malgré les moyens d'enregistrement un peu plus simplistes de l'époque, ces deux disques prouvent que dès le début, les Cowboys Fringants connaissaient leur créneau: textes humoristiques, sarcastiques, dramatiques, rythmes accrocheurs, arrangements de choix, etc. Vous aimez "Break Syndical" et "Motel Capri" et vous en voulez plus? Vous serez enchantés par ces deux "débuts". Si vous ne connaissez pas encore les Cowboys, enlevez-vous les doigts du nez et procurez-vous d'abord "Break Syndical". Une fois accrochés, vous serez murs pour "Motel Capri" et cet amalgame "12 grandes chansons/Sur mon canapé".
