3 out of 5 stars Average Buffett Album.......2006-11-07

By 1976 Buffett had developed a solid cult following, but had still to really hit the big time. That would come with his next album "Changes In Latitudes", but on "Havana" he had yet to jump on the platinum bullet train. Buffett's backing unit The Coral Reefer Band was fully realized by this album, and the main players would remain with Buffett for years to come, some to this day. The album is again a mix of originals and covers with songs by Steve Goodman ("This Hotel Room"), Jesse Winchester ("Defying Gravity"), Fingers Taylor ("Big Rig"). I don't think that this album stands up to either the previous one "A1A" or the next one "Changes In Latitudes", but it does have it's moments. "My Head Hurts, My Feet Stink, And I Don't Love Jesus" was a clever novelty song with the very young Oak Ridge Boys providing backing vocals. The title track "Havana Daydreaming" is classic buffet. "Kick It In Second Wind" is an autobiographical rocker that tells the story of the band. For some reason he also re-records "The Captain And The Kid" which was originally on the "Down To Earth Album". The new version is pretty much the same as the old one. This album was recorded at the height of Buffett's partying days and there are several references to various drugs and alcohol found on the disc. I rate this as an average disc in the overall Buffett catalogue.

5 out of 5 stars Jimmy Buffett delivers the goods........2006-04-01

This album is great stuff. It really has a unique sound that separates itself from alot of his work in the 1970's. You can close your eyes and transport yourself to the shores and climate of Key West once you put this on for a spin. The album contains some of Jimmys best writing along with alot of clever humor in the tracks. This is one of Jimmys best albums by far and a definite must for any fan.

5 out of 5 stars Havana Daydreamin'.......2006-02-27

I have been looking for a particular song by Jimmy Buffett and I was able to search Amazon and find this CD with the song I wanted. It was very easy and the CD has some of his best songs on it.

4 out of 5 stars Important stuff is here, but not his best album.......2006-02-01

Of course this is a great album. Who doesn't have their own "Captain" in their life? I play the Captain and the Kid whenever I feel maudlin. It touches a chord very deep within.

4 out of 5 stars Great Artwork, OK Album.......2005-10-01

The artwork on the album cover is was drew me to this album. While it is not as strong as some of Jimmy's earlier stuff, you are sure to find your own favorites off this album. My personal favorite, besides the title track, is "This Hotel Room." It will have you gasping for breath from laughing.

Album Description

Set against the decadent glamour and escalating danger of revolution-eve Cuba, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights re-imagines the 1987 film phenomenon from an exciting new perspective. Havana Nights tells a timeless story of a young woman's discovery of love, sensuality and independence - but with a sizzling style and rhythm all its own. In planning this new chapter in a beloved franchise, Artisan Entertainment and Miramax Films have put together a team of creative dynamos from the worlds of film, music and dance. Among them: maverick independent producer Lawrence Bender (Pulp Fiction, Good Will Hunting); executive producer Sarah Green (Frida); Academy Award. winning screenwriter Ron Bass (Rain Man, My Best Friend's Wedding); director Guy Ferland; screenwriter Pamela Gray (A Walk on the Moon); choreographer Joanne Jansen; music industry legend Clive Davis, whose hot J Records imprint will release the soundtrack; acclaimed actor Diego Luna, a rising star following his performance in the sexy sensation Y Tu Mama Tambiin; and, in what promises to be a breakout role, gifted young actress Romola Garai (recently seen in Nicholas Nickleby). The resulting film is certain to give audiences - from newcomers to those who cherish the first Dirty Dancing - the time of their lives, and then some!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Dirty Dancing - Havan Nights Soundtrack.......2007-04-07

Purchased for my daughter and myself after seeing the film. It is a lively mix of sultry, sensual salsa music which gets the feet moving and the singing and body going too! Exciting! Motivating! Fun! Not just for latin music lovers but for people who love life and enjoy being ALIVE!!!!!
Right up there with Otmar Liebert with Nouveau Flamenco and The Gypsy Kings to get the juices flowing and the body grooving to the music! We love it!

2 out of 5 stars not good.......2007-03-13

These songs are cheesy and not even close to good latin dance music

5 out of 5 stars Let the rhythm take you away.......2007-03-08

Was your foot tapping as your watched the movie? Even if you didn't like the film buy this CD and let the lating rhythm take you away.

5 out of 5 stars Havana Nights.......2007-02-08

I did not care for the movie Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights but the soundtrack is AMAZING. It has everything from slow dancing to fast step dancing type of music. I would tell anyone who loves Latin music that this soundtrack is a must have.

4 out of 5 stars Very Impressive.......2007-01-27

I was very impressed with this CD. When I watched the Havana Nights, the thing that captivated me was the MUSIC. This soundtrack had all of the best songs from the movie in it! My favorites:

-Dance Like This
-Satellite (both versions)

But it is hard to pick favorites, because all the songs are good. If you found yourself wanting to get up and dance when you heard the music in this movie - DEFINITELY buy the soundtrack. It'll be a great addition to any collection.

Havana Sunset is a collection of 11 previously released tracks (60 minutes' worth) selected from the German-born guitarist's four Higher Octave recordings: Saffron & Silk, Mosaico, Andalusian Nights, and Seventh Heaven. As one would expect, it's an easy-on-the-ear showcase for Govi's unerringly pleasant flamenco stylings--warm, graceful, and sanguine. Govi clearly does not create music for flamenco purists; instead, he targets listeners who enjoy the gentler side of flamenco's cheery colors, and he obliges by creating smooth, catchy, midtempo selections that are imbued with refined playing and a nonblistering pace. It is what it is: Nice, undisruptive background music well-suited for a patio party ("Persuasion" sets a particularly attractive mood) or a top-down cruise along an oceanfront highway. Put Govi in approximately the same league as Johannes Linstead (though Linstead's melodies and arrangements can be more complex) or Oscar Lopez (a skilled player who often favors a more spirited flamenco sound). --Terry Wood

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2007-07-26

I bought this CD after hearing Govi on Siruis radio. His music is great! There isn't any track on this CD that I don't like! I would highly recommend this CD to anyone who loves guitar music! Govi does it better than anyone! A truly great musician!

5 out of 5 stars Love Govi & Glad To Have Found Mehdi .......2006-04-01

I've always enjoyed Govi and this album is no exception, but while reading some of the customer recommendations posted on this site I discovered a group by the name of Mehdi (pronounced meddie). After an online search I found their site (SoothingMusic - Com) and listened to the samples...
I was instantly blown away by the quality of this music and so I gave it a try and now that I have listened to these CDs several times I really must say that although I'm still a fan of this music I also find Mehdi to be a great addition to this CD. I have them both in my multi-disc CD player and love the way they compliment each other. I highly recommend that you give this artist a try or atleast just go listen to the samples, I have a feeling you'll be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful listening experience.......2006-02-05

I initially heard this cd in a clothing store & immediately asked what it was. Great background music for a dinner party or gathering. I've enjoyed it during yoga practice & find each track a treat for the ears. Enjoy - you won't be disappointed.

      Album Description

Songs of THE BEATLES…with a Cuban TWIST.

Here Comes…el Son merges the spirit of The Beatles with the soul of Cuban music. It offers Beatles fans a rare bifocal musical experience: familiar Fab Four tunes rendered in grassroots Afro-Cuban rhythms. This musically rich CD also presents the music enthusiast with an exotic compilation of songs of the most famous Rock 'n Roll group in the world in styles never heard before.

      HISTORICAL FACTS
Banned in Cuba during the early years of the revolution, Beatles music managed to break through and establish a following that endures to this day in Cuba. HCES emerges from that following as the FIRST record of Beatles songs played in traditional Cuban musical rhythms. It is also the FIRST record performed in English by Cuban musicians residing in Cuba.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars More substance than not.......2005-04-21

I was surprised by this album overall, as there were new takes on classics. Some do fall a little flat for my taste. But the simple act of recording it and paying homage to the brits was revolutionary if you believe the history behind this. Some cuts are a bit abrupt, as the syncopation and melodics seem to work against each other in a frenzy of forced rhythm that is neither here nor there. But when they get it all together it's magical. A good effort, original... with the heart in the right place and the harmonies do it justice. Only a couple may trascend the original. I'll never think of hello, goodbye the same way again. And here comes the sun glows with the light of a caribbean sunset, with the strumming of the "tres". While And I love her gains a wistful sweetness.

      5 out of 5 stars Magnificent.......2004-08-23

Very warm, thoughtful and enjoyable. A gem. Has a "sad" longing sound, the players must really want to be in Havana -without Castro- to have inadvertely influx that sadness in their adaptation's dna.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for Latin Music Lovers!!!.......2004-03-04

As a musician and a Lover of the Beatles and Latin Music, This
CD adds style and Flavor to several popular Beatle songs.
From the upbeat Afro drums of "Hey Jude", to the romantic blend of percussion in "And I Love Her" to the a capella rendition
      of "Because" {all sung with a really nice Spanish accent}

The Beatles captured the sound of a generation, this CD caputers
the soul of that sound through diverse Latin arrangements.

This is truly a valuble part of my muisc collection.

      5 out of 5 stars Simply excellent........2004-02-17

Although making versions of already famous songs guarantees success, these musicians have paid due respect to them by accompanying the lyrics with beautiful arrangements. You'll be delighted.

      2 out of 5 stars Cuban Cheese.......2003-05-14

I'm usually a fan of "tribute" CD's, unfortunately I found this one to be a disappointment. A few of the selections have interesting rhythmic and acappella arangements, "Because" and "Hello Goodbye". But most of it just comes accross as rather cheesy. It sort of sounds like a Carribean cruise ship band recorded this. It could use a little more edge. Where's Ry Cooder when you need him?

5 out of 5 stars Havana Cafe - A Great Place To Hang Out.......2004-06-26

"Havana Cafe" was my introduction to Paquito D'Rivera's music in a small band setting. On this set D'Rivera plays alto and soprano sax, plus clarinet backed up by piano, guitar, bass, drums and percussion. The title track by musical director Danilo Perez opens the recording with a funky riff from the low end of the piano before breaking into a bright and upbeat melody; D'Rivera's alto sax solo is appropriately buoyant throughout. Guitarist Ed Cherry contributes "Jean Pauline", a smoothly grooving cha cha, and guitarist Fareed Haque brings his own "The Search", an exploratory piece of music. Two short tracks show off D'Rivera's considerable compositional skills: "Improvalsation", a duet for acoustic guitar and clarinet, and "Contradanza", a solo clarinet piece. These two works blur the lines between jazz, Latin and chamber music so effectively that trying to classify the them into any genre is futile. The highlight of "Havana Cafe" is the track "Who's Smoking?" a quick-paced bop number written by D'Rivera and featuring some excellent soloing from Ed Cherry. Although "Who's Smoking?" is dedicated to James Moody, D'Rivera is the one doing the smoking - his alto work on this track is, well, smoking. This is a killer set.

5 out of 5 stars Great Latin Jazz Ensamble.......1999-06-04

This is my favorate D'Rivera CD -- so far. The combo is one of the best he has led. The musicianship is outstanding, and great tunes. Paquito is never "far out" but instead very accessible.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting.......2007-06-04

I bought this CD several years ago even before it went on market in U.S., aftering finding out that she has a new CD coming out on her website. I was so excited that I ordered this CD from amazon.uk, paid twice the money too, as it was being released there several months before it was to go on sale in U.S.

However, after I listened to this CD, I was hugely dissapointed. While it has a great production value, orchestration, and showcases Vanessa-Mae's violin skills, I found most of the compositions to be nothing spectacular... and frankly, tedious... This failed introduction into Vanessa-Mae's work actually prevented me from trying out her other CDs for the past several years until now. For newcomers to Vanessa-Mae, I find her "The Violin Player" and "Best of Vanessa-Mae" to be immensly more superior CDs than this one.

      5 out of 5 stars If a Virtuoso.......2006-11-13

I absolutely without thought purchase all of Vanessa Mae's CDs'. The best aspect of her genius is her creativity and passion - you hear it in every note! She is without a doubt a first-class violinist who shoves traditional boundaries aside and absolutely roars like a muse - unrivaled.

3 out of 5 stars Technically superb but the melody is not exciting..........2006-08-16

Vanessa Mae is an amazing violinist. Her notes literally dance and you can hear the spirit in the music. But I did not enjoy the music chosen on this CD. The tunes are not exciting.

GREAT MUSIC AND I LOVE THE SABER DANCE.

5 out of 5 stars the best Vanessa Mae CD yet........2005-08-28

Definitely liked it. She's always been a great violinist. the improvement is in the background composition. the score with music by Vangelis is awesome and the rest of the tracks are amazing.

      5 out of 5 stars Top-notch soundtrack!.......2005-06-17

Dave Grusin confirms once more the arsenal of his creative powers when composed this unusual soundtrack with a little help from his friends: Ritenour, Valentin Sandoval, Acuña and a lot of talented musicians who were extremely inspired.
      Fabulous Latin mood.
Above the average all the way: You won't believe it.

      5 out of 5 stars A beautiful score from a real pro..........2004-12-17

Havana may have been a mediocre movie, but the score by Dave Grusin is lovely and under-appreciated. Dave is one of the finest film music composers, having contributed to, among others, "Three Days Of The Condor", "Tootsie", "The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter", "The Graduate", "The Firm", "The Cure", and "Random Hearts", all scores worth listening to. He won a Grammy for "The Fabulous Baker Boys", and an Oscar for "The Milagro Beanfield War".

Dave is at his lyrical best here, with a gorgeous main theme that has amazing motivic development. Film composers are notoriously rushed into completing their music - it's at the end of production and everyone wants the film out. The word on this score is that Sydney Pollack, out of respect for Dave, gave him a more reasonable amount of time to complete this beautiful work. Another reviewer in these pages has noted some similarities in thematic material from cue to cue, but this is not a flaw in Grusin's composing, but is the nature of film music. One introduces a theme and then varies and re-uses it throughout the film - it helps to conjure up feelings of nostalgia and provides effective emotional subtext. It's best to listen to film music compilations like a musician would - with close attention to the subtle variations on a few themes. I notice a little Michel Legrand influence here and there.

An absolutely magnificent piece of scoring from one of the industry's best...

3 out of 5 stars Better Than The Movie!.......2004-05-10

"Havana," the Robert Redford/Lena Olin film is a yet another forgettable, nearly character for character remake of the classic film "Casablanca." How many of those do we need?

However, the soundtrack is pretty flavorful! Dave Grusin, who knows a thing or two about writing for the screen (from television - "St. Elsewhere," to the film scores for "The Fabulous Baker Boys" to "Selena" among a large canon of work), takes us on a journey to Cuba and the trip is an auditory treat.

This disc should probably have been labled as a "Motion Picture Score" rather than a "soundtrack," since there are none of the hit songs from the film available here. But that's ok. The Main Title theme is brilliant at setting the tone, all percussion, spanish guitars, flutes and a lone trumpet.

The problem here is that there is a theme that gets used in several tracks, notably "Night Walk," "Cuba Libre," "Love Theme" and "Hurricane Country," which each have a variation on this theme. That's a full third of the disc that's practically the same song with slight changes. Though it is a lovely piece of music, it would have been nice to have more variety from the disc.

Still, it winds up being better than the film itself! Borderline recommendation.

3 out of 5 stars Good Grusin music for Pollack film.......2001-01-05

This soundtrack to the 1990 Sydney Pollack film features a good selection of Latin jazz and romantic music that follows the plot of this film, a romantic drama set in late 1950's Cuba.

5 out of 5 stars Carlos Santana- Havana Moon.......2006-11-11

Excellent!!!, not to soft, not to loud, Carlos had equal parts of his smoother guitar work and the perfect combination of songs. It's the classic rock songs( "Watch your step";"Lightning"; "Who Do You Love" and of course, Chuck Berry's "Havana Moon",And Carlos has a way of sending you off to another place("Mudbone";"Ecuador"; " Tales of Kilimanjaro";"Vereda Tropical" with his Guitar work. There are only two songs done in the typical Santana(the group)Mexican folk feel that doesn't stay in form with the rest of the album "Daughter of the Night"; and "They All Went To Mexico" that just don't do anything for me( not that they are'nt fine songs)...

4 out of 5 stars Over looked and under rated, but not for why you'd think.......2005-11-09

Unable to give this 3 1/2 stars, I lean towards 4. Those who rate this CD low miss the point. They're either unable to seperate Carlos' from his harder edged guitar laced rock music of old, or are "Supernatural" saturated comtemporaries who expect some current flash in the pan "star" to be present on any Santana music of value. Or, they simply didn't notice the title of this CD. I mean to say the song, "Vereda Tropical," is the worst song on the CD because it sounds like a marriacci night club band...um.. eh hem... THE CD IS NAMED "HAVANA MOON!!!" If anything this song is the most definitive- the perfect backdrop to the picturesque Havana Moon setting atop the water at night that graces the cover of the CD. Not to belabor the point, but this is a cover of a classic, old mexican ballad of a broken hearted man singing of his sorrow that only Santana could do as magnificently as he does on this CD. I guess remakes have to be of songs (or even movies come to think of it) that are not even old enough to be redone yet, or of songs so fresh on the minds of contemporary listeners that they even garner a listen. I chuckle at some of the more recent reviews of this album that seem to reak of desperation for the type of "Supernatural" commercialism that only comtemporaries or philistines would expect, indeed, demand of Santana music. Carlos does seem a little indecisive in that choosing, with the first half of the CD leaning in that direction, but coming off somewhat uninspired. "Lightnin" and "One With You," stick out more than the others in a positive light, though "Watch Your Step,' seems to be the type of song Carlos would put out to cater to those who want Santana songs with radio play appeal, with not so defining results (Actualy, the breadth of the music on this CD did put several of these songs on the radio, just not one particular type of station.) But that's where the latter half of this CD picks up the slack. Starting with "Ecquador," Carlos gives us tunes that tilt towards the theme that the title of the CD implies. True, Willie Nelson's accompaniment on "They All Went To Mexico," adds a little country flavor. But the blend of his voice and Carlos guitar gives Santana one of the CD's best songs, if not in his reportoirre. It's a magical blend with a can't sit still tempo that would have even the most reticent up and dancing were it played at a Jimmy Buffett concert, to offer merely an idea of the song's flavor. In between, "Tales of Kilimanjaro, Havana Moon," and "Daughter of the Night" string together one of the best runs of Santana music on any of his CDs, all offering an angle of Santana flavor that his eclectic taste buds have served over the years. If you want "Black Magic Woman" type Santana, buy "Abraxas," or a greatest hits collection. If you want a duet with Michelle Branche, you know where to go. But if you have any musical depth, insight, vision and appreciation for more than just commercial appeal, you might find this CD to be an undiscovered jewel, albeit not without some shortcomings. A number of well entrenched artists have assumed some license in their musical choices. Does one judge Brian Setzer's swing music based on his rockabilly background? Van Morrison's Irish flavored music based on hits like "Brown Eyed Girl? Well, guess what... Carlos is Mexican! Imagine, including a song like "Vereda Tropical" on one of his CDs. The nerve!

3 out of 5 stars Not his best - but pivotal........2005-10-13

This is not by any means the most loved of Santana's many albums and that is exactly why it matters. It is not even available here on amazon.co.uk but luckily I, like several other reviewers, have a trusty vinyl copy to fall back on. After fifteen or so years of "traditional" Santana (and I have most, if not all, of those on vinyl too) it marked the point when he branched out in to collaborations. Maybe this didn't work out or was not commercially successful at first (your choice) but by 'Supernatural' in 1999 the boot was on the other foot. I believe a new Santana album, including a diversity of co-conspirators, is due early in 2006.

I like Havana Moon, for all its indubitable discontinuities of style, but to give it more than three stars would leave me with problems rating many of his other albums. If for no other reason you should listen to this just once to see where it fits in and, who knows, you might just like it!

      5 out of 5 stars I Think It's Great.......2004-07-30

Gosh, I bought this when it came out as a vinyl LP--which should tell you how long I've been a Santana fan. I've always thought this was a terrific set of music. Granted, it took me awhile to get used to Lightnin' but all of the other tracks are just first rate. I had Ecuador playing in my head when I visited that country--and Willie Nelson's They All Went To Mexico is just such a fun song that I've never grown tired of listening to it. The final track, Vereda Tropical, is simply beautiful, as is the story behind it. All in all, this is one of my very favorite CDs and think it deserves higher than three stars!

4 out of 5 stars Variety Of Styles,But Still Well Done.......2004-02-06

      This Carlos Santana solo album from 1983 has about 9 songs I really like and 2 songs that I hate. There are several guests singers on this cd,but not as many as the 'SuperNatural' or 'Shaman' cds. This cd has a good variety of rock styles,but still sounds good to me. Here's a breakdown of the tracks;
WATCH YOUR STEP- a rockin' remake of a classic song with Greg Walker on vocals. This was a minor hit on album rock stations in 1983.
LIGHTNIN- an instrumental rock/blues tune which is tribute to Lightnin' Hopkins. Well done with good guitar work.
WHO DO YOU LOVE- Carlos rocks with the Fabulous Thunderbirds on the rockabilly remake of a Bo Diddley classic tune.
MUDBONE- A classic Santana sound instrumental that's pretty cool and smooth and heavy on the percussion. This is a tribute to John Lee Hooker with Jimmie Vaughn and Carlos Santana on guitars.
ONE WITH YOU- an excellent slow rock ballad with vocals a good 3 part guitar solo between Carlos and Jimmie Vaughn. One of my favorite songs on the cd.
EQUADOR- very weak short song that is mainly percussion and tribal chants.
TALES OF KILAMANJARO- this song is also on the Santana ZEBOP cd from 1981 which is a classic Santana style instrumental.
HAVANA MOON- A good rockin tune with good vocals and smooth rythyms. This is a remake of a Chuck Berry song.
DAUGHTER OF THE NIGHT- classic vintage rockin' Santana here with Greg Walker on vocals and great guitar solos and rythym.
THEY ALL WENT TO MEXICO- a good mellow southwestern Mexican style song with Willie Nelson on lead vocals.
VEREDA TROPICAL- Worst song on the album. Sounds like a Marriacci band night club lounge song.
