A real encyclopedia of samba.......2000-11-28

One of the many wonderful qualities of Paulinho da Viola's music is his archaeological desire to ensure that the great sambas of the past fifty years are not forgotten. Moreover, Paulinho's interpretations of classic sambas are often more elegant, better sung, better presented than the originals. It's as if he is able to dig into the composer's mind and perform a samba as it was originally conceived, with the benefit of his elegant voice and just-right arrangements. Each Paulinho performance on this live album is a small polished gem; each speaks for itself, each is thoughtful, each says something about the music and about samba in general.

The lack of egotism in the presentation of other composers' works is also evident in Paulinho's presentation of his own compositions.

In general, this album is a tribute to samba past and present. If you're expecting Carnaval in Rio, think again. This is 'chamber samba'. It is filled with musicality, with characteristic formality and polish, and with respect for the music, while it maintains the informality which makes great music great.

The CD is a live performance from the show "O Grande Encontro", an out-standing success all over Brazil. Initially they hadn't planned to make the CD, but the show became such a big hit that the public didn't give them options! More than partners, Alceu Valença, Elba Ramalho, Ze Ramalho and Ze Geraldo are friends and their voices match perfectly in every song! It's pure tropical delight, with music based on famous Brazilian rhythms such as "forro", "xaxado", ballads and folkloric songs. The CD is so good that wouldn't be fair to point out the best songs. Is a "must listen" even if you don't understand portuguese. I highly recommend!

Classic Bossa, rejuvenated.......2001-07-15

One of the marvels of Brazilian song is that it can be covered and rearranged endless times and it still sounds as fresh and lovely as it did when João and Astrud Gilberto performed it for the first time. The most unique thing about Brazilian music is the mastery of romantic poetry, the true theme of the nation. Vinicius sought to understand, articulate, and celebrate the joys and aches of love; the declarations in Portuguese are unmatched by any other language. In this CD the great legends of Bossa Nova pay tribute to Vinicius "poetinha vagabundo" De Moraes, and all his collaborations with the cream of Brazilian folk. Especially rewarding are the wonderful guitar solos by the late Baden Powell. Miucha's voice never ceases to be sensual, carrying the perfect intonation for that unique Brazilian sentimen, "saudade" (longing), as do Toquinho's lamentations on the guitar. The artists end the album with a speacial "blessing samba" where they honour the immortal Antonio Carlos Jobim, Vinucius' most celebrated partner. I have listened to this album everyday and am not about to stop soon.

If you like to feel you're in a concert without leaving your home, you'll enjoy this CD. The two first tracks are previously unreleased musics, both of them fantastic. After that, the greatest hits of the group, recorded in a concert. Very good!

I have listened this album with great pleasure. It contain the musics selected from 10 years together from this Brazilian duet.This album has at least 10 years old, meaning that the duet has mora than 20 years together by now (05/99). They started as a trio. Sá, Rodrix & Guarabyra. Just Sá & Guarabyra remain together. They are famous for their "coyntry rock". Their songs speaks about the countryside, in a sense you could feel "the taste of the rain" heating the dirty ground. Listen to "a 1ª. canção da estrada". "Sobradinho" it is a famous hit from the beginning of their career. They also have wondeful balads like "Dona". All together this album is a sure a good listening to those who love the Brazilian Popular Music.

This double CD of Maria Bethania's most recent (I believe) live performance is a remarkable collection, and one that essentially traces the whole of her career, from "Carcara," her first big hit, to songs from her newest studio recording A FORCA QUE NUNCA SECA. It's brilliantly organized: the first part is composed of songs about life and nature, including some wonderful traditional tunes by Dorival Caymmi. The second section focuses on romance and love: the best here are Caetano Veloso's and Waly Salomao's "Mel"--which earned Bethania the nickname Abelha Rainha or Queen Bee--and Chico Buarque's marvelously feminist "Olhos no Olhos." The third group covers politically oriented compositions, and if you don't speak Portuguese try to get someone to translate the words of the Gilberto Gil/Torquato Neto anthem "Marginalia II." It's incredible. The final song is a very interesting selection from Chico's repertoire, the not-very-often performed but great "Na Carreira." While a very, very few of the tunes are less than stellar ("E o amor," anyone?") the selection is generally fabulous and Bethania's beautiful interpretations and silky caressing voice never disappoint.

new versions for old gems.......2000-03-18

You will find here refined versions of those old songs that contributed to Bethania's present position in the MPB. She is singing better than ever, without loosing expressiveness ( " Olhos nos olhos ")or sweetness ( "Morena do mar" ), now defiant ( "Marginália II" ), now melancholic ( " Maninha"). Like superb wines, lots of subtle pleasures to be discovered.

This the new album of the best brazillian singer. You can find new songs like "A força que nunca seca" and "É o amor, such as old ones like "Carcára" (first hit of Bethânia in 1965) and Chico Buarque's "Roda Viva". This is alive recording, but the producer cuts off the claps after the songs.
