Chants of the Islands

Editorial Reviews

About the Artist
Palani studied under Kumu hula Frank Palani Kahala, from whom he received the blessing to teach hula, and the name for his halau, which means, the eyes of heaven with peace. Instructing his students to perform in the very same way he was taught, Palani believes he is fulfilling his calling as kumu; honoring those who have gone before him while passing on his knowledge to the next generation. Namakalaniakamaluhia has performed at various hula festivals throughout the islands since 1996, garnering awards for Kahiko and Auana.

Product Description
Chants of the Islands is a combination of well known traditional chants taught by all Halau Hula as well as original chants by Palani Kahala. Chants of the Islands is a must for lovers of chant and students of hula.

Wonderfull CD! I would like to see more of this kind of music at the stores! Is one of the best album I've bought in my life!
It's rare, it's beautifull, it's a very special kind of music.

4 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2006-03-17

Its very good music. The only thing its missing is a lyric sheet or english translations.

5 out of 5 stars Practical Information.......2005-09-07

This recording has already been reviewed with regard to quality, so I thought I'd skip what we all know (that this music is fantastic) and give a few more practical bits of info.
First of all, if you have the DVD of The Thin Red Line, the chants that come in the extras are all present on this disc. If that's all you want and you can put up with having to use your DVD player to listen, then there's no real reason to buy this album. However, the album contains twice as much material, all of it just as good. Don't think that if you buy this album you won't be getting your money's worth, even if you already have the DVD.
Secondly, the sound quality of the recording is for the most part excellent, especially when one considers that the whole album was recorded "on location" so to speak. That said, there are a few moments where the high end seems to get lost somewhere, and the occasional cough or ambient noise. If this bothers you, then be warned. It really shouldn't.
Thirdly, in response to another review, the language they are speaking (although sometimes they speak English and the accent makes it hard to tell) is Tok Pisin, or Melanesian Pigin. I won't bore you with the details, but the short version is that Tok Pisin is actually a full-fledged language, not just a pigin, dialects of which are spoken throughout the area. A minor bit of trivia: "Jisas, masta mi save" doesn't have anything to do with being saved; "save" (pronounced "sah-vay") means "to know," from whence comes "savvy" as in Pirates of the Caribbean.
Lastly, some reviews might give one the impression that this album has an overwhelming religious presence, or that it is "Christian," or some such. I won't lie; I would say 75% of the songs have the word Jesus or God somewhere in them. All I can tell you is to find some way to listen to some of them and see for yourself whether or not one has to be religious in order to appreciate the music. I would say no, others might disagree.

Stunning... listening to this music is like looking at stained glass with your ears.

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking and Simply Spectacular!!!.......2003-05-13

I don't think it would honestly pay this CD justice, to simply write a few words about it. It must be heard!!

There is some of the most beautiful choir songs ever on this CD. Those children are truly gifted, and God bless them all!

Album Description

In the eastern Polynesian islands known as Hawaii, the making of music and dance is center on mele or chanted texts. Mele, sung alone, are said to be performed in the oli style (without dance or musical instruments). When coupled with hula (dance), they are called mele hula, and when the pahu drum is added the performance is called mele hula pahu. More specific terms are also applied to mele that are used for specific purposes such as processionals, prayers, and naming.

The practice of perpetuating tradition through the teacher-student relationship is strong in Hawaiian mele. Performers' styles are recognized, back through time, in their teacher's, and their teachers' teacher's styles. These recordings give a view of several performance styles of Hawaiian mele between 1923 and 1989, although the traditions and the mele reach much further back in time

5 out of 5 stars Healing Music from Polynesia.......2002-11-13

Hawaiian Drum Dance Chants: Sounds of Power in Time is an excellent CD. These vintage recordings are true Hawaiian Hula Pahu songs, performed by some of the last few people familar with traditional Hawaiian culture. As the introductory notes say, this is music with a cultural and religious significance and deserves to be treated as such. Now that that has been stated, the music itself is well worth listening to. It is sung in Hawaiian, complete with linear notes, in both Hawaiian and English. I found the translations to be quite enjoyable, especially as they are presented in metric form. Unlike most other non-western forms of music, Hawaiian music isn't that unfamilar to western ears. Even if you don't speak Hawaiian, you probably can appreciate this deeply moving collection of music. The first six tracks are actually more "contemporary" Hula Pahu songs. Of them, Mele Pule, Mele Kahea and Hanohano ka uka o Pihanakalani are perhaps the most enjoyable. From then on, we are given traditional and historical recordings from the Bishop museum. These are some of the best parts of the CD. Astute ears will notice some key differences between these and previous tracks. Nonetheless, it remains quite enjoyable. Even though the quality of some of these tracks is a little scratchy, it is still an excellent CD.

4 out of 5 stars A scholarly look at Polynesian folk music.......2002-11-13

The sparse sounds of "hula pahu," the plaintive sounds of Hawaiian hula songs. This is a pretty hardcore folkloric collection, with minimal drumming and bare-bones vocals. It's certainly not for most casual listeners, but invaluable for anyone seeking to make a serious investigation into the roots of Hawaiian music.

4 out of 5 stars Haunting, Powerful.......2000-09-18

I found this music, despite it's fairly simple format (almost entirely voice and simple drumming) nonetheless weaves a dense fabric. It is at times haunting, often powerful, and worth repeated listenings.

The 126 a cappella voices heard on this 1991 field recording are not actually from Tahiti but from the island of Rapa (a.k.a. Oparo), a thousand miles southeast from Tahiti, the last outcropping of land in the South Pacific before Antarctica. The island's very isolation has allowed it to preserve a unique choral tradition based on quarter-tone harmonies, three-against-two rhythms, tenor-against-alto counterpoint, soprano trilling and bass-voice drones, and percussive exhalations. All 15 selections on this album date back to the days before the island's first encounter with Europeans in 1791 and have a distinctly non-Western character. The music's eerie strangeness is combined with an unmistakable beauty that made this album a surprise hit on the worldbeat charts. --Geoffrey Himes

    4 out of 5 stars Angelic islanders.......2004-09-18

Heard about it on NPR with interview of person who did original recording. Great representative of South Pacific choral music with unusual twist (you might think its a bad place in the CD) which is derived from the tribal religion.

5 out of 5 stars Other worldly and joyful.......2001-05-23

The reviewer above gives you the technical reasons for the other worldly feel to this album. What is missed is the sheer sense of joy of singing that this album conveys. I think it is that quality which makes this album so successful.

I would like to comment on the statement that all of the songs are pre-contact with Europeans. #3-Himeme Tatou is the hymn "Once I was bound by sin's galling fetters..." copywrited in 1917 and renewed in 1945 by the Nazarene Publishing House. I also believe #13 is another hymn but I can't quite place it. Maybe someone else can.

I highly recomment this album to anyone who would like to hear something different and joyful.

    4 out of 5 stars Great songs...but seem a little over-engineered.......2006-05-25

I had been listening to "Rapa Iti Volume 2" for years, and I bought this disc after listening to several interviews with the man who made the recordings, Pascal Nabet-Meyer. I love the music of the Rapa people and their story is fascinating. Listening to these songs gives you a sense of reaching back to something ancient in human history.

My only complaint with this disc is that it seems over-engineered. I'm no expert, but it sounds too polished, as though someone added too much reverb, and it loses some of the raw energy of the rougher-sounding recordings on "Rapa Iti Volume 2." This disc is worth having, but I would encourage listeners to also try "Rapa Iti Volume 2."

5 out of 5 stars Unique and excellent.......2005-02-02

I heard this years ago, and was simply awestruck by it. The music is very difficult to describe. But it's very moving.

    Well worth picking up.

5 out of 5 stars Experience the Sounds that Enchanted Melville & Jack London.......2001-08-18

As a reader of travel books from another era, I have finally found a CD of the exotic Marquesas Islands, the setting of Herman Melville's book, Typee, and a stopover sight of Jack London's voyage aboard the Snark in 1907. The Marquesan chants on this CD are my first encounter with the wonderful sounds of the language and music of this South Pacific island culture. If you want to dream away the hours on a snowy winter day, wishing for a paradise in the tropics, this CD will help transport you there. If you are looking for modern French Polynesian music, this is not the CD for you, but if you want to experience a simple Marquesan parish choir whose members sing with all their hearts and with spontaneity, you will cherish the simple beauty of these hymns. This is not a CD intended to bring in the tourist trade, but simply to share the joy of Sunday, the Marquesan feast day.
