5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD!.......2007-06-04

We are exposing my 2 1/2 year old son to Spanish (immersion style) and this music CD is wonderful. The recordings are clear, the music is well orchestrated, up-beat and fun, and we can even understand the singers...a hard-to-find combination! He even enjoys dancing along.

Bellísimo. I love this CD. It is my favorite children's CD and my kids complain about me playing it all the time. The music is catchy and contemporary, the singing is great, and the songs are all the ones I grew up with. This CD makes a great gift for Spanish speakers, and for those who want to learn Spanish.

5 out of 5 stars Excelente!!!.......2003-04-05

This CD is a must have for all hispanic households and also for those that are interested in hispanic children's song. These songs are not originals, but the musical styles which are used for each one makes this superb. Buen Trabajo, Disney!!!

5 out of 5 stars A glorious heritage, well sounded.......2005-10-05

This music has a distinctive Spanish flavour to it - the guitar introduction on the first track is unmistakably Spanish; this is a tradition that dates back to the time before Columbus discovered the 'new' world, which ironically was the same year Ferdinand and Isabella issued their edict of expulsion to the Jews in Spain. The Sephardic Jews took their musical traditions with them when they left, such that the Spanish influences in their culture permeated the Jewish communities in other parts of Europe.

There are all sorts of music on this disc, that covers the whole range of pieces from the Sephardic culture - there are love songs, lullabies, and storytelling songs. Women feature prominently in the stories, and most likely in the composition, of many of the pieces here. Many pieces, however, have come down to the present time without composer/author credits. These could be the songs of many Mediterranean cultures; that they are Jewish is indicated in some of the details of the lyrics rather than the style of music itself. References to Hebrew Scriptures in certain ways, and certain Jewish customs and officials (such as the Moel, the one who performs circumcision) indicate the kinds of details present here.

La Rondinella makes use of wind and string instruments, most likely the same kinds of instruments used by the folk singers who would have been the original performers. Included here as performers are Paul Bensel (recorder, crumhorn, percussion), Howard Bass (lute, guitar, harp, percussion), Rosalind Brooks Stowe (treble viol, vielle, percussion), and Tina Chancey as a guest artist (treble viol, vielle, rebec, kamenj, recorder, percussion), with the alto vocals of Alice Kosloski. La Rondinella was established in 1987 in Washington D.C. as a group dedicated to older styles of music such as Sephardic, English, Scottish and Italian music.

The performances here are simply stunning, and remarkable in the fullness of sound and one with so few players. The care and spirit infused into the performances is wonderful. The emotion is very strongly present, particularly in pieces that give a sense of longing and wandering, a very well-known feeling among the Sephardim.

5 out of 5 stars a Hispanophile and Judeophile.......2005-08-24

This is a great album. The pieces are both instrumental and sung, with a range of themes. There are both lively and slow pieces on this album. The voices are clear, the harmonies are lovely, and with the lyrics, the words are fairly easy to follow and understand. If you already speak Spanish, you will find it easier to understand the medieval Castilian and so that knowledge provides a way in, but if you just like music and are interested in Jewish traditions, that offers an alternative route into the music.

5 out of 5 stars hauntingly beautiful simplicity.......2000-02-05

A jewel of a recording. Alice Koslozski teamed up with La Rondinella for several more recordings of Sephardic and Spanish Renaissance songs, but this one, the first, is the very best: they are all technically excellent, but this CD has the best song selection.

La Rondinella produces great earthy and colorful Medieval timbres. Kozloski's mezzo singing is lyrical and moving, some where on the spectrum between lieder singer and folk singer.

The songs have a hauntingly beautiful simplicity - they are a relevant today as they were 600 years ago. The booklet contains all the Ladino texts - if you know a little Spanish, they are quite understandable.

5 out of 5 stars A Fabulous collection!.......1999-04-03

This is a collection of songs that covers the broad spectrum of love, loss, hopes, and dreams. This music truly is expressed from the heart. It is interpreted by an excellent group of musicians who attempt successfully, I believe, to express the emotions and music of this particular era. This is a must-buy for anyone who is a serious collector.

Amazon.com essential recording

At this point in Celia Cruz's 40-plus year career--over 20 Gold albums; collaborations with salsa greats Johnny Pacheco, Willie Colon, Tito Puente, and the Fania All-Stars; and countless awards--you would expect the Queen of Afro-Cuban music to run out of ideas and song titles, let alone steam! Yet, this indefatigable grandma, who counts among her living legend peers American jazz orishas Aretha and Sarah, remains an inexhaustible fount of some of the most luscious sounds to rock this planet. Cruz's party verve still rages feverishly high, that butter-scotch voice is as rich and emotive as ever, and she still rides those vocals just as smoothly over this set's sizzling Latin jams, produced by the excellent Ralph Mercado and played by a stellar crew of salsa-meisters. The title of evergreen Cruz's latest jolt of pure central nervous system stimulation says it all: In English, it means, "My Life Is To Sing." --Elena Oumano

5 out of 5 stars A tribute to our dear Celia Cruz.......2003-07-22

This is another tremendous album by the late Celia Cruz- la guarachera del mundo. As usual this album is nothing but excellence and a true representation of Celia's spririt and philosophy about life- la vida es un carnaval y hay que vivirla cantando. Her tremendous talent, charisma, professionalism and vivacious nature kept the world dancing for fifty years and will keep the world dancing for fifty more years thanks to this tremendous album (and all the others). The international hit on this album is "la vida es un carnaval" but all are tremendous and once again Celia shows her diversity by including other rhythms- a merengue (a duet with Kinito Mendez) and a bolero that is just so sentimental and so Celia Cruz. This album is her first production with Sony discos and I assure you the new style, sound and energy are just so typical of "la guarachera". I can't express this anymore clearly. This is a production that is platinum and will defintely keep Celia in our hearts for ever. I cheerish her music and will keep dancing in the name of this tremendous singer of tropical music. Celia is truly a "reina".

5 out of 5 stars A must to have.......2000-07-21

It is definetly one of the best albums I ever herd. Not that this comes with a suprice. She definetly deserves her title. Even if you are not a salsa fan it is that kind of music everybody can enjoy. I recently seen her and Jose Alberto in a concert and hearing La vida es un carneval live was something I will never forget. ASUCAR....

Celia Cruz is like a diva of the latin salsa, and holds true to it in this phenomenal release "Mi vida es cantar". Its too bad that "La vida es un carnaval" doesen't have a sound sampler (its one of the best songs) but that goes to show you that the entire cd is great.

5 out of 5 stars A Gem - Dont Let the Low Price Fool You!.......2007-02-13

This CD is proof that price has no correlation with quality when it comes to music CDs. This CD is full of short guitar pieces by masters such as Villa-Lobos, etc, and every song is beautiful and well crafted. None of the music featured on this CD is cheap - it is top quality latin classical guitar music. Another reason to get this CD is that many of the songs featured on this CD are rare and not easy to find. Lastly, the sound quality is surprisingly good and most audiophiles won't be disappointed.

Currently on amazon, this CD is going for 99 cents used. Spend a buck and get one of the best CDs of your guitar music collection.

5 out of 5 stars How do you say Fun in Spanish?.......2007-01-04

As a native Spanish speaker who speaks mainly English at home, I was thrilled to find this CD (and the other 2 like it). First of all you can't beat the price. Plus, this CD is full of fun, catchy songs that my 5 month old seems to really enjoy. In all honesty I enjoy them as well! I put the CD on for her while she is playing on her play mat, and between her toys and the music she stays entertained for a long time-- enough for me to shower and do some chores. I often sing the songs to her along with the CD and she laughs (but maybe that is my singing). I hope she picks up some of the Spanish too, since I feel I don't really speak the language to her enough.

The fact that most of the songs seem to be sung by kids was off-putting at first, but I got over that pretty quickly.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoy it very much!.......2006-08-24

The songs actually have rythym! Most children's music is very bland, but this CD actually makes my 7-month old daughter want to dance.I definitely recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME - kids love the music!!.......2005-09-09

Most of the reviews on this CD have been negative because Non-Spanish speaking parents purchased it. For Spanish speakers however - the CD is FANTASTIC!!! I strongly urge any non-spanish speaking parents to ask a friend or a Spanish Teacher to translate the songs. "Itsy-bitsy spider" is one of the songs on this CD - Wouldn't it be nice to teach your son/daughter that world-known song in spanish?? Also several traditional Latin (or Mexican) songs are on this CD - many that I heard during my childhood. My son LOVES the music and fact of the matter is - spanish or english - at 2 yrs old he can only understand so much language anyway. AT the current price of $3.99 - I'm ordering more copies as gifts for friends & family.

5 out of 5 stars great CD.......2004-07-03

This Spanish CD has some of my favorite fun songs from when I was a child visiting my grandmother in Mexico. My five month old son loves to listen to it and it's great for exposing him to a second language.

    Album Description

This is the first of a 2-CD set which illustrates the kind of music sung and played by the women musicians of the courts of Parma and Ferrara in the second half of the sixteenth century. These women were among the first professional women musicians, and they practised their trade at the peril of their reputations. Some of them did not survive their activities - one was murdered by her husband on suspicion of adultery, another was ostracised by the court for appearing too eager to sing. This disc concentrates on the established madrigal repertoire written by Cipriano de Rore and his pupils Giaches de Wert, Luzzasco Luzzaschi and Marc'Antonio Ingegneri.

5 out of 5 stars Better of two collections of songs in Italian........2006-06-15

'The Impatient Lover' sung by Cecilia Bartoli is a collection of 18th and 19th century songs in Italian which were written by the predominantly German composers, Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, and Hayden. Oddly, this is very seriously a better, or at least a more enjoyable collection, to my ear, than the 'If you Love Me' collection of Italian songs written by Italians, including Scarlatti, Caldera, and Vivaldi. And, neither collection of Italian songs is as interesting as Mme. Bartoli's collection of French love songs, 'Chant D'Amore'. All are done on London, but with three different accompaniests. I think the French material is just better than the Italian.

5 out of 5 stars Intimate Italian Recital By Cecilia.......2004-06-09

This disc offers a recital of Italian songs set to music by Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert and Haydn. Beethoven and Schubert may come as a surprise to the listener here in regard to Italian repertoire, but Mozart and Haydn had already set Italian texts to music. Actually Beethoven and Schubert are each featured here with several songs, Mozart is represented by 'Ridente La Calma' and Haydn with the poignant cantata 'Árianna a Naxos'. These songs are mostly set to music on texts by Pietro Metastasio, which deal with such universal themes as love, grief, death and loss.

The four composers and their songs are with Cecilia Bartoli in attentive, careful and tender hands. Her musical integrity clearly shines through on this disc. She is in glorious voice as she took me with her through all the emotions which are distilled here, going from lightness in several of these songs to the fierceness and poignancy of Arianna in Haydn's cantata. Bringing out every shade and nuance for this listener (as these songs also allow her to display the dark depths of her voice). Andras Schiff lends her a sparkling and wonderful support on piano. Singer and musician are very much in harmony here with each other.

The booklet contains information about the composers and their songs and also the texts of the songs with translations in English, French and German . I do not have a particular favourite among the songs of Cecilia's intimate Italian recital. This is all in all an excellent disc.

This really is, as Gramophone says, a satisfying recital. In fact, it is really quite compelling, perfect for evening contemplation. Bartoli's voice sounds great, as always, and this recital demonstrates an advance in her artistry over previous efforts. Schiff plays a Bosendorfer, which sounds a bit like a fortepiano, not at all inappropriate for this repertoire of classical era composers. I enjoy its slightly woody timbre. I guess if I had any criticism, it is of Bartoli's somewhat strenuous, aspirated expression. It would be nice to hear her sing more simply and straightforwardly.

    5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable album . . . . great musicians.......2000-05-10

This album includes a number of rare pieces in the Italian repertoire. Written by standard composers (Haydn, Shubert, Beethoven, and Mozart), they accompany the Italian words of Pietro Metastasio, a prominent poet in the early to mid-1700's. Metastasio's poetry was used until the mid 1840's as lyrics to classical songs. These texts are archetypes of the 'opera seria' libretto in both form and content. So some might find this album peculiar, particularly since you are most likely not used to hearing Italian words with Shubert melodies. Don't be timid! Bartoli's voice is incredible, and free from many of the terrible habits that have characterized her lately (swallowed low notes, breathy pianissimo sound, etc). She sounds rich and expressive, and as always, her interpretive techniques are top-of-the-line. The Mozart "Ridente la calma" will especially warm your heart.

      5 out of 5 stars A magical recording.......2005-08-03

I must confess to having a soft spot for this recording which remains my favorite amongst the series of recordings Gothic voices made with Hyperion some years back. The music here explores the cultural cross fertilization between France and Italy - of course Gothic voices have explored similar exchanges between France and England. Particular beautiful is the harp contribution from Andrew Laurence-King, who has since gone on to direct a whole series of quite wonderful recordings of his own. The anonymous Constantia played on the Medieval harp here is particularly haunting. Another favorite is the song by Jean Haucourt, 'Je demande ma bienvenue'.

The CD contents are as follows:

Andreas de Florentia Astio non mori mai ballata [2'58]
Andreas de Florentia Per la ver'onesta ballata [3'57]
anonymous Quando i oselli canta madrigal [1'56]
      anonymous (Faenza codex) Constantia [2'58]
Johannes de Florentia Quando la stella madrigal [3'10]
anonymous Amor mi fa cantar a la Francesca ballata [3'29]
anonymous (Faenza codex: after Jacopo da Bologna) Non na el so amante [2'35]
Francesco Landini Ochi dolenti mie ballata [2'45]
Francesco Landini Per seguir la speranca ballata [3'30]

French pieces trom the Italian manuscript, Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Canonici misc. 213.

      anonymous O regina seculi/Reparatrix Maria [2'22]
Guiliaume Dufay Quel fronte signorille in paradiso [2'31]
      anonvmous Confort d'amours rondeau [3'43]
Richard Loqueville Qui ne veroit que vos deulx yeulx rondeau [1'08]
Estienne Grossin Va t'ent souspir [1'36]

This was the recording that introduced me to Medieval music. I had always thought that listening to this more would make the exotic musical language commonplace to me, yet after over ten years every time I listen to it the old magical evocation of a lost world remains as vivid as the first time I heard it.

A lovely recording which I recommend wholeheartedly.

5 out of 5 stars A successful turning point to a standard stylish singer.......2003-05-18

This album marks the second turning point in Gal Costa's career since her first album "Domingo" with Caetano Veloso, a Bossa Nova album. After that, she engaged in the "Tropicalia" cultural movement and her singing became agressive.

In this second turning point, Gal Costa returns to tenderness, to more elaborated performances and to lower keys in a clear disposition to gain a place among the great singers, notably beside the remarkable Elis Regina.

She was successful in this album but the comparison to Elis Regina remains an unreachable dream.

She counts on Joao Donato as her arranger in this album and her renditions of his compositions "A Ra" and "Ate Quem Sabe" are killing.

5 out of 5 stars One Great Song Worth the Price of the Album.......2003-03-01

Ate Quem Sabe (roughly "Until Who Knows") is a fabulous song, written by Joao Donato. Gal Costa's version of it is well worth the price of this CD. Her pacing of this slow ballad is superb. If you don't speak Portuguese, find a Brazilian to translate the words. Ate Quem Sabe is a classic that merits recognition as such.
