How can someone so unpredictable behave so predictably? Every time PJ Harvey releases something sophisticated and clean like 2000's Mercury Music Prize tipped Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea, it just about guarantees a contradictory follow-up album is around the bend. Her ambitious 1992 debut, Dry, inspired the bitter death rattle of Rid of Me. Her third offering, 1995's elegant To Bring You My Love, gave way to the stormy Is This Desire?. Harvey's sixth solo album, Uh Huh Her, doesn't disappoint. It's a nasty riposte to the success of its predecessor, built on grubby blues-punk riffs and the brooding, primal howl that Harvey uses when she wants to impersonate a she-wolf. Some of it seems disappointingly remedial ("The Letter," "Cat on the Wall"), but the best material ("The Desperate Kingdom of Love," "Who the Fuck?") just reconfirms that no matter how raw the British songwriter serves it up, the beauty of her work is undeniable. --Aidin VaziriCustomer Reviews:

Longtime fans will not be disappointed. If you are new to PJ's work, this would be a good second purchase. Start with 'To Bring You My Love' or 'Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea.' Either of these is a good place to begin.
Buy this CD.
POLLY IS AN EAR-TEASE!.......2006-11-14
From the pouty frown on the cover to the opening salvo of "Mr. Badmouth", I thought this was going to be another stunner like STORIES FROM THE CITY. Not even close. There are a handful of moments here that smolder like the best of her work but never spark and catch fire. This sounds like it was written & recorded in one day. Not her best day. Everything sounds unfinished. I don't mean raw like DRY or abrasive like RID OF ME. I mean a distinct lack of power. There are a lot of song fragments. "No Child Of Mine" could have been one of the finest PJ HARVEY songs, but at the precise moment where she seems ready to veer it into greatness she chokes it. Stops it dead. It may be an attempt at a middle-finger taunt, but it's not dramatic. Just irritating. The most fleshed out number is "Pocketknife". It's as good as anything she's ever done...and sounds completely out of place here. "The Desperate Kingdom of Love" plays like an out-take from IS THIS DESIRE? It's got a delicate beauty but is recorded at levels that over-emphasize QUIET! I don't need to be beat over the head with silence. I get it. It's not an original idea. F@$# post-modernism. She's fully capable of working "The Darker Days Of Me & Him" into a frothy intoxicating brew. She just didn't do it. Aside from that there are songs on here that are utterly unlistenable.
With UH HUH HER she's giving you scraps. Sure her scraps would be seen as brilliance in lesser artists but she's NOT a lesser artist.
Of course you must own this if you're a fan. You wouldn't want to be without "Pocketknife", "Mr. Badmouth" or even the 68 seconds of "No Child of Mine", but if you are just now coming around to Polly's gifts? You can skip this one.

A Damn Good Collection! .......2006-09-02
This is truly one of the best collections of the early 1980s and the standout collection of 1983. John Mellencamp is a damn good rocker and this collection will not disappoint!
Mellencamp catches his listeners' collective attention with "Crumblin' Down" and has established his rightful place in the ranks of [...] kickin' rockers.
His stellar classic "Pink Houses" is a wonderful unifer and the acoustics are nothing short of outstanding. It is a coast-to-coast and worldwide treat that will leave listeners pleading for more.
The "Authority Song" could be the story of my life. It is a damn good assertive piece that is demanding to be taken seriously. If ever there was a straight from the soul rock hit, this is the one.
"Play Guitar" is a damn good in your face rocking number. It's a poke in the macho eye with some damn good guitar playing and some hard, cutting edge lyrics. I love it!
You have from the heartland the rich rock from the heart of one of the best rockers that ever picked up a guitar. John Mellencamp is an elemental musical force - he is here to stay!
Be sure to get this along with "American Fool," "Scarecrow" and any of Mellencamp's other collections. You will be so glad that you did. Every song is worth it. Be prepared to dance.

Cowboy Mouth is really all things to all people. Their brainy, sweaty mix of novelty songs, delicate psychedelia, glam, classic rock, and roots gets better and better over time. It's rare in a band that has had such a long run to maintain such brash energy and enthusiasm. While the New Orleans-based band hasn't settled down into a single groove or genre, the musicianship has been tightened up as the players tame some of their former manic energy into a more coherent musical statement. "Trouble" sounds like a missing Kiss track and is a damn sight more interesting than what the painted warriors are turning out lately. The muscular guitar licks, rather misogynist sentiments, chugging bass, and bombastic drumming is a throwback to the days when dinosaurs still roamed the earth, and that is a good thing. "Bad Girl" is a hoot, if only for the aside: "Who cares if Michael Stipe is straight or gay." Cowboy Mouth has finally captured the breathless fun of their incendiary live shows. --Jaan UhelszkiCustomer Reviews:
Umm...ok..........2004-12-23
Some of these songs could have possibly been decent tracks, if it were not for over-production and the throwing in of unnecessary electronic equipment (hear "Tomorrow Never Knows," which I am honestly still trying to figure out). One other thing which brings this album is the lyrics in some songs. I realize that Cowboy Mouth has never taken themselves too seriously, which is one reason why they have always been such an attraction for so many people, but do we really need to be reminded of the travesty that occurred a few years ago known as the "Nookie"? I had to read the booklet before I could believe they actually used the term "nookie" in a song.
This album is by no means a total loss though. As I said at the beginning there are a few very good songs, and the experimentation does seem to pay off in a few spots, including "Trouble," "Bad Girl," and even the title track "Uh-Oh" is fairly decent. The bottom line on this one is that some people may dig the new effects and whatnot, but if you're a fan of the old, laid-back Mouth, you might want to give these songs a listen before picking this one up.
WHO ARE THESE GUYS?.......2004-03-26
Only thing better would be LIVE!.......2003-09-23
A Devoted Fan of the Mouth.......2003-09-15
"Uh Oh" is certainly catchy. The songs are very hummable, and it makes great background music. But to me, this CD sounds over produced. They obviously had a lot of fun with the mixing machines, and other sound effects in the studio, which I think detracts from the truly excellent singing that this group does. I have seen them live four times, and these guys do not need sythesizing to sound good.
Also disappointing is the overwhelming number of Fred songs on this CD. It seems like there are fewer tuns fronted by the other band member on this CD, as opposed to the other CDs. I was especially surprised the Fred was the one fronting the song "Invincible", as that is one of Paul Sanchez's songs from his solo album.
All of that being said, there are some redeeming elements. We finally have a studio version of Trouble, a song that has been a hit in concert for the last couple of years. The last track on the CD, "Bad Girl" is also really excellent.
If you love the Mouth as I do, you should pick up this CD. Because - let's be honest - any CD by Cowboy Mouth is worth listening to. If you are just getting started with Cowboy Mouth, I would recommend Are You With Me or Easy before purchasing this album.
Cowboy Mouth releases another great disc!.......2003-08-20
Griff's "Can't Stay Here" rocks my socks and has a killer bassline. Paul's "Invincible" is awesome, but it's not as great as the version from Hurricane Party. Fred singing on "Senseless" was a bit of surprise, too.
But, heck, I can point out all the faults I want till I'm blue in the face and every time I listen to Uh Oh I fall in love with it again. (Uh-oh! I'm falling in love again! Sorry...I couldn't resist.)
Over all, if you're checking out Cowboy Mouth for the first time, I'd be reluctant to recommend this to you because their other albums are much better, but it's still darn good.
If you're a long time fan of the Mouth, then you should definitely add this to your collection.

"Pink Houses" is the state-of-our-union anthem that John Mellencamp likes to boast about, but the real class-awareness beef of 1983's Uh-Huh is in "Authority Song" ("Call up my preacher... / He said, 'You don't need no strength, you need to grow up, son'")--not to mention the kidding cynicism of "Crumblin' Down" and the Mellencamp-John Prine collaboration "Jackie O." With his Stonesy band crackling behind him, the newly minted superstar also shows that he gets the joke of his "serious business" on "Play Guitar," which might have been the album's fourth hit single if not for its admonition to "forget all about that macho shit." --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

Mellencamp acknowledges his fame in "Crumblin Down," and pokes fun at society in "Pink Houses," "Serious Business," and "Play Guitar." With the rebellious attitue displayed on "Authority Song," along with the world-wise anthem "Pink Houses," Mellencamp positioned himself as a singer of the people.
"Uh Huh" is a classic rock n roll album, there's no doubt about it. While Mellencamp's songwriting isn't always world-class (though close), his melodies and voice enrapture. Do you need to buy this album? Let's here it: "Uh huh."

Still Sounds Good.......2007-07-07
Forever praise the crude cartoon dog!.......2007-01-22
Few pop culture icons avoid this suspended animation of perpetual youth. The remaining Beatles appear far more as the 1960s loveable mop tops than the old men they have become. Images of the young Diana Ross outnumber recent photos of her by an enormous margin. Obituaries of celebrities from bygone eras always sport a historic photo (see Lillian Gish, Janet Leigh, Sandra Dee; the media does allow men to age somewhat, but not most women). All of this suggests that change and age remain anathema in the realm of entertainment. Enter facial surgery, various bodily implants, and the incessant emphasis on a star's single most successful hit song, movie, or persona.
Somehow David Byrne evaded most of this mess. His polymorphic career has embraced change, experimentation, and intelligence. Even his previous band, Talking Heads, morphed from release to release. Some have called the transition from the albums "Fear of Music" to "Remain in Light" the most radical transformation ever accomplished by a rock band. Once Byrne went solo in 1989, he continued his incessant exploration. "Rei Momo," expanding on the Talking Heads' final album "Naked," plunged head first into Latin music styles. Some reveled in the blaring horns and hip gyrating rhythms. Others, maybe inspired by cultural freeze-drying, bemoaned that the quirky king of rock's fringe had abdicated. In 1992, those same querulous types welcomed Byrne's second solo album, "Uh-Oh," with wide open limbs. Why? Because "Uh-Oh" sported music more akin to Talking Heads than "Rei Momo."
From the pulsating discotheque sounds that launch the album, it becomes clear that "Uh-Oh" is no "Rei Momo II." "Now I'm Your Mom" celebrates sex change as a natural and even a beautiful human act. "I was your dad," Byrne sings, then rockets his voice into squeaky falsetto for the line "Now I'm your mom!" The song's infectious grooves will even have hardcore conservatives caroling about the joys of transsexuality. "Girls On My Mind" delves into the straight man's psyche via a demented honky tonk beat. Byrne sent the ominous "Something Ain't Right" to the brilliant Tom Zé for arranging. Zé's contributions include the whistles, groans, tweets, and flutters that pervade the song. In the song's angry climax, Byrne shouts to the sky "come on down you old fart let's see if you've got a heart!" "She's Mad," the closest Byrne has come to a solo hit, received ample airplay on alternative stations. The song's video featured then shockingly novel digital morphing effects. Byrne becomes a house, a sheep, a bunny, amongst other things. "Hanging Upside Down" explores the ups and downs, but mostly the downs, of mall culture. "Tiny Town" revisits the theme Byrne expounded in "The Big Country." It still doesn't sound like he'd live there if you paid him.
The album's not so subtle cover depicts a horde of angels praising a rather crude Snoopy-esque cartoon dog on a throne. Uh-Oh, indeed.
"Uh-Oh" remains one of Byrne's most enjoyable solo efforts. It covers new ground while incorporating African and Latin American styles. The album also carried on his tradition of transformation. "Uh-Oh" sounds different than any of his other releases. Nonetheless, his career has had a strange consistency to it and "Uh-Oh" fits right in. Square peg square hole. Byrne somehow seems exempt from the mainstream mantra of sameness. His subsequent releases, four to date, exemplify this. Who could freeze-dry this guy? Impossible. Plus, Byrne has allowed age to catch up. He now sports a head full of spiky gray mad scientist hair. He lives on, changed, and, like everyone, forever changing.

Anyone who's ever prepared a bubbly drink for a patio party while listening to Esquivel (or one of the endless series of Ultra Lounge comps from the mid-'90s) will know precisely where Tipsy's coming from. This playful modern group uses all the sonic cues of classic lounge and exotica music--popping-popcorn rhythms, string arrangements set on "tickle," tiki-surf guitars, and interjections of "Zow!" that sound as if they were sung by people in well-tailored suits. But Tipsy are keenly aware that this music's kitsch factor went out of hipster fashion about five years ago--the same time that their great debut, "Trip Tease," got lost in the ironic-lounge avalanche. So here they move beyond the (squeeze) cheese factor and craft infectiously upbeat songs that stand just fine on their own, from the sunnily propulsive "Papaya Highway" to the spy-themed "Swallowtail." And in a nod to today's electronica mayhem makers and yesterday's psychedelic popsters, they insert disorienting sound effects at every other turn. (See the blender-collaged "Hey!") Forget the retro-revival factor; Uh-Oh is a perkily distracting good time in any era. --Lisa GidleyCustomer Reviews:

Welcome to the Lounge on a Forbidden Planet!.......2004-02-16
Some exceptional tracks are:
"Reverse Cowgirl" which sounds like Beck meets Cibo Matto meets Hank Williams meets the Jetsons...figure that one out?
"Hard Petting" which is right out of a late 60's Euro-trash movie or maybe one of those goofy "Our Man Flynt" movies...kinda kitsch spy and Italian/French movie where they are driving around in a convertible down on the coast..you know what I mean, the slide whistle really adds a powerful kick.
"Papaya Freeway" is like Martin Denny on a far out trip, if you can imagine that one, like tropics meet forbidden planet.
"Sweet Cinnamon Punch" reminds me of some off the wall 60's movie where you are prety sure something naughty is going on but all the bizzarre swooping camera angles make it a bit unlcear, on the other hand I can see Barbarella floating around to this as well.
Overall, I really give this 4 1/2 stars, it is spectacular background music for your oh so hip cocktail party!
Tipsy improves on perfection!.......2003-02-07
Musically, I find this album to be a little darker than the first one. It is still great music to clean house by, but at the same time if it is playing and you are doing nothing else, it can start making you think before you realize it. Rather than the bubble-like gems of the first album, these songs are more like uncut opals--attractive any way you look at them, but truly sparkling under close scrutiny over time. "Fur Teacup", for example, is on the surface a typical Tipsy composition, fun and engaging. But upon closer listening it shows the influences of many types of music, such as using Middle Eastern flutes, and suddenly you realize you're actually listening to a very profound piece.
"Uh-Oh" is not so much an improvement on the first album as it is simply an evolution of that sound. The first CD makes a great pool-party CD, but what "Uh-Oh" accomplishes is a little more tricky: it is not only a great party album, but one that can make you have the profoundest revelations if you listen to it in the dark, alone. Bravo Tipsy!

When spontaneity becomes predictable........2001-11-21
Wow, this review seems excessively harsh, but Uh-Oh is frustrating because: 1) it is an Asphodel release, and they have done right in the past and 2) there are a few good tracks on this CD (LP) that undoubtedly took some effort, like tracks 1 and 2, and some of the darker tracks that other reviewers have bellyached about. These tracks tell me that Tipsy is capable of better stuff and that Uh-Oh isn't worth your money. If Tipsy is reading this review then sorry, guys, for being so mean. No, wait, I'm not going to apologise; I really don't like this record. Oh, hell, OK, I'm sorry. But I'm not going to buy another Tipsy. I'll save my money for We's next release.
