Marston Does it Again - and Again.......2002-03-13

Ward Marston has developed an amazing ability to bring old recordings back to life. The Gadski collections - there are two of them on his label - are amazing preservations of one of the great but neglected dramatic sopranos of the first 50 years of the 20th century. Listeners brought up on modern sound will have trouble with the surface noise; but learn to listen beyond it. Nobody sings like this today.

Although this CD has its place as a historic recording of Johanna Gadski, the sound quality is so terrible it is practically impossible to even evaluate Gadski's voice. If you buy this CD, do it only to have a recording of hers in your collection. DO NOT buy this CD for the great repertoire on it. It is not something you will listen to for enjoyment when wanting to hear beautiful music.

An excellent preservation of a remarkable voice........1998-09-23

Here is the "Golden Age" dramatic soprano, captured at her best in excerpts from the German and Italian operas in which she excelled, with some truly exquisite recordings of songs thrown in for good measure. This long-neglected artist has finally achieved the recognition she has so long-since deserved.

There's so much gray area in the music generally termed Celtic that it's hard to know what to make of it. While some dives straight into the new age bins, much is as authentic as a shot of Bushmill's. This release is closer to Irish breakfast tea. It's new agey in spots, but with enough of the real thing to offer satisfaction. There are no pretensions of being traditional, and there's a definite attempt to woo the rock market, as on the song that finds the masterful Christy Moore joined by Bono and the Edge from U2. Nor are the women ignored. Kate Bush contributes her first new offering in a long time, singing in quite passable Gaelic. The crowning glory, ironically, belongs to someone who at one time seemed determined to put her heritage behind her--Sinead O'Connor. Here she gives a glorious sean nos--old style--rendition of "He Moves Through the Fair," one of the great songs from the tradition, with beautiful ornamentation, more than enough to tip the scales heavily in this collection's favor. --Chris Nickson

Wonderful music!.......2004-05-30

I happened to pick this album up for a pittance at a discount store. It has provided hours of enjoyment with a variety of songs ranging from sprited, (Riverdance), to the poignant Sky Road, which actually brought tears to my grown daughter...wonderful lyrics! A nice introduction into the world of Celtic music.

Not what i thought.......2002-11-16

Okay, so i truly thought this album would have some traditional celtic music without the new age fancy smancy. Boy was i wrong. The songs worthy of mention are "Eanair", which is a beautiful song and one of the best on the album, "The Sky Road" which is touching and sad, "The Child Dierdre" which too is beautiful, "Mna Na hEireann" is so so wonderful and just flat out pretty even if i don't know what the song means, "Sean Deora" is my favorite song on the whole album and the vocals are outstanding (kudos to Kila), and "He moved through the Fair" is beautiful all unto itself. The well known "Riverdance" is good too, leaves the dancing to yer imagination. I just have to say that some of the songs unmentioned sound way to close to western country music for my liking, and the strange new age songs help throw the stars down to 3. But the songs i mentioned are awesome. I probably would buy this album knowing what it was just for those songs. Best o Tidings to all.

Brilliant Songs from Great Irish Artists.......2001-01-13

If you love Irish music then this is one for your collection! All 13 songs are either adaptations from old folk music (such as Kate Bush singing {in Irish} "Mna Na Heireann" and Sinead O'Conner singing {almost} acappella "He Moved Through the Fair") or originals performed by Irish greats like Christy Moore, Sean Keane and Frances Black. This has a few toe tappers but it is mainly a mellow album full of tin whistles and uillian pipes. It has become one of those rare albums I can listen to in its entirety. I'm sure you will enjoy it as much as I!

Various artists re-interpret Irish folk music.......1999-02-13

As the name implies, this is a collection of songs based largely on Irish folk music. After a fast start with the well known "Riverdance", the album settles into a more relaxing tone the rest of the way. There are a few gems here that make the album worthwhile - along with a few less than inspired songs. It is interesting to note a few popular artists here take a step in a differant direction. Not quite New Age music, but also not quite your traditional Irish breakfast music.

Album Description

John Langstaff, now 83 years of age, is the founder and director emeritus of Revels, the non-profit performing arts company that produces Revels Records as well as 'The Christmas Revels' annual winter solstice celebrations in 12 cities across the country. This is the complete collection of Langstaff's disc, featuring all four acclaimed previously re-released CDs originally recorded in England. The recordings have been digitally re-mastered at London's famed Abbey Road Studios. Included are many traditional British and American folk songs and ballads, most with simple, art song settings. Legendary pianists Sir Gerald Moore, Sam Mason and John Powell, as well as guitarist Martin Best, are featured.

Absolutely Ravishing.......2006-02-15

This is one of about ten CDs (out of over one thousand) that, if forced to choose, would take with me to that perverbial desert island. Only Rosa Ponselle had a voice that could match Eleanor Steber in her prime for sheer beauty of tone and security of line. From standard coloratura fare to beloved chestnuts, this album could be an aural definition for the word "beauty."

Volume I is not enough.......2004-03-28

It is a welcome development that more and more of Eleanor Steber's work from 1940-1960 is being reissued. She was the greatest American soprano in her prime and too few of her complete opera performances were recorded. People who listen to this collection are amazed, because opera lovers of today associate Steber with her voice of the 1970s instead of the glorious instrument heard on this disc. Dead-on Rossini and Thomas coloratura? Sensual Massenet? Thrilling Puccini with breath control to spare? It's all on this recording and I urge VAI and the owners of the original source material to put together volume 2 so we can rediscover more of this treasure.

A great American soprano in her early prime.......2001-04-12

Eleanor Steber's tale is at once inspirational and cautionary. It is inspirational for her success as a home-grown and trained talent, a New England girl who became a leading artist at the Metropolitan Opera, possessing one of the most beautiful soprano voices of the twentieth century. Later she became a distinguished teacher of voice. It is cautionary for her frustrations with autocratic Met manager Rudolf Bing and the vocal difficulties of her later career, exacerbated by alcohol and relationships with unworthy men.

Happily, none of the darker side of Steber's life is vocally evident in this collection of recordings dating from her early years. Some of the earliest recordings, notably the Debussy, are substandard in sound, and some discomfort at the top is evident, a whitening and sharpening on sustained high notes. Whether this is due to a still-developing vocal technique or to the vagaries of recording technology is not clear. The Traviata excerpts are well-sung, but lack the Italianate tang and dramatic intensity of the great interpreters of the role. Any small reservations the listener may have, though, are completely vanquished by the later tracks, which reveal the familiar lustrous, seamless sound generously applied to Italian and French operatic repertoire, oratorio, and popular standards. Steber sings everything with emotional urgency, and reveals a surprising command of florid technique in the Rossini and Thomas arias. Her "Signore, ascolta," sung in English, justly draws an ovation from the live audience for its perfectly placed, long-sustained concluding B-flat--perhaps only Montserrat Caballe has equalled or surpassed Steber's rendition of this phrase. Her traversal of the hoary chestnut "Danny Boy" could draw tears from a statue. All in all, this CD is a great souvenir of a great American voice.

No Hype -- Just the Finest "Best of " Chieftains Collection.......2002-08-02

There are several "best-of" Chieftains compilations, released on a handful of different labels, but this one is the best. This record, as well as the other Claddagh Chieftains releases, tends to get overlooked in the record store bins in favor of the the flashier Columbia and RCA discs. This is a shame, since the Chieftains did some of their purest, most exhilarating recording for Claddagh.

These recordings were made long before the so-called "Celtic Revival" of the Riverdance-era, for a traditional music label who respected the music too much to march a never-ending parade of celebrity singers through the Chieftains' studio or design New Agey covers for their albums. The bare- bones production on this disc does a far better job of capturing the Chieftains' energy and inventive arrangements than the later state-of-the-art recordings. This is most apparent on "Carolan's Concerto", a tune the Chieftains have recorded several times in their career with the likes of James Galway and the Irish National Orchestra, but never as well, and to such dramatic effect, as they did here -- playing by themselves, in a quiet studio without benefit of reverb or extra musicians, elevating Carolan's simple tune to a soaring masterpiece.

It was one of those days... I did not like to do anything. Anything period. Well, anything does not includ listening to music on net! I discovered The Chieftans by surfing around the net!!! It changed my mode like a flash. Wish I knew how to dance with it.
