Too Much of a Good Thing?.......2003-10-24

I'm fairly familiar with two of the pianists in this collection - Jim Bajor, who is local, and Tom Barabas, to whom I have listened for several years. Until this album I haven't had the opportunity to listen to Stephen Jacob and Christine Brown. They all do their work in the styling of light jazz and easy listening that is often labeled incorrectly as New Age. Sometimes I feel that that phrase is used as a euphemism for anything that is pleasant, rather than its original definition, which had more to do with the meditative nature of the composition. In any case they are all accomplished at their art and worth listening to.

It is fair to report that all four musicians produce work that is melodic, technically interesting, and, yes, pleasant to here. None of the pieces demonstrate what I would call the technical brilliance of someone like Jordan Rudess, who drifts in and out of this genre but has a tendency towards keyboeard pyrotechnics. But neither is any of their work plodding or monotonic. 'Very listenable' may not be the highest compliment one can pay a musician, but it is way ahead of whatever is in third place.

If I have a complaint to make, it is that, despite different recording studios and instruments, the tonalities are so close that the entire album could have been the product of a single person. Barabas is slightly more adept, Bajor slightly more melodic, Jacob more controlled, etc., but there are no glaring contrasts. I'm not sure if this is a fault or not, since the result is certainly more than acceptable. Given all the overloads that life throws at us, I'm not sure complaining about too much goodness is entirely fair.

Outstanding collection of orginal piano work.......1998-10-22

This collection of original piano pieces is simply excellent. This instrumental is melodic, sweet, romantic, soothing and timeless. I find myself leaving this CD in my car day after day without tiring of the melodies. Beautiful!

I really find this music conducive to relaxation - I use it in my Shiatsu clinic.

a priceless gem..........2004-12-23

I have the hobby (for lack of a better word) of picking up a tune and exploring all its different versions. Lately I was exploring the classic bolero "La historia de un amor". I must've found some 50 odd versions of it and was almost wrapping up on it, when I wandered to the Quintango website and chanced upon a clip of a tango-ized version of this song by Quintango. I knew I'd found a rare gem. I must've played the clip some 20-30 times over! Quintango's version of it heavenly, and can instantly trigger a flood of emotions, and I know Ive found a gem. I'm on my way to purchasing all their CDs.

"Secret Places" is a delight........2002-06-04

Recommended for people who like to listen to tango music. This is Washington DC's best-known and most recorded tango ensemble. They have played at the Kennedy Center, the White House, and the Pan American Union, as well as the Argentine Embassy. The ensemble includes 2 violins, double bass, cello, and piano. All musicians have impeccable academic credentials and have performed professionally with regional symphony orchestras.

The music on the disk contains a lot of favorites: "La Cumparsita," "El dia que me querias," "Nueve de Julio," "Taquito militar," "Tus besos fueron mios," and "Caminito." There are only two pieces by Piazzola. I mentioned that because some dancers do not like disks that have a preponderance of pieces by Piazzola. Yes, some people stay away from "tango nuevo." Dancers will recognize the names Carlos Gardel, Gerardo Rodriguez, Mariano Mores, and Juan de Dios Filberto. The arrangements are great, and the presentation is delightful.

Secret Places.......2000-09-16

This is a most thrilling CD. The music is vibrant and each attack is crisp and in tune. Tango appreciation has taken a huge step forward with QuinTango and anyone that listens to this fine CD connot fail to be converted. I was lucky enough to see this group perform in the Kennedy Center to an overflowing audience and they are as superb live as they are on this CD.

You don't have to tango to love this recording.......2000-09-16

It's lush. It's sensual. It's soothing. When you listen to Quintango (either in person or on one of their CDs) you are transported to the beauty of the tango. As much fun as it is to watch (and I've been told - to dance), it's splendid to hear this group play tango music. This is a must for any lover of tango and its music and even for those who are not familiar with either. Try it, you'll love it.

"Secret Places, Private Thoughts" is a gorgeous collection of original piano solos by multi-talented pianist/composer/arranger Lesley Spencer. As the title suggests, these pieces are mostly reflective and intimate, allowing the listener a glimpse inside of the composer's soul. Often, albums of this type convey feelings of pain and loss, but the thoughts and places reflected upon here are mainly warm and pleasant - not necessarily joyful, but optimistic and soothing. The music is varied enough for repeated active listening, but the tone and mood are fairly consistent, creating a feeling of an easy-going peace that would serve as a lovely backdrop for quiet activities. Lesley Spencer's other recordings have been mostly piano and ensemble works, so this solo piano album is especially welcome.

The CD opens with "Song of the Wind," a piece that sometimes swirls and dances and sometimes just kind of breezes along. This is a gentle, playful wind that catches falling leaves and keeps them from touching the ground. A beautiful beginning! "Childhood Revisited" celebrates innocence and beckons us back to simpler times. "Affairs of the Heart" is poignant and more than a little nostalgic, remembering good times and people who have come and gone from our lives. "Sweet Voice Within" is one of my favorites. Warm and gentle, this piece exudes a quiet joy. "Only Yesterday" is another favorite, with its powerful sense of longing. "Piano Suite" is a five-movement piece that illustrates five different emotions and states of mind. "Nostalgia" delicately conveys the sense of longing for the past; "Empathy" gives a feeling of true understanding and acceptance; "Longing" has a rubato rhythm and the deep bass notes of the piano evoke feelings of passion; "Affection" is light, warm, and sunny; and "Serenity" depicts that sense of perfect inner peace that can often be elusive. "Piano Suite" is a powerful and compelling work. "Ballade" feels especially personal to me. Its gentle flow and deep introspection seem almost naked in their sincerity and honesty. "Impromptu" is probably my favorite piece on this album. Deeply emotional and passionate, the listener is drawn in and held tight by this heartfelt musical tale. "Spirit Awakening" takes us back to the light and joyful side of life, and "Joie De Vivre" closes the album with a bit of musical sunshine.

"Secret Places, Private Thoughts" is an outstanding collection of deeply personal piano solos. The music is soothing and uplifting, but is far more substantial than "ear candy." Recommended!
