The smoky, sometimes edgy voice of Gladys "Bobi" Cespedes is undeniably the centerpiece to this Afro-Cuban ensemble. That said, the large group also lays down a thick carpet of percussion-rich clave beats built out of timbales, bongos, and guiros, and then stacks rich trumpet and trombone flares atop the dancing rhythms. Famous for their comprehensive mix of Cuban styles, Conjunto Cespedes plays a bright-eyed dance music that taps into rumba traditions for the magnetic percussion and vocals. They simultaneously tap the rich ores of son and salsa to stir a profound mix of rhythm and harmony, rich with dense low-end motion and emotive melody. But focus for a single moment on "Bobi" Cespedes's voice, and you will have witnessed a core of the group's musical beauty. --Andrew Bartlett

One of his best albums.......2006-03-06

Perfect Performances.......2007-07-11
The transmission of musical culture is a favorite (and fascinating) subject for Jordi Savall and this CD includes some beautiful and rousing music. The CD begins with four selections reflecting Iberian music that sets the stage of presenting a song (usually) followed by a dance. Following this introduction we are off the Americas and music from Peru, Guatemala and Mexico.
As pointed out in the booklet, the colonial expansion that took place during the 15th and 16th centuries widen cultural connections to include Africa, Asia and the Americas, which is reflected in this collection of music. One will discover a mixing of African dance rhythms and percussion with European polyphony. This is nicely demonstrated by the first selection with its strong use of drums and bold brass playing combined with a fast-paced dance melody and mixed voices. The second work, by an anonymous composer, is quite a contrast with its more restrained and courtly rhythms played by string instruments without the percussion or brass. The Hanacpachap Cussicuinin is scored for percussion, brass and voices sounding like a solemn funeral procession and is followed by a beautifully played piece for harp and percussion from Mexico. The incomparable Montserrat Figueras sings with peerless passion and beauty, particularly in the short Tono Hidalgo of Juan Hidalgo. One could go on and on extolling the wonderful music of this CD, suffice it to say that among my collection of early music discs this one is at the top.
As with all of Jordi Savall's recordings the performance is excellent and beautifully balanced with voices and instruments receiving equal emphasis. If you do not have this disc and love early music get it without hesitation.

Again and again we hear "Mucho me pesa la cabeza"..... "Much it pains my head."
This music is so ephemeral... so unique.... so mind massaging..... I love reading while it softly plays in the background in the room!
The massage is quite expansive!
Not a painful massage at all, but it does get inside your head!

ýCreoleý Songs and Dances from Old Spain to the New World.......2004-05-16
My translation of the album title, given above, is not exact. "Criolla" can refer to anything Latin American, and a "villancico" is first and foremost a Spanish poetic genre from the 15th and 16th centuries. The Norton/Grove Concise Encyclopedia tells us that it was "originally derived from a medieval dance lyric and associated with rustic or popular themes." Certainly the rustic and popular loom large in this lively selection of Renaissance music. Hesperion XXI and its director Jordi Savall have often sampled folk styles in their imaginative reconstitutions of early performance tradition. So most of these selections get percussion accompaniment accentuating the dance element, while strumming guitars, castanets, maracas, and more are employed discreetly but effectively. Lusty and characterful vocal contributions come courtesy of La Capella Reial de Catalunya and soprano Montserrat Figueras, who takes a couple of fine solo turns. It's all recorded in a warm, resonant church acoustic.
In his liner notes, Prof. Rui Vieira Neri introduces the Spanish part of this collection by noting a long tradition of mixing high and low culture, not to mention Christian, Jewish, and Muslim cultural elements in the art and music of the Iberian peninsula. And right away we get to hear a vocal chaconne (a dance imported from the Indies "by mail" according to Lope de Vega) and a Moresca "Di Perra Mora," with strong Arabic flavor and hints of 5/2 meter.
Of the New World selections, some of the most engaging combine indigenous languages with Netherlands musical style. The solemn processional hymn "Hancpachap cussicuinin," written by a native composer in the Quechua language of Peru, was also the first example of polyphony printed in the Americas. Gaspar Fernandes (1570-1629), chapel master at the Puebla cathedral, wrote a number of villancicos that mix Castilian with Nahuatl, the Aztec tongue, including "Tleycantimo choquiliua" on this recording. It is based on a local Indian dance, as is another Christmas villancico included here, "Ay que me abraso," which moves to the beat of the Mexican guaracha.
Bantu and Yoruba phrases crop up frequently in the refrains of the African-influenced numbers, so numerous in their day that they were customarily referred to in the old manuscripts as Negro, Negrilla, or Guineo. Savall includes three such pieces on this recording; they abound in the sort of rhythmic intricacies and call-and-response effects that Europeans already associated with Africa. Among the most infectious is "Antonya, Flasiquiya, Gasipá," in which the song's characters wake up after a long night of drinking and dancing in order to go to Bethlehem to pay homage to baby Jesus, where more carousing will be called for. Each refrain ends with the words "Mucho me pesa la cabeza": "Oh, my aching head."
I wouldn't want to give the impression that this music will appeal mostly to scholars. In fact, it is simply full of human joy, tenderness, and fun, qualities that leap across the centuries at us and need no special pleading, thanks to the terrific performances on this CD. You will enjoy it.

This might just be the Hildegard CD you're having if you're having only one. Unlike CDs by the better-known Sequentia and Gothic Voices--all superb and highly recommended--here we get Hildegard sung by one voice, that of the lovely Rosa Lamoreaux, whose natural, warm, unaffected, but dramatically involved presentation keeps the listener riveted. She is supported by Tina Chancey and Scott Reiss (known collectively as Hesperus), who entwine the vocal lines with music for recorders, hammered dulcimer, vielle, viola da gamba, and other instruments--as well as performing three solos. Recorded in a soft-focus acoustic, this disc surrounds you with delicacy, devotion, and elegance--much the way Hildegard might have wanted it. Highly recommended to all lovers of beautiful music. --Robert LevineCustomer Reviews:

As befits a release on a fledgling indie label, Dualtone's tribute to Johnny Cash celebrates the feistier fringes of the Man in Black's catalog, adding a few mainstream milestones. In what is plainly a labor of love for all concerned, highlights extend from the pop innocence of "Ballad of a Teenage Queen" by Rodney Crowell (formerly married to Johnny's daughter Rosanne) to the folkier strains and husband-and-wife harmonies of "Pack Up Your Sorrows" by Bruce Robison and Kelly Willis to the honky-tonk majesty of "I Still Miss Someone" by pianist Earl Poole Ball. Some of the more familiar touchstones don't fare quite as well, with Billy Burnette turning in a tepid "Ring of Fire" and Dale Watson singing in a lower than comfortable register on "I Walk the Line," though James Intveld rises to the challenge of "Folsom Prison Blues." The house band and the largely acoustic arrangements give the 18-cut album more unity than many such projects, as the collection shows why one of the most influential and commercially successful artists in country's history remains an icon of alt-country as well. --Don McLeeseCustomer Reviews:

Music appreciation textbooks and timelines in magazines often name Guillaume Dufay as the first great composer of the European Renaissance, but one might equally call him the last great composer of the Middle Ages. This disc presents all 13 of Dufay's isorhythmic motets--the final masterpieces of a very medieval-minded genre. During the Middle Ages, music was considered a science (just like mathematics), and isorhythmic motets are constructed according to strict arithmetical principles. In addition, each voice generally has a different text, while the fundamental voice (called the tenor) usually has no text at all and is often (as here) performed by instruments. As this description might indicate, isorhythmic motets are among the most intellectualized and least emotive works in the entire pre-20th century repertory--yet Paul van Nevel and the Huelgas Ensemble achieve an impressive range of expression from such seemingly poker-faced music. Apostolo glorioso (composed for the consecration of a church) and Ecclesie militantis (written for the coronation of a Pope), performed by choir and (antique) brass, are ornate and imposing, while Magnanime gentes laudes, done by one soprano, one tenor, and one trombone doubled by recorder, is intimate and delicate. The director's excellent program notes explain how isorhythmic motets are constructed and what to listen for. Van Nevel also offers wise advice: Don't listen to this disc straight through--rather, listen carefully to one or two motets several times until you recognize the structural markers, then move on to other motets later. Following that advice will make this CD somewhat more work than most, but the listener's effort will be richly repaid by these splendid performances. --Matthew WestphalCustomer Reviews:
Majestic music. Not to be missed.......2006-07-09
Much in the same way that it can be argued that Mahler took the symphony to the max, Dufay uses the models of the previous generation (ex. Machaut) and elevates the material to such a level that a nothing new really can be added. Dufay's subsequent compositions took off a different direction, and can probably be considered the first music of the Renaissance. It is fascinating to note the importance of proportion within these works. The conductor, Paul Van Nevel, notes "Not a single change in tempo has been applied so as not to cause any imbalance in the mathematical ratios."
But don't worry; you don't even have to be good at math to enjoy these beautiful, majestic works. Although the texture can get a little complicated (there can be up to three different texts being sung simultaneously), there is a certain permeating splendor to these works that is immediately accessible. The motet "Salve flos Tusce gentis" is among the most beautiful pieces of music I have heard - in the entire history of music. Despite the immediate accessibility of these pieces, my appreciation grows upon each listen.
These are choral pieces, but there is often accompaniment by sackbuts, vieles (early version of the violin) and flutes a bec (early version of a wooden flute) in this recording, which is probably consistent with the original performances of these motets. The singing by the Huelgas Ensemble is great, and I am really amazed by the singers' ability to fit a great number of notes in relatively small space in order to preserve the "mathematical ratios."
The CD is accompanied by very detailed notes and instructions on how to listen to these pieces. It is pretty rare indeed for a CD to come with listening instructions, but the conductor has good advice. Listen to each work as a standalone piece, listen to each motet several times, and be attentive. This will ensure that you get the most out of this music.
Highly recommended. This CD is a must for Early Music fans, but the beauty of these works will reach anyone who appreciates good music. Dufay's mastery is unparalleled, get this CD.

A Dufay recording with irresistable communicative vitality.......2005-07-09
When I call Dufay a 'Renaissance' composer this is the result of degree of musical complexity displayed in his music which is so remarkably advanced that the term 'Medieval' sits rather poorly with him, although there is still the argument that he is the last great Medieval composer rather than the first Renaissance one. In fact if the complexity of his musical thought is a way of gauging things, then Dufay deserves to be called a Renaissance man more than Nikolaus Copernicus whose basis for claiming that the sun was the center of the solar system was in fact because he was part of a sun-cult that felt that the sun was so God-like that it HAD to be the center, even though the model of the solar system with the planets circling the sun in circular orbit mathematically fails pretty miserably compared with having the sun going around the Earth in circular orbit: You have to have the planets circling elliptically for that 'post-Copernican' model to work at all. Clearly we all need to do some rethinking about the history of these times with this CD being a perfect place to start.
An isorhythm (iso=same) consists of an order of durations or rhythms, known as the 'talea' (literally "cutting"), which is repeated within a tenor melody whose pitch content known as the 'color', varied from the talea. The isorhythmic construction was often varied through the use of strict or free rhythmic diminution in the repetition of the color. The term was coined in 1900 by Friedrich Ludwig to describe this practice in 14th and 15th century polyphonic motets but is also found in motets of composers of the Middle Ages such as Machaut, in Indian Classical Music, and in modern composers such as Arnold Schoenberg, Alban Berg, Olivier Messiaen, John Cage, Harrison Birtwistle, and Pierre Boulez. It may be used in all voices or only a few voices. In motets, it began in the tenor voice but was then extended to higher ones. Ars nova composer Philippe de Vitry has been credited with the invention of the technique, but it was neither an invention of Philippe de Vitry nor his exclusive property in the early fourteenth century.
Each one of these motets is a world of rhythmic, melodic and contrapuntal riches unto itself and richly rewards discovering. The Huelgas Ensemble also has greater warmth of sound compared to the English choirs who always strictly only ever use head voice, whereas van Nevel allows his singers to subtly color the music using a voice that comes from deeper down. Further adding to the color of the works is the discreet use of instruments - a practice that has recently regained acceptance in historical practice. The end result is a recording that presents Dufay with irresistable communicative vitality that makes this beautiful CD a real must for any music lover.
Very highly recommended!
