Volume 25 in Hyperion's complete Schubert song edition consists of the famous song cycle Die schöne Müllerin (which sounds just awful when you translate it into "The Pretty Lady Miller"). Tenor Ian Bostridge made quite a splash with his singing of this work, though the recording is not as flattering as others in this series. An interesting gimmick is Dietrich Fischer- Dieskau's reading of the poems that Schubert didn't set. If you don't like this little touch, you can skip those tracks. Johnson's notes are incredible--a veritable tome, no less. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars Big Surprise in this Schubert Series........2006-07-06

'The Hyperion Schubert Edition Complete Songs Nr. 25 Die Schone Mullerin' was quite a surprise when it was first released. I still remember that in the Brit music journals such as Grammaphone, there was much speculation as to who would perform this most important series of Lieder. This is especially true since this, 'Winterreise, and 'Schwanengesang' have been done by the foremost interpreter of Lieder, baritone, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.

Lo and behold, the series major domo, Graham Johnson has double teamed us with the Lieder being sung by new (at the time of release)tenor Ian Bostridge, with introductory material being read by Fischer-Dieskau himself.

I have heard Fischer-Dieskau's 'Die Schone Mullerin' and the interpretation is impeccable, but I really prefer the tenor range over the baritone for these songs.

I notice that Bostridge has recorded this same series for London, and I have not heard this recording, but I firmly endorse this rendition, especially if, like me, you are in love with big, uniform collections of musical works.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-03-25

The story of the beautiful maid of the mill (its origin unknown)has been used by various composers through the years, In fact, Schubert may have heard it first in a Paisiello Opera entitled: La Belle Molinara. Each song in the cycle is a "gem" portraying all the varied moods of a lover yearning for his desire, but not attainable. As in many Schubert songs "Nature" is much in evidence such as in "Wohin" when the lover talks to the babbling brook. Included on this disc are six other poems by Wilhelm Muller that have not been set to music. They are read by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau who was originally slated to make this recording, but circumstances prevented it and then he retired in his seventieth year; after dominating the world of Lieder for over forty years. He happily agreed to do the reading of the six poems on this disc. The 20 songs are: Das Wandern(wandering)-Wohin? (where to?)- Halt (halt)-Danksagung (Thanksgiving to the brook)-Am Feierabend(after work)-Der Neugierige(the inquisitive one)--Ungeduld(impatience)-Morgengruss(morning greeting)-Des Mullers Blumen(the miller's flowers)-Tranenregen(shower of tears)- -Mein!(mine!)-Pause (pause)-Mit Dem Grunen Lauterbande(to accompany the lute's green ribbon)-Der Jager(the huntsman)-Eifersucht Und Stolz(jealousy and pride)- Die Liebe Farbe(the beloved colour)- Die Bose Farbe(the loathsome colour)-Trockne Blumen(withered flowers)-Der Muller Und Der Bach(the miller and the brook)-Des Baches Wiegenlied(the brook's lullaby).Who but an Ian Bostridge with his clear and sweet-sounding young voice could do justice to this beautiful music! Schubert would be pleased. No need really to comment on the excellent skilled accompaniment of Graham Johnson. This is listening pleasure of the highest quality.

5 out of 5 stars Youthful Voice.......2001-09-21

This is an early Bostridge recording, and his youthful voice is a good match for this light-hearted song cycle. A charming disc, one you'll return to repeatedly.

4 out of 5 stars All could have been well if not one thing...........2000-02-26

This would have been a simply phenomenal recording if Mr. Bostridge continued his collaboration with Mr. Drake. Julius Drake is not simply an "accompanist" (what an awful description of any collaborative artist) - he is a first class pianist and musician and that is why the EMI accounts are so wonderful and this one not. It suffers from a rather insensitive and crude, although very competent piano playing as well as from too "opened" miking of the piano. All that said it is still an emphatic "must have" disc!

3 out of 5 stars Disappointment.......2000-01-12

Don't get me wrong - this is a good record. I love Bostridges voice, and his Schuman and Schubert records on EMI are 5 star records (so is his Britten too) but here he sounds too immature. Not only his voice, but the whole interpretation. Hope he'll make a second attempt on the work rather soon, for now I stick to DF-D.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent overview of Dietrich Fischer Dieskau with Deutsche Grammophon.......2005-11-08

"An die Musik", aptly named after the famous Schubert lied of the same title, is an excellent overview of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau's recorded output for Deutsche Grammophon over the past 56 years. On the CDs, there are six Schubert lieder from Fischer-Dieskau's 21 disc set with pianist Gerald Moore, (dating from ca. 1970) and other lieder by Wolf, Richard Strauss, Brahms, and Schoeck. Also included are two chansons of Claude Debussy, and arias from Mozart's "Die Zauberflote" and "Don Giovanni", both conducted by Ferenc Fricsay; small part of Fricsay's Orff "Carmina Burana" (rec. 1949), Schubert's "Dichterliebe" cycle with pianist Jorg Demus; and the 4 Ruckert lieder with Karl Bohm/Berlin Philharmonic. Fischer-Dieskau is amazing, with such a wide repertory, and such enthusiasm for singing such varied and different styles of music.

The bonus DVD, lasting about 28 minutes, is very interesting to watch and listen to. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and pianist Sviatoslav Richter peform 8 famous Schubert lieder in the great room of a hotel in a remote Bavarian village, in utterly charming and rather informal surroundings. The camera work is minimal, the sound, very fine but a little low level mono: filmed in 1978. Fischer-Dieskau looks alot younger here than more recent photos of him, but a little older and more classy than the photos I'm used to seeing of him, which date from the late 1960s. Fischer-Dieskau and Richter work as one, and their partnership and great working relationship is evident from measure 1. There is no doubt watching this that they had alot of fun performing for the cameras.

I am grateful DG released this set: 2 very full discs at over 70 minutes of music each, + the DVD of a telecast not seen since 1978. The sound is very good, even in the mono tracks, and if you like lieder and opera excerpts, you will be delighted. I mention this as one who's experienced Fischer-Dieskau's recordings for 25 years, and been usually delighted by them.

5 out of 5 stars Schubert and Fischer-Dieskau at their best.......1998-12-13

"Die schöne Müllerin" has always been my favourite from the song-cycles. Fisher-Dieskau, as always, brings out more from this most beautiful of Schubert's song-cycles than most other singers manage to. About "Die schöne Müllerin": Wilhelm Müller's poetry may not be uplifting, but there is a simplicity to the lyrics that makes it possible for anybody, especially a young man hurt in love, to identify with them. There are few complications here: the young miller looking for a job and singing joyfully; the mill and the mill-girl, and the romance; the coming in on the scene of the hunter; and the pain of unrequited love that follows. But Schubert's mastery and Fischer-Dieskau's performance bring even the blandest lyrics to life- consider these words from "Der Jäger": "Und willst du mein Schätzchen dich machen beliebt/So wisse, mein Freund, was ihr Herzchen betrübt/Die Eber, die kommen zur Nacht aus dem Hain,....." ( And if you want to endear yourself to my loved one, then know what troubles her heart: the boars come at night in from the forest, ......") But the song strikes fire in the heart. Schubert is at his most wonderful and passionate in 'Die schöne Müllerin', and this recording is an absolute must in any classical-music lover's collection. It is part of the 'standard equipment', among these, Beethoven's 5th and 9th symphonies, Mozart's fortieth, the late quartets, ........ There is a quality here absent from the other song-cycles and from any random compilations of Schubert-Lieder: the continuity, the story from beginning to end, and the persistent alternation of major and minor within songs in many of the twenty songs. (Listen to the ending of Trockne Blumen.) For those who have never listened to any of Schubert's Lieder, this is THE perfect recording to start with. To see how Fischer-Dieskau can bring out from a Lied what most can't, I remember this line most prominently- in "Der Müller und der Bach": "Ach Bächlein, liebes Bächlein, du meinst es so gut/" Here one best sees how totally involved in the song and the music the singer is; how much from within him the words 'kommen hervor'. Words are a poor carrier of the wonder of this recording, one of the all-time greats: Fischer-Dieskau, Schubert's "Die schöne Müllerin". All of Schubert is here.

5 out of 5 stars Richard Crooks: A Fine Man and a Master Singer.......2006-06-23

I most heartily agree with what the earlier reviewer has written of Richard Crooks and of this excellent Stanford Archive set.

The 2 CD set is a most welcome release, and I note that, for now at least, one seller has it available at the bargain price of $14.95. Collectors of the recordings of singers from the early years of last century please note, and snap it up while still on offer at such a modest cost.

These historic recordings have a bad habit of vanishing because too often there is insufficient apparent interest shown by potential buyers. I am relieved to have bought a copy and urge others to do so. Making due allowance for some poor quality recordings by today's high fidelity standards, there are wonderful treasures to enjoy indeed in this set.

            4 out of 5 stars A Richard Crooks Collection.......2003-12-06

American tenor Richard Crooks (1900-1972) would have been just another fine opera and recital singer if it had not been for the popularity of a long-running radio program, "The Voice of Firestone," which he hosted for many years. For this writer, the real difference came in the rare opportunity to actually meet the retired singer at his home in Portola Valley, California, on December 31, 1969. A close friend of mine had known Crooks for several years and he finally arranged for a meeting that memorable day.

Already, however, I had heard many of Crooks' 78-rpm recordings for RCA Victor. Crooks had retired in 1945, due to serious health problems, but he actually could still sing quite well, as can be determined by hearing some of the rare private recordings of Crooks singing at a wedding in 1968. Those recordings, included in this wonderful compilation, are proof that Crooks still had the same beautiful, lyrical voice which had so distinguished his singing over the years. Sadly, Crooks was already battling the cancer that would ultimately take his life in September 1972.

This two-CD compilation, prepared by the Stanford (University) Archives of Recorded Sound, goes back to one of Crooks' earliest recordings, an unreleased Columbia recording of "The Americans Come." It also includes some of his early Victor recordings. Among these is the "Serenade" from Rudolf Friml's "The Student Prince." (Crooks also sang with the Victor Light Opera Company in some of their medley recordings, which were so popular during the 1920's. One of the recordings is a medley of songs from "The Student Prince," in which Crooks alternates with another tenor, Lambert Murphy, on some of the solos.)

One of the amazing releases in this collection is Franz Schubert's "Die schone Mullerin," in which Crooks is wonderfully accompanied by Frank LaForge. Remarkably, Victor never issued these recordings. The only problem is that there are occasional flaws in the original masters, but the brilliant singing comes through.

Crooks often talked about singing in public when he was only 10 years old. Famed German contralto Ernestine Schumann Heink was present at the performance and, at the very end, she planted a big kiss on the boy, to his embarassment. Crooks also spoke of hearing Enrico Caruso sing at the Metropolitan Opera; he said that Caruso's recordings are like listening to the tenor in the lobby with the doors closed!

There are some interesting curiosities in this collection, too, such as some recordings of various operatic arias recorded in Germany and sung in German, regardless of the original language. However, operas were usually sung in German in Germany in the 1920's and 1930's, so Crooks was simply following the custom of the time.

There is also the double-sided 12-inch 78-rpm RCA Victor "Red Seal" disk that Crooks always said was his favorite: two famous arias by Richard Wagner, the "Prize Song" from "Meistersinger" and "En fernem land" from "Lohengrin." One marvels at not only the beauty and sweetness of Crooks' voice but his amazing diction. His training and experience in Germany served him well.

One of the special treats is hearing two Stephen Foster classics, "De Camptown Races" and "Beautiful Dreamer," sung with Bing Crosby on 1940's radio broadcasts. When this writer met Crooks in 1969, he told how he remained in touch with Bing, who lived a few miles north of him. It's clear that the two, very different singers admired each other and they also had some fun singing such songs.

Among Crooks' last commercial recordings was a new version of "The Americans Come," recorded in January 1945. This seemed particularly appropriate as World War II wound down to its terrible end. Sadly, Crooks' serious illness ended his wonderful musical career that year, but the surviving recordings on these two CD's are a lasting testimony to the abilities of this gifted singer who was also a wonderful human being.

            5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2007-03-01

This album was a watershed moment for the art of the guitar accompanied song. In the 50's and 60's, Bream and Pears, with the help of their compatriot composers Britten, Walton, Berkeley and others showed the world that the guitar is well up to the task of supporting and emotionally expanding a full, original song cycle.

The next step, taken here by Ragossnig and fellow arranger John Duarte, was to find a historic cycle which would be suitable, in its entirety for a guitar transcription. Die Schone Mullerin works (uniquely?) beautifully, and this classic record is still the best version with guitar, though Bergstrom and Persson have also made a notable contribution to the catalogue.

Ragossnig and Schreier made many recordings in the 70's of Renaissance-Romantic songs, they were the best in those years after Bream and Pears who were perhaps more adventurous for commissioning new works. Today, the finest ensemble of this sort is probably the Hoppstock and Pregardien duo, I also highly recommend Songs of Love and Death, their only CD to date (2/07).

5 out of 5 stars Original, intimate and tender.......2002-02-28

I should point out from the outset that I tend to be something of a purist with music and so, as a rule, any adaptation of the composer's original goes against the grain for me. But this adaptation for voice and guitar is really so utterly convincing, so seductively intimate and tender, that it really is worth a hearing, and many more hearings after that. The guitar accompaniment is astonishingly loyal to Schubert's piano original, and Peter Schreier sings as if he is there, whispering the story to you and no one else. My favourite version of this cycle will still probably be Ian Bostridge with Graham Johnson at the piano and also the Brigitte Fassbaender version with Aribert Reimann. But this original and unique version will always be a treasure, too.
