Ordinarily, it pays to be wary of collections such as these, which often promise a lot but deliver a mishmash of disconnected excerpts. This disc, however, is something of an exception: you really do get just about all of Puccini's best arias, which is possible, because he didn't write so many operas that choosing the best moments becomes a matter of the producer's personal taste. Also, Puccini's operas are so popular that every major label has excellent complete recordings of all of them, so in making this compilation it was possible to cast from strength: all the singers here are fine. In fact, the only proviso that needs to be made before you rush out and add this disc to your collection is that it's wrong to assume that all of Puccini's best tunes lie in his arias. The opening 10 minutes of any one of his operas will tell you that's not true. So by all means enjoy this disc--then start sampling the operas complete. --David Hurwitz

The music is without question, among the most beautiful ever written. But the quality of the fidelity tells me that many of the selections were recorded live in concert in outdoor venues. I wish that was clear to me before I bought the disc. So, is the music the ultimate? YES! Is the recording the ultimate? NO!

Wonderful Performance but Average Recording Quality.......2002-02-18

I love opera! I love Puccini! Not only is the vocalism important to me, but the quality of the recording as well. I enjoy my hi-tech sound system. I like to feel as if I am sitting in the front row of the first balcony when I listen to opera. This CD is excellent! The vocalists were well chosen. The technical performances are eloquent and emotional, as Puccini should be. However, the quality of the recording is not very good. No matter how you adjust your sound system, the recording is a bit tinny and as a result, the emotional high points of the arias are not as vibrant as they could be if the recording were of better quality. I would recommend this CD to anyone who loves Puccini and who is not as finicky as I!

Sad, Really Sad.......2007-05-13

These CDs don't meet the standards that I expect from Elmer Bernstein's wonderful film music.
*It's just Boring*
The ensemble doesn't have the energy one would expect to play "The Magnificent Seven" and "The Man with the Golden Arm". I think the City of Prague and National Youth Jazz Orchestras were bargain orchestras used to make an inexpensive CD set of one of my favorite film composers. The conducting and arrangements were what made this an obviously bad album.

it's unfortunate that more tracks weren't able to be recorded as theree was a good 15-20 minutes of space remaining on both discs. Regardless, this is an excellent sampler, especially in conjunction with Varese's Bernstein sampler including rare stuff like the Black Cualdron.


With regards to this silva set, these recordings range back to 1994, with Sons of Katie Elder and True Grit being recorded for a John Wayne CD and Bridge At Remagen for a CD of classic War themes. The Great Escape was also recorded for that CD, but producer James Fitzpatrick opted to record a new arrangement (same with Magnificent Seven). In '97, The Buccaneer for included on a Swashbucklers disc, while Heavy Metal was on the popular 'Space and Beyond' compilation. In '98, the world premiere recording of Airplane first appeared on a DISASTERS film disc. So while it may technically be the world premiere RECORDING it certainly is not the world premiere CD RELEASE of that recording. Ghostbusters was included on Space 3: Beyond the Final Frontier, the second followup to the popular 'Space and Beyond'. Fast forward to 2002 and 4 recordings first appeared on WAY OUT WEST: ESSENTIAL WESTERN FILM MUSIC COLLECTION VOLUME TWO, those being The Comancheros, The Hallelujah Trail, The Scalphunters and The Shootist. Man With the Golden Arm and Walk on the Wild are from Silva's JAZZ IN FILM cd.


The remaining tracks were all newly recorded for this release. They are of course the strongest tracks, seeing as the City of Prague Philharmonic has improved over time. I do wonder though why they did not include the older arrangements of Great Escape and Mag. Seven as bonus tracks.

I also recommend the simultaneously released '40 years of Film Music: Jerry Goldsmith' for another great set honoring a late great film composer.

This is a great recording of some of the best film music ever. From the
great westerns to the Theme from Airplane to music he did for television,
Bernstein was one of the greatest.

It's great! It brings back memories of my dad. He loved John Wayne and the old cowboys of the Magnificent Seven. But it's nice just to listen and relax (it's not all cowboy music).

The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

An aural revelation.......2006-10-28

I've loved The Mamas & The Papas music for nearly 40 years and never got tired of hearing their songs on the radio or putting an a greatest hits compilation and just chilling out to the wonderful melodies and harmonies. A couple of years ago I heard this compilation. The first track I played was my favorite, 'Safe in My Garden' followed by 'Look Through My Window'. I couldn't believe what I was hearing; it was like I was hearing these wonderful songs for the first time. I am no audiophile and what I know about the technicalities of remastering you could write on the back of a postage stamp, in a font size of 72; all I know is that this collection makes every other M&TPs release seem like the music is being filtered through a bunch of dirty old socks. Yes, the remastering may not have removed every single audio artifact but it just sounds.....fantastic! if you love the music of The Mamas & The Papas but have not heard this collection, do yourself a favor and try and track down a copy, you won't regret it.

For a digital remaster, I've heard better sound quality..........2006-03-06

I was peripherally aware of the release of this collection, and was finally moved to purchase by the news that it might disappear as MCA is replacing it with a more scale-down release with fewer tracks. What finally convinced me, though, were the glowing reports of the superb sound quality.

I own all of the original albums in their original, "from analog sources"-disclaimered CD releases, as well as the Creeque Alley collection. I now sit with those, as well as the Golden Era Collection, and am comparing the audio side by side.

While there is no question in my mind that this release has the best sound quality, it simply does not deserve the glowing reports heaped upon it here - not enough for the average listener who owns previous issues to dump them in favor it this one.

Yes, the original analog-mastered releases are sonically awful. Creeque Alley which, by the way, says "transferred to digital" in its liner, is not much of an improvement. But compared to a contemporary remaster, such as (a semi-random choice) the recent Japanese reissues of the Spanky and Our Gang original albums, this Mamas and Papas collection is still woefully inadequate. Just listen to the opening of Monday, Monday, for instance, and hear the abundant tape noise and other artifacts in the background. Perhaps the original source material was not available for this project, or perhaps they were damaged so as to limit what could be salvaged, but in any case ... I expected more.

Beautiful Music From A Forgotten Band.......2006-01-05

Now when I say forgotten band, I don't mean that nobody knows the Mama's and the Papa's; every body loves their hits. Beautiful arrangments and melodies mixed with the best vocal arrangments this side of the Beach Boys with simple, yet often heart wrenching lyrics. These four albums (the first two perfect, the second two merely wonderful) make a strong case for the Mama's and the Papa's as one of the greatest bands of all time. The quality of these albums are high; there is nary a filler track. I would say with the last album, the Papa's and the Mama's, there is a small amount of filler. It's obvious John Phillips was running low on steam due to many reasons; drugs, depression etc. The problem with the album is that they tried to break out of their well established style, and into more "hard core" psychadelic sounds. Sometimes it works; sometimes it doesn't. The songs that do work are wonderful.

The other three albums, I can't even explain. It's beauty in music personified. Besides the music, this is an amazing collection as it's a) cheap. I found this for less than 20 bucks I think. Four albums for less than 20 bucks is incomparable. b) the sound is amazing. I have no idea who remastered these, but they sound like they were recorded yesterday. c) Its hard to find. I've only seen this thing in a store once, when I snatched it up. Don't pass this by if you love 60's pop music, and haven't quite experienced the band yet.

James Dewitt's review is perfect so there is not much more to say - but since I have a big mouth I have to say something.

These four individuals came together and created that sound - I think they called it "Herman" - the "creation" when they all sang together. It's THERE and HERE on this remastered masterpiece. There have been great vocal groups - none compare to the quality and sharpness of these four artists.

Their final album of their 60's recordings, "The Papas And The Mamas" is one of the most underrated records of all time. Even Mamas and Papas fans slag it off - which makes me think they need a good carton of Q-tips. Especially on this edition - you can hear how intrinsically John was producing the sound in his studio. Even high as hell they were geniuses. This recording is as important as IF YOU CAN BELIEVE YOUR EYES AND EARS - if not even more so.

A Window To The True Spirit of the 60's.......2004-12-17

Those who are looking for a "favorable, but.." review or more crass and cruel jokes about ham sandwiches, look elsewhere.

For us hippies in the 1960's, there were two songs that made us realize that moment when we looked up when everyone else looked down: If You're Going To San Francisco and California Dreamin'. We realized that it had nothing to do with actually GOING to San Francisco or LIVING in California - it was the idea that things would be approached differently from then on.

John Philips wrote both songs. We knew he understood something deeper about a vibe that was in the country but had not been codified - and he wasn't even a hippie himself. Funny about that.

What he did was to select the finest voices he could find among the end of the popular folk music era and bring them together to perform a new kind of music. People who mistakenly lump his work in with The Association have ears of tin (though I like their work). This is instead the crossroads of The Hi-lo's, the Weavers and a kind of unabashedly romantic soft rock (before that was a pejorative term)that has not been performed since.

This collection comprises some of the finest pure SINGING of the decade of the Sixties, and that was my revelation from it. I had not properly remembered just how good a singer Cass Elliott was. Her voice is just magnificent. Denny Doherty, as one of the two great classic voices to come out of California in the Sixties ( the other being Marty Balin) is just breathtaking in both his approach and his mastery of the material. John's backup singing and his incredible vocal arrangements just lead me to wonder what he could have done with a modern studio with 128 vocal tracks. And as for Michelle, aside from being the absoulute pinnacle of attractive female rock singers then or now, I only wish the interior relationships would have permitted her to sing more leads. The great thing about this collection though is that you can hear EACH VOICE in EACH SONG to the extent that you can follow just John's voice in I Saw Her Again or just Denny in Stumble and Fall. Every lyric in every song can be clearly heard. Imagine that today!

There is more to this collection than just music - it contains artistry. If you like SINGING, even if you aren't sure about the material, BUY THIS SET. If you like the Mamas and Papas, YOU NEED THIS SET. If you want a quick Cliff's Notes on what late 60's music was really supposed to be all about YOU WANT THIS SET.
PS: Make absolutely sure you listen to the "studio chat" piece on the end of Disc 2...it'll clean your ears.

And by the way, speaking as a hippie - Cass died from a heart attack, not from a ham sandwich. Please don't defame her memory any longer with that sad-a**ed urban legend..

Selections from the Greatest Voice of the Last Hundred Years.......2007-03-13

Mario Lanza was, arguably, the greatest tenor and greatest singer of this and the last century. It is difficult to appreciate him without listening to a variety of selections. This collection has some of his best recordings and exhibits the versatility and variety that he possessed that permitted him to "crossover" from opera to popular music with a ease.

I recommend this for those who already know Lanza to some extent but want to go into more depth and understand his marvelous skills.

I had forgotten what a beautiful voice Mario Lanza had. This collection contains opera and pop selections that exhibit the power yet sweetness of his voice. Fortunately, we have his CD's and videos so we can remember and listen to his gorgeous, vibrant voice and personality. I highly recommend this collection along with his wonderful movies, especially The Great Caruso.

WONDERFUL!!!!!.......2005-10-19

The Mario Lanza Collection is a three CD set and it has 61 songs and they all sound great. The mastering on this set is excellent and the song choice is very very good. It would have been perfect if they added a forth CD with more Arias, Italian songs and Sacred Arias. BUT still this set is a great introduction to Lanza. Lanza's voice was powerful and beautiful; if you are a fan of great singing, you will love Lanza. Highlights on this CD set are; Be my Love, Because your Mine, Serenade, With a Song in My Heart, Temptation, The Lord's Prayer, Ciribirbin, O Solo Mio, Ariverducci Roma, and on and on. They are many many great songs on this set, and I highly recommend it.

every true hip hop fan should already have every eric b and rakim album or cd,but for those who don't,this is not the best compilation of their work.three classic songs are missing from this "best of" collection, "move the crowd", "as the rhyme goes on" and most noticeably,"my melody",but any eric b and rakim is better than no eric b and rakim, so for the casual hip hop fan this will suffice. if you want a much more complete complilation, go with eric b and rakim "GOLD", a double cd that contains all the great hits and some not so well known songs as well!

If you are a fan of hip-hop, you need to cop this album, period. Every single line that the R spits is venom. Every song on this album serves as the blueprint for any song in its genre. For example, "I Ain't No Joke" and "Follow the Leader" are the ultimate battle raps, whereas "In the Ghetto" contains the best rap lyrics of all time. Listen to what Rakim is saying in this song; it is surreal. On a scale of 1 to 5, the beats on this album are a 3. Rakim's lyrics are a 5, no quesiton. Again, if you are a fan of rap, you need to study each of these songs. Note: Rakim's songs after Eric B, such as the ones he did with Premier ("When I be on the Mic" and "It's been a long time") are awesome as well.

"Follow the leader" was played over the sound system between acts at the Coldplay concert in Philly last week. I thought "Man, I haven't heard Eric B. and Rakim in years." I immediately went out and bought this disc and haven't stopped listening to it yet. This is really good stuff and should be listened to by anyone who desires a full appreciation of important music of the 80s.

Early classics outshine the recent hits.......2006-09-16

DelaSoul is an important band in Hip Hop and deserving of a greatest hits compilation. I was a big fan of their first two records and I lost track of them after that. Naturally, I'm biased towards the early songs in their career. Songs like "Me, Myself, and I", "Ring Ring Ring," "Saturdays," and "Buddy" are my favorite songs. I have a tougher time with the songs from their later period. Part of it is due to my unfamiliarity with the songs, and part of it is due to all the guest rappers on their biggest hits. The beats are fine, but I want to hear DelaSoul, not a bunch of guest rappers. So many hip hop groups fall into the trap of guest rappers to help boost sales, and I guess I'm a little disappointed DelaSoul did the same. A fan of hip hop, and especially recent hip hop music, will enjoy all of this compilation. I'm satisfied only listening to their early tunes.

Solid CD.......2004-12-15

I'm happy to see that De La is getting props. I loved the songs, but "Eye Know" and "Hey No Go" has to be included with their greatest hits. Actually, any song from "3 Feet High and Rising" could be considered a greatest hit. This CD is a good starting point for newbies to the De La scene, but what we badly need from this group is an anthology. They have too many tight tracks over their career to be held on only one CD!!!

Whether you're just discovering De La Soul or you're already a fan, "Timeless" is a welcome addition to the cd collection. Not only does it include five tracks from one of the greatest hip-hop albums ever ("3 Feet High And Rising"), but these are the cool 7" and 12" versions of the songs.

Highlights include "Me Myself & I" (the radio mix which is pretty close to the album version but has a cool "breakdown" in the middle) "Ring Ring Ring" (also the radio mix which adds a few samples to the original album version) and a very cool 12" remix of "Buddy" (completely different but just as good).

For newcomers wanting to explore more than just the De La "hits," also buy "3 Feet High And Rising."

It's about time a collection of De La joints was released. Although the classic remix of Buddy is available here, I was disappointed that Itsoweezee from the Stakes Is High CD was not included. If this truly were a singles collection, that joint would be in the mix. (It was a legitimate single with a video and everything). And for the sake of arguing, joints like 4 More and The Bizness were not singles as far as I know. I won't front on The Bizness too much though, because it is a gem featuring Common right as he dropped the Sense from his name and was discovering his experimental hip-hop self. But if 4 More can be on this disc, why not Eye Know, which was a much better song and also got video play. ...Overall, without the pickiness, this is a worthwhile collection for the uninitiated De La folks. True heads know to cop the complete CDs (especially the first four).

Beautiful, Peaceful, and Calming.......2007-05-13

I bought this for my elderly father who is finding his home way too quiet after the death of my sweet mother. He is a retired Presbyterian minister and loves hymns. He is thrilled with it and listens to it every day. The quality is excellent. The music is beautiful. He likes that it is instrumental because he can listen to it and still be able to concentrate when he's on the computer.
