5 out of 5 stars bravo.......2006-01-21

this indeed is a splendid performance
Tejendra is a naturally gifted artist. He is combined with talent, hard work and an amalgam of training. He pursued music because he loved it: not because he was born into it and was beated to learn it. I agree with Usha on her views, there is a difference between a musician who is forced into music and one who is hungry for it and goes through many difficulites to acheive it.
being from India we understand indian music in a different way, just the way being japanese, a japanese can understand his or her music thoroughly not just technicaly.
This a natural phenomen. One cant argue against it
Being born into this music and learning it for 20 years, although not professionally
I must agree that Ali Akbar Khan is a great sarod player and musician, however
in my opinion as well as many others (especially of the younger generation: post 1970s) We prefer Tejendra Majumdars music.
by the way Raga records is releasing a Vasant Rai and Mahapurush Misra recording soon, i saw it on a Nikhil Banerjee album booklet

4 out of 5 stars Very nice performance, but no Ali Akbar Khan.......2005-01-28

This is indeed a very nice performance. But I wanted to rain on Deepa Mathur's parade a little. To say that Ustad Ali Akbar Khan's reputation is mostly hype (and that Tejendra Majumdar is near the pinnacle of Khan-sahib's achievements) is the height of silliness. Unfortunately, my opinion of Khan-sahib's opus is formed on the entire breadth of his life and especially the great recordings of the 1960's through the early 1980's, and I have long felt that the quality of his recordings has dropped off of late. But keep in mind that he is now 82 years old!

Look into the Signature Series, especially Vols. 1 and 3 of Ali Akbar Khan. I predict that you will also be pleasantly surprised by the incomparable tabla playing of the late Mahapurush Misra.

4 out of 5 stars like Vasant Rai.......2003-11-20

I loved this album. Tejendra is just great. I just acquired some rare recordings of the late Pandit Vasant Rai and I'm just spellbounded. He is the greatest sarod player I've ever heard. I did listen to the Khans (both Amjad and Ali Akbar) extensively but I belive that its the hype that made them famous. Tejendra's playing is very similar to Vasant Rai's. Its both technical and pianissmic. I really recommend this album.
