Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent set of modern African drumming.......2004-07-11

This set of drumming and percussive instrumentals is surprisingly compelling; I hadn't expected to be that into it, and then became transfixed as the waves of rhythm overtook me and carried me along. Five different groups perform on this well-paced collection: The El Hadj Ensemble specializes in Ghanaian and Senegalese drumming; Ipelegeng, Matodzi and the Soweto Ensemble represent South Africa and a group called African Works adds a "bush" beat to many tracks. Often these groups perform collaboratively, and the cumulative effect is quite nice. After decades of brisk, somewhat jarring drumming albums, it's nice to hear the recording methods and the presentation softening up a bit, so that the melodic and textural depths come out more clearly... There's no pop fusion going on here; the drumming is fairly pure, but it's also kind of laid back and pleasant to space out on, with plenty of stylistic variety. Very nice.

4 out of 5 stars That's Humorous- But Not Fair!.......2002-03-24

Sorry - YES- I did laugh at the earlier review that identified this CD as "Hawaiian Music" ?

But let's be fair... it overlooks the fact that Malang Mané is from Senegal ( that's West Africa...eh?)
and he plays wonderful traditional wooden balafon music in the Balanta stylee.

This music is all about interlocking polyryhthms on the Balofon - a wooden xylphone with gourd resonators - struck with mallets that have home-made rubber heads. Soft organic funky polyryhthms. Ya mon!

File this CD with your West African collection or with Gamelon music from Bali or Indonesia, or Steve Reich's interlocking drumming circa "Music for 18 Musicians", or next to Evelyn Glennie...

Or as Michael Jackson so aptly put it... "Beat IT!"

5 out of 5 stars No one can touch Makaha Sons.......1998-05-29

If you have never heard contemporary Hawaiian music you are in for a pleasant surprise. This group is the best. They will never fail to raise your mood and make you smile. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Great introduction to the world of inventive African rhythm.......1999-11-09

For anybody who is interested in the wealth of invention in traditional African music, this live album is a great addition to your world music collection. As is seemingly typical with the underlying rhythms, they are addictively basic, but constantly suprise you with using unusual instruments such as Antelope horns on 'Rwakanembe', a 22 note Mbira (an African thumb piano mounted in a calabash with bottle top resonators) on 'Kutsolo', and my favourite the African Xylophone on the uplifting 'Ithema'. All the songs have a story behind them, as described on the inside cover, making the album come to life, with tales of cockroaches, herding cows and snakes. 'Feel the Pulse of Africa' should engrave the drums in your head for days, so be warned!

            4 out of 5 stars exceptional music..........1999-11-06

I would happily give this CD five stars if only the recording quality were better. This is mesmerising, inspiring, can't-keep-still, traditional music, and I would have given a whole lot to be at the session when this CD was made. It is a necessity for any African music collection just the same. Check out their other CDs. Drums for Tomorrow has a contemporary twist, but altogether it's a successful marriage of styles.
