5 out of 5 stars Viva La France!.......2007-01-10

Thoroughly enjoyable--it is evident by listening to this EP of the live concert in Paris that JB had the time of his life performing for his beloved french audience. Very original performance of some of his best material.

1 out of 5 stars Beautifully packaged album masks Buckley's disdain for some of songs.......2006-10-12

I was not particularly aware of Buckley until I heard "Hallellujah" on a TV show. I bought this album since it had the longest version of the song on it, of any of his albums. What a disappointment. He seems to play it as a duty, showing little respect for a truly wonderful song.

He also sounded tired of some of the other songs, substituting loud sound for music.

On the other hand he covered "Grace" and "What will you say" beautifully. The album itself is a masterpiece of presentation, and I am keeping it for that reason, but will look to find a better version of him singing "Hallellujah."

3 out of 5 stars Fine live album, BUT..........2006-09-01

I grew up in NYC, and the east village was my place of choice to hang out. It was there that I frequently caught Jeff Buckley playing live, including Sin-e, well before his recordings were made; he was a charismatic performer, to say the least. I was and remain a fan of his first full LP "Grace", a pretty, if slight album that grew with each listen. His unfortunate death at such a young age is, of course, a tragic happenstance. But facts are facts; Jeff Buckley was a work in progress when he died. He had a long way to go, before he could live up to the "musical prodigy" hype that has been bestowed upon him by cultish, obsessesive teen/twentysomething girls and boys who have his posters adorning their walls. Like Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain and Tupac before him, Jeff Buckley has now joined the ranks of rock matyrdom, and is being eagerly milked by greedy record companies and sold to horny, lonely, sensitive, misunderstood girls and boys who prefer relationships with dead icons over flesh and blood. Lets face it, if Jeff Buckley looked like "Skreech" from "Saved by The Bell", would anyone other that the extremely dedicated still be talking about "Grace" today? I am not knocking the artist, mind you, only those who milk the bones (record companies and fans, alike) of an artists who simply did not live long enough to fulfill his potential. Let the man RIP, already! Incidentally, this is the best Jeff Buckley live album to get...

5 out of 5 stars R.I.P. Jeff Buckley.......2006-02-04

It has been 9 years since his death and record companies are still releasing some new stuff about him. This album is his third live album and for me it's the best.Although it was recorded from a casette found after his death, the sound is absolutely perfect and you can easily feel the atmosphere. This album was recorded on 6th and 7th of July 1995 at the Olympia Theatre in Paris in 2 soldout concerts and has 11 great songs featuring covers of the MC5's 'Kick out the jams' and Led Zeppelin's 'Kashmir'.This is precious for any Jeff Buckley fan,but if you have no idea about him this is a good place to start.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but shy of great.......2004-10-15

This was my first Buckley live CD. I'm waiting for Mysterious White Boy and when it arrives I'll definitely be comparing the two. But as for Live Buckley, this is a good representation of him. Let me review the songs:

Lover, You Should Have Come Over - Excellent. Hearing this song live is a powerful and moving experience. Great rendition. Nothing wrong here. Some great Buckley...

Dream Brother - Great version...first song he wrote, or so he says during the show.....

Eternal Life - Loud and powerful....the concert so far is going great...chugging along and each song is movingly played...

Kick Out the Jams...nothing but straight rock here...guess it's pretty much the same with any other version....So far, all these songs are heavy and hard only the way Buckley can deliver...concert is rolling smoothly.......

Lilac Wine...beautiful live version...I like it....it's not studio but hey, this is a live show...so get the studio version out of your head!

Grace -- Great live version...I like it! You will too!

That's All I Ask -- never heard this song before...like it alot, nothing complicated but pretty and vocals are angelic as only Buckley can deliver......

Kashmir - This is where the concert takes it's first nosedive..Buckley doesn't try to perform the song just have fun with it at 45rpm style...nothing memorable here and a waste of time......

Je n'en connais pas la fin - beautiful, although Buckley does stop in the middle of the tune to chat with the audience..it's a little annoying but then Buckley would do that so you gotta roll with it...it's good nonetheless, though it falls shy of great b/c I was annoyed with the chit chat during the middle of the song....

Hallelujah - The only lemon during the entire show! This rendition stinks! That's because Buckley starts paying more attention to the audience and not to play the song! He barely gets through it, laughing along the way and really giving a weak rendition of this moving piece...I don't expect the studio version per say, but to laugh through this song and get distracted by the audience, well, it's too bad.......

What Will You Say -- very cool, this track isn't from the Olympia show but is an extra track from a show he did in the French countryside somewhere...it has Middle Eastern influences and is great...

Overall, I'm surprised by how short this Olympia concert is. It's less than an hour! And he flew to Paris to perform at the Olympia for just an hour show??? Bizarre!! Makes me wonder how long he performed at other shows through his tours in other countries and in the U.S......

Anyways, I still recommend you purchase this disk but do so for $15 or less, it's not worth more than that...

4 out of 5 stars Good buy.......2006-07-31

I'd like to comment on the heck of a job the audio people did in creating this CD. They pulled the songs off of some old tapes and yet the quality is pretty good. It's awesome to hear Jeff really 'get into' the music on these songs. This CD is quite unique I'd say. Sounds like he really owned Kick Out the Jams on this version.

4 out of 5 stars To short, but incredible none the less. . ........2003-01-25

I'm Still waiting for "vancouver" and a few other songs of his to be published on cd, but until the time comes when all of Jeff's material is released, this cd in wonderful. "That's All Ill ask" is a good unrealesed song, and the versions of "dream brother" and "Eternal Life" are great. I'm dissipointed there isent a good quality live version of "Last Goodbye". The one of "Mystery White Boy" is the only bad quality recording on the entire cd.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2002-02-03

Jeff Buckley's "Live A L'Olympia" is a work of art! You can just feel the happy atmosphere in the concert, and it's like you're actually there. Jeff's Zeppelin parody is hilarious, and every song will have you either laughing or crying!
I have total respect for Mary Guibert, and for even allowing us to have this capsule of time of Jeff is too nice of her. "Live A L'Olympia" is one of my all-time favourite CD's, and you will love it too!!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful. But still leaves much to be desired........2002-01-07

The sound on this CD is not the best- it was taken from a cassette that was found among Jeff's belongings after he "left us". But as many people have pointed out, it is a BETTER recording because there is a flow to it (unlike Mystery White Boy), being that it is ONE concert rather than many put together. There aren't any new songs besides "That's All I Ask", and the duet of "What Will You Say". What one might think is a Led Zeppelin cover is just one minute of Jeff messing around, playing a segment of "Kashmir" really past and singing high-pitched. It's funny, but a small let-down. Where are the songs we haven't heard? Jeff didn't play only songs from "Grace" at his concerts. Towards the end of 1996 and up until his death, he was trying to get AWAY from "Grace". Of course I will buy anything that comes out with Jeff's name on it, but if you want to hear what they've been keeping from the fans, then take advantage of the MP3's floating around on the net while they are still there. Yeah, it's illegal, but my CD burner doesn't think so.

5 out of 5 stars Dear Mary,.......2001-12-20

Why do you promise us new recording's of your son's music, only to release the same songs yet again? We know you have in your possession countless recordings of material we have never heard, and sadly will probably never hear until you yourself are long gone. Even then you will probably have it in your will that the tapes be burned over your grave. Is this what Jeff would have wanted? I doubt it. I never knew him, but maybe you should ask his friends what they think he would have liked. Yes, the "Grace" songs are beautiful, and I will listen to them as many times as you force me to (what else have you given me to choose from?). I personally would like to know what Jeff played all those nights at Sin-E (covers, mostly....but I'm sure they are quality), and what his days in the band Gods and Monsters sounded like. Surely if Jeff was involved it couldn't have been bad. I know there are tapes of his performances in Memphis recorded days, weeks before his passing. Still, this is what we are offered, and beggers can't be choosers. This album is breathtaking. Like someone else noted, it is ONE concert instead of many concerts pieced together, and though the sound is not the absolute best, who cares? I sure don't.

5 out of 5 stars SHE'S BACK!!! And in TOP FORM!.......2004-12-17

I was one of the Petula fans who was much disappointed in her last "live" concert CD ("Sign of the Times") - I was pretty much sure the Petula "magic" that I had loved for decades had peaked & gone... I was actually a little afraid to get this CD - certainly it's the first Petula CD I've ever bought that I let sit for several days before finding the right time to play it... Then, when I DID play it? Well, all I can say is:

SHE'S BACK!!!

Man, if I sound like a school kid gushing, from this point forward, it's for good reason.

This is one recording Petula should be very proud of - one recording all of us fans should rejoice in owning. Her voice is in amazing condition - her pitch is right on - her vocal range still impressive... Her low notes are oh-so-rich & smoldering... Her top belt is still perfectly in tact... On top of it all, she sounds like she's having a blast onstage - that this is where she really wants to be, and loving every minute of it.

True - there are some songs on this CD that I'm not crazy about hearing again ("Don't Sleep in the Subway" for instance - even tho' it's one of her trademark songs), but there are PLENTY of songs that either give me goosebumps - or simply make me smile.

ALL the French songs are terrific. Petula's voice (to me, anyway) has always sounded even more beautiful when singing French, and that holds true to this recording, too. I'd read other reviewers saying that the French "Needles & Pins" was incredibly beautiful, and I found that hard to believe (never having liked the song to begin with) - BUT... THEY'RE RIGHT! "Needles & Pins" is definitive Petula. Fantastic vocals on that track.

Other favorites? The "Prends Mon Coueur" medley, the "Chanson de Gainsbourg" medley, "Look to the Rainbow" - there's plenty here to like.

Interesting to me - as much as Petula loves the dramatic songs, it's when she got back into the "Ya Ya Twist" & "Chariot" era, her voice really sparked. She may not really enjoy singing that stuff anymore, but man - NO ONE does it better than she does when it comes to singing these songs from this era. "Marin" started playing, and my partner (who had been standing, listening to this medley) started swaying to the beat. By the time Petula got into "Chariot"? We were dancing - and smiling.

What a wonderful recording - an amazing documentation of a woman eternally young and vibrant.

5 out of 5 stars AN ELECTRIFYING NIGHT TO REMEMBER.......2004-11-13

Petula Clark's first appearance at the Olympia in Paris in the late 1950s resulted in two long-term relationships - marriage to producer Claude Woolf and a love affair with the French record-buying public that eclipsed their admiration for Edith Piaf and, as evidenced by the audience reaction heard during this concert recorded in September 2003, continues to this day.

This collection includes contributions from every phase of Clark's sixty-five year career - the French pop tunes from composer Serge Gainsbourg, the mid- to late-60s international hits ("Downtown," "I Know a Place," "This is My Song," "Kiss Me Goodbye," "Don't Sleep in the Subway," "I Couldn't Live Without Your Love"), selections from her films "Finian's Rainbow" and "Goodbye, Mr. Chips," and the stage productions in which she starred - "Blood Brothers" and "Sunset Boulevard" - and one in which she didn't - a rousing rendition of "Vivre" from "Notre Dame de Paris."

The CD opens and closes with two compositions by Clark herself - "I'm Not Afraid," in which she explains how singing became a form of self-expression that overcame her shyness, and a bonus track - a studio recording of "Starting All Over Again," inspired by the events of 9/11.

Kenny Clayton, her longtime musical director, deserves special mention for his vibrant arrangements, especially those that infuse the old hits with exciting new life.

Clark's voice is as strong and rich as it was forty years ago, when "Downtown" first hit pop charts worldwide - her enunciation is so perfect you can hear her dot her "i"s and cross her "t"s, and she not only hits all the high notes, but holds them for several measures as well. It's obvious that her dynamic performance here thoroughly captivated the sell-out Olympia crowd, as it will anyone who invests in this recording of that magical night.

4 out of 5 stars "beautiful lady & wonderful entertainer ~ Petula Clark".......2004-11-12

Silva America presents "Petula Clark:Live at the Paris Olympia", featuring many of her pop, rock and musicals from stage and films...interpretation is the name of the game with Petula...she is right on with all her cues...she is truly amazing at the young age of seventy.

Stand outs, and there are many ~ "LOOK TO THE RAINBOW (from Finian's Rainbow)", "DON'T SLEEP IN THE SUBWAY", "THIS IS MY SONG", "TELL ME IT'S NOT TRUE" (from Blood Brothers)", "I KNOW A PLACE", the audience is completely engulfed with this one, "SIGN OF THE TIMES", she rocks the place and leaves the crowd wanting more, "DOWNTOWN", the song that started it all, and the audience joins in with the lyrics, "KISS ME GOODBYE", tender loving melody with touching interwoven moments, "STARTING ALL OVER AGAIN" (studio version), beautiful arrangement and Petula's voice is still in great shape...her delivery is on perfect pitch...just the way we like 'em!

Band Personnell:
Ian Gillan - Vocals
Steve Morse - Guitars
Roger Glover - Bass
Ian Paice - Drums
Jon Lord - Organs and Keyboards

This album is G-R-E-A-T, Steve shows how great he tackles the classic riffs by Blackmore, Gillan is somethimes lacking but he's got strenght and hit the notes great, this live album is the best since "Made in Japan", buy it, highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars I would give it a million Star !!!.......2006-05-31

This is incredable... cant say more!!! just close ur eyes and buy it... I wish I have this Live on DVD as well... and I wish I (with my hubby) attend a DP Live .. this is my dream

5 out of 5 stars Made In Paris.......2006-03-21

Better than Made In Japan by any measure. Brilliant, seasoned, virtuoso musicians playing as a tight, cohesive unit. No noodling or other time wasting as on Made In Japan and other DP live recordings of that era.

The brilliant Morse/Lord duels rank among the best of the best; in fact any of the solos by these two rank among the best of the best. Morse breathed new life and enthusiasm into a great but declining band, prompting the attainment of new artistic heights.

5 out of 5 stars This one brought me back.......2004-05-22

I had pretty much given up on deep Purple after the House of Blue Light and a very quick listen to Purpendicular but something made me check this album out. The opening track is Fireball and I half expected it to be some tired old rockers trotting out a mediocre version. Whoa Nelly! Was I wrong. This track and every other one is blistering! The band absolutely cooks on this album and its so cool having a complete, uninterrupted live show, in the correct order and surprise, surprise a horn section. After this I went out and bought every DP album I'd missed, saw the band at every opportunity, and was first in line for new releases. They have restored my faith and I promise you they do not disappoint, live or on record now. The only explanation I can give is Steve Morse. We owe him not just for his playing but for breathing new life into a band that was in danger of dying out due to internal conflict. Great sound and mix on this record too. So much tighter and better sounding than Nobody's Perfect. You can tell they were having fun. Get it!

3 out of 5 stars Too long, too many mediocre songs.......2003-08-11

There are some fine songs on this double live CD, but almost all of them (with the exception of the grand "Perfect Strangers") are from Deep Purple's seventies repertoire.
The newer stuff mainly serves one purpose: to remind the listener how inferior Deep Purple's eighties and nineties releases were compared to "Machine Head" and "Fireball".

Ian Gillan and the band perform superbly on "When A Blind Man Cries", the album's best cut, and there are a handful of other fine moments as well (most notably "Highway Star"), but there is also a lot of mediocrity.
If "Live At The Olympia" had been trimmed down to a single CD, it could have been a great album. As it is, it is a good album for serious fans, but more casual ones may not make it through disc I, and are much better served by sticking with "Made In Japan".

4 out of 5 stars Quite a Treat for the Monk Fan.......2005-02-02

Disc 1 (a cd) of this 2-disc set was recorded in Paris on 3/7/65. Disc 2 (a dvd) was recorded in Oslo, Norway on 4/15/66. Both discs are the classic Monk (piano), Rouse (tenor saxophone), Gales (bass) and Riley (drums) band.

I see from previous reviews that some people love this one and some seem to dislike it. I am surprised there are any Monk fans who don't like this! I was apprehensive at first. I was thinking okay a new release from this "Monk family vault" thing, this could just be a scheme to make some money off of a few lousy recordings that are best used for collecting dust. I was wrong! I think this set is great. I mean, what is not to love? I'm still not much for the two solo Monk tracks (Body and Soul, and April in Paris), but so what? That's 2 tracks. On the first disc alone you're treated to killer performances of I Mean You, Well You Needn't, Bright Mississippi and Epistrophy. As for the sound, again, I'm not sure what the previous complaints are about. For the first minute or two on Rhythm-A-Ning yes, Monk's piano is quieter, but then it seems to come up and the whole mix levels out and from there on out this disc sounds excellent. Seriously, a few minutes into this disc and all my initial "quality" fears were wiped away.

The band is having a blast here... again, Monk is the master accompanist... his jagged bounce... that off-kilter swing of his piano just frames Charlie Rouse perfectly. When these two really get it going on (and they do really get it going on quite often here), it is a true joy to behold. As I've said in previous Monk reviews, there was a long time where I didn't like Rouse but I don't know what I was thinking back then. He is absolutely great. He's grown into one of my favorite tenor players.

This whole band just consistently knocks me out on this set. When people think of Monk it seems that he is usually all they think about. It's not often you hear people talk about Rouse, Gales and Riley but these 3 guys deserve all the credit in the world. They swing like crazy, and were a masterful ensemble at navigating the idiosyncratic waters of Monk's compositions.

As for the dvd, it's more of the same, but not as long as the cd. Again, the sound is fine here. I'm not sure how come people aren't hearing the bass or this, that, and the other thing. I've had no problems with any of this. I was thinking the DVD might be lame. Some sort of fuzzy picture that was filmed from 100 feet away and synched up to some ho-hum sound, but it isn't at all. Very nice and close black-and-white footage with sound that is more-or-less exactly the same as the quality of sound on the cd. The dvd performances are of Lulu's Back in Town, Blue Monk, and 'Round Midnight.

I've had this less than a month but I've been all over it ever since I bought it. I'm a satisfied customer and that's all there is to it. I'd think this set would be treasured by any and all Monk fans (or at least fans of this band/era of Monk's). Now I just need to get the 2nd disc in this series, Monk Around the World.

4 out of 5 stars you haven't seen Monk until you've seen him.......2004-04-14

Live recordings of "The Rouse Quartet" are sometimes gems but not particularly rare ones, and overall this seems to be pretty representative. A really cookin' "Rhythm-a-Ning" and an above average "I Mean You" are the highlights. "Well You Needn't" kind of drags on, and the solo performance of "April in Paris" is only about 1:20 long.

The sound is OK- there are some moments when Rouse is off-mike, and the bass ranges from too loud to where did it go?. Monk is Monk and always worth hearing, but this would probably be a bit of a disappointment EXCEPT...

...for the bonus DVD. The Quartet performs "Lulu's Back in Town", "Blue Monk" and "'Round Midnite" (I think) on stage in an empty theatre in Oslo. You at home supply your own audience noises. There was a definite visual dimension to a Monk performance, and this film fills you in on the convoluted piano fingering, feet shuffling and dancing that audio CDs can't. It's also instructive how few drums a really good drummer, (in this case Ben Riley), needs to sound good. The DVD video and audio quality are both fine.

Considering what you get for the price, I'd say buy buy buy!

EDIT: I recently discovered that the performances of Rhythm-a-Ning, I Mean You, April In Paris, and Body and Soul on the CD part of this set are identical to those on Disc 14 of the complete Riverside Monk set, and I would assume to those on the OJC CD Monk in France. Riverside has these as being recorded in April 1961.

How or why this happened, I don't know, but it is interesting.

4 out of 5 stars Energetic live performance with a bonus DVD.......2004-02-28

The cd of the Paris performance is wonderful . Great sound quality and Monk and the Quartet really cook on a number of his classics. The included DVD of the Oslo concert is a bit less energetic and the sound quality is not quite as good BUT how many chances to we get to see Monk perform these tunes. The inclusion of the DVD really makes this a bargain and well worth picking up. I would not consider this one of Monk's seminal recordings so I only gave it 4 stars but for Monkophiles it's a must own and for those who are curious this gives you a chance to hear AND see the man perform.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning performance in OSLO (Part I of a 2 part review)........2003-12-01

This is part one, of a two part review; which will be written, after I've listened to the "audio" portion of this two disc set.
(I listened/watched the "Oslo" part of this set.) The three song performance was fairly clear [someone did a great job at transferring the video to disc, and the audio too]. The group did a nice series of solos, as Monk was generous in allowing other members to shine in their performances. If the "Paris" disc is
as great as this one (which I expect it will be) it will be well worth the money. [One question, I wonder if I played a dvd on a cd player, would I get the "audio" portion only.]

Glide your mouse to the add to shopping cart icon asap! This cd is worth it just for the live version of What'd I say! It starts out with Ray fumbling around on the keyboard as if he is making mistakes when in reality we all know he never made a mistake because he is the high priest of soul and a musical genius. Whoops, I got carried away! After his entertaining run up to the song he flows into the begining of What'd I say and the crowd goes nuts. It gives me goosebumps everytime I here it. It is amazing to hear the 70 year old Charles belt out this song with so much energy. The reason I give the album 4 stars is because he skips alot of the lyrics while singing the songs. I don't know if its due to his age or just because he felt like doin it that way. Buy the album its Ray Charles for cryin out loud, besides what else is out there nowadays except a bunch of crap music!

4 out of 5 stars Ages Just Like Wine.......2006-04-18

This live album is from the year 2000 and that's the reason I bought it...I didn't want a live Ray Charles album from the 50's or 60's...but sometime in his older and maturer days. And that's what you get here.

The best part about this cd is it's simplicity and straightforwardness. It's Ray Charles and vocals and piano, a drummer, bass player and guitar player. They are the Ray Charles Trio. What you get is a complete, smooth, fresh and wonderfully drippingly jazzified 70 minutes of music.

Charles' voice is beautifully rough and older which adds a new dimension to the songs and his keyboard work is amazing...wonderful solos that wail through your speakers.

My only complaint was that the concert was longer...and had more hits like "Night Time Is the Right Time" and "Hit The Road Jack" (i don't know if he played that song as frequent in his older days). Still, this CD is beautiful. I didn't pay $30 but paid $12 through a private seller here on Amazon. I dunno if I'd pay $30 for it...but it's a great cd.

If you love jazz and blues---LIVE...then get this cd!
