The Caribbean is home to a string of tourism-friendly island nations and some of the world's most amazing music. Irresistible dance music.......2001-06-21

This is a wonderful album that will put you in a dancing mood. An instant pick-u-up. This is zouk, soca and reggae music from Martinique, Barbados, Haiti and Jamaica. This album, like most of the Putumayo releases, not only has well known artists such as Bunny Wailer and Arrow, but also little known artists as well. It is a great place to begin for someone who wishes to explore Caribbean music. Every song on here is irresistible and will make you wish you were in the Caribbean. The 15 page booklet contains information on each artist and the song they perform.

This was one of three steel drum CD's purchased recently, and was the best of all. Great sounds...clear with good acoustics. Sounds really mellow coming from the speakers in our back yard paradise. Very authentic Caribbean sound. Just what we were looking for to give our outdoor entertaining a fun atmosphere.

I'm on my second copy of this cd... it is still my favorite of any steelpan cd I have. It strikes just the right balance between fun and relaxing, and it makes the time between cruises go by much faster. :-)

This CD is fabulous.......2001-11-06

I am a longtime listener of Reggae music and I say without reservation or fear of contradiction that this is without a doubt one of the best Reggae albums ever made. The musicianship is first rate(no drum machines)and Mr. Hammonds excellent songwriting and unique vocal style really does justice to the material. Since I purchased the album I have listened to it every day, and continue to be amazed. I recommend this album highly. You will not be disappointed, buy one, and then buy another for a friend.

This Soca CD is a must for your collection. From beginning to the end you will be dancing nonstop. Some of my favorites are "Happy" "Bacchanal In The City" "Dollar Wine" "Soca Butterfly" and "Ragga Ragga" I will guarantee you that this CD will get your body moving to the Soca beat, if not you better check your pulse to see if your alive.

This CD has the best of Soca on it. It is great for someone who wants a sampler of some of the hottest Soca music. If you could only buy 1 cd with Soca music, then this would be the better choice. I am VERY pleased with it.

This ablum is OUTSTANDING. Jerico gets you moving and you dont stop till the last song. All of the songs are classics in showing not only Kitch's writing and arranging skill but also the evolution of early calypso, a few are truly iconic of Kitch's skill jerico, pan in A minor, pan in harmony, fever, sugar bum bum, symphony in G, the symptons of carnival, the bees melody, give me the ting, the spirit and tribute to spree simon.

I remember Kitch's music as a child in the caribbean.I am now completely in awe his talent and of this compilation. (especially Vol.3). It is wonderful uptempo music. Like they say in the Caribbean "yu got to wine yu waist!" no question whatsoever!. If you love good Jump-up music this is the one for you. (Definitely Not the wave yu hand/flag/rag nonsense of today)

The earlier volumes (1 and 2) were a little bit before my time. but Vol 3 is absolutely magnificent with more modern accompaniment. Nevertheless it is interesting to see how his music evolved over the years. My three year old daughter and I are dancing to this CD all the time! She loves it.

This is some of the best arranged calypso music ever made, no wonder the Steel-pan men love it so!

Kitch you are so missed. Each song on the CD is timeless.Thank you for still bringing joy to the world even after you're gone!

Byron Lee, the driving force behind Jamaica's Calypso-soca scene, is also the brains behind that island's rapidly expanding carnival celebration. Years ago he threw a little fete on the Kingston campus of the University of the West Indies; today the several-weeks-long event features a full pantheon of Caribbean Calypso and soca stars, a tentative hybrid called "soggae," as well as concerts headlined by Jamaican vintage artists, the greats of ska, rock steady, and early reggae. The dizzying array of events, parties, parades, and marches draws celebrants from all over the world, including other islands, especially Trinidadians, who come not only to quench an insatiable party thirst but to cast a nervous eye on the competition. For this set, Lee and his band re-create the unique flavor of Jamaican carnival with their interpretations of hits by leading exponents like Trinidad's David Rudder and Machel Montano. This is a great SOCA CD. Byron Lee's band covers music by other SOCA artists, mostly from Trinidad. His version of High Mas by David Rudder is even better than the original!

Hot Sweet Soca.......2005-07-09

This CD is rarely out of my car's CD player. I can't seem to get enough of it. When I first listened to the CD, I wasn't terribly impressed. A couple of songs caught my attention, but I wasn't overwhelmed. Knowing familiarity can increase my pleasure with music, I thought I'd listen a couple more times. UH OH!!! I got hooked and now can't get enough of cuts 4, 7, and 10. (Run the Vampire, Sticks and Stones, and the VERY BEST is Jumbie) Every friend I've played it for has since bought a copy.

The Rough Guide series is generally an outstanding way to learn about a new genre by sampling tracks of the highest musicianship.

Nothing against Calypso and Soca- these are both dynamic and expressive genres. But this compilation reflects the modern trend towards downsized horn sections replaced by synthesizers. The problem with synthesized horn sections- and I think this is beyond just a matter of taste- is that the authenticity of the sound is limited by the current state of the art technology. So rather than sounding timeless, this music is dated by its technology. Rawness and energy are lacking on this compilation, which could best be described as cheesy.

This is a great intro to some great music. Rough Guide makes wonderful travel guides, and their foray into music upholds the same high standards. There are some real stand-outs on this collection, and overall it's a very nice introduction to this infectious music. An ultimate party album!

If SKA ever had a place in the ultimate bachelor pad...this CD carved that place out. While this is certainly not core SKA for the baldies to bounce around too, it is enjoyable. Some great surprises on the CD are the cover of "Express yourself" and Toots singing on "She Will Never Let Me Down". Eric "Monty" Morris makes a bunch of appearances...all in all, worth the money I spent (Heck, their version of "Nice Time is almost as good as P. Dillon's and Jamaica Ska is worth the dough on it's own).
Can't claim to know the history of the band, but I imagine them playing in matching white dinner jackets for tourists (a testament to how polished they are). While not as inspiring as Jimmy Cliff belting out "Dearest Beverly" in an ice-cream parlor, as I said, still a great way to start the day. If you crave some instrumental Ska with nice production quality and a little polish- this is for you (Check out the Tommy McCook album "Real Cool" as well- )
