Josh Groban in Concert has all the ingredients to be a long-running PBS staple: a young (21), good-looking performer with a golden voice; songs in Italian and Spanish for the crossover crowd (i.e., Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman) and pop and movie songs for the mainstream; guest stars galore (David Foster, John Williams, Angie Stone, Andrea Corr, Lili Haydn); a large orchestra; and striking but not obtrusive visual effects. The centerpiece of this DVD-CD combo (also available in a DVD keepcase) is the 80-minute concert DVD, filmed in Pasadena in October 2002 and featuring numerous songs from Groban's debut CD, including "You're Still You," which catapulted him into stardom when he sang it on TV's Ally McBeal. There are also two new songs--the ballad "Broken Vow," with Groban accompanied by Foster, and "For Always," with the orchestra conducted by John Williams, who wrote the song for the Steven Spielberg film A.I..

The 37-minute CD offers seven songs performed in the concert (including the two not on the previous CD, "Broken Vow" and "For Always"), plus "O Holy Night." The DVD has excellent picture and sound (PCM stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1, and DTS), interviews, and backstage footage, and the combination with the CD is an excellent value. Groban's fans, of course, will consider it a treasure at any price. --David Horiuchi

In case you couldn't go to the concert . . . buy this CD/DVD set. This is a good overall product. The DVD is seamlessly pieced together from three concerts. The concerts were awesome due to the lights, musicians, song introductions, and of course - Josh's voice, presence, and energy.

5 out of 5 stars Young Josh .......2007-04-12

This cd and dvd collection is valuable to anyone collecting Josh Groban music. The dvd is nicely done and gives a little insight into his family (parents and younger brother) with the special features. Nice, clean, family entertainment which is such a rarity nowadays. This young man's voice is exceptional - God has truly blessed him with such a voice, and to see him perform is a gift as well. My family truly enjoyed this bonus.

I ordered this concert DVD/CD for my Mom who is a new fan of Josh Grobin's and she loved both the concert footage and the songs on the DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic concert....Josh Grobin is outstanding!.......2007-02-22

I have been a Josh Grobin fan since I heard "You Lift Me Up", and I have not been dissapointed with his CD's ever since. I was excited when I got this DVD and it definitely did not dissapoint. He chooses his songs wisely and each song in this concert is full of emotion and depth. The CD compliments the DVD well and is always a favorite. From "Broken Vow" to "Oh Holy Night" each song is sung by this master singer.

Highly Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars RIP, BEVERLY SILLS 1929-2007.......2007-07-03

The great American diva's passing was announced today.

This wonderful CD set is a perfect compilation of her art as can be found anywhere. Her finest roles and performances are captured here, most of them derived from the Westminster/Audio Treasury recordings from her prime. Listening to them again demonstrates to me why she was so special, and such an inspiration to music lovers everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars Brava Sills!.......2007-02-02

A very nice compilation of Sillsiana. The different cuts on this CD provide a nice illustration of her work. Let me briefly describe my response to a sampling of the works on this CD:

Bellini, I Puritani, "Son vergin vezzosa." Wonderful. Sutherland owns this--but so does Beverly Sills. Contemporary sopranos such as Netrebko and Gruberova have also sung this on their respective CDs, and while their product is nice, it simply does not compare. Sills is remarkably agile with her voice; the trills are well done; she cleanly hits high notes; the overall effect can only be described as wonderful.

Bellini, Norma, "Mira, o Norma". This is smoothly sung and very melodic. The technique that she exhibits does not overwhelm the music.

Rosini, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, "Contro un cor che accende amore." Again, her agile voice is well deployed. The florid singing is well done.

Donizetti, Roberto Devereaux, "Che m'apporti." Her clean, light voice matches well with this aria. Smoothly sung. Her "Quel sangue versato al cielo s'innalza," which follows, is well done. High notes cleanly hit, a smooth line.

Verdi, La Traviata, "E strano. . . .Sempre libera." Again, what agility! In "Sempre libera," she reveals a rich voice and, again, wonderful agility. This is an animated version of one of Verdi's showcase pieces.

Lehar, Giudetta. "Meine Lippen." A lot of fun! This is smoothly sung.

In the final analysis, this is a nice potpourri of Beverly Sills' repertoire. Those not familiar with her work will find this a nice entree to her oeuvre; those familiar with her will find this a good compilation.

This recording is another in an all too small CD collection of Sills recordings. I eagerly await more.

5 out of 5 stars The Great American Soprano.......2005-10-01

This is a great collecition featuring arias from the Classical and Romantic periods. Fabulous!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Woman.......2005-08-05

I would have to say that when I first heard Beverly Sills sing, I was entranced. I couldn't take my eyes off of her and I became angry at any rustling around me, because I was afraid I would miss one note. It was so addictive....that is what she is....addictive! A c.d. will never properly capture her style. She is an amazing leader in opera, taking it into a new frontier and I believe this c.d. showcases that.

Album Description

The Definitive Portrait Of A Rock 'N' Roll Genius!

Roky Erickson is one of the most influential cult artists of all time. His work with the '60s Texas group The 13th Floor Elevators bridged garage rock and psychedelia, and cast a long shadow over the punk and post-punk movements. After a 1969 drug bust, the already mentally fragile Roky chose a stay in a mental institution instead of doing jail time, but was subjected to electroshock therapy and emerged in a highly unstable condition. He continued to write brilliant, chilling songs throughout the '70s and '80s, and the cult around him grew. In 1990 he was honored with an acclaimed tribute album, Where the Pyramid Meets the Eye, featuring R.E.M., ZZ Top, and Primal Scream. This led to a revival of his fortunes, which included new releases made in conjunction with Charlie Sexton and Gibby Haynes of the Butthole Surfers.

The 2-CD set I Have Always Been Here Before: The Roky Erickson Anthology is the only release to cover his entire 40-year career, making it the definitive Roky Erickson collection.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The perfect entry into Roky.......2007-02-14

Anthologies of any sort are fraught with peril for those both familiar or unfamiliar with an artist or genre. Regardless of the space allowed, there will likely always been those who complain about the inclusions and omissions and their impact on the representation. This risk will be often exacerbated by the breadth and depth of whatever is being anthologized. Nowhere is this more the case than in music. For those artists whose musical taste and styles are exploratory or progressive, the likelihood of alienation is omnipresent for both commercial releases and anthological works.

I Have Always Been Here Before: The Roky Erickson Anthology manages to avoid those pitfalls. It presents both a tribute and a guide to the works and, by implication, the life of Roger Kynard (Roky) Erickson. The 43 song 2 CD package - with a 30 page narrative booklet - covers Roky's musical history from its garage rock roots with The Spades in 1965 to material from an album in 1995. In the sweep of songs - all but one at least co-authored by Erickson - we are presented with a wide range of musical styles but more so, we are presented with lyrics.

It is the words that are - if anything can be - the key to Rocky Erickson and his enduring popularity. The man has the capability to pull the most hard-wrenching emotions out of himself and the listener, exposing vulnerabilities, wishes, hopes, loves and fears. Whether garbed in the West Texas rockabilly tones of Buddy Holly (Starry Eyes) or raucous blues (Don't Shake Me Lucifer) or the most precious and loving ballad (I Don't Love You Yet), it is the message that Roky Erickson is sending that is of the greatest importance. These are stories about life and humanity; stories that are long on emotion and substance; songs that - if you listen carefully enough - mimic all that any of us think and feel.

He does this - as mentioned - in a variety of styles that is intellectually vertiginous and counter-intuitive. You will find yourself reaching for the discography often to try and understand whether the material you are hearing is leading-edge or derivative (it's the former!). There are punk-like descending chord cascades presented softly - almost delicately. Other songs seem to pre-sage modern country, though with lyrics more usually found in death-metal.

These internal musical conflicts mirror what was likely the internal conflict in the man himself. Arrested in 1969 for marijuana possession - allegedly for one joint - Rocky was convinced to plead insanity and spent three years in an asylum where he was subjected to shock treatment and psychotropic drugs. Whether this abuse caused his mental instability or heightened an existing condition if unknown and probably irrelevant. The long and short of the story is that Roky spent the next 30 odd years in an emotional maelstrom that saw him unable to care for himself, with episodes in and out of treatment centers and jails, being subjected to the usual sort of misconduct from music industry executives, and generally taken advantage if by all and sundry. The new century saw a positive swing in Roky's fortunes as friends and family were finally able to obtain a legal guardianship that established a trust to care for him and that resulted in the production of this album.

But, do not buy this out of sympathy. Buy it for the beauty and depth and flavor of the music generated by this remarkable artist.

5 out of 5 stars Roky Erickson-'I Have Always Been There Before:The Roky Erickson Anthology' (Shout Factory).......2007-01-26

Nicely assembled 2-CD,43 track audio diary (sort to speak)of the former 13th Floor Elevator's vocalist repertoire. If you're a fan of '60's psych like myself, then this is an absolute must-have. Starts off with Erickson's 1965 pre-13th Floor single, performed by his early band The Spades, "We Sell Soul". Plus, we get some 13th Floor gems like "You're Gonna Miss Me", "Fire Engine", "Splash" and several others. Then there's plenty of material that I'm hearing for the very first time, cuts from Roky Erickson & The Aliens that are semi-impressive like "Mine Mine Mind", the rocking "Red Temple Prayer", "I Think Up Demons" and "Creature Of Atom Brain". Remember, there was a career 'still-happening' for Roky Erickson after 13th Floor Elevators disbanded. Essential.

5 out of 5 stars Interested in Roky? Buy this one........2006-01-15

Good overview of his career and I think the tracks, which range from Dylan like to better than the Doors, are all good, plus Roky actually gets paid or this one.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, The Tribute Roky Deserves.......2005-11-10

Pop Kulcher Review: As far as greatest hits collections go, it's hard to imagine one more necessary and long-awaited than I Have Always Been Here Before. I mean, seriously, just last week I saw The Essential Cyndi Lauper. The lady produced pretty much nothing I'd call "Essential," much less an entire disc's worth. Sure, "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" has some fond memories, plus there was that one good song about female masturbation ("She Bop"), and... well, I think that's it. Yet she gets an entry in the Essential [sic] series? Good Lord, talk about scraping the very bottom of the barrel. Yet countless legends of the past four decades continue to wallow in obscurity. But I digress.

Roky, contrary to what you may have heard, is not God. No, that privilege is reserved for Syd Barrett. Nonetheless, on the scale of deranged acid casualties, Roky still ranks fairly high. You know the drill -- started with psychedelic garage band the 13th Floor Elevators, left after a few albums due to mental illness and/or drug abuse, spent the 70's and 80's intermittently releasing albums and singles on his own and with various backing bands, ranging from pretty acoustic ballads to straight 50-style retro kitsch to schizoid rave-ups about Satan. The usual thing. And it's all here. Unless you're a serious Roky fanatic, pretty much all the Roky you need can be found on these two discs. The 13th Floor Elevator stuff has never sounded better -- not exactly the standard bearer of high fidelity, but far superior to any other versions I've heard. Now, personally, I've always found them a bit overrated -- a few essential tracks worth of a Nuggets box set, but less psychedelic and experimental than their peers -- so for me this does a fairly decent job of cobbling together their high points. (Of course, if they did as nice a job remastering their albums, I'd probably go get 'em.) After that it's a mixed bag. The key Roky tracks are here, from the timeless beauty of "Starry Eyes" (damn, that's a great song) to the key rave-ups "Don't Slander Me" and "Don't Shake Me Lucifer" to one of my personal faves, "If You Have Ghosts." Anyway, even if you're like me and find the Erickson legend slightly more interesting than the music itself, this is a pretty amazing collection. Even after skipping through some of the meandering solo tracks, there's plenty of great music here for your money (maybe "I Walked With A Zombie" should have made the cut, or an additional version of "Starry Eyes," but that's really about it). Go get it.

5 out of 5 stars Roky Love forever!.......2005-10-09

this beautifully designed deluxe 2cd set fully captures the spirit of the great Roky Erikson; a loveable and hugely influential singer/songwriter whose tunes don't just stradle the line between garage rock, folk, and psychadelic blues rock, they break down those lines to create a wholly pure and unique sound.

beginning with the first single w/ his first band, The Spades, "We Sell Soul" revels in it's own primitive simplicity and has such a spark burning under it's surface that the listener can't help but stay tuned in. every music fan with the slightest interest in garage rock or psychadelic music knows of the legendary 13th Floor Elevators and ten tracks from that band are represented here with my personal favorites being furious storm of "You're Gonna Miss Me," the controlled groove of "Slip Inside This House," and the heartwarming folk of "I Had To Tell You."

i think it's fairly safe to assume that most of the casual fans have failed to explore Roky's solo efforts and other bands that he was a part of after the demise of The 13th Floor Elevators. confusingly monikered bands like Roky Erikson & Bleib Alien, and Roky Erikson & Evil Hook Wildlife E.T. all share the same adventerous spirit of Roky's 60's glory days, but these later recordings reveal much more darkness and a fascination with occult magick and various monsters and demons.

for example, the spooky rock and roll of "I Think Up Demons" where amidst whirling reverb and a fiery guitar line, Roky lists different demonic figure's characteristics that he has created...almost like gifts for friends. the melody is so strong and solid that it actually doesn't seem like an unusual lyrical idea. mostly due to the fact, that Roky makes us feel comfortable in his strange and eccentric world. things eventually drop into bad B-movie territory; as on "Creature With The Atop Brain" which utilizes a dialogue of a news report warning viewers to be on the lookout. it could come accross as terribly hokey to some listeners, but i find it part of the Erikson charm and it makes me crack a smile.

with all the goofy creatures running around in Roky's brain (or his recording studio), there's still plenty of time for a love song and "Starry Eyes" is a stunningly beautiful one in particular. drifting along the lines of a country rock song, it's simple lyrics and beautifully catchy melody get stuck in my head for days and it quickly became not just one of my favorite Roky Erikson songs; but one of my favorite songs of all time!

a few more quick favorites: the blues rock blast of "The Beast," the creepy and intense stomp of "Bloody Hammer," the jagged (almost post-punk) rythyms of "Click Your Fingers Applauding The Play," and the heartbreaking tender touch of "You Don't Love Me Yet" and "Nothing In Return." wow. i could literally go on forever about every song on this compilation.

the songs on I Have Always Been Here Before display such a huge talent and an even larger amount of heart; it's sad to think that one day Roky Erikson will not be with us any more...and he's right...we are gonna miss him.

The magical triad behind Rushmore's spunky, starry-eyed soundtrack--music supervisor Randall Poster, composer Mark Mothersbaugh, and director Wes Anderson--leaps forward a decade from that beloved soundtrack's '60s gems, in the process adopting a more pensive feel for The Royal Tenenbaums' musical backdrop. It may lack the euphoric sing-along feel of, say, Creation's "Makin' Time," but the rock and folk tracks here perfectly match the film's crumbling characters and their dilapidated relationships. The Ramones' "Judy Is a Punk" is a burst of nostalgic rebellion but surely causes a sad twinge in light of Joey Ramone's untimely death in 2001; gloom-folker Nick Drake's "Fly" and Elliott Smith's excellently depressing "Needle in the Hay"--which is used to chilling effect during a wrist-slashing scene--further deepen the dark thread running through Tenenbaums. But those who prefer the sunny disposition of Rushmore will be thrilled by the calming concoctions of Mothersbaugh, who heralds the coming of a new scene with graceful woodwind/string parts ("Scrapping and Yelling") and playful sitar pieces ("Pagoda's Theme"). Throw in the Clash's squalling "Police & Thieves" and the Velvet Underground's petal-soft "Stephanie Says" and you've got another winning soundtrack from the film biz's most in-tune music lovers. Tenenbaum or not, you can go home again. --Kristy Martin

4 out of 5 stars Great easy listenening .......2007-02-02

I like this soundtrack because its very laid back. Enjoyable songs that help you relax.

4 out of 5 stars Help trying to figure out the title of a song.......2006-04-17

Hey, maybe you guys can help me, does anyone know the title of the song playing on a radio while owen wilson is getting high (or preparing to do so) with his friends and his dad and brother step in and tell him they want to help him. I really love that song and i have no idea what the title is

4 out of 5 stars omitted song.......2006-02-01

For anyone interested, one song which was omitted from the soundtract which has not been mentioned is:

Emitt Rhodes - Lullabye

A beautiful track played in the scence where Royal is lying in his bed sucking down a shake and reading a book when Chas say "lights out old man" and switchs off the light. One of my fav songs in the movie along side the rolling stones - she smiled sweetly. sadly both songs were omitted but still a beautiful soundtrack.

4 out of 5 stars Where's Van Morrison?!.......2005-03-16

This is a near-perfect collection of 60's and 70's pop and folk. The sad but hopeful vibe of the songs fits the movie's tone perfectly and you can't really agrue with songs like "Stephanie Says." it's also nice to hear the two Nico cuts since Nico's solo work really doesn't get the acclaim it deserves these days. My problem with this album is that it favors symphonic songs from the film instead of pop songs also used in it such as "Ruby Tuesday" and Van Morrison's "Everyone." I'm really bummed about the exclusion of "Everyone" because i thought it closed the movie so well. They should have released the score and the soundtrack separately so all these great songs could be included.

1 out of 5 stars The Royal Tenenbaums Soundtrack.......2005-03-14

The Collector's Edition Soundtrack leaves out two great Rolling Stones' tunes She Smiled Sweetly & Ruby Tuesday. Also left to the winds is John Lennon's Look at Me, the Clash's Rock the Kazbah. The First Edition leaves a few tunes off too but it is a far better Soundtrack. Puckstar

Based on Nicholas Sparks' novel, director Nick Cassavetes film spins the bittersweet tale of a 60-year romance, as seen from the polar perspectives of its promising youth and the travails of an old age cursed by Alzheimer's. Its soundtrack effectively echoes those polar dramatic concerns, with composer Aaron Zigler's gentle orchestral score largely giving voice to the character's melancholy present, while a rich, well-chosen slate of vintage material by Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller imparts a restless energy to their youth. There's a certain schmaltz to much of Zigman's work here, yet cues like "House Blues/The Porch Dance.." and "Noah's Journey" argue he's achieved something more elusive than mere melodramatic wallpaper with the deceivingly difficult task at hand; it can't be easy to have your work seasoned with the likes of Ellington's sassy "Alabamy Home" and Goodman's still-vibrant "One O'Clock Jump." Sharply contrasting versions of "I'll Be Seeing You" by Holiday and Jimmy Durante bookend the soundtrack, perfectly evoking the story's alternating shades of hope and fading nostalgia and framing Zigman's understated work in the bargain. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

Based on the best selling novel by Nicholas Sparks ("A Walk To Remember", "Message In A Bottle"), "The Notebook" is the story of Noah and Allie, teenage lovers torn apart by WWII and Allie's parents' demands to marry a respectable lawyer. After 14 years apart, they meet again and rekindle their true love. Starring Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams, James Garner, and Gena Rowlands. The soundtrack is a propelling force. In addition to classic WWII era pieces, Aaron Zigman's score suites enhance the record with beautifully dramatic themes. Score performed by the Hollywood Studio Symphony.

5 out of 5 stars Touching.......2007-07-04

There isn't much I can say about this beautiful movie, except that it was so touching!
It say's go for the "true love", settle for nothing else no matter what may be in store, because love that is "true" and as beautiful as their's was, is a rare thing!
I absolutely loved the ending.
I also loved that a movie CAN be truly wonderful, beautiful and touching WITHOUT grafic "sex scenes!" Also sadly a rare thing in movies today.

Ever seen "Hanover Street?" Equally beautiful. No SEX scenes either!

5 out of 5 stars Pays music a complement. I love the classical pieces!.......2007-05-27

I do not have the soundtrack to The Notebook, but I do have the movie itself. Having said that, every song is wonderful. Some music carries with it, a wealth of emotion and a sense of timelessness. I love all of the classical pieces , perhaps the best, in this particular movie. Classical has never been my speed when it comes down to music, but something about this movie's classical masterpieces struck a chord in me...made me smile and maybe even sniffle a bit. If you are a fan of the movie, I'm sure you would love its soundtrack too. Music like this is ideal for a romantic evening or just for pleasure listening. You don't know if you'll like something until you give it a chance! So give this a chance!!

5 out of 5 stars the Notebook soundtrack (Audio CD).......2007-05-13

This is a beautiful collection of music from the movie, The Notebook. Most is instrumental, very relaxing, as well as lively at times. Two renditions of "I'll Be Seeing You" are included.

5 out of 5 stars Very Nice.......2007-03-30

I really enjoyed listening to the soundtrack, but I'm also a big fan of background music and this cd was great for both. Listening to the cd took me back to the movie and reminded me how much I enjoyed it, but I also put the cd on during a nice meal with friends and it worked out very well, they all enjoyed the music.

5 out of 5 stars A sweeping, emotional standout!.......2007-01-11

The music from The Notebook brings you right back to the film, capturing your heart and soul. It's music will roll live waves through your soul and bring you from nostalgia to your own feelings of love and desire. The selections, arrangements and orchestrations are to be admired, and Mr. Zigman is to be praised. This soundtrack truly completes the legacy of "The Notebook".

This star-studded smooth-jazz tribute to Luther Vandross adds credence to the idea that the saxophone is the instrument that comes closest to mimicking the human voice. The passion that these reed players--including Kirk Whalum, Boney James, Mindi Abair, and Dave Koz--pour into their respective tracks makes it seems like they're speaking right from the heart. Guitarist Paul Jackson Jr. does a very funky turn on "Never Too Much," and two of the most underrated singers in contemporary urban music, Lalah Hathaway and Ledisi, also provide highlights. But the sax players steal the show, trying to match Vandross's fiery intensity, while much of the rest of the cast seem content to offer basic remakes. That's not necessarily a bad thing; co-producer and keyboard whiz Rex Rideout has delivered a thoroughly enjoyable listen from beginning to end, allowing smooth-jazz fans to sing along with Vandross's very familiar catalog. --Mark Ruffin

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-02-07

Who could ever forget such classic songs such as "The Groove Line","Always and Forever",Eyeballin', and "Boogie Nights"? This band truly covered the R&B charts with these top hits, and made their mark in the annals of the music world. These songs have stood the test of time and are still very popular today as they were back then. One of the things the listener will find is the band was very well rounded and was very diverse in their musical talents. From start to finish, this album will definately get your hands clapping and your toes tapping.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is incredible..........2007-01-12

How can you miss with songs like Grooveline, Boogie Nights and Always and Forever?!?! Heatwave generated some of their own heat in the 80's and this compilation CD captures the best of their talents.

5 out of 5 stars Heatwave Brought The Heat.......2006-10-17

Heatwave were the thang during the late '70s. Dance music was at it's height and "The Groove Line" flew up the charts. It became one of their biggest hits and one of the biggest records that year. You couldn't go to a club without hearing "The Groove Line" or "Boogie Nights". Of course they had more singles outside their dance cuts. "Always & Forever" one of their most enduring hits ever. The song became a major popular hit among R&B fans. It's a out the box classic slowjam and many people have later used the record for their weddings. "Mind Blowing Decisions" is one of their smoothest singles and "Ain't No Half Steppin" became a popular radio aired track during it's album release and it has also been used as a standard for Hip-Hop sampling. Get the album if your a fan of old school love songs with meaningful lyrics great singing or dance music but if you're just looking for some great music, this album is good for any music collection.

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing, considering what it could have been.......2007-04-20

Take a look at the running times:

Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes

What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.

C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.

Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.

This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.

5 out of 5 stars Always a pleaser.......2007-03-31

I listen to music all day with patients in my dental chair. This one is a winner with everyone. Patients always comment on how they recognize a song. Who doesn't love John Williams? His music transcends time.

5 out of 5 stars JOHN WILLIAMS 40 Years of Film Music.......2007-01-10

This 4 cd pack is an anthology of all John Williams works. From his earlier works "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Jaws" right through "Indiana Jones" and the most recent"Star Wars" prequel movies are included. Williams work in thriller and horror are also included. If you are into soundtracks and love movie music this is an essential buy. The quality of the music is excellent. With ten or more tracks on each cd it's well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Movie Music Magic & Memorabilia.......2006-12-13

This four CD set expands on the previously released John Williams Greatest Hits. It's a grand collection of nearly four hours of famous music scores from over forty years. There are many songs never before available in any collection. The short liner notes tell a great tale of musical movie history and include all of his numerous award nominations and wins. Each song (oddly enough) mentions the actors and the director, so fond are John Williams's memories of his work with these people. All of the conductors are mentioned along with specific orchestras, choirs, arrangement and orchestration specialists and even the publishers (contractual, I am sure). The only things missing are his early television scores, such as those for "Lost In Space" (by Johnny Williams back then). But with four discs, one has nothing to complain about and everything to enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars John Williams: 40 Years of Outstanding Film Music.......2006-11-28

I have been a huge fan of John Williams and I have known about his music for years. However, I never actually bought any of his music on CD. I was rather skeptical about purchasing this CD but when it arrived I knew I had made the right choice. The sound quality of the compilation is outstanding. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do a great job under the direction of Paul Bateman. The original London Symphony Orchestra CDs of John Williams' Star Wars Trilogy CDs are marginally better but this is still a great CD compilation. If you love ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter, you will love this compilation soundtrack. Buy it, listen to these CDs in the car and enjoy every minute of the collection!!!

Ol' Willie has made records like this before, but the highpoints of It Always Will Be rank with some of his most realized, subtle, and sublime work. You'd have turn to the timeless "Always on My Mind" for a Nelson ballad as moving as the title track. When he surrenders the songwriting chores to Lucinda Williams, Tom Waits, and even Toby Keith (whose working-class ballad "Tired" devastates), he sings with his unmistakable, harrowing vibrato and arranges with his gift for down-to-earth, acoustic-based country majesty. The cameos from Norah Jones and Williams feel relaxed and unaffected, and the band--hired guns from Nashville plus Nelson's longtime harmonica player Mickey Raphael--swings hard, adding a bit of richness to his tried-and-true Texas sound. Few artists in their twilight have lived up to, if not extended, their legacy like Willie Nelson has. --Roy Kasten

5 out of 5 stars Willie, and his guitar, and his soul.......2006-11-25

Of all of Nelson's album covers, none has expressed the contents so perfectly as the cover of "It Always Will Be." Willie's strong, handsome profile, the hard-earned lines on his face, his hand's loving caress on his guitar--the softness and sharp edges and warm light and deep shadows. Nelson has released many albums that serve as landmarks of American music--Red-Headed Stranger tops a long list--but none feel quite as personal to me as this gem. I get a sense of a man who has much more living to do, but has taken time to look back down the road and give us a sense of where he's been. The joys and romps and fears, triumphs and troubles--the achingly beautiful title track bookended by the rascally Midnight Rider: yes, Willie has been a lot of places, has had a lot of fun and endured a bit of pain, but the masterful simplicity of the music and strength in his voice show that he's a man who's learned a thing or two about himself and the world, and has many miles yet to go.

5 out of 5 stars Willie at his best.......2006-11-10

I thought I'd heard it all but this album is the best. Each song is a gift, a glimpse into the soul of this amazing man. He speaks to loneliness, gratitude, commitment, contentment and self realization. One moment I'm moved to tears and the next moment I'm laughing aloud with Big Booty! If you're a Willie Nelson fan, this is a MUST have album...it doesn't get any better than this!

5 out of 5 stars Willie Does It Again.......2005-09-16

Willie Nelson and George Strait have one thing in common, musically speaking, everything they touch turns to gold. This album in no way is a departure from that statement. Honestly, what can one say about a Willie Nelson album that hasn't already been said. Great, Wonderful, Terrific, Classic, Masterpiece. The list goes on. This album will not dissappoint any fan of the man in pig tails.

4 out of 5 stars Review from the Synthesis.......2005-06-15

The latest Willie Nelson album is a mostly mellow affair comprised of original material, three duets and a couple choice covers. The Nelson-penned "Texas" expresses his love for the Lone Star State with a fitting Tex-Mex mix of country pedal steel moaning over a south-of-the-border beat while a guitar dances between the two influences. Things get jazzy on "Dreams Come True," a piano-based duet with Norah Jones. A harmonica adds character to an earnest cover of "Picture in a Frame" by Tom Waits, and Greg Allman's "Midnight Rider" finally gets things moving on a closing track that could have been written especially for Willie. Highly recommended for you and your horse.

5 out of 5 stars Credit Well Earned.......2005-03-20

This review is written by a fellow from the suburbs and urban regions of New York City, not exactly a bastion of Country and Western music. But let me give credit where credit is due: "It Always Will Be" is a stunning album. I mostly remember Willie from his outlaw days with Waylon Jennings over twenty years ago and occasionally hear in the news that he is still active in Farm-Aid. I recently have become exposed to Americana Country music through a Texas radio station on the Web called KHYI and have found myself profoundly impressed by what I have heard. The schlock mass-market "country" of Shania Twain and the like is not the only country music out there, much to my great relief! KHYI has been playing several songs from this album since it came out at the end of 2004 centered around the very humorous "Big Booty" cut about a "large" girlfriend giving her "skinny" boyfriend the boot. It has sent my toes a tapping everytime I hear it. They also play a true new Willie classic on par with anything he has ever done in the form of the title cut "It Always Will Be". This slow ballad will raise goosebumps the size of golfballs on your skin listening to his lyrics, guitaring, and delivery. It doesn't get much better than this in any form of music. "I Didn't Come Here (And I Ain't Leavin')" is a heroic honky-tonk crowd pleaser while "Midnight Rider" does the same with more of a rock and roll pace with help from Toby Keith. There are also three duets on here with Paula Nelson, Norah Jones, and Lucinda Williams that are intimate, small setting lounge classics. Jazz and true country never sounded better. This CD runs 52 minutes long over 14 songs and there truly is not a single weak cut on it. Willie has put several exclamation points near the end of his long career with this album. It is not getting near as much airplay as it should due to Nashville's dislike for anything that does not originate with it's "good tastes", ie. Americana Texas based Country (and WESTERN!). Amazon has clips from all 14 cuts from this album above so, give a few listens if you are not sure. This truly is one of the best albums so far of the 21st Century.
