As with other Ellipsis Arts releases, African Lullaby is more than a stellar music collection. Its delightful liner notes provide ample context for these "love songs for children" and the collection's innovative earth-friendly packaging is a work of art unto itself. Commencing with the bewitching Zulu harmonies of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, "Thula Mtwana" sets the tone, creating an atmosphere of warmth, safety, and peace, and is followed by a baker's dozen that reflect the gentle rhythms of an abundantly diverse continent. "Kounandu Deni" marries the dancing melody of Malian guitar and African harp with lyrics of paternal providence. Broadway's Sarafina! and The Lion King cast member Ntomb'khona Dlamini wails soulfully on "Thula Thula," and "Chitsidzo" is a mystical reverie of parental love and spousal longing accompanied by the intense beauty of a mbira (thumb piano). Standing head and shoulders above others in its class, African Lullaby is testimony to the awesome power of music. --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars Our favorite.......2007-04-03

This is my son's favorite cd to listen to when he is falling asleep and we don't mind overhearing it on the monitor! I spent a few years in Africa and a few of the lullabies remind me of singing with my coworkers and friends. Just beautiful.

3 out of 5 stars Not a lullabye CD.......2007-03-01

While I love this album - especially the first track by Ladysmith Black Mambazo - I don't find it very soothing. The rhythms are not sleepy, but rather sweet and uplifting. I can't imagine a child in Africa being sung to sleep by most of these songs - these are the equivalent of slow pop songs from the 70s like "Time in a Bottle" - basically, love songs. Sappy and slow, but not lullabyes. I've heard a few African lullabyes, and other than the LBM track and one or two others this isn't it. Buy the album - but then request the publisher release an album of songs to soothe your kid to sleep.

4 out of 5 stars Great for babies and adults.......2007-01-09

I bought this for my daughter as a change from the rest of the lullabies and we both enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Great lullaby CD - it really works!.......2006-09-10

It's great. The songs are wonderful and it puts my 7mth old daughter to sleep in mins. At home or on long driving trips it is very soothing. Adults be careful...it also works on us too! Guarenteed to put YOU to sleep in seconds!
I will also recommend 'Gift of the Tortoise' by Ladysmith Black Mambazo...wonderful and educational CD.
Happy shopping!

For people who know their Senegalese music, Orchestra Baobab's Pirates Choice is the Holy Grail. By the time this music was recorded to four-track in 1982, the immensely popular band had been playing nightly for years at a Dakar club called Baobab. But legendary status in Senegal didn't help the musicians get wider attention--the album wasn't released in Europe until 1987, and it only now comes to the U.S. for the first time. Latin music was popular in Dakar, a port city, and the band mixed various strains of Latin music with different African music styles to create uniformly stunning results not all that different from Afro-Cuban music. The French vocals are lovely, and the powerful mix of African and Latin percussion is undeniable--but keep a particular ear out for guitarist Barthelemy Attisso, whose tasteful leads float over the top. The original six-track album is hard to pass up, but this reissue contains a second disk with six unreleased songs from the same session, making this a must-have. --Tad Hendrickson

this is an album that i can just enjoy a lazy day with. it has that feel for me of a day at the ocean where i have my lil cool drink and the migration of the gulls and i just get lost and forget the world. love it from beginning top end. you will too!!!! check it out!!!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums I own..........2005-09-30

I knew nothing about the history of this album's lineup, and actually picked it up on a snap decision (rare for me these days) because I thought it looked interesting.

It's not Cu-bop, it's not wholely Senegalese, and it's not Jazz, although it has elements of all three. I don't remember the names of the band members, but the guitarist alone makes the album worth buying. If I had to come up with an analogy, "Pirates Choice" is the "Souvlaki" of world music.

Jimmy Buffett would kill to make an album this good. Absolutely essential.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic, but plagarizing kills one song.......2005-06-08

let me say without a doubt volta is absolutely the s***, from their first disc to frances, it just goes from great to greater. i firmly believe they will lead all music that is tasteful in a new direction...a la every band that has done so in history. even their live show rocked harder than any other concert i have been to, and they were the only band on the bill! but i have to digress, now, hearing the first sign of unoriginality(?) out of their collective musical output. simply, track 3 is lifted right off another album by baobob orchestra- pirates choice. the very first song, "utrus horas" is exactly what mars volta plays in their afro-samba breakdown. NOT the rock-out part. but it is half of volta's song, and that says a lot. no homage is made to baobob, or any credits, or anything.....just a rip off of their jam. listen for yourself. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005UPF7/qid=1118244841/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_2/103-0483868-3287833?v=glance&s=music

and that song goes on for 8 mins with various instrumental solos, just as volta does in their "rendition." let me know what you guys think about this.

If I could give this album a higher rating I would. I heard a piece on NPR one day driving home and I thought I like this band, wonder if the album is any good. So I purchased it and it is one of my favorite mellow albums to listen to. If you like world music this is a must have CD.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

The material on this incandescent release evokes the Senegalese superstar Baaba Maal's previous acoustic stunners, Djam Leeli and Baayo. Maal's piercingly gorgeous, stratospheric Islamic wailing soars over melodies constructed along austere yet sensuous lines as he sings of Africa's imminent heyday, romantic love, and ancient tales. He interacts with constantly shifting strands of song fashioned by guitarists Mansour Seck (Maal's best friend from childhood, who also sings second voice) and Kante Manfila, plus the nimble-fingered kora, or West African harp, of Kaouding Cissokho. The lead trio ripples and leaps among woodsy balafons (xylophones), rattling and swooping talking drums and sabar percussion, and resonant, gutty plucked strings. The ambiance recalls Maal's legendary small-venue live performances or dusk in a small Fulani village, where musicians who have played together all their lives still surprise each other while everybody else sings along. Seasoned fans and newcomers alike will be challenged, astonished, and delighted. --Christina Roden

Album Description

Following on from the success of his 1998 album Nomad Soul with it's state of the art fusions and collaborations, Missing You (Mi Yeewni) presents Baaba Maal focusing on the acoustic, poetic side of his heritage. Baaba Maal is a world renowned artist and spokesperson for Africa, and on this release he remains true to himself - it is passionate and honest, simple and complex, traditional and contemporary. 11 tracks. 2001 release.

5 out of 5 stars SUBLIME SENEGALESE MUSIC!.......2004-06-22

Unquestionably one of the best albums I'll ever have. Baaba Maal and Mansour Seck bring magic to your ears with this accustic CD. I can't get sick of it! I am listening to it right now as you read this review.

5 out of 5 stars Back to the Basics.......2003-06-19

If you wish to speak of African music, you must include Baaba Maal, who is unquestionably one of the vast continent's quintessential musicians. It could be asserted that "Missing You" is Maal's quitessential album. Certainly, anyone wishing to seriously explore world music would do well to buy "Missing You."

Senegalese music has become known for its aggressive fusion with western music (particularly French). Maal explored the fusion genre a bit in "Nomad Soul" but didn't seem entirely comfortable there. With "Missing You" he returns to his roots, his basic sound heard before in albums such as "Baayo," and it is here that he thrives.

"Missing You" reminds us of where Senegalese music (and much of African music) came from. The feel is of a night where friends have gathered after dinner to calmly play together. The production is decidedly low-tech, Maal's distinctive vibratto voice accompanied by kora, guitar, balafones, drums, and several backup singers. The music is always light, airy, and folky - very organic and true.

The possible knock against this album is that the songs start to all sound the same. But then "Missing You" is not meant to excite and impress, its purpose is to connect and reassure and it never disappoints in that. It is excellent after-dinner music. Next time friends are over, put aside the standard American folk fare and put some Baaba Maal in for an extremely pleasant change.

4 out of 5 stars It's good.......2003-03-21

African singer-songwriter Baaba Maal has created, on this cd, music with melodic lines ranging from very mellow to more fun, with vocals that are often plaintive but sometimes also very catchy. There's always a lot going on in this music. It's good.

5 out of 5 stars A new all-time favorite.......2002-11-27

Now moving into a streak of African music, this album is now one of my favorite CDs. So often I hear great music and wonder what culture it is from or who the artist is...well this is one of those CDs...the Aha!, that's what I've been looking for. I feel at ease and happy when I listen to Baaba's music. I plan to buy more of his CDs.

4 out of 5 stars embrace this.......2002-10-14

Senegalese superstar Baaba Maal is one of Africa's greatest singers. Known best in America for his contributions to Passion, Peter Gabriel's groundbreaking score for The Last Temptation of Christ, his blend of Islamic wailing, French singing, and sensual melodies is a treat for the ears. A worthy introduction to life-affirming African world music and yet, not even necessarily his best work (check out Firin' in Fouta from 1994 or Djam Leeli from 1998).

2 out of 5 stars Yucko........2005-01-01

If you enjoy this sort of florid, over-ripe, overproduced pop, then I suppose this is a very generous collection, what with the rarities and live tracks and all. It's not for me, though. I do not like it, Sam I Am. There are other Youssou N'Dour albums I'd recommend first.

5 out of 5 stars AWSOME!.......2004-05-30

I found out about Yousou N'Dour while doing a report on the country "senegal"(where he was born). I wrote about him for famous people and he sounded cool so i got his cd. I was BLOWN AWAY. Even though i cant understand the words, the beats are awsome and they will get you up dancing!!! THIS IS A MUST IN THE COLLECTION!

4 out of 5 stars Great voice, music to enjoy time and again.......2004-04-27

Basically I am a Western pop fan , having listened to mainly chart tunes and commercially released albums sung in English, by Australian, British, North American and European artists and amassed a very big collection of such recordings. I bought this album then as a departure from my usual field of knowledge and was richly rewarded with some very good music. I do not have the words to describe Youssou N'Dour's style accurately, as I know little about Senegalese music, yet anyone with ears can hear how terrific a singer he is. In 1994, I loved his magical duet 7 Seconds (performed with Neneh Cherry), and I rate it as one of the best songs of the 90's. That is the most familiar cut here, but most listeners will recognise the old Peter Tosh song Don't Look Back (done in a smooth soulful style), and of course the bouncy Beatles song Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da, which Mr. N'Dour has some fun with. I liked the Fulani chant Yo Le Le best - this has a groovy beat . A bonus feature here for Western music fans unfamiliar with the Wolof language is a translation included for most song lyrics in the CD's booklet. This is a very welcome feature of this set, and adds to one's understanding and enjoyment of these songs. As a result of my enjoyment of this album, I intend to listen to more music in this style.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic combo of traditional Senegalese mbalax and pop.......2004-03-24

Having seen Youssou perform live - brilliantly - very recently, I was compelled to own a piece of his discography. This album is perfect for the new Youssou fan, and serves as a great introduction to the broad range of his work. From the pop-influenced work with Peter Gabriel to the divine soul of the memorable '7 Seconds' with Neneh Cherry, the album traverses the traditional Senegalese sound with Western influences. The most joyful and moving songs will have you jumping.'New Africa' pays homage to his home continent, and the live recordings of 'Set' and 'Oh Boy' bring the exuberance to the fore. The amusing bonus of 'Ob-La-Di' will leave you with a smile. An excellent album for those who like his poppier side, with less emphasis on his mbalax and Super Etoile de Dakar background.

5 out of 5 stars exceptional, the best of the rough guide series.......2003-08-11

This CD knocked me out from the first note. After listening to it on the bus 400 times I actually bought the Lonely Planet Senegal & Gambia (sorry Rough Guide...). The music of this region is jazzy, smooth, soulful, and completely unique. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Sene-Gambian Pop! Wow!.......2002-03-06

West Africa is famous for its great musicians. Indeed, many styles of music, such as the Blues, Jazz and Reggae, are believed to have their origins in the hereditary musician traditions of west Africa (particuarly the kingdom of Mali). Whether or not this is true, the music on this CD is particularly moving and beautiful. Another compilation in the Rough Guides series, this CD explores the musical traditions of the west African countries of Senegal and Gambia.
Several big names, such as Baaba Maal, Youssou N'Dour, Ismael Lo and Cheikh Lo, all appear on this CD, with excellent contributions from each. However, there is more to this music than the big names, already familar to the west. The songs "Kairaba Jabi" and "Nguisstal" are both excellent examples of Sene-Gambian music, and the number done by Orchestra Baobab is wonderfully lively. Over all, this CD is an excellent compilation of Sene-Gambian pop music, showcasing a variety of styles and artists. Go with it!

The music scene in Senegal is a vibrant one that includes such international stars as Youssou N'Dour, Orchestra Baobab, and Cheikh Lô. Singer/guitarist/producer Wasis Diop is on that elevated list as well. The reason for it is readily apparent on this greatest hits collection Everything Is Never Quite Enough. Here we get one new song (opener "Le Passeur") and 18 other tunes culled from No Sant (What's Your Name), Toxu, and his soundtrack to the movie Hyenes. Not an artist for the African music purist, Diop creates a modern multi-layered sound that skillfully weaves in elements of jazz, rock, and soul as well as indigenous music from other countries. It's the polar opposite of a field recording, but the fusion is nonetheless a skillful one. One does wonder why Diop's first album is five years is a collection of old material, but this is a fine and readily available stopgap as we wait. --Tad Hendrickson

Album Description

Everything Is Never Quite Enough is more than a simple retrospective of one of world music's most influential artists. It is an historical overview, a glimpse into the world of an artist who has little time for musical boundaries. While cultivating one of the most unique global fusions in music today, Wasis over the course of the 19 tracks on Everything… combines elements of Arabic, Calypso, R & B, Reggae, Latin and pop all while retaining its traditional Senegalese and West African base. Lyrics are sung in French, English and Diop's' native Wolof often weaving in and out of the languages and all in enthralling service to the elegance and seduction of Wasis' voice.

The first track, "Le passeur" - a brand new song that appears here for the first time - is the latest example of Wasis' artistic alchemy. The other 18 tracks are culled from his three 90's releases (the never released in North America soundtrack Hyènes and the no longer available No Sant and award-winning Toxu) and represent the very best of Wasis Diop. Included are the title track (used in a provocative scene in the film The Thomas Crown Affair); "DèFaal Lu wor" (a stirring version of Talking Heads "Once In A Lifetime"); the mesmerizing North African rhythms of "Dune"; the Afro-urban pulse of "Soweto Daal"; the radio- ready "African Dream"; the tenderly evocative "No Sant"; the romantic "Julia", every track in its own way an offering from Wasis Diop vision of music of the world as open and free.

le passeur is my favorite song on this, but it is really an all around good album.

5 out of 5 stars Carried Away.......2007-02-17

The more I listen to this CD, the more amazed at the talented musicians of Africa. Wasis Diop is first on my list. It deserved a Grammy. Every cut is masterful and transports me to the soul of the world, Africa.

5 out of 5 stars I loved it........2006-12-29

I bought this album because I knew there was a song from The Thomas Crowne Affair on it, and I couldn't think of any of those songs that I wouldn't like. I really had no idea what I was getting, and DID I LUCK OUT!! The first time I listened to the album, I must have sat through the first 20 minutes with an incredulous grin on my face, it was that well done and that much fun.

It is a polished recording with great sound, interesting songs, and great percussion. If you like world music of any kind, it is hard for me to imagine you won't feel the same way I do about this album.

5 out of 5 stars Fuses his African roots with a modern studio-enhanced pop .......2004-09-02

Many folk-rooted artists yearn for international success, and many struggle with the urges to modernize versus being true to their roots: Wasis Diop is one of the few to succeed at fusing his African roots with a modern studio-enhanced pop sound.
He has succeeded so well that most people reading this review will already have heard some of these songs on the radio: this is a 'greatest hits' album and public, college and independent radio have all gotten hip to Wasis Diop.

Nearly every artist in Senegal has to wrestle with the long shadow cast by the mighty Youssou N'Dour. A former N'Dour protege, Cheikh Lo is one who has staked his own claim. With a deep but still sweetly melodious and sometimes hoarse voice that is the opposite of the keening N'Dour's, Lo takes a foundation of Mbalax--an uptempo Senegalese style that mixes pop, African and Caribbean styles together in varying degrees--and adds even more. Here, on his first album in six years, a drum troop from the Brazilian state of Bahia fills out some tunes and James Brown saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis is brought in to add some peppy soul music-inflected horn parts to others. The intersection of ideas, styles, and cultures is far from smooth, but the kinetic energy created by all the influences brings a festive vibrancy to the music. Highlights include the undulating "N'Galula," the smooth ballad "Sante Yalla," and the chattering "Senegal/Bresil." --Tad Hendrickson

Album Description

Senegalese musical maverick Cheikh Lo's third album for World Circuit/Nonesuch, Lamp Fall, has a distinctively contemporary feel, incorporating different styles and influences while retaining the deep spirituality that is essential to Lo. Lamp Fall is undeniably upbeat, celebratory album, that weaves together a myriad of colors and textures.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Cheikh does it again.......2006-05-12

Fans of Cheikh get in the queue! His first album in six years, and his third solo international effort for World Circuit, is another masterpiece. It was recorded in Dakar, London and Bahia, Brazil. Like his others it is eclectic, individual and brims with joyful melodies, nicely sprung rhythms and tasteful, creative arrangements.

Cheikh Lo, from Senegal, states that the theme of the album is his Africa, a plea against war and poverty, but it's also about love, religion and spirituality. As on his previous albums there is a huge variety of African rhythms, with a little Latin thrown in as well. Apart from two that are vaguely similar, each track is a completely different adventure, from songs of praise to full-blown dance numbers.

The opening song "Sou" sounds very French with its mellow accordion, although it is sung in bambara, a Burkina Faso language. From there we proceed to some delicious funky dance tracks like "Xale" and the soukous-inspired "N'Galuia", a processional "Senegal-Bresil" conjuring up a carnival, psalm-like soulful ballads such as the evocative "Sante Yalla", a reggae "Bamba Mo Woor" and more.

There are plenty of contributing musicians yet mixes remarkably never sound crowded. In fact they range from almost understated to grandly symphonic. Many are elegantly mbalax percussion-driven, while Cheikh's wide-ranging mellifluous voice is always clearly focused whether it is intimate or passionately soaring. There is a judicious employment of wind or vocal choruses, and guitar, saxophone or other instrumental solos blend rather than project.

The warm unpretentious music always flows naturally, the ensemble playing is as tight as it gets, and the ambient recording is full and detailed. A most engaging album that will never wear out its welcome.

5 out of 5 stars From Africa to the Americas and back to Africa again.......2006-04-29

Excellent album from one of today's most incredible musicians. Not only does "Lamp Fall" find this West African artist embracing ancient Wolof musical traditions that reveal the Wolof as one of the primary African origins of the music of people of African descent in Cuba, the U.S., Brasil, and the Caribbean, but he re-Africanizes the music of these diasporic Africans into a rich, multifaceted, and sophisticated sound.

Though this album doesn't proceed "Ne La Thiass" in greatness, it remains a remarkable contribution to the evergrowing and complex music scene overflowing in both Senegal and Mali.

African music heads have done a bit of grumbling over the years about Youssou N'Dour. They take issue with the great singer's choice to record high-energy mbalax music, which mixes African and Cuban rhythms, for his Senegal homeland fans while recording (lesser to some) modern global pop for his European and American releases. N'Dour continues to do the crossover thing on Egypt, but rather than draw upon Western pop song constructs, he dives into Arabian and Egyptian orchestra music complete with strings, flutes, and percussion. In the past, the singer's voice often had a keening quality that allowed him to soar over his working band, the great Super Etoile, but here N'Dour smoothes over the rough edges to render some of his most delicate and subtle singing to date. Providing strong support, the orchestra sounds lush and dynamic throughout. The only real complaint here is the relatively short 41-minute running time of the album, but there's still plenty music for purists and popsters. --Tad Hendrickson

Album Description

While Youssou N'Dour's international releases have always combined Senegalese musical traditions with outside sources of inspiration, Egypt takes a fresh approach; on this album, the rhythms and melodies of Senegal drive arrangements featuring Egyptian and Arabian orchestral sounds. Featuring traditional musicians in Dakar and in Cairo, EgyptEgypt is N'Dour's lyrical celebration of Senegal's Muslim mystical culture of Sufism. EgyptEgypt's lyrics demonstrate a distinctly Senegalese way of Islam, and of Sufi thought and practice, with references to venerated caliphs, saints, and sages

5 out of 5 stars Senegal, Egypt and Arabia... A Winning Combination.......2006-05-23

On this beautiful CD, Senegalese superstar Youssou N'Dour both returns to his roots and brings in new influences, looking to the east for inspiration. Featuring a full classical Arab orchestra directed by Egyptian conductor Fathy Salama alongside traditional Senegalese musicians, this CD was born from recording studios in Cairo and Dakar. Classical Arab instruments like the 'oud, violin, tabla and ney meld seemlessly with African percussion, the kora and Youssou N'Dour's marvellous vocals in the Wolof language. The resulting fusion is a masterpiece of world music, and carries a strong Sufi resonance from both countries. After all, despite the geographic distance, Senegal shares a great deal of Muslim heritage with Egypt and the other Arab states, so this CD shouldn't be too surprising.

Listening to the CD, one can feel the passion and intensity that Youssou N'Dour and the other musicians feel for God. I don't want to make it out as if this CD is only for followers of Islam. Anyone can appreciate the beauty and wonder of this music; it speaks to your very soul of love and compassion. Songs like "Shukran Bamba", "Tijaniyya" "Touba - Daru Salaam" and "Allah" are easy to appreciate even if you don't speak Wolof. The booklet includes translations of the lyrics so that English-speakers can appreciate the poetry and creativity of the songs. I was very excited when this CD was released (and Thione Seck's similar "Orientisme" in which he collaborated with artists from Senegal, Egypt and India), but had put off buying it for too long. I'm glad I finally got around to buying this CD, and I hope that other lovers of African music (and classical Arabic music) go and check this out. This is a wonderful cross-cultural experience, and well worth hearing.

2 out of 5 stars Listen in Moderation.......2005-07-16

I did like this album when i bought it. Infact I would have definetly given it a higher rating then - but now, after listening to it a few times, I realize the album really begins to weigh too much on you and the songs grow stale. They are great songs, and they should be appreciated, but really listen to it in moderation.

4 out of 5 stars N'Dour's homage to Egypt and the heartland of Sufism........2004-08-31

N'Dour's latest release EGYPT is different yet again: EGYPT retains N'Dour's homage to Egypt and the heartland of Sufism, blends in his Senegal sound with Middle East influences, and showcases these influences more than many of his other albums.

4 out of 5 stars Continuing to Expand Musical Boundaries.......2004-07-27

Mr. N'Dour has, for years, been one of world music's leading ambassadors, and Egypt will continue expanding our musical boundaries in the west. As a typical US citizen, I can't understand the lyrics here. But his passion, performance and the score convey the urgency and soulfulness of the songs.

I get the message.

The safe thing for Mr. N'Dour would have been to stylistically return to his breakout CD of a decade ago, The Guide, arguably one of the best releases ever. But to his credit as a genuine artist, he has matured and evolved into a new area. Art is not static, especially in music. And if that measure of value is applied here, then this definietly qualifies as a CD worthy of repeated listening.

4 out of 5 stars Neat cutural music.......2004-07-21

This album's arab-african sound is immediately catchy...and almost singable, even without knowing the language. This album is upbeat and beautiful, and is a great cutural piece in a climate where things Arabic or Islamic are stigmatized as threatening.

this record is a great representation of traditional african music. although ity leaves out quite a bit of countries in the collection, it caputres the liveliness of african folk music. I love it.

Youssou N'Dour, a superstar at home in Senegal and in most of Africa, possesses an astonishingly strong and supple high-tenor voice, and he writes tuneful, insightful songs about his fellow West Africans' transition from isolated rural villages to cosmopolitan big cities. The Guide (Wommat) includes several calculated enticements to lure an Anglo-American audience: a bilingual duet with hip-hop star Neneh Cherry on "Seven Seconds," a guest appearance by saxophonist Branford Marsalis on "Without a Smile," and a bilingual version of Bob Dylan's "Chimes of Freedom." The Marsalis and Dylan experiments work, while the Cherry one doesn't, but they're superfluous to the main focus of the album, which is N'Dour's shift from a bandleader to a singer-songwriter with a backing band. The infectious mbalax rhythms of Senegal are still there, but they're pushed down in the mix so the focus is on N'Dour's vocals. There are some missteps, like the simple-minded cheerleading of "Tourista" and "Love One Another," but for the most part N'Dour comes across as the Stevie Wonder of West Africa. --Geoffrey Himes

4 out of 5 stars Good music, but not his or Senegal's best album........2002-08-24

I enjoy this cd, but I don't love it. It's a pleasant listening experience, but there is no song on it that I would classify as among my all-time favorites.
N'Dour has a wonderful voice, well worth getting to know, and the quality of the playing is excellent. However, I believe that most people from Western countries who would buy this album are intrigued by music from Africa and want to try something different. Therefore it is the very fact that this album sounds quite a bit like Western pop that bothers me. I wish that the, to me, exotic African elements were more to the fore, and the everyday pop elements were less evident. If you also are interested in this singer because you want to listen to something out of the ordinary, I would suggest you buy instead a cd by Cheikh Lo, who is also from Senegal. Lo's music is more obviously unusual, and yet very beautiful. One of N'Dour's less Westernized albums would also be more appropriate.

4 out of 5 stars Africa for Beginners.......2000-12-28

I like African music, but I won't recommend every album to my friends. A musician like Franco is maybe too difficult to enjoy. This album by Youssou N'Dour is great music and has enough connections with our European ears (is that English?). Seven seconds is a all time high

5 out of 5 stars a magnificent collaboration.......1999-11-23

I purchased this CD several years ago. I'd never heard N'Dour before then, but was intrigued by peter Gabriel's statement that N'Dour was the best vocalist alive. I shy away from absolute statements like the previous, but agree whole heartedly that Youssou N'Dour is ONE of the world's best singers. His vocal range may not immediately attract your attention, but repeated listens will surprise and satisfy many close listens. The duet with Nenah Cherry is one of the best songs recorded in the '90s. The social message positive, the groove eminently danceable, and the melody uplifting. The violin solo works! The other songs are less exceptional than 7 Seconds, but the message of hope and joy in life consistent (n.b How You Are). For all lovers of music which marries traditional sounds and instruments with modern recording values and styles. Admittedly, my love of 7 Seconds makes this CD a must have in my books, regardless of relative quality of the other tunes.
