Huey Lewis and the News may have taken 10 years off between albums, but after listening to the ironically titled Plan B, it's like the Little Bar Band That Could never really left. Disarming frontman Huey Lewis is still turning out the same affable, effortless, pasteurized pop that he did when the band dominated the charts in the '80s, and his crack band plays with precision. The only difference is that instead of pining for a new drug, regaling listeners with those wry little cultural snapshots like "Hip to Be Square," or complaining about "Working for a Living," this collection of 10 original tunes (and a cover of Nick Lowe's "When I Write the Book") is an examination of relationships. Not the redeeming "Power of Love" that Lewis extolled in 1982, but the self-conscious ebb and flow of a long romance as it unravels. Songs like the discouraging "Let Her Go and Start Over" and the quirky "My Other Woman" throw a dim light on ardor and attachment. Even the album's standout track, "I'm Not in Love Yet" (a duet with the wondrously gritty-voiced Wynonna Judd) finds both parties hedging their bets. But you shouldn't. This is a strong collection of songs that elevates the band from being just another '80s retread, and also proves that Plan A is still working fine. --Jaan Uhelszki

Forward With Plan B!: A Track-By-Track Review.......2007-02-03
"We're Not Here For A Long Time (We're Just Here For A Good Time)" - Provides a terrific intro to the album. It has everything...the rowdy crowd noise, the baseball organ, and the inspirational Huey yell to start things off. This song has the classic Huey sound and makes me want to get together with friends and drink beer.
"My Other Woman" - This has to be one of the best cheatin' songs ever written. It takes a completely new look at things by asking what happens if the person you're cheating with starts cheating on you?! This song also features some of the best songwriting on Plan B. It's very clever without sounding stupid. I especially like the doctor's response to Huey's query and the background vocals by the News towards the end. Good stuff.
"I Ain't Perfect" - Huey proves he's not perfect by including this dud on the album Perhaps I'm being harsh here, but it sounds like Huey had a great line ("I ain't perfect, but I'm perfect for you"), and tried to write an entire song around it, but couldn't think of anything else to say. It's the first let-down on Plan B, but it's still better than a lot of the garbage Huey's released on his most recent albums. "Bobo Tempo" comes to mind.
"When I Write The Book" - An unquestionable highlight. This song has the best hook on the album, and I was singing along the very first time I heard it. Although Huey didn't have a hand in it, I think this song has some of the best lyrics on Plan B. "When I Write The Book" also makes good use of the News on back-up vocals. It gives me chills when they chime in with, "...when I write the book!...". I'm also a big fan of the organ riff throughout.
"I'm Not In Love Yet" - As far as I'm concerned, this track is a swing and a miss. It's actually a pretty good song with nice sentiment and decent lyrics, but I'm horribly disappointed with the selection of Wynonna as Huey's duet partner. I can think of about 58 better women to sing with Huey. Even Winona Ryder would have been an improvement. Wynonna does a better job than I thought she would, but she's a heifer and she sounds like a man. The Huey/Wynonna dynamic just isn't believable. Overall, "I'm Not In Love Yet" isn't a bad track. It's a lot better than I thought it would be, but it's still a difficult listen. It includes some of Huey's best vocals on Plan B, but unfortunately the use of Wynonna ruins the song for me. This one had a lot of potential.
"Thank You #19" - You've got to be careful if you name-drop Marvin Gaye and Sly & The Family Stone in the same song. It implies that your song is going to kick some serious butt. Unfortunately, "Thank You #19" doesn't quite live up to the expectations. It's still a pretty good song and I think it's one of the highlights for the News. The song makes good use of the band instrumentally and vocally. I especially like the instrumental portion towards the end. I also like the fact that Huey doesn't try to hide the fact that he's singing one of the most common cliches in modern pop music.
"Plan B" - The title track is another one of my personal favorites. It features a terrific bluesy intro and excellent guitar throughout. The use of the horns is also reminiscent of some of the classics from the mid-80's. This song is one of the best singalongs for News-wannabes and proves once again that the News are the greatest bar band in the world. I also like the line about the little dog and the big chain.
"The Rhythm Ranch" - This is a good follow-up to the title track and builds on the whole bar band-thing. It's something of a feel-good song, but all the bass singing in the world won't hide the fact that there's nothing here lyrically. I like the old-school piano solo and the harmonica at the end, but I don't think we have to worry about that Grammy.
"Let Her Go And Start Over" - Wow! Along with "When I Write The Book", this is my favorite song on Plan B. The harmonica solo that opens the song is so good that it hurts. One of the biggest highlights on the entire album is the call-and-response between Huey and the band. Huey sings, "My friends tell me..." and the News chime in with their advice: "Let her go and start over!". I love that. I also love the fake ending. Just when you think it's over, the News come back for more. I could listen to this one all day.
"I Never Think About You" - "Believe it or not, you're the last thing on my mind." Is Huey telling the truth here or is he fooling himself? That's the question. He reveals the truth halfway through the song. Oh, poor Huey. It just breaks my heart. I thought Huey was so cool. I never stopped to think that he might have feelings. Oh, he suffers so. I like this song, but Huey's singing sounds off. His vocals sound very strained and weak. Maybe his microphone was malfunctioning.
"So Little Kindness" - Excellent organ riff throughout and nice use of horns. We've heard it all before, but "So Little Kindness" fits surprisingly well into Plan B. It makes for a great ending to the album.
It gets better with age.......2006-12-19
I picked up Plan B when I saw Huey Lewis and the News in a small concert several years ago. Frankly, I didn't care for it much at the time, but wanted to support one of my favorite artists.
Over time it's become my favorite News album of them all. Sure, none of the songs will ever have the widespread acclaim of "Workin for a Living", or "Do You Believe in Love?", but this is the music that the News was born to play. Every song on the album is overflowing with soul and has an honesty that's hard to come by.
My favorites on the album are the cover of "When I Write the Book" which is better than the original for a very upbeat track, and then "I Ain't Perfect", and the duet with Wynonna refreshingly titled "I'm Not in Love Yet." To my mind, those three alone make the CD worth owning. The rest is gravy. Delicious, fatty gravy.
Solid set from a solid band.......2005-09-18
This has the classic HL&TN's sound and has several great tracks on it. It is good to see that the boys still got it.

Good, Solid CD.......2005-05-27
This CD is a good example of what good rock should sound like. It is not flashy, overproduced, or lacking substance. The guys do a good job of producing a good, solid work that does not rely on pop hits in order to make up for useless tracks. Even though I was barely born during this band's glory days, I still consider them to be a very good bar band, and there is nothing wrong with that!

Awesome CD.......2007-04-25
This is by far one of the best CDs I've got in my collection. I loved their old stuff and was completely pleased to hear they were still making music--and that it sounds so much fuller and more mature than the collection of songs on Naive Art. As one of the other reviewers mentioned, there are a good 6+ songs on this CD that could/should be singles. Heck, the first 5 songs alone are outright wonderful. I find myself singing the songs throughout the day long after I've stopped listening to them. Probably the only song I don't like very much is "Fear of a Red Planet" which is humorous since that's the title of the CD.
If you like electronic music get this CD. You won't be disappointed! Also, if you are just getting back into Red Flag like I did, be sure you purchase this CD first. I would then recommend Bitter End and Code Breaker. I also purchased The Crypt but the production quality isn't as good and the songwriting and singing just isn't as mature as Red Planet.
dark and delicious.......2003-07-27
First of all, this is not the single! This is the full album! Amazon has it listed incorrectly. Anyway, on to my review... I have been on an enormous synthpop kick the past couple years, ordering almost every album of the genre possible from Amazon. I can't say why it took me so long to order a Red Flag album, but am I glad I finally did! I now have all their available albums other than the Lighthouse (which is shipping soon) and Fear of a Red Planet is my favorite. In fact, it's one of my favorite albums of all time. It's darker than some of their albums, but not quite as dark as The Crypt, The Bitter End, or Codebreaker T133. Half of the songs on here are single-worthy, my favorites being "On The Highway," "So Lie With Me," "I Love You To Death," "Cause and Consequence," and "Lullaby for a Restless Girl." Seriously, every album by Red Flag is worth checking out (except maybe The Crypt). If you are into synthpop at all, give these guys a listen. With so much variety among their albums, you're sure to find something to please you. Fear of a Red Planet is sort of the middle ground, combining all their sounds to date.
Wow!.......2002-08-24

Simply awesome!.......2002-11-25
This album leaves me breathless. It is just AWESOME! The music is very beautiful and inspiring. I just love the song "Take care love". I can just listen to that song over and over again. The lead vocals are so beautiful and the music very enigmatic and inspiring, one of Red Flag's best compositions. This is an album to have if you are a Red Flag fan.
Solid works from Reynolds brothers.................2002-08-04
"The Eagle and Child" album consists of some GREAT "catchy" tracks such as: "Time", "In My Arms Again", "The Game", "Deeper Shade of Blue", and "Illumination." Those are my favorite tracks in this album. The mood of the album itselves is more on the "light"-kind of synthpop. Definitely far from the darker "The Crypt" or "Fear of A Red Planet" album. So, for those who enjoy a happy & light synthpop, this album is definitely for you. Peace !!
Red Flag before turning towards darkness...........2002-05-08
This is the last album by the band before moving towards dark/gothic synth. It is a very good album and I really like it.
I enjoy most of the songs in this album. The lyrics are great as always and the music is fantastic (true synth-pop). The Reynolds Brothers have never let me down yet. The vocals are like the previous albums and Chris does a great job with it. Songs like "Disarray", "Synthpopalooza", "Illumination", "Take Care Love", "She's My Girl","Time",and "Deper Shade of Blue" are great to listen and dance to. Other songs like "The Game", and "In My Arms Again" are romantic and slow. Definate must have for all fans.

Product Description
The Crypt is the turning point for Red Flag as their music took on a darker, more industrial mood. Still masters at melody and arrangement, The Crypt shows off Red Flag's talent at song writing and catchy lyrics albeit in harder and darker style. This album will appeal to listeners in the industrial, ebm, futurepop, goth, and darkwave genres as well as Red Flag's following of synthpop addicts.
Customer Reviews:
Good CD but not their best.......2007-04-25
After reading all the reviews about The Crypt, I fully expected to love this album when I received it. However, after giving it a few listens, it leaves a lot to be desired.
It has a few good songs but many of them sound "muddy" with too much bass and not enough balance between the highs, lows and vocals. Some of the vocals are totally hard to hear and sung a little unevenly. In short, this CD doesn't sound like it was professionaly produced compared to Fear of a Red Planet and The Bitter End, which sound much better on my car stereo.
By comparison, Fear of a Red Planet has some really good songs with good lyrics that you can sing along with. I've found songs from that CD get stuck in my head long after I've stopped listening to the music, which is an indicator of how good the CD is.
So...I'd say this is a decent CD, but I think Red Planet and The Bitter End sound much more polished and complete by comparison.
A unique sound by an independent duo.......2004-01-08
I am not a huge fan of synth-pop, but these guys have a hold on me for some reason; on The Crypt they have put out a series of catchy tunes, a pretty (and pretty strong) 41 minutes of music. Red Flag is somewhere between the existentialism of "Click Click" (a fairly obscure band these days) and the sappiness of Depeche Mode. I would recommend this music to fans of either of those two bands; clubbers who are into EBM might even enjoy the tame sound of The Crypt. What i appreciate most about Red Flag is their DIY (do it yourself) philosophy, which often entails eccentric packaging of the CD.
Let me clear one thing up right now: This CD can hardly be called "dark" music when one considers the dozens of truly dark electronically-based groups available to choose from (e.g., velvet acid christ, skinny puppy, hocico, wumpscut, cruxshadows, kevorkian death cycle, android lust, dismantled, xorcist, in strict confidence, cenobita, etc.)
This CD is AWESOME!.......2003-03-30
I have two other Red Flag CDs: "Naive Art" and "Caveat Emptor", and this one is definitely my favourite!!! It is darker than the other two, but I think it is more interesting musically than their earlier CDs. I would highly recommend this cd, and if you only plan to buy one Red Flag CD, then this should be the one!
The Crypt Is Mesmerizing and Awesome!!.......2002-03-24
What an amazing and terrific album displayed by Red Flag! I love Mark's sexy and recognizable vocals!! The Reynolds brothers are totally awesome!! I have "Naive Art" and I absolutely love it! I love this album as well. My favs on here are "I See you", "The King of Everything", "Curtains", and "Heaven in Medias Res".I can't wait for the next cd, "Bitter End". I'm sure that will be amazing. GO RED FLAG!!!
Darker side of RED FLAG at its best................................2002-03-12
This is the defining RED FLAG album as they evolved into a new dark/synth sound that they are today. I am a big RED FLAG fan believe that CRYPT is one of their best albums yet. They have definatly changed their style from the synth-pop days of "Russian Radio" and "If I ever" but they are still all out electronic band as they have always been. There are very powerfull lyrics and music in this album and I have to say that is is much better than the later release of the "Fear of The Red Planet" that is similar but the lyrics and music is not as good as the ones on "CRYPT". This is a must have for all synth-pop, goth, EBM listeners.
I beleive that every songs in this album is great and alot of hard work was put into it and its is very obvious, yet I did not see that same hard work in the FEAR OF THE RED PLANET album. "CRYPT" is a very deep, dark, and moody synth album, it is accually considered to be very GOTHIK. I call their new style dark/synth. The Reynolds brothers RULE!!!!!!!

amazing music.......2004-10-26
I have all the Red Flag cd's and this is as good as, even better, than most.
Distorted vocals? Minimal. This isn't Skinny Puppy. These are the beautiful melodies Red Flag is known for, just with a slighly faster pace. It is an amazing cd by any measure and, for Red Flag itself, it's an amazing achievement.
I rediscovered Red Flag and love this album.......2003-02-20
Codebreaker T133 had me hooked from the first listen! I lost track of Red Flag shortly after they released Machines but just rediscovered them. I loved that track and all the singles off of Naïve Art. And I'm very happy with this release.
Major Disappointment.......2003-01-03
When I heard that Red Flag was releasing a fast-paced album programmed at 133 bpm, I was really excited, but "Codebreaker T133" turned out to be a major disappointment. As a long-time RF fan, I hate to say it, but "Codebreaker" is just plain bad--the worst CD that RF has ever released. It's been great that the Reynolds brothers have been releasing about two albums a year, but this one feels rushed and suffers from an utter lack of creativity and craftmanship. The songs are very monotonous, and worse, with the terrible distorted "scream" vocals that are used ad nauseum, the songs are downright irritating and unenjoyable. And you'd think that with eleven fast songs, there would be some good dance numbers, but no, there aren't. Not one. There's not a single infectious melody or beat on the entire album. To me, this album proves once and for all that Red Flag just can't make good dance music. "Codebreaker" is so inferior to albums like "Caveat Emptor" and "Eagle and Child" it's sad. I totally wasted my money on this album and I will not be buying another Red Flag release unless I'm absolutely convinced it's far superior to "Codebreaker T133."
Not what I expected..........2003-01-02
and nothing i really fancy. Sounds all the same. If you want a real KILLER ALBUM go and buy Naive Art or - for fans of the newer Red Flag - the fabulous Megablack Box Set including their Masterpiece "The Crypt". Thats hot!
Steve
Sorry but..........2002-12-27
...beeing a true fan i also give my true statement. I luved most of Red Flags Albums, especially EAGLE & CHILD and THE CRYPT were tremendous. But afterwards it went "downtown". I bought alle new Albums but missed the creative and clever songlines, the mix of cold synthsound and warm influence by RF's briliant voices. Now this album - which i had put all my hopes into was the complete disappointment (don't shoot me). First i feel ist not clever to go with one straight bpm-speed alltrough. U could also use always just one instrument for all ure tunes...the result is boring in most ways. Then I miss the wonderful and Red Flag unique way of building compositions that are so brilliant, melodic crwaling directly under the skin. No geese visited my skin while hearing this album ;0( But the most fatal thing is that the beautiful and brilliant voices of Mark and Chris dont get an chance on that disc. The rotten sound full of distorsion effects really kills the pleasure to relisten the tunes. And by using them again and again it all gets boring and annoying. I liked only one track of the album, also the last albums did not work out for me to be strong buys. Lst SMASHER was THE CRYPT that had only 100% per cent songs on it. Dunno what happened afterwards with RF. Maybe they shouldnt have given away their old equipment via on ebay. ;0) The new sound is much too technichal, cold and...in my ears does not sound as red flag used to sound in any period of time.
Okay, befor ue guys and fans start killing me i say the ususal. Its all just my opinion. Any artist is allowed to go his way and maybe some say this is a real evolution of RFs music. I said so much good bout them the last decade, made RF parties, bought hundreds of cds and vinlys for friends and so on, i think i am allowed to give also a negative statement right now.
I look forward to that retro-album with songs that never reached publication in earlier RF times. I am shure that past tense stuff will soon become some fave music for me again. And well...maybe present time will show another change and lead me back to my earlier "all-time-idols" who claim themself to be USA's best synthpop artists - an in fact they were...and maybe will be again.
Ahhh...sorry for my bad english. But did u prefer it german? :)

The night finds me in a peculiar mood to say the most, so i'll begin saying that Red Flags 'The Bitter End' has been everything i expected. I love the album cover, the colors and the images make me want to show it off to my friends like the pair of numchucks i bought last week. The only trouble is that the inside cover has a strange industrial smell for whatever reason. Red Flag is such a cool band because their sound is rare and is becoming near extinct. This album almost inspires me to do a Depeche Mode bashing review but i'll try to do otherwise. The Bitter End is moody and almost comparable to other Red Flag albums but still manages to find it's own uniqueness. The lyrics have an element of maturity that surpasses other bands that still dwell in the realms of teenage mope rock. Even if some of the lyrics are bent with a touch of angst, the sounds are memorable and make for great night time driving music. It surprises me how many of my friends dig Red Flag, i find myself having to explain who they are and then i always get asked how i found such a band. Never-the-less i am a big Red Flag fan and recommend any of their albums.
I love Red Flag!!.......2002-06-01
This new album is absolutely wonderful!! I love all the songs, lyrics, music!! My favs are the pyramid song, thin air, nobody's perfect, and barbed wire cuts. I now have all their albums from Naive Art, Naive Dance,The Crypt,Fear of a red planet, the lighthouse, eagle and child, caveat emptor,ep,megablack series, fear series, the bitter end, and now finally today i got Who are the skulls?. Wow! You can see I love Red Flag!! Thanks Mark and Chris!!
RED FLAG continues to keep it dark, sad and soft...............2002-05-15
I got this album 2 weeks before its official release date...I just couldn't wait to hear RED FLAG's new album. I have to admit that it is as thought but I wanted a little more. If you enjoy the newer style of RED FLAG sound, you will like this album. This album is sounds somewhere in between 'CRYPT' and 'THE FEAR OF THE RED PLANET', yet more mellow. The album is in a typical RED FLAG fasion as all lyrics are about love, loss, life and reality. The album is dark, sad, and on the slow side. The only song that you may find yourself dancing to is "The Pyramid Song". My other favorate tracks on this album include: "A life Worth Living", "Metropolis Kiss", "One Plus One" and "The Bitter End". I find this album to be less upbeat and GOTH sounding than the previous release of 'THE FEAR OF THE RED PLANET', and certainly not quiet as good as 'CRYPT'(one of RED FLAG's best...). Over all this is a good album and I was pleased. A must buy for all fans of synth-pop music.

If you think that musicals are only outsize, outlandish spectacles hatched on Broadway, The It Girl deftly shows that there are other options. This small show was created in 2001 at the York Theater--located in a church's basement, it's as close as you get to a barn in New York City. Loosely based on the 1927 Clara Bow vehicle It, the show gleefully runs through all the 1920s classic situations and characters: chases, flappers, mistaken identities, a boat cruise, a department-store heir, and fake French accentsit's all there. You can almost hear the ghost of P.G. Wodehouse, librettist for the Gershwins' Jazz Age classics, cheering. The It Girl breezes through thanks to its cast's game can-do energy and the strength of Paul McKibbins and B.T. McNicholl's perky tunes, which deploy nice melodic resources and make the most of a six-piece band. There's enough knowing pastiche here to keep the saccharine at bay, but the creative team also shows genuine resource and love for musicals as a genre. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Can't Get Enough of "It".......2006-02-11
I took my daughter to see a production of this at a theatre in Hopewell where I sometime perform. We really enjoyed the show, and my daughter asked me to buy her a copy if the CD. I can't stop listening to this show. Great score...great orchestrations and great performances. I'm going to buy myself a copy too.
This musical has IT!.......2005-04-14
Maybe I'm biased, because I'm friends with the composer... but I was not when I first saw this musical, and I fell in love with it. A truly toe-tapping score, and adorably witty lyrics. It's a charming gem of a show, and I recommend it to any music lover.
The characters are fun, the story is marvelously scandalous (in a family oriented way), and the performances are top-drawer!
Terrific!.......2003-05-18
Like another reviewer, was lucky enough to see this show at the York Theatre in Manhattan. A wonderful musical score and clever lyrics made this show an absolute delight. A must-have CD.
This show is "How Do You Say...?" (Ah, yes) AMAZINGLY GREAT!.......2003-03-17
This show has a STELLAR cast! The cast is relatively small, only consisting of three men and four women. The music is original and REALLY clever (and based in the 1920s...GREAT TIME)! I listen to this cast album MORE than any other (and I have A LOT of cast albums)! Some of the MOST appealing tracks are "A Perfect Plan," "Coney Island" and "Step Into Their Shoes"! This would be A GREAT show for small theatres or small companies of actors! You'll be glad you bought this cast album after you take the time to listen to it all the way through at least once. You'll find a few songs you like and listen to those OVER and OVER. Two weeks later you'll find a few more songs you like and do the same! ... This is an A+ show!
Wonderful show with great music and lyrics.......2002-10-05
My family loved this show. Our eight year old son kept singing the songs and humming the tunes. He even wanted to listen to it at bedtime. Very catchy lyrics with tunes that keep your feet tapping. The show is full of songs that continually creep into your mind during the day. I often found myself humming a tune or two over and over. Highly recommend.

No Plan B is Dope!.......2003-08-07
I'm an old brother (40-something) and I generally don't listen to hip-hop, but I got to check 4th Avenue Jones out in Phoenix in 2002 and I loved them. Tena's mother, who is a friend of mine then gave me a copy of No Plan B, and I purchased a copy of their other CD (called something about Gumbo, but I don't remember exactly what). Both are dope and No Plan B never leaves my CD changer and goes with me whenever I'm on the road. I'm looking forward to the day when these guys hit it big! I know it's just a matter of time. Much love to Ahmad, Tena and the rest of their crew !
HOLD ON TO SOMETHING...4th Ave is about to blow UP!!!!!!!!.......2001-05-15
Big props to Ahmad, Senoj, Tenajones, and the crew. The beats are tight, the lyrics -fresh and innovative, and the delivery -like none ever heard. My wife even digs them and she's not into hip-hop at all. With so many Hip-hop crews (christians and non) sounding so much the same it's about time someone drops something FRESH! Mark my words when the next CD drops they're gonna to BLOW UP---BIG!!!!!
HOLD ON TO SOMETHING...4th Ave is about to blow UP!!!!!!!!.......2001-05-14
I'm not going to waste alot of time...GET INTO 4Th Avenue Jones. They are creative, innovative, and TRUE. When you have so much hip-hop (Christians and Non) sounding the same it's nice to find something truly FRESH. Even my wife likes it!!!! Ahmad, Senoj, TenaJones, and the crew have God's hand on them. They get His message out without sounding "preachy" and don't hide a lack of talent behind the gospel. They are skilled artist who puts it down. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!!!! MARK MY WORDS WHEN THEY DROP THE NEXT ONE THEY WILL BLOW UP, BIG!!!!!!!
