Like her father before her, Anoushka Shankar is a musical eclectic experimenting with forms far beyond those of Indian classical music. Going even further than on her previous disc, Rise, Shankar, along with co-producer Karsh Kale, explores the meeting of electronica and India. "Burn" starts out as a romantic Bollywood theme before turning into a sultry soul tune with electronica beats, squiggly analog synths, and an impassioned vocal by Noah Lembersky. Shankar's sitar stutter glitches over a tabla-draped electronica rhythm on "Slither," courtesy of the Midival Punditz' Gaurav Raina. Guest singers appear on several tracks, including the ubiquitous Sting, who contributes his overly earnest voice to a power ballad called "Sea Dreamer." Shankar's sitar occasionally becomes a sidelight on her own album, leaping out for rock guitar-like breaks. She doesn't so much duet with Sting as accompany him. Her song for half-sister Norah Jones, on the other hand, integrates the singer's voice into a textural track of snaky sitar, as Jones mixes ethereal chorales and impassioned pleas. Much of Breathing Under Water recalls Bombay Dub Orchestra and their mixture of Bollywood strings, Indian musicians, and electronic grooves and textures. Both Kale and Shankar have writing credits on all but one composition, with their computer-concocted tracks often bridged by rhapsodic strings arranged by Bollywood composer Salim Merchant. His co-composition, "Little Glass Folk," brings an uncharacteristic Western classicism to the album, while the Anoushka and Ravi Shankar-composed work, "Oceanic," is the only piece aspiring to Indian classicism. Breathing Under Water is an ambitious album, although it has elements of pastiche, designed to expose Anoushka Shankar to a wider audience. --John Diliberto

4 out of 5 stars Make me feel serenity when all is revealed.......2007-07-25

Killswitch Engage, as they are now, are regarded as some of the best in their genre. I'm left wondering why people like the Killswitch Engage of now more than the Killswitch Engage of before. Sure their new singer (yes I said it...singer) is decent when it comes to screaming but when the time comes to let out an ear shattering scream, he comes up short sometimes. Jesse David Leach doesn't miss that opportunity ever. In fact, his singing is only really sprinkled in to give a song a little something extra...not to mention his singing voice is surprisingly great.

Enough bashing the band's new line-up though. I don't listen to Alive Or Just Breathing much but I've always held it in high regard. Yes, it does take some getting use to, but when all is said and done there are some true anthems on this CD that refuse to be forgotten. There's choruses you'll be left singing to yourself days after hearing it and there's beats that are sure to make any rock fan stand up and notice. This bands' refusal to be commonplace with their instruments is the only reason I even care about them now. And just as noticeable as it is now, it's certainly evident here as well. How they'll go from a break-neck fast riff to an all out beautiful melody at the drop of a hat is always entertaining.

Numbered Days is a great way to start out giving you every impression of how the rest of the CD is sure to follow. Fixation On The Darkness is the first song on AOJB that I was left knowing that I'd be listening to it for years to come, and I have. My Last Serenade's music is worth a listen alone. The verses are really great as well. Life To Lifeless is the shining point on this album. Excellent vocals, remarkable beats, and a catchy sing-along chorus are all key ingredients. Temple From The Within is one of the last truly unforgettable songs featured. Incredibly heavy with only a few melodic breakdowns, the verses really seem to be the main attraction. And finally, Rise Inside. As a closer you just can't go to wrong with this one.

My favorite songs are Numbered Days, Fixation On The Darkness, Life To Lifeless, Temple From The Within, and Rise Inside. Killswitch Engage, in my opinion, have went downhill since releasing this but I'll always retain hope that Jesse will come back. Far-fetched I'm sure, but I can dream. As far as Alive Or Just Breathing though, definitely worth checking into for any fan of heavy rock.

5 out of 5 stars It Grew On Me.......2007-07-13

After Killswitch Engage's As Daylight Dies, "Alive or Just Breathing" initally disappointed. After a few listens though, it really grew on me in a big way.

The sound is a bit more on the raw side, with a bit less processing on the grind vocals. However, that is compensated by the greater range in the clean vocals that occur in the songs.

There is a heavier and more pronounced "death-metal-like" feel to the music. It is heavy and the range of guitar work is more varied on this CD, (something that only became apparent as I paid attention to it). The guitars change from more deathy sounds to sheer pounding power chords in an instant. The result is a collection of songs that contain a lot of variety.

This CD has firmly established Killswitch Engage as one of my favourite bands. They are a tight unit, with a good solid sound that will cater to the heaviest of tastes. I really like this CD a lot.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2006-12-20

When I first got this c.d. I was not a big fan of it. I listened to it once and put it away. What a mistake that was. This is one of the best metal albums that I have heard. Best tracks are... all of them. This is pretty close to a masterpiece. Buy it.

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent Album.......2006-09-24

In an era where much of rock is fueled with misogyny and lumbering Nickelback-esque rhythms, Killswitch Engage is a breath of fresh air. Alive Or Just Breathing is an excellent album highlighted by the constant shift from pulverizing rhythms into melodic cleanly-sung choruses. Their change in dynamics rivals those of Disturbed's Believe. This album amounts to a fusion of almost death metal and melody. An even stronger contrast is the mix of thundering vocals with uplifting lyrics. That's because Killswitch Engage's lyrics are optimistic, singing about how "love will overcome", instead of focusing on death and destruction as so many bands do. In certain tracks, such as "Fixation on the Darkness", Jesse Leach (now replaced by Howard Jones) sounds like Tom Araya of Slayer, which is not a good thing. However, the heavier parts of their music remind me of a slightly slower Slayer (South of Heaven-esque); this is a good thing. The album contains no solos (The End of Heartache has one), but the music is still technically complex. The album is filled throughout with good songs, but obvious highlights are the opener "Numbered Days", "Fixation on the Darkness", "My Last Serenade", and the haunting interlude "Without a Name", which leads into the thundering and sensational closer "Rise Inside". The only possible flaw in this album is that at times it is TOO consistent, since every song is an alternation of heavy and soft, but that is a minor detail which is easily overshadowed by the best moments of the album. KSE's next album is more refined and technically complex and therefore slightly better, but credit this album with laying the foundation for the heavy/soft dynamics that flourish throughout this band's songs. This is an excellent album, very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars KE at their finest.......2006-06-30

This is KE at their finest. The songs on this album carry a meaning which is a welcome change from CDs that just babble on and on about nothing but blood and dying and the grave. Jesse's vocals are better than Howard's in my opinion. It's too bad Jesse left the band and started a band called Seemless, who aren't even that good. The best songs on this disc are Fixation on the Darkness, My Last Serenade, and Life to Lifeless.

    5 out of 5 stars I don't like New Age Music.......2006-03-26

But this is good music. I got this to do Tai Chi to and it works great . I've bought Cd's that are supposedly for Tai Chi and the flow required just isn't there. This cd is not only smooth and flowing enough for Tai Chi, but also 'quiet' and soft enough for meditation, and at the same time just nice enough to put on at home or in the car and just LISTEN to. It never sounds repetitive or too minimal , and yet it doesn't change so drastically in tempo or tone that Tai Chi or meditation is adversely affected. I love it and very highly recommend it.

Hypnotic ~ this is the utmost best albulm. Her music is breath-taking. It mentally catures you, takes you away to a magical place, then leaves you with a tingeling sense gladness. I listen to it all the time. I wish Jiang Xiao-Qing had more CD's ... I'd buy them all.

    5 out of 5 stars Come Back!!.......2007-05-26

No lie one of the best albums I have ever owned. It has been in my car since 2003...if someone knows the members of this band...please encourage them to get back together!!! I need more of there music...one album is not enough.

5 out of 5 stars a bright star that faded too fast.......2007-04-04

Like probably everybody else, I first heard of Revis from their single Caught In The Rain off of the Daredevil soundrack. I immediately loved the song and vowed to get the album of this band that I had never heard of. Wow, was I impressed! Places For Breathing, the one and only album from Revis, is strong stuff. I especially like Justin Holman's voice. It is very powerful and obviously sung with a depth and emotional quality that we don't get from a lot of lead singers. Caught In The Rain, the opening track, is a little harder than the rest of the songs here, but make no mistake; this is a great album from start to finish. It isn't music to bang your head to; rather, it is strong, thoughtful, mood-creating music for the contemplative rocker. My favorites on here are: Caught In The Rain (obviously), Seven, City Beneath, and Everything After. I really, really like Places For Breathing, and hope these guys get it back together and bring some more great alt-rock to the table. There's way too much musical talent here to let fade away after only one album.

5 out of 5 stars Favorite Rock CD.......2006-09-14

There comes only a few times in your life when you discover a CD that hits every emotion, cord, and musical taste in your body and soul. A CD that you play 35 times in 4 days and cant believe you havent gotten sick of it yet. Revis is the band that did it for me. I discovered this band during my senior year of college (3 years ago) on an internet radio station. "Seven" was the song. I turned the volume up in awe, realizing that I had come upon a song that I thought was above anything I had listened to recently. I immediately recognized that this was the same band that wrote "caught in the rain", a song that I had been listening to off of the "Daredevil" movie soundtrack for 6 months already. It took no thought to buy the CD or keep it as my music of choice for the next year. "Your Wall" hit nerves I had never felt before while weightlifting; "Look Right Through Me" and "Living Rooms" made me want to cry, and "Spin" helped me through the emotional toils of senior year. The band is rumored to have broken up, which in my mind is devastating. They will be forever one of the most potent rock bands I've ever listened to. A rock band that I will recommend to everyone and anyone who listens to music for that emotional appeal that is discovered only a handful of times throughout your life.

5 out of 5 stars Original lyrics and great sound.......2006-08-10

First heard a Revis song (Caught in the Rain) come out of a computer game and when I heard samples of the album I decided to give it a go... Good choice! This is an excellent CD with a good combination of solid, strong lyrics with variable paced melodies, Revis really know how to set the mood of their songs. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Dreamy, catchy, but a tad boring.......2006-04-12

Places For Breathing by Revis is a good, solid, alt rock album. And the disc has cool dreamy sound effects which kinda put peaceful feelings in you. But unfortunatly, most of the songs dont really have a hook that pulls you in and keeps you listening. There are a couple of good ones on here though, these include Caught In The Rain, Seven, Your Wall,Spin, and Re Use. I'd recomend you listen for yourself and see what you think.

Ben Lee got the jump on being a pop star by starting his career when other kids his age were more concerned with acne medication than writing the perfect love song. A lo-fi savant, Lee's humble approach and off-kilter, nasal wail called to mind his acknowledged idol Jonathan Richman. Here, at the ripe old age of 20, he has managed to maintain the precocious, friendly, and wide-eyed personality that influenced both Noise Addict and his early solo efforts, while graduating to more complex musical structures. Breathing Tornados sounds like it has an intravenous feed from early-'80s MTV, with electroriffs and catchy refrains coursing through the tubing. But luckily, Lee's lo-fi tendencies still rule the day and the synthesizers and computers are used with the same simple joy with which he bashed out nerd-rock love songs on his teenage guitar. --Lois Maffeo

5 out of 5 stars Breathing new life!!!.......2001-06-17

Okay it's 1999, just about every artist now days want to add some drum loop or some crazy computer effect in their songs. Now former Noise Addict Aussie (and Double Dare contestant!) is one of those artists who follow in that direction. But unlike other artists who uses the drum loop and samples as something "now "or gimmicky (like the awful Sugar Ray... "Every Morning" I have to listen to that ....ha ha), Ben Lee really uses it to it's advantage, breathing new life in his songs. These are not your basic four-track Ben Lee acoustic albums (Grandpaw Would and Something To Remember Me By) The opener, "Cigarettes Will Kill You", starts off with piano very reminiscent to Fiona Apple's "Fast As You Can". And has a great chorus, "I wish everyone was wrong." On song two, "Nothing Much Happens" features a monologue by Kids and Sonic Youth`s "Sunday" video director Harmony Korine. When song three comes, it sounds like Ben is getting his groove on "I Am A Sunflower" that sounds a bit like Barry White. Maybe it's the fact he's getting some from ex-My So-Called Life Star Claire Danes that Ben's lyrics sound more sensual than the other albums. Another factor in the writing of Breathing Tornados was that it was recorded in some guy's house that made some ...!? (Yes it's true, go to some site and read about it.) There are some classic Ben Lee songs "The Finger and the Moon" featuring very minimal organ and acoustic guitar with slow drumbeats. "Birthday Song" and "10ft. Tall" is just Ben with his guitar with barely any accompanying percussion. Want something jazzy or funky? Listen to "Nighttime" "Burn to Shine" or "Sandpaperback" (with Sean Lennon on guest vocals) Throughout the 12 songs on this album, Ben searches for someone he could be intimate with. Using "organic" or "electronic" methods, he sings with the passion to grab anyone listening. Sure, he does have some weird nasal thing in his voice, which may be hard for people to listen to. (C'mon he's Australian!) But give it a chance please.... This is one talented young man who may be the future of rock and roll!

Why do some people write reviews that don't tell us anything but that don't get it? Glen Velez is one of the great musicians of our time, and one of the more progressive thinkers as to the benifits of musics healing powers. I highly advise everyone to listen to the audio samples and go to Glenvelez.com to become better informed before writing senseless reviews. jb

      1 out of 5 stars I don't know what to say..............2001-02-08

How can a reviewer rate an album as "one-star", and then write only polite comments? I don't know. My personal experience with this album was unpleasant. Glen Velez wrote some facinating music with some very serious new-age philosophy to back it up. I truly understand where he wanted to go. Personally, this album missed it for me. My chakras (?) did not react the way the music intended. My reaction was contrary to the design of the music.

      5 out of 5 stars Something Different.......2001-01-07

This CD combines the simple melodies of pan flute, cello, and voice chant with complex and pleasing rythms, produced predominantly on frame drums. The mixture is suprising and delightful! Its not quite like anything else I've heard. Glen Velez is a composer who is thinking outside of the box. Most music has a complex melody with a simple backbeat, this is exactly the inverse of what you are used to! Try it, you'll like it!

This is not for the faint of heart. If you want to open the chakras, and eventually raise Kundalini, this is for you. You can do it once a week or so, but to REALLY get in there and open things up, do it once a day. Be ready for your emotional 'stuff' to be brought to the surface though. The meditation is intense, beautiful, healing. The results appear quickly (if doing daily). I recommend you arm yourself with a bit of Kundalini knowledge and be prepared for some intense emotional clearing. Then, enjoy the ride.

      Album Description

Written and played almost entirely by Vini Rielly, the album is built out of ideas generated over the last year and was inspired by African hip hop, traditional Jewish music (Kletzer) and 1930's piano music by Art Tatum. The 12 tracks were created over 3 months in a room 'not much bigger than a broom cupboard' using only one microphone and whatever time and equipment Reilly and the album's programmer Ben Roberts had spare. This inventiveness adds to the richness of Reilly's amazing 'honey wrapped in sandpaper' guitar playing. The gorgeous song 'Maggie' samples a school choir he heard on the BBC 14 years ago, while other tracks such as the defiant 7 minute long love song, 'Let Me Tell You Something' are just as powerful and reflective, showing the positive frame of mind Vini was in when making the record. The new album is more polished and less haphazard than his previous efforts and Durutti Column have also committed to touring it extensively in 2006, with a live band consisting of Kier Stewart who has produced The Fall, Badly Drawn Boy and Elbow, the now legendary Bruce Mitchell on drums and John Metcalf on viola. Track listing: Nina, It's Wonderful, Maggie, Helen, Neil, Big Hole, Let me Tell You Something, Lunch, Gun, Tuesday, Agnus Dei, Waiting.

5 out of 5 stars More Great Durutti Column.......2006-07-20

I've been a fan of The Durutti Column ever since their first single; LIPS THAT WOULD KISS / MADELEINE 12 inch 11/1980. KEEP BREATHING is a real stand out in my book because it captures the mood and magic of Vini Rielly's earliest releases while also exploring new ground in a very fitting way. I'm not surprised to read that Vini created this one almost entirely on his own. I think his solo work is his strongest. The EP Heaven Sent released before this album is similar and worth checking out.

4 out of 5 stars Durutti Column keeps moving on.......2006-04-28

What a fantastic new record. "Nina", a strong opener, brings all of DC's trademarks - Vini's vocals and overlapping guitar, great percussion with a tight production. "It's Wonderful" keeps the momentum with its neverending looping guitars. "Let Me Tell You Something" is classic, powerfully mixing genres. The closing track, "Waiting", is probably DC's most beautiful and emotionally charged song. Fans will love it. New listeners will definitely want to revisit DC's whole back catalogue.

      5 out of 5 stars Practical, Useable, & Profound.......2007-04-19

The best review I can offer is from my experience. The more I listen actively to this CD--*doing* what is suggested, practicing in the moment, applying it and playing with it throughout the day--the more I experience changes in every area of my life. This work has touched to my speaking, singing, sleep, attention, spiritual exercises, posture, movement and more. I recently completed the Los Angeles Marathon, and using the tools in this CD literally helped carry me through the final miles of the route. I am discovering a range with my voice and how my body can support my vocal expression that surprises me. This material opens doors, and that is how I am inspired to share it with others. Please check it out for yourself. There is a lot of value and beauty here, and a real gift from a masterful heart. Many thanks to William.

5 out of 5 stars Breath technique with superb confidence building for singers and speakers and everyone else!.......2007-04-19

Look no further! If you got to this cd,you found the keys to making the most of your vocal potential and boosting your professional confidence in one place. I have been blessed with studying in person with William, and I promise his breath control/vocal production instructions do the job. You must persevere in implanting and supporting the new breathing habits, and overcome backsliding, but I tell you it's worth the effort.
The middle section of the cd is a fabulously expansive and liberating and beautiful sequence of affirmations exquisitely designed to release all our programmed negative beliefs that may otherwise block our freedom to sing and present ourselves confidently in public to an audience. William recommends listening in silence for at least 30 days, but beyond that I like to say them out loud after him. My voice purrs.
The third section is a creative visualisation exercise designed to expand our creative faculties, capacity and receptivity, and again very beautifully done. Ignore naysayers, I urge you to buy the cd,it's a treat!

5 out of 5 stars Empowerment & Understanding How to breathe in 12 minutes.......2007-02-27

Much of my work is conducting presentations/seminars, and conducting psychotherapy sessions. I found this CD to be excellent for increasing and understanding how vocal power works. The fact that Hanrahan describes, illustrates, and shows how to practice his techniques in this fast-paced section of the CD is amazing. Tight, flowing, and easy to understand. I like this. The next section using guided imagery was very intriguing to me, as he guides the listener through a practice, then points out that you have just done something you may not have believed you could do. Impossible to argue with the fact you have just done it! An excellent technique, quickly building belief and confidence. I am looking forward to listening to Section 3 very soon, which I will comment upon in this arena.

3 out of 5 stars Mostly affirmations and guided imagery - no voice training.......2006-07-17

This CD has 3 parts - 1) an overview of Structural Breathing (13 min); 2) relaxation and affirmations (35 min), and 3) guided visualization (25 min).

Structural breathing is based on "apoggio" - breath control technique, used by Caruso and described in the book "Caruso and Tetrazzini on the art of singing" by Enrico Caruso and Luisa Tetrazzini edited by Dover Publications. I have found that the CD "Voice Lessons to Go", vol. 1, for example, contains breathing and vocalization exercises that make it easier to comprehend and practice this kind of breathing, even in the book "The 3 dimensional voice" has lovely graphic descriptions and numerous practical exercises for ehnacing the richness of the voice.

In this first part of the CD, there are few suggestions I have found inappropriate "Breathing through your nose weakens you", "Abdominal breathing weakens you", "Placing your tongue on the roof of your mouth weakens you" (the last may be meaningful to those who are practicing energy circulation). The author says that placing the tongue on the roof of the mouth "shuts off the switch" related the circulation of the energy. Nothing could be further from the truth - placing the tongue on the roof of the mouth connects two main meridians in the body and anyone who is actually actively engaged in working with energy circulation, through practices such as microcosmic orbit can attest to that from personal experience (the experience is very tangible, noticeable and empowering).

As jeannie Deva, the author of the "Contemporary Vocalist" improvement course mentioned - over the years of working and talking with many vocal teachers about the proper methods of breathing and singing and finding numerous discrepancies, she finally decided to pick up books on anatomy and find out for herself. I suggest you too do some more research and experimenting before taking for granted the information presented on this CD.

Just keep on repeating such suggestions for a while and notice what happens and since the author mentions kinesiology, you may as well repeat these kinds of suggestions and then do kinesiology when you are breathing through your nose (which I suppose most people do throughout the day) and notice what kind of suggestions are you impressing upon your subconscious mind.

The second part of this CD contains about 5 minutes of relaxation and 30 minutes of affirmations - mostly forgiveness affirmations that cover all possibilities - here are few examples:

I release and forgive myself for being good at singing.
I release and forgive myself for not being good at singing.
I release and forgive myself for liking the sound of my voice.
I release and forgive myself for not liking the sound of my voice.
I forgive myself for being nervous when I use my voice.
I forgive myself for not being nervous when I use my voice.
I release and forgive myself for being good at communication.
I release and forgive myself for not being good at communication.
I release and forgive myself for enjoying my voice.
I release and forgive myself for not enjoying my voice.

The third part is guided visualization (20 min) set to a music of Tranquil Harp designed to help you alter perception, set boundaries, enhance creativity, flexibility, and your ability to visualize.

This CD does not contain any voice training techniques - for that you should get either voice teacher or voice training CDs (or both). The main focus of this CD seems to be on helping you to summon the courage to express yourself.

      4 out of 5 stars A Voice With Character.......2006-03-15

I have scripted meditations for myself before and they have been very powerful. It was with a lot of input on my part, but I used a book called Creating the Work You Love, by Rick Jarow. Excellent book to say the least. With this background, I got this Voice Power CD, the first time I listened to someone else's scripted meditation. He is a man of great character speaking to people with great character. Meaning people who really care and want to share and help. Very inspiring. I gave it a 4 because the first section on how to breathe didn't really speak to me all that well. I am into the power of breathing deeply and getting into a very healthy and relaxed and receptive state, and I believe in it highly, I'm probably just not open to someone telling me how. I had voice lessons and encountered the same problem. So essentially, the second two sections are what I plan to listen to over and over again. And I do believe it has and will make a difference in my life. Believe it or not, I was able to speak up about inequalities and injustices and made $100,000.00 in the process. It actually came out in the form of rage at the circumstances and from deep within, almost like an explosive force that I didn't even know was going to erupt so suddenly. So the voice cd here, is actually, more attuned to sweet and harmonious sounds, being balanced, being clear, being thoughtful and caring, and being able to say what you have to say with that kind of approach. And that it the type of person I normally and habitually am, but from my experience, it has helped me to speak up powerfully in an adverse and challenging type of situation as well, where other people refuse for the most part to see, and to demand that they see and even make resolution.
