A very pleasant take on Baroque music.......2007-05-23

Unfortunately, pleasant is the best I can say of this recording although it is delightful background music. Take well-known Baroque scores, re-instrument them for a jazz ensemble, add soloists - violin, cello, classical guitar, pennywhistles, records ... , modify the rhythm to a slight swing, ... and you achieve the smooth, lulling sounds of this recording. While the resulting sound is interesting and distinctive baroque, the modifications add no additional depth to the music. It is well worth listening to the recording once or twice but it doesn't standup to the originals in the longrun.

Sublime Sibongile...........2005-08-11

Sibongile Khumalo is one of the national treasures of South Africa and the possessor of a voice that deserves a much wider audience. With a repertoire that spans classical -- she has been an acclaimed Carmen -- jazz, and pop and a canny musical intelligence that enlightens even the occasionally too-sweet arrangements that burden a couple of the "Ancient Evenings" tracks, she rarely fails to dazzle.

Having heard Khumalo live, I can attest that this album is only a limited introduction -- albeit a good one -- to a free-wheeling talent that has yet to be fully captured on record.

Succesor to Miriam Makeba.......2004-06-05

I had the pleasure of hearing Sibongile Khumalo perform in concert honoring Miriam Makeba at Fort Hare in South Africa. Khumalo talked at length about the influence of Makeba on her and, as someone who has a couple of Makeba albums, it seems to come through on the album. Khumalo uses a lot of call and response, but her voice is never overshadowed by it. Stylistically, she reminds me a bit of Cassandra Wilson, but only in the following ways. It is clear to me that she takes seriously phrasing, timing and musical space on her songs. Also, she takes material that in other hands might sound trite and makes it sound substantial. BTW "Untold Story" is the song that got me hooked on Khumalo.

This album really shows the beauty of Sibongile's voice. Both intense and floaty, you'll find yourself putting it on loop. There's one song, number three, that is a little cringe-worthy, but without it this would be a definite 5. Enjoy!
