Straight out of Northumbria come Cuig, a five-member Celtic band that does for northern England what Scandinavian folk revivalists such as Väsen are doing for Sweden. Penning new songs in a traditional vein or rearranging classic jigs and reels with whirlwind tempos, the band is just as apt to toss a curve. Witness the South African township guitar introduction and interwoven fiddle theme to the continent-straddling title cut. "The Peacock" sports a 10/8 tempo, Balkan-flavored midsection purely for sport, while the two-part "The Bachelor" courts whimsy by kicking off the trad favorite "St. Kilda's Wedding" with a funky Fender bass riff. "The Pig" sits atop a 12-bar-blues structure, and "American Spire" tears up bluegrass inventor Bill Monroe's "Wheel Hoss" as a speed reel before dousing a homegrown reel in Kentucky moonshine. Even Bill Whelan of Riverdance fame gets Cuigged via an accordion and fiddle rendering of a theme from his ambitious Seville Suite in the first slice of the triptych "The Mooncoin." Whew. Just listening to these overachievers is dizzying. --Bob Tarte

This, Anonymous 4's final recording, is a break from their usual "early music" periods and locations; it presents American music, religious in nature, from the 18th and 19th centuries. And it's absolutely beautiful from start to finish. Their normal, exquisite technique and purity here blend to sound the way we imagined the ladies' choir in church meetings in America past might have sounded: sweet, sincere, and with harmonies recognizable yet somehow fresh. Some of the songs begin with the women singing "fa, so la" exercises, which was called "shape note" singing because some places taught singing with notes as shapes--circle, rectangle, diamond, triangle. But it's the music that counts, and there are treasures here. They include two versions of "Amazing Grace," one familiar, one with an unusual melody and a piece called "Blooming Vale" which is as sophisticated as anything on their previous albums. "Shall We Gather at the River" is performed with a clarity and loveliness that makes us forget that it's normally sung as background to movies about the Great Depression. The foursome sometimes sing in rich harmonies and occasionally alone or in pairs or trios. This is glorious Americana and highly recommended. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars spiritual americana.......2007-01-06

I have some of the older Anonymous 4 recordings which are more medieval
and gregorian in style (I love them!). They move on to cover spiritual
basics of the 1800s. If you like classical music, perfect harmonies
and spiritual americina, then you will be blessed!

5 out of 5 stars Rich Heritage.......2006-10-11

Anonymous 4 consistently produces exquisite and authentically beautiful recordings and this one presents early American hymns in ways few groups can manage. Some tunes are highly recognizable while others are 'new' to me but a refreshing reminder of the singing heritage of religious societies in times past. For those who enjoy old hymns and authentic renderings, this is a must buy.

5 out of 5 stars Superb .......2006-08-07

This collection of American Christian music is not only an enthralling musical experience but a spiritually uplifting one as well. Anonymous Four have transferred their luminous vocal quality to a new space with perfect success.

5 out of 5 stars Can't walk away from it!.......2006-08-07

My only "complaint" about the CD is that I absolutely HAVE to sit and listen to the entire thing whenever I start it up! I usually have music playing in the background while doing other things, but not this one! There are no tracks that I find myself wanting to skip over as in most collections. In fact, I usually find myself going back and listening to selected tracks again (and again and...) after taking the hour+ to listen to the whole thing through once.

These four ladies produce a unique and remarkable sound. I can't recommend it enough.

5 out of 5 stars Mana from Heaven.......2006-05-08

I think the title of this CD is perfect. I first heard an interview for this CD on Public Radio and fell in love. I had never heard Anonymous 4 before then but look for all I can find of their music now. The title is perfect as the women sound like Angels and the music lifts the spirit. I find myself singing the old version of Amazing Grace all the time now. Incredible and a huge blessing to all who hear it.

5 out of 5 stars American Music of Hope and Glory.......2007-04-09

Although I have known about Sacred Harp Music for many years, this album utterly overwhelmed me in its power, beauty and expression of pure American strength and faithful surety. I grew up in the churches of Christ, one of the few American denominations that uses only a capella four-part harmony vocal music in their worship services. Shape notes were known to me since I was able to understand a musical staff, and we used shape notes for each note on the scale (a few more than The Sacred Harp Tradition). Alas, over time, the immense power and beauty of true Sacred Harp music was "homogenized" into congregational singing that remains quite beautiful, but no longer has the vigor of The Sacred Harp tradition. (The churches of Christ still, to this day, occasionally have "Sings" - an all afternoon singing festival with food and fellowship, as do Sacred Harp "Singing Classes" today). This album above all speaks - rather SINGS to the immense faith of Frontier America, and the absolutely majesterial beauty of music well-sung from the human heart, which is, of course, The "Sacred Harp". To any who want to experience a new (and very old) musical tradition, this recording will be one that you will never forget. All choral music singers and admirers should own this marvelous album. (Having a copy of the "1991 Sacred Harp Hymnal" in hand will make your enjoyment all the better!)

5 out of 5 stars Unbridled spiritual energy.......2005-01-01

Anyone who saw "Cold Mountain" and was struck by the vitality and energy of the hymn singing in that one brief scene in church will be immediately impressed with this stunning album. The album's only flaw is that, unfortunately, it does not include that hymn that was in "Cold Mountain" (it is titled "I'm Going Home").

Otherwise, it is pure joy to listen to. The singing is full of that same raw passion that makes it sound so primitive. I've heard other albums where the sound is polished, concert-hall like, and as a result very dead. This is not that way; it moves and stirs as good spiritual music ought to.

This is a new field of music for me, even though I've sung in church choirs for years and listened to all kinds of classical music. Hearing this album makes me want to go find the sheet music and start singing it myself, it is so infectious.

Album Description

2005 single on the Fat Cat label from the Animal Collective and British folk chanteuse Vashti Bunyan.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Collaboration.......2006-01-15

Step outside of the mainstream for a moment, and you'll encounter plenty of wonderful bands and artists.

Among these are the band Animal Collective and the singer Vashti Bunyan, who join forces to create the "Prospect Hummer" EP. And it turns out that their styles mesh very well, whether it's Bunyan's tranquil folk, or Animal Collective's enchantingly offbeat pop ditties.

It starts with Bunyan singing softly over rippling guitars, before they blossom into a soft bed of strings, piano and murmurs. "It's You" is a very quiet song, but the bursts of barely-restrained music give the impression that Collective could easily have burst out of its boundaries.

From there on, things get a bit odder and poppier. "Baleen Sample" is a swirling psychedelic experience that is pleasant, though not musical. The remaining two songs are more accessable, with the title track as a bouncy little folk song with lots of people singing "wah wah wah wah!", and the final song as a skipping little guitar melody.

Many collaborations are done with all the wrong people. In the case of "Prospect Hummer," it's with the right people -- Collective makes lovely music, and Bunyan hs a lovely voice, and neither is trying too hard to take center stage.

Animal Collective strays a bit from their usual style, retaining the same flavour but making the music more restrained and folky, rather than being as deliciously weird as their individual albums. They do break loose in "Baleen Sample," with the swirling mix of claps, fast-strumming guitar, and countless indistinguishable instruments and noises.

Bunyan shines in particular in this. She gets drowned out at times in the title song, when other people are singing harmony with her. But the other songs show her beautiful, soft voice off to best advantage, paired with restrained guitars and little chiming bells. It's enough to make you race for her solo albums.

Vashti Bunyan and Animal Collective created a lovely, strange little EP in "Prospect Hummer," showing off their talents without diminishing the other performers. Here's hoping they collaborate again.

I got this CD because of the title track - "Fred the Cat." The music is lyrical, incorporating many themes and styles from the Caucasus and Armenian traditions. Hovhaness writes well for both the piano and orchestra ("The Mysterious Mountain" being his best-known composition)and I enjoyed the flow and variety of the music on this CD. Fred must have been quite a cat!

4 out of 5 stars Another solid album from Hindle.......2005-09-01

James Hindle delivers another solid album filled with Alt-Country songs. Which is interesting as he is from England. He is joined on this album by members of The Ladybug Transistor, Vetiver, and Espers. Silence and Birthday Candle are among my favorite tracks. He had a song on The OC from his last album Prospect Park (which reminded me more of Neil Young's Harvest in sound and texture) and this seems to build off a slightly happier time in his life.

      5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Record.......2004-04-01

Please note that a previous reviewer forgot to select a star rating. I strongly disagree with the 2 star review. I'm not a critic or an expert on English folk/rock, but I know what I like. I have 3 Fairport Convention cds and 4 Steeleye Span cds. I like The Prospect Before Us better than all of them. I ordered this cd just so that I could be exposed to the artist. Was I surprised! This is one of the most enjoyable cds I have ever heard. I play it a lot and it doesn't get stale. My friends, their kids, and even my folks like it. My father has an aversion to anything with drums, but after he heard this cd, he wanted me to find him a video of the band playing. He insists that the dance numbers are a sort of rowdy polka, and therefore, are acceptable. I particularly like the boisterous dance numbers. Merry Sherwood Rangers is amazing. The alternative bonus track version is not quite as intense, but differs enough to make it an interesting and valuable bonus. A beautiful cacophany of bizarre antique instruments. The only thing I can compare the mood to is the Mekons. A music-playing party. Prospect's dance numbers are all about powerful rhythm. As great as Fairport is, their rock oriented numbers seem mostly blues-based, and I definitely prefer the faster straightahead rhythm of the Albion Dance Band. Although the musicianship is topnotch, it is as if the band is celebrating. This cd has a joyous, reckless feel that is infectious. The more traditionally performed English folk songs are delightful. In my ignorance, I had assumed that the English had gotten most of their music from the Scots and Irish. These wonderful folk songs are convincing me that the English have as rich a folk music tradition as any. This cd is worth the money just for Rangers alone. Throw in some more dance tunes, some lovely folk songs, a Christmas song, and a couple of nifty sea shanty-sounding tunes, and it is unbeatable. The AllMusicGuide people give this record high marks and are right as usual.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting, risk-taking outing yields no treasures..........2000-06-20

The same outfit (or most of these same musicians) assembled by Ashley Hutchings created something far more memorable on the sadly and unacceptably deleted "Son Of Morris On" (EMI catalogue number 7243 8 29861 2 6", or sometimes listed in a shorter form as EMI 29861), a 1976 follow-up to earlier "Morris On". "Prospect" tries to reach for something, and although nothing really drags here, there are no precious jewels of songs either. If you must, try "Battle Of The Field" or "Rise Up Like The Sun", each worth about 3 stars in my book. "Son Of Morris On", also featuring Hutchings with John Tams, Simon Nicol, Martin Carthy, Shirley Collins Hutchings, Phil Pickett and others, though, is really the one that should have been re-issued by Rykodisc. That was musical greatness on a high scale, and it's a shame it's not around anymore. See if you can find a nice vinyl copy of that if that's the only format you can find it on - still worth it!

        Album Description

For British folk-balladeer, James William Hindle, the second time's the charm. On Prospect Park, his second full-length album, there are the same wistful, delicately-strummed melodies strewn with hope and acoustic longing that garnered critical praise for his self-titled debut album. However on Prospect Park, there's also the definite sound of a maturity found. After over a year of touring the US with bands like The Essex Green and The Ladybug Transistor and appearing on a compilation with Elliott Smith, Bright Eyes, and Spoon, among others, James' musical persona has just begun to spread its wings. For those keen-eared listeners who detect a faint Elephant-6-esque thread running through the songs on Prospect Park, James is ably backed up on these proceedings by members of The Essex Green, The Ladybug Transistor, Sunshine Fix, and Aden.

As an amateur pianist, I was awed by the feeling of absolute freedom of spirit this music evoked in me. It is breathtakingly lovely in its haunting simplicity. The music draws you into itself, soaring into heights of joy and falling into hushed depths of winsome poignancy. What a gift Alan Hovhaness has for speaking for and to the human spirit of all that is lovely and delicate and magnificent.
