Critics may quibble over the creative roller coaster that's been Paul McCartney's post-Beatles solo career, but few can deny his status as one of rock's most buoyant live performers and consistent crowd pleasers. That drive to stake his claim onstage (said to be one of the factors that drove the Fabs to dissolution) energizes this otherwise largely backward-looking collection of performances from his 2002 world tour; fully two-thirds of the double-disc's 35 tracks hail from the Beatles catalog, with the rest slanted toward early solo-career standouts like "Jet," "Maybe I'm Amazed," and "My Love." But Mac and his focused backing quartet deliver them with a punchy edge and sense of abandon that's largely MIA on previous McCartney live releases. Other than pausing for tributes to his fallen comrades ("Here Today," a solo acoustic paean to John Lennon followed by a touching, ukulele-backed nod to George Harrison with "Something"), it's largely a rollicking career retrospective from a musician whose restless drive to perform invests this collection with something more than mere nostalgia. The singer who invoked Bach at 22 may still refuse to act his age, but here that's not a bad thing at all. --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description

A Very Good Live Set by Paul McCartney.......2007-06-15
"Back in the U.S. - Tour 2002" is not the first live album by McCartney. Here are some highlights:
* "Wings Across America": This was the only live album released under the Wings umbrella. It was released in 1976 and consists of a mix of McCartney's Beatles and post-Beatles material.
* "Tripping the Fantastic Live": A 1990 release that covers Beatles material through material done on 1989's "Flowers in the Dirt". It also consists of covers such as Fats Domino's "Aint that a Shame".
* "Unplugged": A 1991 live set of stripped-down, acoustic versions of McCartney's material as well as covers.
* "Paul is Live": A 1993 live album in support of his "Off the Ground" album. Mostly Beatles, McCartney solo material, and covers. There is very little Wings material here.
This is a terrific set. Here are 10 points to take from this set.
1.While the liner notes don't say it, I believe it is safe to assume that the material is taken from many nights throughout that 2002. For the most part - there is something magical about hearing a great performance on a single night captured on a collection. I find that taking live songs from different concerts on different nights, the flow is disrupted. You also don't get the opportunity to hear the CD as if it were the concert preventing you from getting the full experience. However, this collection does a nice job at getting as close to creating a single night experience as possible.
2.While the music is outstanding, I would have liked more in terms of dialogue with the audience. I've seen McCartney in concert and he really connects with the audience. It would have been nice to hear some of that in the collection.
3.I like how the collection starts with "Hello Goodbye" and ends with "Sgt Peppers/The End". These were almost the perfect "start" and "end" songs for this collection.
4.McCartney assembles a terrific band for this tour consisting of Rusty Anderson on guitars, Paul "Wix" Wickens on keyboards, Brian Ray on bass, and Abe Laboriel Jr. on drums. McCartney alternates between guitars, bass, and piano throughout the concert. The top-notch band really helps add to the electricity of the performance. Most notable is Laboriel Jr.'s performance on the drums. Laboriel Jr. might be the best drummer in the world that many people don't know about. His drums are thundering throughout the concert. On the final track "The End" he is completely worthy of the epic drum solo in that song. As much as I love Ringo Starr - Laboriel Jr. is the better drummer.
5.As mentioned, McCartney alternates between guitar, bass, and piano. McCartney - as he typically does will structure his concert around a guitar set, an acoustic (i.e "unplugged" set), and a piano/keyboard set. The best set is McCartney's piano/keyboard set that comes up at the end of the concert. I do admit, the acoustic set is a bit on the long side.
6.Perhaps the most interesting song is McCartney's "Ukulele" version of George Harrison's legendary Beatles contribution "Something". This is part of the acoustic set. Despite the stripped down version of the song, McCartney is able to convey the power and emotion that this song is so rich in.
7.There is a lot of material on here - 35 songs, but of course there is a lot of material missing. It is almost impossible to get everything on this collection. I would have liked to have seen "Flowers in the Dirt" material, but that is available on "Tripping the Fantastic Live". One could easily Monday Morning Quarterback and say they would want songs like "With a Little Luck", "Silly Love Songs", "Michelle", etc.
8-Other noteworthy performances on the collection are "Maybe I'm Amazed", "Live and Let Die", "Let Me Roll It", "The Fool on the Hill", "Back in the USSR", and "Eleanor Rigby". There are no bad songs on this collection - everything is quality.
9.If you haven't heard McCartney do "Hey Jude" live, you must hear it. McCartney creates a true performance in which he gets everyone in attendance involved. While the version on this album is not as good as the performance on the "Live in Red Square DVD", this version will still give you a good feel for how he gets the audience involved.
10.The liner notes consist of write-ups by McCartney and each of the band members reflecting on the tour. This is really good stuff.
Overall this is an extremely good collection by McCartney - and it might be the strongest one when compared to the other McCartney live collections that are out there. If you are looking to get hold of McCartney live material, this is the place to start.
The live show dilemma.......2007-03-19
The playlist on BACK IN THE U.S. is nothing less than spectacular; performances are better than competent-- McCartney is in good voice and the backup's right-on with their renderings of oh-so-familiar tunes. Paul's occasional lyric lapses are forgivable, and because of tight editing, crowd noise isn't much of a distraction. So what's wrong with this album?
Simply put: it's not all that easy to listen to, mainly due to a too-high volume level. Even gentle songs like "Yesterday," "Here, There And Everywhere," "Mother Nature's Son," "Eleanor Rigby" and "Fool On The Hill" are unpleasantly harsh because they're just TOO LOUD. And the supposed-to-be-loud songs are quite deafening.
Live albums invite such criticisms, and more. If the musicians choose to reinterpret old favorites, the cry of "Blasphemy! How dare they!" is heard, and if they remain as faithful to the studio tracks as possible, then the complaint is "you may as well stick with the originals." It's a no-win.
Being at a great live performance is exciting for the audience, yet a transcription of the same show rarely captures the acoustics, the feel or the mood. Such is the case here. To be fair, this is as fine a Paul McCartney live album as he's ever released. But that only means all of them are in some way flawed.

Great band feeling........2007-01-11
The band is extremely in harmony with the McCartney point of view.
Tracks are very similar to the original feeling.
I prefer the Wings and the McCartney discography that the Beatles discography and anyway this CD contains much Beatles songs than McCartney and Wings.
You can't loose "Jet", "Let me roll it", "Coming up" and more.
Superlatives!!!!!!!!!
Yes maybe the sound mix is not perfect - I'm not competent - but the spirit of the music there is in large quantity.
Superb performance.......2007-01-11
There are the obligatory Hey Jude, Let It Be, Live and Let Die, etc... along with enough songs that he'll probably only play once (Hello Goodbye, Lonely Road, Mother Nature's Son, Getting Better, Something,...) to make it all worthwhile.
Although McCartney is usually true to the original studio version, he mixes things up enough to make the concert interesting. "Something" on the ukelele, We Can Work it Out on a simple guitar, Carry that Weight on a plain piano, Sgt Pepper blended with the Abbey Road medley, etc...
The only "ouch" is Freedom, the If I Had A Hammer 9/11 sound-a-like which borders on painful.
On the other side of the equation, you have Lonely Road - a real sleeper. One of my favorites - I'm surprised it never really caught on.
And here is heresy: Can't Buy me Love and I Saw Her Standing There sound more exciting and vibrant than on the Beatles' studio album. Even My Love - unadulterated mush on the studio version - nearly sounds good as a result of McCartney's remarkable vocal gyrations.
People will listen to this concert 100 years from now and say "wow".

Excellent.......2005-10-08
If you're wondering if you should buy this INSTEAD of the Live 2002 DVD, I'd rule against it. Although I believe this would be wonderful for someone who's looking for a good comedy album to accompany him on a long car drive (like me). There's also some great material on here that's not present on the DVD. In any case, it would be hard for me to give this anything other than 5 stars.
Hilarious.......2005-03-30
Surprising retro to his older days.......2004-05-21
All that being said, he hasn't lost the touch at all! I found that I was laughing despite myself at several points, and in awe of the raw amount of energy he still has. His format has not changed much, either, as he skewers politicians, terrorism, celebrities, and silly American practices and vanities.
The double disc format is a good one, as the listener gets a feel for the different crowds and cities that were played to over the course of the tour.

An excellent reminder of your Ozzfest experience.......2003-08-16
If I can only say one word about this album, I'd say AWESOME.......2003-03-30
More Human Than Human and 3. Ill Nino - Liar
1. Ozzy Osbourne - War Pigs: Great song. Great guitar, the fans go insane in the background and it's OZZY OSBOURNE. 5/5
2. System Of A Down - Needles: A pretty decent song, but not as good as the studio version though, but a good song though. 4/5
3. Rob Zombie - More Human Than Human: Finally, the Zombie gets on the Main Stage, deservingly so. And they did a great White Zombie song as well. 5/5
4. P.O.D. - Outkast: Good song, this song never did get any respect on the studio version, but it's great live. 4/5
5. Drowning Pool - Creeping Death: My favourite song right now, A Metallica cover (I'm not sure if Metallica is pleased or not. Hehehehehehehehe)that was really good, but DP's version I think is better. Just simply great. 5/5
6. Adema - Freaking Out: A decent song, but not much impressive though. 2/5
7. Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society - Berserkers: Another great song, much like Ozzy's War Pigs, it's simply an awesome song. 5/5
8. Down - Ghosts Along The Mississippi: As far as this song goes, this band has got the best singer: Phillip Anselmo. You add members of Pantera, EYEHATEGOD and Crowbar together and you make Down. This song is the best Down song. 5/5
9. Hatebreed - A Call For Blood: Not so imprssive. 2/5
10. Soil with Zakk Wylde - Halo: Again, it's not so good. It only gets a 3 because Zakk Wylde is in it. 3/5
11. Flaw - Payback: Pretty decent. 3.5/5
12. 3rd Strike - All Lies: I'd say, it's not that good. 2/5
13. Pulse-Ultra - Big Brother: Do you think that at the second stage the songs get worse as it goes on, still pleasing though. 3/5
14. Ill Nino - Liar: This song, along with Down, are the only two best songs on the second stage. 5/5
15. Meshuggah - New Millenium Cyanide Christ: Another song that's worth listening to. 4.5/5
16. Andrew W.K. with Kelly Osbourne - She Is Beautiful: Pretty good. Unfortunately, Kelly's appearance docked 2 points. Sorry Kell. 3/5
My thoughts, and I'm keeping them. I wonder what Ozzfest 2003 is gonna be like. I know one thing..... LINKIN PARK'S COMING BACK!
Good Ozzfest,some low points.......2003-01-02
1.Ozzy's War Pigs 5/5-This song would be better if he actually sang but I'll give him a 5 cause' he's Ozzy.
2.System's Needles 5/5-Really good song from a great band. It's a little different from the album version.
3.Zombie's More Human than Human 4/5- Nothing special.
4.P.O.D.'s Outkast 2/5-I was really disapointed when I heard this song. I like P.O.D. but this song is just bad.
5.Drowning Pool's(actually Mettalica's) Creeping Death 4/5-Okay.
6.Adema's Freaking Out 1/5-Not that different from all those other bands out there like Sum 41 and Blink 182 just a pinch heavier. Not very good.
7.Black Label's Berserkers 5/5-I don't really like it but he's a good guitarist.
8.Down's Ghosts Along the Mississippi 5/5-Really good, kinda old school metal.
9.Hatebreed's A Call For Blood 0/5-I hate this song.
10.Soil/Zakk Wylde's Halo 4/5-Nothing to brag about here.
11.Flaw's Payback 1/5-Oh, sorry isen't this Adema.
12.3rd Strike's All Lies 3/5-Again another okay song.
13.Pulse Ultra's Big Brother 1/5-Is this Adema or Flaw?
14.Ill Nino's Liar 5/5-My favorite on the CD. It's pretty heavy but it's good.
15.Meshuggah's N.M.C.C. 4/5-This is a really heavy band,an aquired taste.
16.Andrew W.K./Kelly Osbourne's She is Beautiful 4/5-It's not really good, more of a tap your foot song.
This CD is pretty good even though some of the bands aren't very good the good ones make up for it.

Some very nice parts.......2006-02-23
Keith Emerson went on a short tour with the two members of the Nice (Lee Jackson and Brian Davison)plus a three other musicians who were in an ELP tribure band. This is from the show in Glasgow.
The first disc is around 50 minutes long and features the Nice, plus David Kilimister, from the tribue band on guitar. The second CD is 40 minutes long and does not feature the Nice. The first two tracks are keyboard solos from Emerson. The remaining tracks feature the members of the tribute band. The sound quality is very good to excellent. The third disc is a 22 minute interview with the Nice, talking about what is was like to play in concert 30 years ago.
The first disc, featuring the Nice, is very good. Unlike what another reveiwer said, it is not a note perfect copy of the original Nice. They play every song in a new and different way. Some of the new renditions are great.
It starts out with a Rondo/America medly. Both tunes have been overplayed by Emerson, both with the Nice and with ELP. So, hearing them again can be tedious, especially on some of the later ELP live records. But, here they are given a new treatment with other bits of music mixed in. So, for the most part it is fairly interesting. Here, as on a number of the tracks, the addition of Kilimister's guitar adds new depth to the work.
Next is a really fun and very good jazzy rendition of Little Arabella and a rocky version of She Belongs To Me, with a searing guitar solo. This is followed by the worst track on the album, Cry of Eugene. This is the worst version of the song I have ever heard, and it has a very lame guitar solo. Jackson never had a good voice and it is really rough here. The best version of Cry of Eugene done by Lee Jackson's group called Jackson Heights (and it is the best song that group does).
The version of Hang On To A Dream is completely different than any other version and features a long accoustic guitar solo. It is extremely good. However, I still prefer the version on Elegy, which features one of the best keyboard solos of all time. But, I am glad that the group just didn't try to duplicate what it has done before.
Country Pie is fairly good, but suffers from the keyboard playing at the end, which sounds like it was pulled out of Van Halen's Jump.
The final track is a searing version Karella Suite, which has some firely guitar and keyboard solos.
Overall, this is a 4 to 5 star disc, and would be worth buying on its own at a reasonable price.
On the second CD, the first 2 piano solos are fairly interesting, but nothing significantly different than what Emerson has done before.
These are followed by a complete 20 minute version of Tarkus. It is played differently than how ELP has done it in the past. It is very good and very energetic. It is played differently enough that it is worth owning (unlike the live version of Pirates, by ELP, for instance). The only downside is Kilimister's vocals. He sounds like a screaming corporate rock lead singer, like something you would hear from Kansas or Foreigner.
The final tracks are Hoe Down and Fanfare for the Common Man, which are 2 more tracks that have been overplayed by Emerson. The odd thing is that the original studio versions of these 2 tracks still remain the best and most energetic versions. These tunes are played different than the originals, but I don't think anything is added to make these worth owning.
The Nice started out as a quartet, with David O'List on guitar. O'List was more of a leader than Emerson in the beginning. The CD, The Swedish Radio Sessions, captures the Nice before their first record was released. It is a great album. The band was more jazz oriented and O'List was an amazing guitar player. O'List only stayed for two albums. The group continued on without a guitartist and became more classical oriented. The Nice was on the leading edge of "Art Rock".
The Nice's lead singer has been Lee Jackson, who really doesn't have a good enough voice to lead a band. He would be a great secondary singer, doing choruses. At times, he has this very unique whine that adds an interesting texture and atmosphere to some of the songs. Jackson even admits on the interview CD that he isn't a lead singer, and if the Nice reformed, he would like to add a guitarist and lead singer.
I think the Nice's two best albums are Elegy, (with the fantastic Hang on To A Dream) and the Swedish Tapes. This CD is a nice addition, but it is questionable if it is worth the price.
Must have for die-hard Emo fans, otherwise buy used...........2005-06-16
Disc one: For old school nice fans, this is very cool. They cover "the hits" America, Hang on to a Dream, etc. As Keith has said, it's all about economics sometimes. Had they had more money(backing)& time, I cant help but think how much better this could have been.
Disc two: THis is Keith solo & with his band alone. As a ELP fan, I loved Tarkus. Presented here, updated, it's awsome! Again, w/more time & effort, Keith could probably rework a lot of the ELP songbook to sound like this (ie:better!). Hoedown, one of my favorite ELP songs is a train wreck. Emo needs to drop the stuff he cant play anymore. He's a genius but his hands are slowing down. The solo acoustic tunes, brillinat but probably not for the casual listener.
Disc three: I wish it was longer! To here these road kings talking about the Nice, Lemmy fm Motorhead, Keith's knives, etc. I found this totally entertaining. Again, it was like three old friends remembering the good times. I loved it. THe only problem was that it's only 1/2 hour long! I wanted more!
So, hope this helps. Again, I'm sure most EMO fans have it. I've seen it on-line for 30.00(too much). If you can find it cheap &/or used, it's not a bad assoortment of work. Had a major label footed the bill for this, more liner notes, more interviews on disc 3, better rehearsed material in a larger hall(now thats a wish list)-this would really have been an event!
It's "Nice" to see Emerson staying sharp........2004-12-22
Really, this album is only good if you're a huge fan of the Nice or Keith Emerson--he really does do great playing and takes, as always, center stage; but otherwise it won't be up your river and would only serve as a great way to toss out a couple bills.

The sound on this release is, if anything, even cleaner than the previous release, with the Choir and orchestra very evenly balanced. The programming includes a mix of both traditional and brand new songs, a couple of which (Stephen Paulus's "Hymn For America," and Charles Osgood's "The Pledge of Allegiance") were commissioned especially for this recording. Additional note: several of these songs were included on the Choir's 2003 Northeastern States tour, which was a huge success. I highly recommend this recording!

The stage of Tennessee jam band festival Bonnaroo is an unlikely setting for the year's most important blues recording, but young firebrands North Mississippi Allstars pulled off a creative coup this June with their Hill Country Revue. The concert teamed patriarch R.L. Burnside and his guitarist and rapper sons, the late Othar Turner's fife and drum band, the Black Crowes' Chris Robinson, and eccentric producer-pianist Jim Dickinson, the father of Allstars Luther and Cody Dickinson, with the wiry trio. The historic results handily blend all the racial, geographic, and cultural elements of the genre with adventurous musicality. Burnside, sadly, is past his prime--present more for inspiration than his lackluster contributions. But his sons carry on the tradition while pushing its borders into hip-hop and six-string psychedelia. If there's a star here, though, it's guitarist Luther Dickinson, who playfully quotes Duane Allman, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, and the elder Burnside, and then adds a level of tonal and textural exploration to his performance that makes him a one-man defibrillator for the genre--human insurance that the heart of the blues will keep pumping into the future. --Ted DrozdowskiCustomer Reviews:
Capturing the Bonnaroo Spirit.......2003-06-21
Very good chance for someone who couldn't go to get a taste.......2003-04-01
I must say that I am very disappointed in the song choice for Les Claypool's Frog Brigade. I am a huge Claypool fan as well as being a huge Tull fan. However, I would much rather hear Claypool playing his own stuff, and I'm sure he provided a vast set of songs that could have been put on this disc instead of Locamotive Breath.
I am only slightly disappointed in the choice for the Galactic song. I have seen them live, and they seriously jam. The song that was chosen for this double disc doesn't really jam. It's still a good song, but I don't think it represents their true style.
To end, I am very glad that I purchased this double disc. It is very well done, and the compilation of music on here makes me even more upset with myself that I didn't make it to Tennessee myself. I definitely recommend picking this one up.
As a potential solution to the limitations that I have read about this disc is that the song chosen isn't what people wanted for a particular band. If a 4-disc set was released with a few songs from each band, I would buy that.
Good stuff, even if you are not a "Dead" fan..........2003-03-26
The most interesting thing to me is that the free download Amazon lists as being from this CD, Galactic's "Hangnail", is not in fact on the CD, but it is EXCELLENT, and actually better than their contribution to this CD, "Tiger Roll". Fans of this band should download this immediately, it is awesome!
Good job by the producers of this CD to mix up the funk with the roots and southern sounds. (Could have used a Karl Denson song, though. I saw he was on the DVD.) Hopefully the 2003 version will have the funky METERS and Medeski, Martin and Wood! But buy this one to get a hold of a whole scene, and the beauty of music not made for consumer groups.
Worth Every Penny!.......2003-02-18
not what it's all about.......2003-01-06
also, i had the awful feeling after i bought this disc that i'm supporting a profit-based organization rather than one that truly appreciates the music these artists produce. sure, the cd serves as a vector to open people's eyes to a different genre of music, but it's closing the gap between a jam band and a pop band. plus, 22 bucks?

The furious fusion of Garaj Mahal.......2005-10-19
But the whole is more than the sum; Garaj Mahal has a furiousness to their playing that brings to mind an express train. Their sound can dominate the synapses like no other band.
