The only applause not left edited out of this recording of Arcadi Volodos's Carnegie Hall debut recital--given on October 21, 1998--comes after his house-burning encore of Liszt's maniacally florid variations (à la Horowitz) on the famous Mendelssohn "Wedding March." But the volley of enthusiastic cheers and wallops that ensues is enough to register the charismatic spell this young Russian pianist must have cast over his audience. Only in his mid-20s, Volodos seems to channel a bygone era of the Russian variety of Romantic virtuosity in its dual aspect, from hyperathletic prowess to exquisitely poised lyrical refinement. The recital opens with dazzlingly calibrated fireworks for Liszt's 15th Hungarian Rhapsody ("after Vladimir Horowitz," with whom Volodos justifiably invites comparison--as he did on his spectacular debut album--for his sinewy, larger-than-life negotiation of its thunderous octave runs and tangle of skittering flourishes). A far different world is brought to life in the enigmatic, compressed motivic echoes of the Scriabin pieces. The multiply trilled outbursts of ecstatic transport in his Sonata No. 10 beckon and dissipate like voluptuous hallucinations. Volodos can master the kind of interior poetry--breathtaking in its simple eloquence--needed for the two Rachmaninoff Études-tableaux. So too the aching, barely achieved tranquillity Schumann calls for in the most introspective of the "Bunte Blätter." Indeed, the variety of tonal color, warm legato, playful animation, and fully voiced harmonies Volodos brings out suggests the "varicolored leaves" of the collection's title. This is pianistic poetry that lingers long in the mind's ear, as it undoubtedly did for the lucky audience that night in Carnegie Hall. --Thomas May

4 out of 5 stars Perhaps unlimited potentials.......2007-05-26

The question I have is whether his genius extends to bringing out the individual idiom of each composer in sufficient contrast. This will sound like a knock - sorry - but as much as I enjoy his thrilling and virtuosic playing, I oftentimes hear more Volodos than the personality of the composer coming through. Each pianist places his or her individual personality on the music, no doubt about it, but I find that I sometimes have to fight... to work hard... to hear the Rachmaninov in Rachmaninov, the Schumann in Schumann, the Scriabin in Scriabin, because his pianistic performance can sometimes be so overridingly, and I believe, unintentionally dominant. Perhaps each composer's idiom will come through more clearly with repeated listenings or as Volodos matures. In the meantime, I'd love for him to commune with the genius of the composer as much he does with his own. If not, he is likely to fall far short of Horowitz's musicality except for his transcendent technique, and that would be a great loss.

5 out of 5 stars Volodos is the heir and superior of Horowitz.......2005-09-25

Time will tell the whole tale but based on this recording Mr. Volodos must be considered one of the greatest pianists to have ever played the instrument. It is interesting to me that much of the criticism that has been leveled against the man comes from a music establishment whose members and stars are plainly unable to play such pieces with anything close to the same speed, precision, and power. They simply can't do it and so they chide the one who can; the one whose talent exist on a higher plain than their own. And yet the way Mr. Volodos plays such masterpieces somehow rings true to the original intent of the composers. Without question that is true of Liszt whose works for solo piano have seldom, if ever, been played convincingly since Cziffra, similarly scorned by a less-talented establishment, dazzled those whose egos would let them truly hear. Poor Earl Wild and Andre Watts must be quaking in their mediocrity to hear such greatness. The grotesquely oversold Lang Lang must be hiding under a table somewhere, sure that the world has found him out. Don't worry guys; the establishment can't recognize greatness without seeing their own lack of it. There is little chance of that happening. As of today, 9/25/05, I ask of Sony Classical, where is Mr. Volodos? Where is the newsletter promised on his website? Where is his itinerary? He recently played the Far East yet Sony refused to even notify his info-starved fans. Why isn't he promoted? Volodos, you need another label. You need representation, promotion, exposure. Please come to the USA! Every time I listen to my worn old recordings of the great Cziffra my heart cries out: Where is Arcadi Volodos?

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC !! - And Well Recorded........2004-07-06

From a Pianist to a Pianist:

This CD is incredible. Volodos, as "Marc-Andre Hamelin" is one of the greatest living pianists. After Horowitz (the Incarnation of the piano itself) , I'm glad to hear such marvellous interpretations and the variety of the pieces, control of technik, luminous touch, and deepness. Very Passionate.
Congratulations Volodos, try to make your own Encores also, like Horowiz made it.
This CD is a Must Have!

5 out of 5 stars Volodos is at Home in Late Romantic Virtuoso Repertoire..........2003-07-07

Arcadi Volodos has easily become one of my favorites after listening to this phenomenal debut CD. I dare anyone to listen to the first track (the diabolical Horowitz version of Liszt's fifteenth Hungarian Rhapsody) and not listen to the album in its entirety. The Scriabin is exotic and poetically introspective, the Rachmaninov is rich and nostalgic, and the Liszt is a triumph of virtuosity. My only reservation is Volodos' decision to record Bunte Blatter when so many other more successful piano-cycles exist in the Schumann catalogue (imagine an artist of this kind of versatility tackling Carnaval or Kreisleriana). I would also like to suggest Volodos' CD of virtuoso piano transcriptions and his Rach 3. He is a brilliant artist with the rare ability to combine keyboard pyrotechnics, a full-bodied tonal palette, and an inimitable sense of style. This CD is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting repertoire.......2002-11-29

I felt tempted to write this short piece after reading some of the other comments about this disc. Someone of the oversized temperament like this guy is probably always going to fire different reactions in different people.

Undoubtedly the repertoire choices here are audacious but to not be able to get beyond that in order to expand one's knowledge and experience is a great shame. This is particularly the case when the performances are of a quality such as they are here. I can understand that Scriabin is a bit of an unknown quantity to many but I also think that he will only remain unknown to those who do not want to know.

This is a superb recital and the centrepiece is the Schumann - how obscure is that?

4 out of 5 stars beautiful music.......2007-01-30

This is a brilliant album - Inti-Illimani, John WIlliams, Paco Peña? C'mon! This is music that will reward patient listeners. This is deeply soulful, social protest music. Non-Spanish speakers should try to track down the lyrics and find a way of translating them, to appreciate the meaning and the sentiment.
As for the reviewer who copies and pastes the same review for all his reviews of Inti-Illimani's discs... "...the use of this review section as a political venue to praise Allende..." - I don't think one line in a review makes it a political venue, but you have just made it into one with your few paragraphs praising Pinochet.

4 out of 5 stars Let us learn to appreciate their great music without..........2005-12-30

It has been an enormous pleasure to listen to Inti Illimani for the past 20 years. Definitely great musicians and great recordings, to say the least. However the use of this review section as a political venue to praise Allende and call his deplorable and failed communist period in power exciting, and Pinochet's years "the frightening Pinochet years" (read reviews under The Best of Inti Illimani), can only come from the twisted mind of someone who still believes in 20th Century myths: the myth of Fidel Castro, the myth of Che Guevara, the myth of the proletariat, etc. Having survived 11 years in a communist country I know better, a lot better. All of us should by now. Unfortunately we do not. Look at Venezueza and now Bolivia, with the two puppets in power dancing to the music of Fidel Castro.
Frightening years for whom? For the communists and all members of the red tribe of disciples of Fidel Castro, of course. Today, to still call Pinochet a dictator and Fidel Castro "president" is beyond comprehension. Look at Chile today. Can anyone believe it could have become what it is now without eliminating Allende's regime and crushing the communists?
I give Inti Illimani an A for their music. Let us learn to appreciate their great music without praising their disastrous and failed political views. For that, they get capital F.

5 out of 5 stars INTI'S MASTERWORK.......2005-11-13

I used to buy Inti's LPs when I was 12 and I was schooling in Italy.
It still remains one of my favourite musical groups of all time.
Fragments of a Dream is, simply put, their masterwork, the one where Horacio Salinas reaches the greatest heights of inspiration in a blend I would call, at times, "modern Latin American baroque".
It starts with a piece inspired by my fatherland's folk music, Sardegna, and ends with a dismantling-cum-reconstruction of the principle of the dance worthy of any great classical composer. Brilliant

5 out of 5 stars Manns, Salinas, Peña, Williams, Inti una gran combinación........2000-05-08

5 out of 5 stars Quisiera ser paloma para volar.......1999-05-07

5 out of 5 stars Idil amazing.......2006-07-19

No other performer compares to idil. HANDS down. HEr unique and individual style sets her apart from every other performer past and present.

Her recording of Rachmaninov's prelude in C sharp minor can only be topped by rachmaninov himself.

Every time i hear i new song from her, i feel i grow as a pianist.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Rachmaninoff at a good price........2002-07-10

Buy this box set. Biret is great. She plays Rachmaninoff straight up and doesn't taint the compositions with any wild "interpretations." And the recording quality is five star, too. I bought this in order to snag some lesser known Rachmaninoff that I loved (Cinq Morceaux, Moments Musicaux, etc.) and I really got what I paid for. Take a look at the huge tracklist - this is the Rachmaninoff you've been missing out on.

5 out of 5 stars Endless pleasure.......2007-01-24

Fortunately for my pocketbook, I listen to these recordings now mostly from my iTunes library or on my iPod. I say fortunately because I would have long since worn them out. Few of my hundreds of CDs have given me as much pleasure over many years as these. I don't doubt that one can find individual performances of many of these works that may top Shelley's, but for sheer, consistent quality in both interpretation and sound this set is hard to beat. While I have many Rachmaninov recordings by Russian performers, I find myself coming back to Shelley's by preference most of the time. Only in the case of Alexis Weissenberg's characteristically manic DG performance of the two piano sonatas do I find myself regularly drifting from Shelley.

Shelley's recordings of the piano concertos with Bryden Thomson and the Scottish National Orchestra are likewise solid and thoroughly enjoyable as are his three recordings, with various singers (notably Sergei Leiferkus), of the wonderful Rachmaninov Lieder.

3 out of 5 stars The great Dagmar Krause.......2003-01-31

There is really no other voice like Dagmar Krause. Actually, I would hazard to guess there is really no other person like Dagmar Krause. She is utterly unique. Her work with the Art Bears (Fred Frith/Chris Culter)was darn near perfection. She can go from startling sweet to startling alarming in a mili-second. Imagine a German "chanteuse" ala Marlene Dietrich performing in a smoky Berlin club, but instead of the music being Kurt Weill it is British avante garde with "prepared" guitar and "found" percussion. I may be over exaggerating, but you get the drift. Marvelous stuff. "A Scientific Dream and a French Kiss" carries on with Dagmar's appreciation of the sublime and avante garde. Her cohort Marie Goyette lays a bed of sampled classical snippets, making amazing song structures in which Dagmar lends her unique talents. The results are surprisingly diverse and oftentimes humourous, Dagmar relying on a kind of "stream of consciousness" reading of lyrics and poetry. Highlights for me are "Through My Satellite", "Piazza Navone" and "Your Star", a heart-wrencher if ever there was one. Practically worth the CD alone.

5 out of 5 stars Correct me if I'm wrong, Dagmar.......1999-10-11

it's worth about $100 for the amazing music. Dagmar's voice should be prescribed in place of anti-depressants. It's different, very different from anything she's done before, but god it's amazing!

4 out of 5 stars New experimentaal territory for Krause.......1999-05-07

This is a new departure for the gorgeously talented (and gorgeously voiced) Dagmar Krause. Working with Frenchwoman Marie Goyette, who proves a genius at sampling, she has utilised parts of mostly classical pieces (including, for example, Prokofiev's 'Children's Guide to the Orchestra') to create a wonderland. You think you know the music backwards - then there's a change of sample, Goyette moves the boundaries and you are suddenly swept off into a new land. Meanwhile, Krause has written lyrics that play with and often subvert the meaning of the original orchestral works - with lovely touches of humour and even sections of dialogue between her and Goyette. I was unsure of this technique when I first heard it, but now, a month or more after receiving the CD, I love it - more and more each time I hear it. Except while being angrily haranged by Dagmar at a benefit concert for the miners in London, I've found her wonderfully focussed, one of the most aware and confrontational of artists, and often a lot of fun as well. Lots of people miss the fun - but I live by the Emma Goldman line 'if I can't dance I don't want to be part of your revolution'. This is lovely - as well as totally new (Of course, I may have missed some intermediary work, since I haven't had access to her work for several years). Order it now from amazon.com -

        5 out of 5 stars A New Star For 2002? Very Possible.......2002-01-19

This album from Philadelphia-based pop/folk-rock singer Mariel is an interesting combination of space-pop synthesizers and folk-rock acoustic and electric guitars. Mariel's voice is poised somewhere between Jewel and Stevie Nicks, having some of the latter's mysticism and the former's balance of pathos and assertiveness. The title track is a very haunting, quasi-acoustic piece, but the three tracks that stand out for me are "Cruel Scorpio", "Limits", and "What I Want."

Watch out for Mariel; she may become a really big star in 2002.

5 out of 5 stars Frightening Dark Ambient..........2007-03-07

I bought this CD on a recommendation from my buddies on a music message board, asking for what they thought would be truly frightening music. This fits the bill, and then some. If you're new to the genre, know that its not ever going to be "accessible" or "background"; this type of music commands your attention. Accurst creates soundscapes filled with screams, evil laughter, and generally creepy sounds "that go bump in the night" to use a cliche. If you enjoy this album I suggest checking out some work by Lustmord, who pretty much created the genre, and go from there.
