"We started this journey in the summer of 2005. None of us knew we would become a band," says the liner note in I'm from Barcelona's debut album, Let Me Introduce My Friends. For all their newness, Barcelona loves simplicity, singing about stamp collections, oversleeping, and treehouses--with lean guitars and drums bolstered by glockenspiel, ukulele, and well over 20 voices. Irresistibly sunny and numerically massive, Barcelona intricately weaves single-syllable choruses behind Emanuel Lundgren's chesty lead vocal, dizzying the ears. So many voices come to the fore that songs like "Treehouse" are unabashed tapestries of pop delight, exuberant and magnetic and chiming. The Swedish ensemble doesn't play the French horns and harps that mark Polyphonic Spree, but they do indulge every rock opera (as in Hair) inclination that can fit under their purview. Everyday's mid-summer here. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable!.......2007-08-05

My husband and I have been listening to I'm from Barcelona for awhile now. We love them... they have a sound unlike any other. The closest comparision I might make would be either Belle and Sebastian or The Boy Least Likely To - but that wouldn't be quite right. I'm from Barcelona is in a category of its own.

Recently, we saw them perform live. I didn't think I could like their music any more than I already did. I was wrong. Seeing I'm from Barcelona was the most exhilarating experience. This is band that you can expect amazing things from. And a band well worth the support.

4 out of 5 stars I am from Barcelona!.......2007-03-20

Fawlty Towers fans are going to recognize the name of I'm From Barcelona -- that's what the waiter Manuel always says to explain odd stuff: "I am from Barcelona!"

But their debut album "Let Me Introduce My Friends" is nothing like Spanish music. Instead, this lovable, enormous Swedish band sounds sort of like a cross between Architecture in Helsinki and the Polyphonic Spree -- sunny, twinkly, shimmery pop music.

It opens with Emanuel Lundgren drawling, "Daaaaaaamn!/Oversleeping again/Daaaaaaaaamn!/I can't believe I did it once again." He then describes what he'll have to do to "make it on time." It's a mundane topic for a pop song, but it's framed with a sparkling pop tune full of catchy guitar, twinkly xylophone and the occasional bell chime.

The songs that follow are in the same mold -- the lyrics are about confusion, chicken pox, broken hearts, stamp collecting, and finding a spot for the perfect treehouse. And the songs wrapped in them are just as charming: folky pop, driving guitars, twee little sugarpuffs, shimmery bell-augmented pop, and the sprawling orchestral sound of "Olakola."

"Let Me Introduce My Friends" is basically pop for people who like bands with a slightly sugary sound, but a pleasant melody as well. "Let Me Introduce My Friends" is basically all sunshine, spring grass and childlike fun -- very charming.

You can't really single out any band members, since there are almost thirty of them, but the instrumentation is nicely polished and solidly played. The songs are wrapped in unstoppable swirling riffs, banjo, solid percussion, sweeps of wobbly and/or sputtering synth, rattling bells and what sounds like a xylophone.

Lundgren has a nice smooth voice, although at times he sounds a bit like he's singing a nursery rhyme. The lyrics are a bit short and simplistic, but they do admittedly sum up the childlike enthusiasm of the music ("You know I can't believe I'm telling everyone that I know/That every stamp in my collection is a place we could go!").

"Let Me Introduce My Friends" has rather simple songwriting, but deliciously twee pop and some solid, catchy tunes. Nice, unpretentious fun.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Two tracks I really like.......2007-07-21

The Mission Impossible theme is performed well.
The Fireball theme is actually much improved on this version. I prefer the orchestra and the vocals over the original.

2 out of 5 stars Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15

As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2006-05-17

The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06

I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24

Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

Want a party game sure to clear the room in record time? Try playing Name the Beach Boys Worst Album; two-plus decades on, 1978's M.I.U. remains a dogged contender. Vocalist Mike Love, perhaps stunned by the massively weird, if eminently lovable, originality of the Love You album, somehow cajoled the band to sojourn from Southern California to cut their next effort in that somewhat lesser-known recording Mecca--the Maharishi International University in Fairfield, Iowa. Cascading effortlessly from one sentimental, ill-conceived aural greeting card to the next, the forms and harmonies are familiar, if virtually substance-free, in service of a pop sensibility--Love's--that makes Barry Manilow sound like Rimbaud. Bruce Johnston returned to the fold after a long absence just in time for 1979's L.A. (Light Album)--and a shot at another round of everyone's least favorite party game. The band was right about one thing: this is one light album, a virtually fat-free concoction that shamelessly borrows Bach one moment ("Lady Lynda"), then apes Japanese modalities (Al Jardine's clumsy "Sumahama"), and pimps waning disco fever (a cliché-ridden redux/remix of "Wild Honey's "Here Comes the Night") the next. All it desperately needed was a soul, a commodity the devil had apparently collected in a previous deal. Though the infectious "Good Timin'" was both a highlight and moderate hit, Brian Wilson's creative guidance is sorely missed throughout; judging from these two albums, he may indeed have been crazy ... like a fox. Both albums are newly remastered on a single disc. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Gems.......2007-05-19

I've never understood WHY these albums were so unappreciated by the critics and 'some' Beach Boys fans. What do the "Critics" know anyway? They spend more time wasting paper on trying to outsmart their peers by posting what they consider to be their cockiest remarks, which question if they LISTENED to the music at all. Most of what they dismiss in entertainment history, winds up being commercially successful when the public makes a final decision on the product. If you consider yourself a true, sincere "fan"/admirer, etc., you should show support through what you may consider the 'thick and thin' or 'highs and lows' of an artist's career, especially after the abundant musical joy this spectacular band has provided us through the ages. It's also possible that vocally influenced by the Beach Boys megastar artists such as Fleetwood Mac, Linda Ronstadt, Electric Light Orchestra, Eagles, Olivia Newton-John, Foreigner, etc., during the era of these two albums, could have possibly steered those fans' attentions away from this highly influential band for a while. Me, I found time for ALL of them and continued racking up the various albums and 45's [still] found in my library! Maybe[as some opine] the writing was a bit bland, but, regardless of differing opinions, the most importantly overlooked factor within these recordings is that BEACH BOYS vocals and harmonies are still perfectly intact and as entertainingly refreshing as they ever were! Hardly any mention of that at all, and the BOYS are, first and foremost, a VOCAL GROUP. VOCALLY - they don't miss a beat at all! There are a few Top 40 Radio hits here among the highly noted fan favorites, and some maintain classic Beach Boys status in their 40 plus years catalogue: GOOD TIMIN' - COME GO WITH ME - [the celebrated, disco tinged club fave->]HERE COMES THE NIGHT[ <-yes, it was out there!] - Lady Lynda - etc. The BEACH BOYS offer up equal, well balanced doses of their trademark vocals and style on sunny fun, upbeat doo-wop styled rockers[PITTER PATTER; SHE'S GOT RHYTHM; etc.]- big, beautiful seaside/introspective ballads[FULL SAIL; WINDS OF CHANGE; GOIN' SOUTH; etc.]- plus midtempo surfside sand, sea and city tinged rocking tunes[CONA COAST; WONTCHA COME OUT TONIGHT; BELLES OF PARIS; SWEET SUNDAY; etc.]which will please their entire diverse fan base. Fact is, and I recall it all quite well, when these albums were issued, Album Oriented Rock[AOR]FM Radio and Top 40 Radio both jumped on various tracks as well as the issued singles for airplay exposure and the BEACH BOYS maintained their status throughout. These albums did not disappear without a trace...they remain as vital to the group's catalogue as the rest of their output. Rediscover these great albums, and really LISTEN.

3 out of 5 stars Not mainstream music .......2007-04-24

I have both albums, and I prefer the MIU album of the two. MIU is not a mainstream/commercial album. To truly appreciate this album, you must listen with purpose. If you are simply "passively" listening to this album, you'll miss out on how good it is. Best song is "Winds Of Change".

4 out of 5 stars M.I.U.......2007-02-11

I may be in the minority, but I want to defend M.I.U.
I like every single song on M.I.U and actually I listen to it often. Some of these later Beach Boys albums are really good, but you have to approach them with the right attitude; these weren't made to have the same serious vibe of Holland and Surf's Up. Even with the conflicts going on within the group at the time, M.I.U. sounds like the Beach Boys enjoying themselves, and I like every song on this album.

The Light Album....not so much.

3 out of 5 stars It has it's moments, but the boys finally run out of steam here .......2007-01-30

Enjoyable and still the Original BBs. Yet the good songs are rarer and the production is dated. It's still better than was was to come in the next few years...

4 out of 5 stars Lady Lynda is a masterpiece of music !!!.......2006-08-16

I can understand who's mention the fact there not the best effort they done during their magical carriere, but i just want to defend the magnificent piece of music : Lady Lynda, for me the best Al Jardine song for ever, the production is brilliant, and the fact that he was inspired by BacH music put a very good feeling in the song. The chorusin this one is simply beautifull...The version on the live in Knebworth is truly amazing.
The single will peak number 7 in the UK
Al Jardin write it for his wife but he will rerecorded as Lady Liberty after divorced...
Thanks Al for the really nice love song!

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.

If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."

Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings.......2005-10-05

This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.

5 out of 5 stars Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18

The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars He's done it again.......2002-07-15

Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.

This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.

Way to go Michael, you've done it again!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10

There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.

This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.

This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!
Bravo Rhino!

I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

5 out of 5 stars SILLS GOES FOR BROKE -------- AND SHE TRIUMPHS.......2006-04-17

I, being a great admirer of Callas, Caballe', Sutherland, and Sills, cannot understand why people so vehemently bash one of them in favor of the other. This does nothing to further the interest of music, and it reduces great operatic singing to the level of ice hockey. "Anna Bolena" is an opera that requires a very special type of soprano. It is, essentially, a florid bel canto opera for a considerably heavier voice than that associated with such bel canto heroines such as those encountered in "Puritani", "Sonnambula", and "Lucia". A great "Anna Bolena" should also be able to command Norma and Rossini's "Semiramide". Beverly Sills had a basically small voice, and she herself has admitted repeatedly that her undertaking Donizetti's Three Queens (Anna Bolena, Maria Stuarda, and Elizabeth in "Roberto Devereux) probably shortened her career by a decade. She was, of course, right. She certainly makes Anna Bolena a convincing vocal creation, and she sings with great conviction and involvement. But even so, there are moments when you know that she's pushing her resources to the virtual end of their endurance. She manufactures low chest tones that are completely out of allignment with the rest of her voice, and some of her top notes are nothing more than pitched screams. Of course, her passion and sincerity compensates for a lot of these deficiencies, and she emerges with a great success. I respect Sills, and have always felt that she was a little undone by her publicity machine, as well as the constant shadows of Callas, Sutherland, and Caballe. Truth to tell, all three had voices far more suited to these heavier bel canto roles. I'm not going to enter any fray and state any opinions here. Beverly Sills put forth a tremendous amount of skill and effort into roles like Anna Bolena, and she paid a vocal price, as one can hear on this recording. Still, I wouldn't be without this performance. Shirley Verrett is an outstanding Jane Seymour (she certainly could have sung Anna Bolena!), though I'm not sure that she and Sills blend all that well together. Whatever the case, let's give all these great sopranos a break and stop bashing them. My message to the bashers is: Callas, Sills, Caballe' & Sutherland have BEEN there and made it. What have YOU accomplished?

1 out of 5 stars Enough!.......2006-01-25

Will this awfully mellow coloratura chirper ever stop shrieking? Sills couldn't fit the role of Anna less! Maria Callas, La Divina, has always been, and will always remain the role's owner.
Incidentally, how can some people blatantly dare show their absolute ignorance? How can somebody call -and get away with it- Callas' soloists Nicola Rossi-Lemeni, Giulietta Simionato, and Gianni Raimondi "second rate"??? I guess you've neither listened to any of them nor heard of their superb and much acclaimed qualities as musicians!!!

5 out of 5 stars The best set available - wonderful.......2005-03-27

This is one of my favourite operas. I have heard the Callas, Sunderland (CD and DVD performances) and Gruberova (not to mention some live recordings).

Callas was breathtaking in her live performance from the 50's (especially in Act 3) BUT the sound quality is very poor indeed and the other soloists are second rate. The performance was also heavily cut. I only wish she had recorded the whole opera in the studio, instead of one or two arias.

Sunderland was well past her prime by the time she recorded her performance on CD. Her diction, never a strong point for her, is particularly 'woolly' and she has problems sustaining the higher register without strain. It is a pity she didn't record it much earlier in her career. Boynage conducts in a pedestrian manner too (compare the overture from Boynage and Rudel, Rudel makes the overture exciting and vibrant. Boynage conducts a somewhat flat and one dimensional rendition).

Gruberova's recording on CD is from a live performance and is truly aweful in places. I actually think it is one of the worst performances of anything I have ever heard 'recorded'. Don't touch it with a barge pole.

Then there is Sills performance. OK, I wish the voice was a little heavier at times but her singing is, as usual, beautiful. You feel that Anna Bolena is a role she loved, she conveys dramatic sincerity throughout. Rudel conducts his orchestral forces with such energy. Indeed, he is a major selling point of this set for me. He injects the performance with flair and gusto. Verrett, Burrows and Plishka don't put a foot wrong. A wonderful performance. I love this recording above all the others. Buy it. This set leaves the competition standing, (although, if you can tolerate the appalling sound, Callas' performance is fantastic too, however overall this set is far superior).

4 out of 5 stars A great Anna.......2004-05-20

I'm sorry if I hurt anyone. I was just so mad and angry because Callas got bashed so many times by a Sills-Fanatic. I deeply apologise. Sills has a very beautiful voice, one of the best lyric coloratura voices out there. I hope Bev's fans will forgive me. This is one of the best Annas ever.

1 out of 5 stars I've had it!.......2004-05-20

A Sills-Fanatic keeps bashing Callas with one star reviews in a row! I warned him that our patience is at its end! Now we'll retaliate! Sills is AWFUL as Anna Bolena, thin, sour, glassy and fake with no middle. A stupid coloratura chirper. Stop singing, Sills! My ears hurt, stop shrieking!

5 out of 5 stars Canuck Brass' Salute to the States.......2004-03-03

CBrass has for some years now been one of the premiere brass units in the world. Having seen them twice in person, they are true showmen and ambassadors for their country, their music and instruments.

Here is a CD that is needed in our time: a collection of patriotic, good ole' American music.

This is 4th of July clap your hands firework watching music at its best. In fact, that is exactly what listening to this collection does for me: it takes me to the excellent Greenfield Village at Henry Ford's annual 4th Fireworks Concert.

This is good stuff, well done by early CBrass.

5 out of 5 stars Fun.......2002-01-29

The Canadian Brass never fail to please, and this CD really lives up to that reputation. Even with the added orchestra, the songs never get bogged down or unevenly weighted. This was one of the first CB CD's I bought several years ago, and still one of my favourites of theirs.

4 out of 5 stars Fun.......2000-10-24

This cd is a lot of fun to listen to, mainly because of the entirely too impressive trumpet playing. While the quintet may be a bit trumpet heavy, it does not detract from music in this corny, showy style. It is a lot of fun to listen to, and I highly recommend it to those who love brass music.

5 out of 5 stars Trust me; it is really a very good CD.......2005-06-16

In 1969, I have bought the Longplaying "March in review - Stirring U.S. service marches - Band of the Grenadier Guards". It is the original recording on London SP44131 and it was considered at that time as one of the best military music recordings ever done. This CD contains exactly the same tunes payed exactly in the same manner and it is always a powerful recording. Listen Anchors Aweigh and you will hear the sound of the waves. No other band can do that. Listen "Ballad of the green berets", "Semper Paratus", "She wore a yellow ribbon" or "Thru the years" and you will understand why I like it. Trust me; it is really a very good CD.

2 out of 5 stars Great marches........ Poor rendidtion.......2004-09-08

These are stirring marches but these renditions are like the score from a BAD B war movie.

1 out of 5 stars Stirring Marchesof the US Services.......2004-01-29

While I applaud the efforts of the Grenadier Guards to honor our services, I am afraid that their effort has failed miserably. This CD is awful!

1 out of 5 stars Stirring Marches of the USA Services.......2003-06-26

I agree with who ever wrote the following review 100%. This this CD is awful.

"So much orchestral embellishment that one can't even pick out the tune you want to hear. What a mess they've made of simple powerful music."

5 out of 5 stars Uplifting and Great!.......2001-12-02

I just recieved this cd in the mail and cannot stop listening to it. It is uplifting and makes you want to stand up and start marching. Truly patriotic and American, buy this one! Don't listen to the person who said that they made a mess of this cd. This is one of the great ones!

String quartet versions exelled such beautiful performance! After reviewing Tupac Shakur's original albums, I decided to check out the string quartet. To be honest, Tupac's work shows such strong, beautiful meanings of his life while the string version plays the beauty of many instruments dedicating to Tupac's work and his music. For those who love rap and a side of classical listening, this is one collection you can't pass up to!

I just trashed this cd 4 days ago after tryin to like it. Truthfully i never liked dogg pound from day one. So I don't know why I bought this 3 years ago. First off, too many skits. 31 tracks and like 12 skits or somethin like that. A few nothin short of extremely wack disses. And subject matter as limited as always. We all know you a gangsta. You been tellin us since 94. Can you talk about somethin else now?

3 out of 5 stars GOOD, NOT GREAT.......2005-03-21

Daz is my all-time favorite producer and one of my favorite rappers. This is relatively different material considering "Retaliation, Revenge and Get Back" and "R.A.W." are more hardcore. This album is more layed back gangsta rap. A lot of the CD takes shots at Death Row and Kurupt and has guest appearances by Soopafly, Snoop Dogg, and P.F.N. If you get what Daz is about, then you can't really hate on this, you have to listen to it for what it's worth and take it as a branching out type project that wasn't meant to labeled great. The tracks that are good are quality since it is Daz. The only flaw is all the skits that appear after almost every track, that can get annoying. But, if a D.P.G. fan, you gotta get it and add it to the collection, it's not great but it is some alright Daz Dillinger. Don't hate on the misunderstood.

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars.......2004-12-09

Daz' new album has 31 tracks, the problem being 13 of these are short pointless skits and interludes that make the CDsomewhat annoying to listen to (song, skit, song, skit, Etc.). Of the 18 songs, there's 1 classic, about 6 I skip, and the rest are pretty good to good. After track # 20 there's really only 2 or 3 songs worth listening to, and they're average nothing special. The album features Snoop (2 songs), Soopafly (4 songs -- and a lot of the production), P.F.N. (5 songs) and 1 song each with E White, Goldie Loc & Bad Azz. It also has another message to Kurupt. It comes with a bonus DVD but it's nothing special. A good album to have for his fans.

Enclosure 2, all four cds, is curated as a sprawling notebook filled with sounds and speech instead of sketches and words. Of any Partch recording extant, it gives the best picture of the man--as the curmudgeonly, extremely innovative misanthrope that he was, as the composer who was impossibly unlike anyone else before or since. The essence of Partch's music reflects the history of the world--from his particular perspective--the imaginings of ancient Greece to the influence of Chinese musical melodrama, all propelled by homemade instruments based on a 43-tone scale named things like the "Kithara" and the "Boo." These recordings also give the best sense of his philosophy of language in music. Lamenting the whole time how text in music had become detached from the language of everyday life, Partch ran music alongside newsboys' cries and hobos' diaries, following the forms, cadence, and dynamics of speech, rather than the other way around. From his juvenilia (a wonderful song he wrote at 18) to a 45-minute segment of his wake in 1974, the first steps towards exploring Partch's sparkling works fully are made here. --Robin Edgerton
