Top of the line.......2003-06-17
This CD, along with Watching the White Wheat, is consistently a top seller on the group's US tours. Solid musicianship, great passion and emotion brought into the singing. There is some instrumental work done on this disc, but it doesn't overpower the singers.
To correct Mr. Beamer's statement in his review, the KS have indeed been doing pop and all genres of music since their founding in 1968. In fact, it was the inappropriateness of singing pop and light music with the Choir of King's College, Cambridge, that led a small group to branch off and sing all genres of music, including pop, on their own time ... this leading to the founding of the King's Singers.
The King's Singers in their element.......2001-09-28
The King's Singers got started a few decades ago doing exclusively classical material, and most of that was pre-1700. Now, many years on, (and after several changes in the group's membership) they have long since branched out into pop and other genres.
This CD (along with another similar one, "Watching the White Wheat") really show off their UK roots, with English, Scottish, and Irish folksongs. The arrangements are mostly quite good, and all the performances are excellent. Deserving of special mention are: (on the slow, poignant side) "Annie Laurie", and "The Ash Grove". [Note: the arrangement of "Annie Laurie" heard here is different from, and I think inferior to, the arrangement they did on an old out-of-print LP called "Atlantic Bridge", where they did both Britsh and American folksongs -- that LP is Highly Recommended (if you can find it -- good luck!)]
Anyway, back to the review: on the up-tempo side, two very fun tunes are "Going to Towyn" and "Mairi's Wedding". For you singers out there, the score for the latter is available in a 3-part arrangement, and is rather easy to learn.
Pure Artistry.......2000-12-09
I bought this CD after seeing the King's Singers in concert. Everytime I listen to it, it takes me back to a magical evening, and a magical place- the British Isles. These songs are beautifully arranged and sung. I never get tired of listening to these timeless folk songs that have been weaved into the cultural fabric of America and others around the world.
Absolutely beautiful!.......2000-08-25
The cracked, maimed, and scuffed CD case that I am looking at right now is in itself testement to the addictive qualities of this recording. I have had this CD for almost a year and it has wandered the country with me (we just got back from No. Cal. ;) I listen to it almost every night before I go to sleep. The beautifully blended harmonies on this CD are gorgeous and I have fallen completly in love with the countertenor voices. All of the tacks are wonderful but my favorites are (#2)The Skye Boat Song (listen to this while reading Diana Gabaldon!) (#4) Annie Laurie (#6) Danny Boy and (#17) Eriskay Love Lilt. *Whew* that was hard, I can't pick my favorites easily. Buy this CD for it's gorgeous cover and fall in love with the music!
Wonderful.......2000-05-18
I love this CD, the arrangements for these folk songs are superb. The songs picked are fun and beatiful representatives of English Folk songs. One of my favorite CD's.

In perspective these are some of the most popular songs of their time. I enjoy the historical value of songs from the past. Hearing someone sing about things you may have only learned from a history book, makes it more real.

Amazon.com essential recording
Brittany, in western France, is an ancient Celtic homeland whose language and music are closely related to those of Wales and Cornwall. And although Breton folklorist Polig Monjarret only jokingly suggested that the Chieftains do a Breton album, they did just that. Celtic Wedding remains one of their finest outings. Breton music is subtle when compared to Irish, Scottish, and Welsh music, with complex rhythms, rich harmonies, and spin-on-a-dime call-and-response refrains. The venerable Irish sextet seems refreshed and exhilarated by the cross-pollination. Local musicians sit in, playing the bombarde (a notoriously bad-tempered oboe) and biniou (Breton bagpipes), and singing in the Breton language, which is making a strong comeback after long years of repression. --Christina Roden
Customer Reviews:
Still a fan, but not my favorite Chieftains CD.......2006-07-10
I love the Chieftains, I think I own almost every one of their CD's. And even though this one is okay, I found myself skipping ahead to see if the next song was better or interesting. Again, I love the Chieftains, just not a fan of this CD.
Great CD.......2006-01-04
I love this CD. My only wish were that the final song -- which is actually a collection of several songs -- was divided up into the individual songs. Not that it really is a big deal, it would just make listening to it easier.
May be a little too studious and cultured for many listeners.......2001-12-05
I like the Chieftains a lot, love some of their music. I love Irish music, especially the moody traditional OR electronic/ethnic updates or variations on the Celtic sound and this album falls in the former category. I find it a little long in the tooth, actually, and have to get into an academic frame of mind to fully appreciate it. I've tried to listen to it several times, but find my mind soon wanders and, unlike so much of the Chieftains music, the tunes don't stay in my head. Definitely a mood piece and best appreciated, I suspect by serious Celtic or Chieftains fans.
A Fresh Breeze from the Chieftains.......2000-07-28
It is difficult not to like a performance by the Chieftains, and this collection is no exception. While the subject matter is a little removed from their usual Irish fare, the high quality which one has come to expect from them is certainly present.
A Fresh Breeze from the Chieftains.......2000-07-22
It is difficult not to like a performance by the Chieftains, and this collection is no exception. While the subject matter is a little removed from their usual Irish fare, the high quality which one has come to expect from them is certainly present. You can almost smell the hills and feel the gentle breezes.

Hymns in the Anglican Tradition Beautifully Performed.......2007-01-24
This is one more example of hymns in the Anglican Tradition, sung by the always excellent choir of King's College, Cambridge. It is a splendid example of the sonorous sound of men and boys, accompanied by a classic English organ and, for the quieter hymns, the gentle sound of harp. All the familiar hymns and hymn tunes are here. You will not regret adding this CD to your collection.
Very inspiring music.......2005-07-06
I always enjoy listening to this Cd and particularly because of the orchestra and mellifluous choir. I especially enjoy: A Mighty Fortress, Come Down, O Love Divine, Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, and Thine Be The Glory. Some of the selections are soft such as "The Lord's My Shepherd" and "Drop, Drop, Slow Tears." Still, it is a fabulous selection and one of my favorites.
Great English Hymns.......2005-02-10
This was one of my Christmas gifts and I really looked forward to listening to it. I had just visited King's College, Cambridge back in August and really liked it--you should try to make it out there if possible.
Anyway, this CD was great to listen to. Some hymns are scored for orchestral accompaniment, choir and organ, while the majority of tracks are just for choir and organ.
Recorded in the King's College Chapel (the front cover has a great shot of the ceiling's trademark "fan" stone carving), the hymns are pure English sound--boys' treble voices along with men's changed voices singing with a pure, clean, straight tone. It's very sweet-sounding.
The hymns chosen are also great; "Be Thou My Vision," an Irish classic, appears along with "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross," "All People That on Earth Do Dwell," and "Morning Has Broken" (later recorded by Cat Stevens).
The singing isn't especially elaborate--they're just simple hymns. They're orchestrated very well, however, and they sound great.
Religious people may prefer these recordings more in general--these are Christian hymns after all--but I think it's a great recording and is worth listening too, especially if you enjoy that English sound!
Buy this CD!.......2004-09-20
Having heard Kings College Choir twice, in the flesh, at Kings, this CD is a wonderful example of what you might hear. If you can't make it to Cambridge, buy this CD. It contains many of the old favorites and also some hymns that are not found on other English hymn CD's.
English Choirs.......2002-12-18
Having visited many Cathedrals throughout the UK and listened to the enchanting voices of the boys choirs, I was disappointed with this particular rendering from Kings. Perhaps I am biased in that I enjoy the organ background or no background but the use of a full blown orchestra, in my opinion, tended to overwhelm and was totally unnecessary and somewhat grandoise choice on the part of Stephen Cleobury. Apart from that, much of the music was excellent. In comparison with other CD's from Kings, this was disappointing.

Great music - fun to singalong.......2007-03-10
We have the Christmas Revels CD and loved that, but I can't stand Christmas music in February, so I bought this CD. My family adores it -- my kids, 4 and 6, love to sing along to it. There are a few drinking songs that praise alcoholic beverages (Good Ale, Jone's Ale), but I'm not sure my kids get the gist and it doesn't bother me.
I felt this was well worth the cost -- there are a lot of songs on here. I love that we can sing along to music that isn't sacchrine, dumb-downed, kids music and I like the historical nature of the tunes (the liner notes are great -- they give background on the May festival and each song has a few sentences of background, as well as providing the lyrics. There are a few songs that are instrumental, but most have singing).
Another album my family is enjoying is Dean Shostack Davy Crockett's Fiddle - they are instrumental early American fiddle tunes.
Very fresh and fun........2001-09-06
I defy you to not sing along with this album. The songs are catcy without being tiring, folksy without being simple, nostalgic without being sentimental. The Revel Singers make you feel like you're in the midst of a big party full of boisterous people having a great time. I was introduced to this album via my local eclectic radio station that played "Jones's Ale" one morning and I was hooked.
Refreshing Change from Tired Carols.......1999-12-29
Probably taken from one of the delightful annual Revels Christmas/holiday musicals, the sound is Christmas-y without being cloying. It's joyful, fresh and charming.

Anonymous players indicates substandard performances........2007-04-07
Why can't the label provide the names of the performers? Is it because they're total unknowns? Is it because this is a compilation of poorly recorded tracks from the 60s? One has to wonder. As much as I'd like to buy this, I fear it'll be some Madacy-style disappointment.

Older songs........2006-12-23
The songs on this cd are very old and have that old hollywood sweet type of feel to them. Good for an older couple or a very old fashioned couple.
Not what I wanted-Not even close........2005-07-08
If there is such a thing as Irish country music, then this is the worst form of it. I was expecting instrumentals or something appropriate to play at a wedding. There is not one good song on this CD and there is definitely nothing here that can be played at a wedding. The title is definitely misleading.
The Vow by Druidstone is a much better choice.......2002-01-02
While I was doing research for my book - The Traditional Irish Wedding - I wanted to be able to recommend as much authentic Irish music as possible for both the ceremony and the reception.
The book came about because our daughter wanted a celebration reflective of her roots; we ended up with all Irish music for the ceremony, including a Celtic Mass. The same was true of the reception. There is so much great Irish music available that the problem for most couples will be deciding what to include and what to leave out. Except for The Irish Wedding Song and My Wild Irish Rose, it's my opinion that this particular CD is misleading as to its name and content.
Irish Wedding Songs.......2001-06-23
Yuck! My fiance is from Ireland and this is exactly the type of "Irish" music we want to avoid at our wedding. We don't want the family on this side of the Atlantic to get the wrong impression. Look elsewhere, this is no bargin.
The Title is Misleading.......2000-11-15
I purchased the CD for 1 song, The Irish Wedding Song. It is beautiful. Outside of this track, there are maybe 2 other songs worth listening to, When You Were Sweet Sixteen and I Love You Because. This should not be billed as an Irish CD. Very little Irish about it. It is more country than Irish and has very little to do with a wedding.

The union between the well-respected Irish singer Nóirín Ní Riain and the monks of Glenstal is a perfect one. Ní Riain's lovely soprano tenderly chimes over the monks' deeper vocal blanket as they sing medieval Celtic religious songs in the sean nos or "old style" tradition--subtly varying enunciation and tempo. Singing in Gaelic and Latin Gregorian plainchant, Ní Riain delicately wavers and flies throughout Limerick's Glenstal Abbey, creating an angelic and purely holy atmosphere. On closer listen, it's actually the Glenstal monks who occasionally have trouble keeping up with Ní Riain's vocal mastery--though their lower, male voices provide a refreshing, grounding counterpart to her delicate, high tone. The last track, "The Blessed Virgin's Keening," offers a particular highlight of the extraordinary call-and-response littered throughout this album. One of the Glenstal monks takes the solo male vocal and the result is a lovely, repetitive, masslike conclusion to the CD. Ní Riain has also authored books on Celtic culture and Gregorian chant. --Karen Karleski

Gaelic Treasure!.......2004-09-15
A wonderful work: a unique blend of traditional spiritual Gaelic songs against a backdrop of Gregorian chant(also in Gaelic!)....a truly unique work. It is a feast for the ears as well as the mind. Close your eyes and you will see the beauty and mystery of the Emerald isle.Pity that its only 41 minutes.........
Least liked of three.......2001-10-27
I bought this cd after listening and loving Noirin's other music. Enya eat your heart out.... Noirin's voice and her ability to portray her emotions thru the Gaelic is sheer heaven.
A Cool Waterfall Melting the Knots of the Mind.......2001-05-20
This exqusite CD is a threshold into a finer level of existance. As a yoga teacher I have found it to be a lovely adjunct to practice as the melodies pour through the brain and liquify any tensions as they soak and gracefully melt through the spine, through the whole nervous system. With even a shred of attention on this profound music your whole awareness will settle into that sacred space of your own being, Being Itself. This CD is a masterpiece.
Exquisite Gaelic plainsong.......2000-06-08
The 11 1/2 minute final track - "The Blessed Virgin's Keening" - is sufficient justification for this album. The monks of Glenstal are superb in this antiphonal (call & response) plainsong sung in Gaelic. It is repetitive but never boring as there are constantly subtle changes keeping the listener's interest. "Mary's Keening" which begins the album is a perfect counterpoint to the final piece. "The Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary" is probably the most recognized piece on the album - and again an excellent rendition. There are no poor tracks - give this a listen and I'm sure you'll want an encore.
Wonderful.......1999-07-31
The music is beautiful and lulling, and her voice is pure and feminine in a hauntingly lovely way. I found this music to be spiritually inspirational and utterly peaceful. I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys Celtic music, Gregogorian chants, spiritual music, or a pure soprano voice.
