In Pahinui's hands, slack key guitar is eloquent, original, and virtuosic. Night Moon, his third release on Dancing Cat Records, is his most polished yet. He offers effortless chops, peppering each piece--vocal and instrumental alike--with a broad vocabulary of intricate motives and well-handled dynamics. Singing in a lazy melancholy tenor-baritone, with an impressive falsetto, his voice is the perfect juxtaposition for his active, expressive playing. Pahinui has recorded prolifically since the late '60s when he appeared on several albums with his father, the late Gabby Pahinui (Hawaii's best known and most influential slack key guitarist). Pahinui is ecstatically at play on "Hurrah Lani Ha'a Ha'a," which sounds distinctly country, and features some of his most deftly crafted fretwork. Listen to the subtle harmonies of "Hawaiian Cowboy," and the halted urgency of "Po Mahina," and you'll put this guy up against any fingerstylist around. Night Moon is a great buy for guitar enthusiasts. --Daniel Ferris

5 out of 5 stars A chip off da ole block.......2000-04-16

Anyone who has discovered, and is collecting, Hawaiian slack key discs will certainly want to add this one to the shelf. I was introduced to this musical style by way of a cassette by Cyril's father Gabby--purchased at a gas station for playing in my rental car while on a trip to the big island. Perhaps more than any of the other Dancing Cat CDs in this series, this one evokes memories of Gabby, although with a much more polished style. Son Cyril even pays homage to his father by performing Hi'ilawe, probably Gabby's best known hit. The combination of vocals and instrumentals strikes a nice balance, there are no clunker tracks (meaning, for me, that all have Hawaiian lyrics and sound), and there is a good blend of old and new. Some of the tracks are rather dreamlike; this is mellow music, much more so than some of the Dancing Cat series. My other favorite contemporary slack key vocal/instrumental combo discs are "Ohana (Family)" by Dennis and David Kamakahi (which unfortunately includes a clunker track, "Around the World in 80 Days") and "Drenched by Music" by George Kahumoku. For an all-instrumental disc, try "The Gift" by Moses Kahumoku. For a real treat, delve into the earlier recordings by Gabby Pahinui and the Sons of Hawaii. They tend to be more upbeat, and the sound of a small band and multiple vocalists is a nice contrast to the slack key guitar soloists.

As the 9th of Gabby Pahinui's 10 children, Cyril hails from the first family of slack key. He's known for his percussive sound, which he creates by dampening the strings with his right hand, but the jaunty, delicate melodies and improvisations he places between the beats are just as impressive. He can stretch out effortlessly from the traditional to the progressive, sometimes even in the same song, and he's also one of the genre's most emotive vocalists, particularly in the Hawaiian falsetto style. This solo album offers a strong mix of traditional and improvised-in-the-studio songs. --John Morthland

5 out of 5 stars cyril pahinui is incredible!!.......2001-08-11

cyril pahinui, the son of the late slack key guitar legend gabby pahinui, is one of the finest slack key guitarists in the world! on the album, issued by george winston's "dancing cat records," pahinui demonstrates some of the most unbelievable guitar playing i've ever heard!

i had the great fortune of seeing him in concert and spoke briefly with him afterwards. a gentle warrior, pahinui truly exhudes the spirit of aloha in his skillful playing and soothing voice --not a dry eye in the house!

if you're looking for gentle music to take you away to a tropical isle, consider pahinui's albums. this is a wonderful introduction to the fine art of hawaiian slack key guitar. this is a cd that is in constant rotation on my player--and one that i listen to almost every night upon returning from work in order to relax and let go of the tensions of the day...

As a student of Ki Ho'alu (Hawaiian slack key), I own many CDs of the genre. Ka Ho'oilina Mau is my favorite. Uncle Cyril's voice is so smooth, so soulful. He plays predominately in C major tuning and thus can go anywhere in his playing and often does (See also, Four Hands Sweet and Hot). Cyril is a monster player.

Kiho'alu (slack key) guitar is a durable and easy-to-listen-to music, with a lilting phrasing that is curiously offset by an edge created by the unusual tunings. Cyril Pahinui comes from the acknowledged dynasty of Hawaiian slack-key guitarists. His playing is flawless, his style modern yet still folksy. Bob Brozman is one of America's leading slide and resonator guitar proponents, and one who has had a love of Hawaiian music for a long, long time. Brozman has also been a major student of Hawaiian slack-key guitar, working with many of the great island musicians over the last decade, bringing the music to new audiences around the world. Together Pahinui and Brozman have lovingly re-created some classics, emphasizing the melodies of songs that would have normally been heard in ensembles where the guitar might be more lost in the overall sound. Here the melodies and harmonies of the tunes jump right out, whether it's a sweet love song like "Hula O Makee" or a jumping novelty tune like "Hawaiian Cowboy." Two master guitarists take us on a tour of the islands, big and small, with great musicianship and friendly charm. --Louis Gibson

5 out of 5 stars If you're into this genre, you'll like this recording.......2006-05-23

I heard Brozman comment on hhis musical interests and explorations on an NPR program. It sounded very cool. I explored his catalog and decided this was a 'must have.' I was right. Play this for friends who don't know about slack key. They will be in awe, intoxicated, and in debt to you for showing them what (two) acoustic guitar can sound like.

5 out of 5 stars You've Struck Gold, Hawaiian Gold!.......2006-02-04

If this is your first time ever listening to Cyril Pahihui, you have a LOT of catching-up to do. You've definitely struck Hawaiian Gold, Slack Key Gold with this album along with the wonderful guitar of Bob Brozman, and almost any other album by Cyril.

Recently, I was lucky enough to catch his show at the PALMS in Winters, CA. There was a full-house in the intimate playhouse, and they blew us all away! Cyril and his guitar were superb. He was accompanied by a host of Hawaii's great slack key guitar masters such as, Patrick Landeza and the most prolific Hawaiian song writer/performer today, Dennis Kamakahi.

"Four Hands" is NOT just "easy listening", it strikes every string of your heart and fills your soul and mind with the most beautiful feelings. Gushing, yes I am, and goose pimples too (chicken skin as they say on the islands) because this is where slack key guitar is at it's best.

I also recommend "Black Sands" with Ledward Kaapana, and "The Gift of Music-From Father to Son" album by Dennis Kamakahi & his son David. If you want to get a really good slack key guitar education, also check-out Chet Atkins' more recent albums and some of the not-so-recent ones like, "Neck & Neck" with Mark Knopfler. Cyril Pahinui credits "Uncle Chet (Atkins)" with teaching him a few things, and vise-versa. For a nostagic look back, check-out Cyril's late-father Gabby Pahinui, from whom he learned his craft.

4 out of 5 stars Much more than I expected.......2001-05-05

As a person who listens to the traditional musics of many different cultures, I must preface my review by saying that this is my first cd of Hawaiian slack-key guitar music. It won't be my last. The reason I gave it 4 stars is because I think it's a great cd, but then again I don't have any other Hawaiian cd's to compare it to so I need to leave the door open in case I find myself reviewing even better ones in the future.

I've been on the verge of trying Hawaiian guitar music for several years but I just could never get myself to lose the image of that god-awful tourist music that we see on tv every time someone steps off of a plane onto Hawaiian soil. I am glad I decided to just bite the bullet, buy this cd, and hope that it's different than that music. It is! The Hawaiian tracks on TONE POEMS III really helped in pushing me to explore the style further.

What continues to strike me most about this cd is the variety of moods. Hawaiian music is much more stylistically, rhythmically, and emotionally diverse than I had thought it would be. Some of this cd is very upbeat and really makes you wish there were a beach around, but then other tracks are heart-wrenchingly moving. There is almost a "joyful sadness" to some of this music. And then some of it just flat-out smokes!

I also need to comment on the great sonic quality of the recording. There is a real tonal richness to slide playing on National and Bear Creek Kona guitars. If the recording quality is mediocre the guitars really sound flat and sorta cheezy. On this cd all that richness is revealed and you can really hear the notes reverberating out of these amazing instruments. Just going by this one cd, I think Dancing Cat Records has done a real service to the pure and rich tones of acoustic, stringed instruments.

5 out of 5 stars National Resophonic madness.......2000-02-01

Who does not love Bob Brozman ? You can grab any of Bob's CDs (and there are many!) and you will be pleased and 100% satisfied. It doesn't matter if he works on his own or if he collaborates with greats like Cyril Pahinui, Ledward Kaapana, Woody Mann, his band 'Thieves of Sleep' or anybody else. Don't hesitate to buy this CD and go for the rest of Bob's stuff.

          5 out of 5 stars Woah!!.......1999-10-07

This one blew me away instantly. Top-notch performances by two masters. The sound quality is so good you'd swear these two guys were sitting in your living room. This is my third CD featuring Cyril. Now it's time to catch up on Brozman.
