Don't overextend your expectations -- enjoy!.......2000-04-29

This is not The Moody Blues, or Yes. It isn't The Who's "Tommy" or Tull's "Aqualung". It is just a handful of random songs from the '60's. If that is what you seek, or you want to fill some gaps in your collection, or you just cannot find the Wee-Five's greatest hits, this is fine.

Indeed, there is no theme, no nexus between the songs. They are unrelated, save the fact that they all seemed to get lots of airplay back in the day. Where else might one find "You Don't Own Me", or "You Were On My Mind"? For that reason these '45's on CD are nice collections.

My only beef remains that there is a lot of empty space in these discs. They could put twice as many songs on one.

Another corporate-created random collection of '60s tunes.......2000-02-15

Why on Earth would anyone think that this is supposed to be aBeatles compilation? The title is pretty clear, I think: "45'son CD -- 1964-1965." That covers a pretty wide girth.

This is basically another one of your '60s collections that have been thrown together without much thought as to theme. It jumps willy-nilly from country (Roger Miller's "King of the Road"), to sappy ballads ("You've Got Your Troubles"), to the standard frat-house stompers ("Wooly Bully"), to folk-rock ("You Were On My Mind") to surf ("Little Honda"). None of these tunes really work together. It's your standard cut-and-paste collection of '60s tunes.

A mediocre collection at best. END

Beatles fans - FORGET IT........1998-08-29

Think this is a Beatles CD collection of 45's - WRONG.

It's just an ordinary compilation CD (Various Artists, The Beatles have ONE track called 'My Bonnie' - From Hamburg Days).

As a compilation it holds no surprises and am sure that there are better ones to be found.

Pioneering Philly soul from the girl who challenged the might of Motown and almost beat it.

The recordings of Nella Dodds have charmed collectors of Northern Soul and girl groups for more than 35 years. Although Nella was scheduled to have a vinyl album in the mid 60s, it was never released. "This Is A Girl's Life" collects up all 15 of the tracks that she cut for Philadelphia's Dyno-Dynamic Productions (leased by New York's Wand label) between 1964 and 1966. Three of them have never been heard in public since the day they were recorded, more than 41 years ago.

Besides Nella, others who participated in these sessions include musicians who went on to form the core of MFSB, legendary Philly DJ/songwriter Jimmy Bishop - discoverer of and mentor to a host of other Philadelphia soul greats, most notably Barbara Mason - and Philadelphia International co-founder Kenneth Gamble, who wrote many of the songs.

These were the only recordings that Nella Dodds made during soul's golden era. Happily she's still around, singing, acting (she's in the Bruce Almighty follow-up film Evan Almighty) and totally thrilled that her early recordings are at last being enshrined on compact disc for soul lovers of all ages.

Petula's French mid-sixties recordings.......2002-10-27

This wonderful collection covers Petula's recordings of late 1964 (the first six) and 1965, the period when she revived her career in Britain and achieved fame in America.

So, you will find version of her hits Downtown (Dans le temps), I know a place (Viens avec moi), You'd better come home (Il faut revenoir) and Round every corner (Va toujour plus loin). Dans le temps is not a translation of Downtown, but a completely different song set to the same tune. The words are melancholy, but unless you know French, you wouldn't realise it from listening to it. I found the English translation of the French lyrics on Petula's official website.

Jack and John is an obscure song that Petula has recorded an English version for. Better known is Regardez-les, the English version of which is Just say goodbye. The version of Hello Dolly included here is half-English half-French. Petula had a French hit with a totally French version (available on Anthologie 3) but never recorded a totally English version. Petula ulso sings brilliant French versions of A well respected man (Kinks) and Nobody I know (written by the Beatles for Peter and Gordon).

Among the French songs here, La gadoue was a top ten hit for Petula in France, and there are plenty of other wonderful songs here to enjoy.
