Born to be Reflective.................2007-02-05
Keeping on with rockin' selections - I have a most worthy biker fest celebration for all of you. Yes, it's Steppenwolf and John Kay as the master of ceremonies! Even as we speak- Metamorpho is getting out his shades and revving up his magic carpet to take journeys into the unknown. (Some say "Stay in your own mind Metamorpho, that is unknown enough for you"). I scoff at that. Wouldn't you?
So, what have we here? Gritty, husky, distictive vocals by John Kay. Motorcycles, motorcycle mamas, social commentary, political barbs and superb rock construction. Oh yes- and sex too. Guido would definitely approve. Steppenwolf was always a male-dominated dominion. However, political correctness aside - the music was just too damn good to give it a bad rap.
Of course we have here the great eternal staples of "Born to Be Wild" (is it really about riding a bike?) and "Magic Carpet Ride" (John Kay as house genie for sure). These songs reveal the elements which many songs afterwards would often employ. The musky organ grinding on one side and the guitar riffing on the other. All in the mix. All other instruments contribute- however, along with John's vocals, this was the "sound" of Steppenwolf.
Also, don't think that they weren't diverse. They could do a rock stroll like "Don't Step On the Grass, Sam" (anti-government) and "The Pusher" (anti-hard drug). Rock raves like "Rock Me" and "Hey Lawdy Mama". And soft rock ballads like "Snowblind Friend" (cocaine addiction) and "Tenderness" (abusive love relationships). Steppenwolf's song topics were not shallow or void of diversity, as we can see. A song in this compilation that I find quite good is "Screaming Night Hog". Listen to the interplay of instruments on this song. Amazing. They hit a groove and never let up. Listen to the guitar riff- the mirroring of the organ, the harmonica riff. The see-saw effect of the mix. Listen to this one loud.
Last, but not least, the incredible tri-umphant "Monster/Suicide/America".
John Kay's history lesson with tough questions indeed. An incredible work. One section seguing into another with their own distinctive pattern. The blend only adds to the urgency of the message. And, what about the message? Precise, clear, and as evident today as it was when it was written. Seems some things never change.
For anyone who loves rock - this collection is indispensible. Miss this one at your peril (mind you, stray embers are everywhere these days).
I guess that's it for now children. I have to now get busy formulating my Seer's lesson plan for T. He's doing well on tests though- but getting a B+ on the last one gave your beloved Seer great concern.
Ah well--

Steppenwolf earned its place in the rock pantheon thanks to "Born to Be Wild," the deathless classic immortalized in the 1969 counterculture flick Easy Rider. But there was more to John Kay & Co. than a theme song for motorcycle rallies. Steppenwolf also offered social commentary in the form of "Snowblind Friend" and "The Pusher," prime psychedelia ("Magic Carpet Ride"), and plenty of good-time hard rock ("Hey Lawdy Mama," "Rock Me"). In some ways, they were the thinking person's hard rock band (a specialty niche, to be sure, with Kay's band taking their name, after all, from a Hermann Hesse novel). Alas, like so many examples of MCA's 20th Century Masters collection, this Steppenwolf set contains some fine music, but is inferior to a previous package--1999's All-Time Greatest Hits, which offers many more tracks for just a couple more bucks. --Daniel DurchholzCustomer Reviews:
one thing leads to another.......2007-05-05
All that stuff`s on the web about where they came from and who`s who so I won`t trash that again here but I will say as a small time musician that plays along I really do love this album and all the songs that`s on it.
Somebody went to a lot of work picking out the songs `cause they`re all from different albums I guess but the right ones are here if you just want a taste or a small meal.
The cover is kinda like a lot of others but I see it`s all just rock and roll and that`s that but if you like Rock Art there`s the full records by this band and they`re great especially if you`re UI even so they`re still not like what everybody else did and that speaks for itself.
Unless you were born in the stone age there`s a song called Born to be Wild on this CD and it`s one you have to listen to a couple of times to find a sweet place to listen maybe ten thousand feet.
Magic Carpet Ride is next not bad but if you`ve heard it an hundred times or more you might try and find the other solution in between the lines just the same some fair Rock and Roll here.
It`s Never Too Late follows a track for those that might want a Ballad in their life.
Rock Me is next.... Rock me Baby Rock me Baby all night long!
Snowblind Friend
So far it sounds like somebody`s funeral...! Seriously. Some form of blues I guess but this is Rock and Roll.
Some tasty guitar and an all out voice are all you need to put anything past me and this album has it all.
There`s five more tracks and they`re all just perfect.
I like Alice Cooper, Yes, The Rolling Stones and one Ted Nugent album but Steppenwolf is just the best of all. What I mean is there`s no way to put Steppenwolf down as just another band they`re in class all on their own so if you want a piece of it all give this one a try.
These guys still tour I found the website that books them by mistake on a search and I thought I`d put that down maybe we can see these guys at the Superbowl if enough people want to see something big for change.
Anyways that`s it take care of it.

Steppenwolf the Second.......2007-02-01
Faster Than Speed.......2006-01-08
It opens with 'Faster Than The Speed Of Life', a perfect blend of Steppenwolfish hard rock & Airplanesque psychedelic rock (like 'She Has Funny Cars').
'Tighten Up Your Wing' is an upbeat, bluesy track, that bounces well along, before being replaced with 'None Of Your Doing', a Steppenwolf-classic, that shifts gear between verse & chorus.
'Spiritual Fantasy' is one of the strangest creations on the album, strangely touching, though appaling at first. But given a second chance, it comes across as one of the best tracks on the album.
The marihuana-anthem 'Don't Step On The Grass, Sam' is pure heavy Steppenwolf, a timeless classic, that crunches slowly, but steadily along.
'28' is a great rock song with just a hint of psychedelia in the melody. A neat little rocker that is followed by the ultimate psychedelic dance track.
'Magic Carpet Ride' is simply Steppenwolf's best song ever, a fantastic blend of rhytm, melody & vision, that is worth the price of all Steppenwolf's classic albums on its own. It was also the only of their singles to almost replicate 'Born To Be Wild's US #2 placing, when it shot to #3 on the US chart.
'Disappointment Number' is almost that, but then not again. It is an odd ode to/parody of old blues, complete with bird sounds in the background, as if it's an old blues singer sitting out in the open.
'Lost And Found By Trial And Error' has a great tune, and rocks away well, as does 'Hodge, Podge, Strained Through A Leslie' and 'Resurrection'. Both employ the classic Steppenwolf sound in a great rocking way, to become, if not classics, then at least Steppenwolf-standards.
The album closes with 'Reflections' a weird song, that seems like somebody trying to be visionary, before you realize that that is just what he is. Just in a very peculiar way.
The album has some, if not weak, then not too powerful spots, but generally it is a more than worthy follow-up to the first Steppenwolf album, with a great blend of the band's traditional hard rock and a form of psychedelia that suits them perfectly. Even the least interesting tracks rock nicely, & no-one should have anything to complain about here...
Work in progress!.......2005-10-06
Ironically, Magic carpet ride has been the most commercial piece for the great audiences: it possesses originality and highly expressive character; the organ is the basic support instrument and that was by itself a very remarkable idea. I must insist in an aspect many times forgotten: in those ages you had to engage the exigent auduiences through the rhthym: The Video Clip was an inexistent term, and to get the total acknowldedge of so many people with such golden bands in action for that moment, was a
task nothing easy to reach.
Somehow the excessive popularity gotten by the band with this single, obligated them to rethink their original target and purpose: Magic Carpet ride was in the opposite side of the street respect to Born to be wild their everlasting hymn.
If you are a hard fan of Steppenwolf or simply a minutely searcher or collector of the greatest bands of the bands, this album is fundamental for you, because it's an important piece in the wide gamut of musical forms that came derivating from pioneer bands such as Vanilla Fudge, Deep Purple or the Doors for instance, both bands were supported by the organ too, so it is easy to foolow the traces of the first experiences with the Moog Synthetizer, that would reach a sum peak with Yes and Emerson Lake and Palmer.
Go for this record because even Steppenwolf has not acquired their definitive musical personality, you can realize some changes are going on, and so make the link with Monster (their most solid and mature album), just before to initiate their gradual decay with later albums.
This is an album that delineates his raising profile, I mean the epic journey.

BTW, there's lots of snaky guitar work being performed on this album - their lead was the quintessinal rock guitarist of the 60's - and you could say the 70's as well.
Too bad they are still not around with the same members as then - they were a very compatible group of musicians.

'Draft Resister' follows in the vein of the first track's greatness. It is dark, gloomy hard rock, notable for the same abundance of great melodies, that was shown on the first track (one feels, that these two first songs possess magic enough to fill a whole album with moderate songs, had that been necessary, but instead it's just these two, overflowing with melody and hard rock!)
'Power Play' is almost as strong as 'Draft Resister', that is, quality doesn't fall, but neither does it rise. All what was said of good things about 'Draft Resister', however, can also be said about 'Power Play'.
'Move Over' is just magnificent, with its formidable start and right-between-psychedelia-and-disco sounds (meant in a good way). Ought to have joined 'Born To Be Wild' and 'Magic Carpet Ride' in the US Top 3.
'Fag' is far less spectacular than the other songs, not in itself a bad song, just not as delightfully imbued with the overflowing exuberance of the earlier tracks. The least interesting track, it is still good enough, and it doesn't spoil any of the experience. If you listen to the album from beginning to end, it's not like you get bored here and stop the album, it is just not a highlight like the others.
'What Would You Do (If I Did That To You)' is quite simply an awesome rock song, an underrated Steppenwolf-gem, as dark & gloomy as 'Draft Resister', and at the same time as light as 'Move Over'. All these traits are duplicated in the last song, 'From Here To There Eventually', which is almost as good, a bit slower and more epic.
All in all, this is an outstanding album. It gets 4 stars out of 5, because the melancholia of the mood doesn't change enough through the album, making it somewhat depressive to listen to several times. It's not like I don't love dark albums, but, like the case of Joy Division's outings, they can just become too much, and I prefer things like Suede or David Bowie, where more upbeat tracks rescue you now and then, before you plunge even deeper into the dark night of the soul. 'Monster' has more of these upbeat tracks, than for example Joy Division, but the still retain the feeling of emptiness, which fills the entire album (it's on purpose, Steppenwolf has done a masterful job capturing this feeling). But where Bowie's songs are like dark worlds, this is a dark void, and though it is just as brilliant, it is harder to listen to....
Ok, I'll change it to 5 stars, one can't blame them for making an album that captures emptiness... that doesn't make the art less magical...

A work that established a surprising musical crossroad ! .......2007-08-07
Under the light of thirty five years elapsed, this album may be considered in many aspect as a true pioneer of the blue metal.
After having achieved a cult status with their emblematic pieces Born to be wild, Monster Move over and Don' step on the grass, Sam, this band experienced a powerful turn to new horizons with this futurist album that established a crucial turning point in their career, because in those lyrics the bitter cry of a generation tired of fighting, looked back their recent achievements and defeats; Snow-blind friend, for instance reflected as just a few a terrible dramatis personae; in many ways this is a very introspective gaze that reaffirmed and at the same time warned the young people who had fiercely fought for the realization of a dream, to be aware about the new challenges to come.
Few albums like this one may be regarded so interesting, original and creative. To my mind this work signified for them the close of their fabulous career; just realize their next project was a sensible creative step down, when you compare them.
Steppenwolf will be reminded in the Rock history as one of the most original bands in years, for many reasons, his historical and futurist cry battle # heavy metal" in Born to be wild and their outstanding status among the great bands by then.

Live Baby, Come On! Steppenwolf! .......2007-03-03
But all of the songs versions are very well done. The standards have additional parts giving them more color and dimension while the fillers get beefed up a bit. Heck, I'd say the versions on these beat their studio counterparts in many instances such as the guitar work on the tail ends of both "Born" and "Carpet", just to name a couple examples.
The Wolf's in your face Centrist attitude, much like CCR practiced, was a great way to flip off the Establishment as well. They seem like the kind of group if they were big today would have told both Toby Keith and Dixie Chicks to "sit and spin" on John Kaye's middle finger. They weren't followers by any means nor were they radicals like Airplane or the overrated sterile noodling castor oil sounds of The Dead.
This particular CD, Steppenwolf Live, is a great introduction to the group. Forget all the countless greatest hits compilations...we've heard all those before time and time again.
The only gripe I have about this one, which takes away one star, is how buried in the mix Goldy's keyboards are. His trademark buzzy grinding organ sound is what let you know immediately it was The Wolf.
Other than that, I rank this one up there with 4 Way Street, Wheels Of Fire and Live At Leeds. It's not perfect, but it lets you know that, live or not, The Wolf in just doing their songs as they did them live showed that they were no slouches by any means when it came to giving it 100%.

All together now
"...their vote is a meaningless joke.
They babble about law and order
But it's all just an echo of what they've been told.
Yeah, there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into a noose
And it just sits there watching.
Now we are fighting a war over there
That no matter who wins
You know we can't pay the cost
America, where are you now,
Don't you care about your sons and daughters?
Don't you know we need you now,
We can't fight alone against the monster?"
And kids (anyone 25 or younger) that from a band considered ok at the time. If you haven't heard this version of Monster, that's worth the price of admission alone. If you think 60's music was only about getting high and getting laid, think again. A lot of the lyrics were not only timely, they were prophetic at the same time.

The Pusher and Born to be wild were an authentic explossion of newness, filled of inspiration. In this sense I think this was the most solid and auspicious debut of a rock band until that date.
May be the exception would come a few years later with the First Album of Led Zepellin.
So the historical importance of this album surmounts by far, any other adjective. Go for this album and disclover the First Opus of that super band.

4.5 stars - A solid debut from the classic hard rockers.......2004-09-14
One of the greatest rock and roll bands of the late sixties and early seventies was Steppenwolf. Sadly though, the band is often passed off as a one-hit wonder due to the success of their track, Born To Be Wild. The fact of the matter is that the band released a variety of excellent material over the years, even though the vast majority of it is unknown to many casual rock and roll fans. How does the band's debut album, originally released in 1968, measure up? Read on for my review.
This is an absolutely incredible classic rock album, and it's a shame so much of it is overlooked by so many. The Girl I Knew and Sookie Sookie, though excellent songs, failed to achieve any chart success. But the third single released from the album, Born To Be Wild, was an almost instant success, which remains a rock and roll classic to this day. Over the years, the song has gotten a ton of radio play and has been featured in a virtually infinite number of films. This rock classic was written by Dennis Edmondton, former band member and the brother of Jerry Edmondton (who is credited under the pseudonym Mars Bonfire.) The band made a rather smart move of putting this song in the middle of the album, so that listeners wouldn't just skip to the beginning or end and ignore the other material present. Other excellent tracks present include a cover of Willie Dixon's blues classic, Hoochie Coochie Man and Hoyt Axton's The Pusher. Surprisingly though, most of the songs on here are band originals! In the sixties, most band's debut albums were heavy on cover songs, and there really aren't a whole lot of them on this album. In the end, this stands as a solid album.
To date in America (as of September 13, 2004), the version of this album readily available in America on CD is the original CD issue. I don't have any issues with the sound quality on this reissue - it's about as good as an album from this era could sound. However, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find, and the limited amount of liner notes is disappointing. Hopefully it will get reissued.
To conclude this review, Steppenwolf's debut is a solid classic rock album through and through. If you're a fan of classic rock, this is one of those albums that you've just gotta add to your collection. Don't overlook this band's more popular material in favor of their underrated masterpiece - doing so is a mistake too many people make.
Steppenwolf rides "Born to Be Wild" almost to the top spot.......2004-03-17
Actually "Born to Be Wild" was the third single from this album, following "The Girl I Knew" and "Sookie Sookie," but neither of those made a dent in the charts and "Born to Be Wild" exploded on the national consciousness. You can make the argument that the phrase "heavy metal" comes from this song, which was written by Dennis Edmonton, brother of drummer Jerry Edmonton and former band member, under the pseudonym Mars Bonfire. Originally the song was slower and more of a ballad, but then somebody came up with that thundering opening guitar riff and the rest was music history. We are thirty-five years down the road and this is still THE biker anthem of all-time.
Fortunately "Born to Be Wild" comes in the middle of the album (penultimate track on side one) so that listeners had the opportunity to notice Steppenwolf did other songs. However, on this debut effort the best ones are not written by bad members, with the cover of Don Covay's "Sookie, Sookie," Willie Dixon's "Hoochie Coochie Man," and the riveting take on Hoyt Axton's "The Pusher." These last two tracks are over five minutes long, unusual for the time, and along with the emphasize on blues on this album suggests more in common with the early days of Led Zeppelin than you would have thought at first glimpse. "Everybody's Next One" is probably the best of the original tunes by John Kay, usually working in collaboration with someone else (producer Gabriel Mekler in this case), the song sounding like a British Invasion tune but with a harder edge and Goldy McJohn's often overlooked organ playing. But there is enough sub-par efforts here to keep this from being a really great debut album. Instead "Steppenwolf" provides a solid basis for the group to build on as their first big hit disappears into the rearview mirror.

Pure Classic.......2006-06-11
'Don't Cry' is quite simply THE BEST STEPPENWOLF SONG NEVER TO BE A SINGLE - or at least a hit, I mean, I don't think it was a single anyway... but it certainly wasn't a hit, though I think it's even better than 'Rock Me', though that one deserved its Top Ten placing.
'Chicken Wolf' and 'Lovely Meter' are standard, above-the-rest-of-the-pack Steppenwolf songs, but the band really approaches the heights of their opening track with 'Round And Down', which could be said to be their second greatest not-single, though this time, I'm not so sure...
'It's Never Too Late' is a wonderful anthem. At first it seems a bit bombastic, but hear it a couple of times, and you'll also start loving it.
'Sleeping Dreaming' is funny, and as chaotic as the stranger outings of Jefferson Airplane (like 'A Small Package Of Value Will Come To You, Shortly') and The Beatles ('Dig It')! A kind of "song", that only could have been made in the 60's...
'Jupiter Child', the next highlight, is a great rock song with a powerful riff, while 'She'll Be Better' and 'Cat Killer' arguably beats it. Then 'Rock Me' arrives, their third greatest hit, and, though many other songs surpasses it, still a marvellous gem of rock'n'roll. Even if it's an attempt to capture the spirit of 'Born To Be Wild' once again, then at least it's a great attempt!!!
'God Fearing Man' is a more serious creation, but one which completely dwarfs the otherwise finely crafted 'Mango Juice'. 'Happy Birthday' closes the album with a mystic & brilliant invocation, childhood, the unknown, simply magic, perhaps the only track on this record to rival the splendour of 'Don't Cry', but doing it with completely other means than those that Steppenwolf have become known for!
