The CD's liner notes define satori as "the indescribable experience of sudden, intuitive spiritual realization." That may be, yet unless you are a serious student of yoga or a fan of its ancient musical traditions, you may struggle to reach such a state while listening to these improvisations for shakuhachi flute (Riley Lee) and koto (Gabriel Lee, no relation). The recording's mood is almost somber and contrasts noticeably with Oriental Sunrise and Sanctuary, two splendid Riley Lee discs that offer a broader, more expressive tonal range. Here a stronger Oriental mood is conveyed, and the notion of stillness is pursued with such earnestness that the final result (to Occidental ears) is ultimately a state of inertia. While composers sometimes refer to the use of silence as an overt creative element in their works, Satori relies so heavily on the approach that it seems as though Lee's flute is being filtered through a dense fog, and from a substantial distance. Satori, originally recorded in 1983, seems best suited to serious-minded yoga practitioners and those who prefer to adorn their meditative states with only the most minimal of audio embellishments. For such people, this disc could be the answer to prayers. For others interested in shakuhachi music, the two aforementioned discs are likely to be more satisfying choices. --Terry Wood

Fantastic CD for meditation. The music is simply beautiful, and it also helps me concentrate better when I am working.

4 out of 5 stars Good for background.......2007-03-19

If you aren't a teacher who is a good "yoga DJ", this is good background music for class.

5 out of 5 stars Satori-Music for Yoga and Meditation.......2006-12-18

The sound is open and spacious, highly evocative and emotionally complex.
If what you'll looking for is a delicate sensitivity, the warmth of wood, without
western music structure or pulse, you'll enjoy this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Perfection.......2004-01-13

This is one of the deepest, most spiritual pieces of music you may ever hear. The title track, Satori, is beyond words.
True Zen. It is about nothing and about everything. There is the repeated, plaintive cry of a mist-shourded horn and a deep sense of melancholic loss. The stillness resonates and builds to a feeling of resolution, light, color and the after-life.
Guaranteed to transport the mind.
One can only hope such a place truly exists.

5 out of 5 stars A Rare and Wonderful Spiritual Journey.......2002-05-07

I must admit, when it comes to this album and it's companion, Oriental Sunrise, I am more than a bit biased. I was the producer, recording engineer and co-editor for the original recordings of both albums, released on Plumeria Productions Hawaii label, in 1983. Few people know and Riley might be reluctant to advertise that all the music was "channeled" or improvised and recorded during one five-hour live session, in Lanikai, on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu. It was a truly magical experience I will never forget.
Gabriel Lee and I edited the five hours and arranged it into two distinctly different albums. Oriental Sunrise contains the brighter, more accessable "day" music and Satori, the deeper, darker "night" hues.
By today's or even 1983 standards, the technical quality was less than professional and I was very pleased that Riley chose to transcribe the music and re-record both albums. I was particularly pleased to see that he recorded Satori with the co-creator of the music, Gabriel Lee.
Both Satori and Oriental Sunrise contain what can truly be called "inspired" music. I know. I was there.

5 out of 5 stars The Acme, the Pinnacle, the Zenith, the Ultimate .......2007-07-04

I first heard Flower Travellin' Band on Hawaiian underground radio in the early 70's and captured Satori on reel-to-reel. It took about five more years before I found it on vinyl LP in a Japanese department store in Honolulu. Then a space of about 30 years before I again found it on CD. Each time was sonic Nirvana. This is a superb recording, one of a kind, I'd say. Don't think twice, just order it immediately! You will not be disappointed. When you play it for your like-minded friends, I know they will want a copy (but be fair to FTB, tell them to buy one from Amazon like you did).

4 out of 5 stars Amazing piece of Japan Heavy Pshych.......2006-11-10

When everybody in the west were dazed by the sounds of Black Sabbath, Depp Purple, Uriah Heep and so, in the east they were capable of rebuild this sounds and going further

A serie of bands heading by The Flower Travelling band were mixing japanese culture, psichedelia and heavy rock with a layer of mistery, angst and poetry...

This record has been a cult piece for many years, is the second of this band, they began covering their heroes in a first recording and on this everything learned is reflected.

Satori is structured in suites, above all i would sugest for first bite Satori 2nd, a song which would be the best thriller soundtrack, wich reflects how japan understood Black Sabbath. In sons as third suite japanese culture and music is very present, not making the songs boring but giving them a psichedelic style very original and enjoyable.

Now is reissued with original artwork and sleevenotes for every hard rocker delight

5 out of 5 stars OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-09-17

Order it immediately and count down the days until your mind will be blown. It's like Can and Black Sabbath made love and gave birth to Godzilla and instead of trashing Tokyo he just smoked out and ROCKED. Heavier than a thousand planets, tripper than if the end of of 2001 was really happening to you right now, and you really were a giant immortal baby hovering in space, and if that were true then forget Strauss, these guys would be the house band. Don't let next Thursday be another day that you've lived without hearing this.

I bought this purely on a whim... $10 at my local record store, and it kept catching my eye every time I looked through the ska section. The day I broke down and got it will be fondly remembered for the rest of my life. The closest thing I think I've ever heard to Satori's sound is Rustic Overtones, only these guys pump it up a notch all around. The lineup is all-star, with members of the RxBandits, Chris Murray, and I believe Westbound Train. The album is very positive, with excellent flow and unified sound, and catchy as hell but never at all anoying. Some of the new best music of the decade at least. This could be the fourth wave folks.

5 out of 5 stars the best French techno-pop.......2001-08-27

I first knew about Etienne Daho when I heard him sing Quelq Un Qui m'Ressemble together with Sylvie Vartan and Francoise Hardy in the Sylvie Vartan's CD "Irrésistiblement Sylvie". I got inmediately interested in the song and in his voice. Since then I've bought 5 CDs by Daho. I can say he's the best to perform French techno-pop (as in this CD), his voice sounds also very nice in beautiful ballads that appear most of all in other, more recent, CDs as Paris Ailleurs or Corps et Armes. I enjoy that in all of them the songs are fully orchestrated and have fine arrangements.

5 out of 5 stars HERE IT IS.......2000-11-25

Maybe the best pop record of french music history. With 'Pop Satori' ('satori' is the zen word for 'nirvana') Etienne Daho has integrated the classic french wit for songs with extraordinary and danceable melodies. Sweet and sour, inteligent and fashionable, 'Pop Satori' is one of the best 80s records worldwide!

SATORI - A SUDDEN AWAKENING AND PROFOUND UNDERSTANDING

LISA REAGAN has an angelic voice that combines the sensitivity of Loreena McKennit and the sensual timelessness of Lisa Gerrard. Her poetic lyrics and mystic chants are intertwined through haunting melodies and driving rhythms on SATORI. A singer with the Washington Opera, she mixes a wide variety of influences from Irish melodies and Middle Eastern harmonies to African rhythms and more. SATORI is a portal to another world of timeless spirituality and inner awareness. A true gift of spiritual awakening.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars intriguing vocalist and debut album.......2005-01-29

This is an impressive first effort by a promising new age female vocalist. Lisa Reagan's voice is haunting and strongly reminiscent of Loreena McKennitt. McKennitt is, in my opinion, the better artist of the two, but if you like McKennitt's work, you will like this album.

In addition to Reagan's voice, the music on this album has a strong beat, thanks to some expert drum work (somewhat unusual for new age), and good work on the strings. The best track is "I call the rain," which has an almost irresistible catchy chorus you will find yourself humming long after the song is done. Other strong tracks are "Spirit Dance" and "Tapestries in Time."

In sum, if you like the work of such artists as Loreena McKennitt, Enya, Deanta, Maire Brennan, and Lynn Morrison, this album is definitely worth a listen.

2 out of 5 stars Misses the mark.......2004-08-22

The music is kind of interesting. I think the artist is trying to be deep but the lyrics miss the mark. They just never take hold. This may have been a better instrumental album. I'm not sure that I would give this CD a second listen.

asm2006 INVISIBLE RHYTHM - Satori

A deep and intimate journey featuring primitive flutes, vintage synthesizers and exotic percussion gently woven together to form an organic ambient tapestry. Within the rich harmonic drones, resonant voices and hyper-environmental trances, Satori explores the modern primitive psyche. This incarnation of the Satori collective: (Crystal Michelle Rayburn and Barry Stramp with contributions from Joel Young and Bill Laswell).

The first time I heard this album was on a flight to Alaska in deep winter. Each time I hear it, I am transported to the vast ice and snow in the twilight of an arctic day and I can feel the wind against my face and see the brilliance of the Northern Lights. I have shared this album with many of my clients, I am a massage therapist, and would recommend it for anyone who craves a musical experience that is unique and memorable. I own three copies of this album! Enjoy!

WARNING: this will sound similiar to other reviews. Now just so you folks know, The Flower Travellin Band is not widely known. This album came out liek 20 years ago, and I guess that I am just another person who saw deadly outlaw:rekka and had to find out everything possible about ths band. This album has 5 tracks, and they are all some of the best shlt you will hear. And yes, I instantly though of blakc sabbath when I heard the music. SO DANG YOU PEOPLE, I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO KNEW OF JAPAN'S BLACK SABBATH:)

Oh well, go out and fet this, I promise you will not be dissapointed, btw-you will need the movie for the subtitles for the japanese lyrics:)

You will need to be able to hear every word ozzy speaks to understand the english on this album:)

5 out of 5 stars NOT ENOUGH STARS!.......2006-04-26

prime Japanese proto-metal truly essential for all you scholars of the heavy..Heavy in every sense of the word, truly psychedelic stuff - personally, dont hear too much of the Sabbath vibe here but it is fairly riffy for the time! The blending of East/West elements just makes this trip all the more unique.YOU GOTTA HEAR THIS!!

5 out of 5 stars Rockin'..........2005-05-03

I first was introduced to this amazing import from the Takashi Miike film Deadly Outlaw Rekka. My only regret is not knowing of this band sooner, contained here on Satori is what I would consider part of early metal history. To describe the sound, the easiest description I could give would be to say they are the japanese Black Sabbath and if you are a fan of Sabbath and other early metal pioneers you owe it to yourself to pick up this import.

i didn't realize that bauhaus was a heavy metal band. a somewhat decent attempt at adulation. great production value, but its a good thing the songs are so strong. if only we could have taught these bands how to announciate. bauhaus deserves better.

4 out of 5 stars Bauhaus??? Yes indeed and totally different!.......2003-01-04

OK so I'm not a fan of tribute albums. Most really stink. But every once in a while something comes along that get's it right. It stands on it's own merits and delivers the goods and then some. This is just one of those very very few tribute albums of quality.

Of course if you're a head in the ground goth you will definitely hate it so don't bother. Then again if the whole concept of an "alternative" is truly appealing then this might just do the trick.

It's actually hard to decribe the type of music on this disc. It's actually not Goth at all. Very modern, almost Techo/Punk treatments of the songs of Bauhaus. Quite an interesting mix of tracks as well. I for one like it. I think you have to have a few years under your belt to appreciate this collection. If you really do like Bauhaus because of how far they went in those 4 years, if you find all the different styles of music they incorporated into their sounds appealing, if you realize that for the most part Bauhaus didn't really play much Gothic music and were for all intents and purposes an Art Rock/Glam/Post Punk bank and you love them for it, then you'll like this disc.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Konitz in an unusual setting.......2006-01-29

This date is full of wonderful moments of rich interplay as well as outstanding solos. Lee Konitz never fails to amaze me - he always seems to bring out the best in the group he is playing with, both individually and collectively. Some of Konitz's collaborations with Martial Solal are really very abstract and way out there compared to this recording which contains some pretty straight ahead playing - plus that extra spice that Martial Solal's wonderful lines and harmonisations bring to the procedings. Alongside that, you also have unpredictable and exuberant tunes that could only be Solal. Then add to that the quite remarkable Dick Katz on electric piano and you have some pretty amazing moments to savour. Martial Solal does know when to lay back and often sits out to let Konitz work with bass or drums or both - great variations in textures. However, it is the interplay between Konitz and Solal which is so outstanding and Solal's wide vocabulary of amazing pianistic effects. I have over 70 Konitz albums on CD and this is one of the best despite some offensive words in one of the other reviews. Just listen to the samples to see what I mean.

5 out of 5 stars a wonderfull group.......2002-07-10

this was the first konitz record i bought and i spent many a night learning about jazz with this record. i totally disagree with the other reviewer. this after all is konitz, dejohnette holland and solal i learned a lot from this record and records by the members of this band, they started a lifelong voyage with jazz for me.

2 out of 5 stars Weak, Directionless Jazz.......2000-11-28

I hoped this would be a challenging, exciting album, especially with the line-up (Konitz, DeJohnette, Holland, etc). As it turns out, Satori is just a boring exercise in shapelessness. The standards here are supposed to be played conceptually, but the group plays like it had no idea what it was going to do prior to beginning. Any interesting musical ideas that pop up on the album are abandoned almost immediately in favor of wanking. Particularly atrocious is Marital Solal's gross overplaying and lack of ability to listen to the other musicians. Further weakening the album is the poor sound quality, typical of 70's jazz. Holland's bass and DeJohnette's drums sound thin and empty. This one belongs in the bargain bin.
