Mellow mixed with Upbeat Euphoria.......2002-06-09

An overall good album for the jazz or brazilian enthusiast, but only a few tracks that I absolutely love. These tracks, however, I can listen to on and on and have yet to grow tired of. "Capoeira Love Affair" is a beautiful song, haunting portuguese vocals in the background. "Suco" is a typical upbeat latin jazz piece; I love the bass and piano, and the nice muted brass. The rest of the album, however, cannot be played extensively without growing tired of the boring and overly-optimistic lyrics. Nice instrumentation; unfortunately the vocals overwhelm.

Tasty nu-jazz from Japan, without the noodles.......2002-11-28

Disorient's first label compilation shows what they've been fancying at the Mr. Bongo record shop in Japan, which would be achingly up to date nu-jazz treasures from mostly Japanese artists, aimed for sophisticated dance floors and cool cafes. And Giles Peterson.

So there's Kaori (Berlin techno's Thomas Schumacher in warm fuzzy mode) with "Good Life" equal parts hip-shaking swing and filter/EQ abuse, Latin piano licks gliding along thick percussive breaks on Takada/Ashley Beedle's "Ole Le," classy crooning from Mark Murphy via Tenth & Parker/King Britt on "Kool Down," and (gasp) Miyazawa's Brazillian makeover from Truby Trio via "Anjos Ilmaos." Oh yes, Coldfeet's sunset classic "In My Lucid Dream," all gentle guitars and soft beats, and Mr. Hermano's Charlie Brown theme with vocal (a compliment) "Free as the Morning Sun" are here as well.

Hmm, so it's basically flawless (excepting Masters At Work's dated disco) and brilliantly packaged to boot. Note to Disorient; on with the sequel, and sort it out quicker next time.

This is techno-jazz music from Japanese performers Su-Paka-Pooh and company - produced in the U.K. (Disorient Recordings, Sussex). It is a mix of electronic and acoustic music. Very groovy. Keyboards by Shinji Nakamura, Bass by Zakitsu and Iketch. Percussions: Hidero Nishioka, Hiromi Kikuchi, Yasuha Hirai, Taiji Nakano. Trumpet: Hidero Nishioka. Vocals (in english) by Asato, Sey (Rockakongs), Tomoko Hiratsuka, and Mika Arisaka. There are other performers too numerous to mention.

The music is very soothing, rhythmic and envigorating.

I bought the vinyl version of this album once at a market in Barcelona, and since then I play it sparingly to keep the atmosphere the music creates from becoming recognition instead of that certain atmosphere that something well constructed can occansionally induce.
Not necessary ingenious, but crafted well enough for the listener (me being prototype listener today) not to be bothered at all and even not pay any attention to the song structures and drift to wherever it is the artist wanted to take you.
Surprisingly enough, I never found anything else by Coldfeet except on amazon, were everything seems to be out of stock too. I don't even know where these Coldfeet people hail from...
But this review might be completely biased because of the circumstances under which I acquired the album.
