The falsetto vocals and improvised violin arrangements that mark El Ave De Mi Sonar: Mexican Sones Huastecos aren't necessarily for the casual music listener, but they typify a unique genre. Sones huastecos are festive, poetic folk songs highlighted by those elements, along with rhythmic-guitar accompaniment. Hard-edged violin improvisations, driving guitar rhythms, and soaring falsetto vocal excursions mark the son huasteco, one of Mexico's most distinctive and celebrated regional styles of music. Raised on the cattle and sugar cane ranches of the Huastecan region of northeastern Mexico, the three men of Los Camperos de Valles are acclaimed international ambassadors for their music, their region, and their nation. El Ave de mi Soñar (The Bird of My Dreams) fuses age-old Huastecan repertoire, masterful stylings, and original poetry of musician-poet Artemio Posadas to create a deeply traditional, yet highly creative, monument to Mexican music.

El falsete mas hermoso y la poesia mas romantica.......2005-08-06

This is not the most informative introductory recording of son huasteco, the regional style of Mexican music associated with the Huasteca region along the gulf coast of Mexico. However, this is one of the most beautiful son huasteco recordings ever released.

The coplas are written by Artemio Posadas, a musicians who has labored for a long time at the East Bay Center for the Arts, in Richmond, CA, teaching youth son huasteco and son jarocho--these are some of the most beautiful lyrics ever to be written. On La Malaguena for example he tells his beloved:

Tengo celos de la luna
que cada noche te admira
aunque lejos mi fortuna
sin esperanza se viera
yo te canto una por una
las rimas que tu me inspiras.

Los Camperos de Valles, who are the most well-known son huasteco trio outside of Mexico, are from Ciudad Valles, San Luis Potosi. Marcos Hernandez and Gregorio Solano perform the coplas for the sones with exquisite expression and musicality. Joel Monroy, the first violinist for the Camperos after Heliodoro Copado stopped playing with them, plays the voilin brillantly.

This recording was originally released independantly and I congratulate Smithsonian institute, becuase the way that they remastered the recording makes the lyrics and the music stand out more clearly.

Unlikely Angels.......2002-05-01

My one and only previous encounter with this regal named group was at a Mexican restaurant in the lovely university town of Utrecht, Holland: famous for its church towers and canals. The restaurant was quiet, brick walls on either side of myself and a sweet and smart woman, and old fashioned food that could fill anyone one up. It was our last night together, the end of a inexplicable trip. As we dipped our hands into our shared dish and stared at each other chewing under the soft yellow lights, this was our background music. It grew, to crescendo after crescendo, no without pretention: soul after soul.
All Mexican restaurant music is the same, and the dusty bands are quite satisfied with their role. But this went farther. It grew, it contracted, and it added to the light and shadows of the ordinary space that we happened to be in. I called the waitress over and made her play it again, again, and once more again. No one else in the restaurant seemed to mind, they even stopped talking and they listened.

Album Description

Macuilxochitl is an ensemble of five young Herrera brothers who play "sones huastecos" with sophistication far beyond their young ages. They perform with an aggressive, energetic and passionate style that is exhilarating. They remain truly authentic to this marvelous musical genre.

The "Huasteca" region consist of several states of eastern and central Mexico, including, Veracruz, Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosi, Queretaro, Hidalgo, and Puebla. The "son huasteco's" music style is part of the intricate Mexican music genre known as the "son". It requires virtuosity and mastery of the following instruments: the violin, the five string "jarana huasteca", and the "guitarra quinta" or "huapanguera".
