5 out of 5 stars Introduction to Russian 101.......2007-02-09

Growing up post-WWII, and in college and the military during the Cold War, I wanted to understand my "enemy", a the military demands. This album was part of my learning, and is just good music. Many pop and rockers will not be interested: their loss. Bikel took folk singing a step further, and even not understanding all the words (I took Russian in college), it has a good intro to the Russian "soul", from Ivan the Terrible to Putin.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Double Album From Theodore Bikel.......2006-04-15

I have owned the LP of "Songs of a Russian Gypsy" since the early 60's, and it has always been a favorite. This record was a "breakthrough hit" for Elektra records in the early days (See "Follow The Music" by Jac Holzman and Gavan Daws).
"Songs of a Russian Gypsy" was re-issued as a CD by Bainbridge Records, in the 90's, but in limited numbers. When the supply dried up, only an uncertain "used" market remained, with prices quite variable. (see my review of the used CD).
This re-issue also includes another Bikel favorite, "Songs of Russia Old and New". Hopefully, more early Electra Albums will surface through the efforts of Collectors Choice Music!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful introduction to a distinguished new series.......2003-09-29

I can't express how excited I am about this new series from Naxos and the Milken Archive! There is some absolutely stunning music on this sampler, and I can't wait until the full recordings are released. Especially notable are Ernst Toch's "Cantata of the Bitter Herbs" (what gorgeous choral & orchestral writing), Paul Schoenfield's Viola Concerto (utterly fantastic excerpt "King David Dancing Before the Ark"), the excerpt from Joseph Achron's suite from The Golem, "Open the Gates" from Dave Brubeck's Gates of Justice, and the lovely duet from Joseph Rumshinsky's Yiddish operetta "Di goldene kale." Also, if you're not familiar with Jewish liturgical music or with klezmer, there are wonderful examples on this disc. My only disappointment is that, because of economic reasons, most of the recordings had to be made with European ensembles. Although the performances are excellent (under directors Gerard Schwarz, Neville Marriner, Yoel Levi and others), it's just a shame that this music, which, in addition to being Jewish, is also very AMERICAN, cannot be preserved on CD by American ensembles. At any rate, I'm pretty certain that within the next couple of years, I'll have collected all the 50 discs in this project. You don't have to be Jewish to appreciate this great music. And at around $7.00 a disc, they're an incredible value. This marvelous sampler will get you hooked on some fabulous music.

5 out of 5 stars A Tasty Theatrical Adventure of Remarkable Ingenuity.......2007-06-22

Frank London is highly acclaimed as standing at the pinnacle of Jewish music and for those unfamiliar with his gifts, A NIGHT IN THE OLD MARKETPLACE is a wonderful place to start. This CD is a recording of a theatrical work that sets the revered 1907 Yiddish play of the same name by L.L. Peretz. Setting the bizarre tale to music that combines Jewish music, jazz, classical, rock and just about every other form of music from the 20th century into a highly entertaining mix, London has created a solid hit.

The texture of the play is highly reminiscent of the musical works of Kurt Weill, with special emphasis on 'The Threepenny Opera', as well as the old vaudeville klezmer concerts. The music is written by Frank London and the lyrics are by Glen Berger. The simple staging is allowed due to the small pit band required - Tuba/bass, guitar/banjo/mandolin, keyboards/accordion, and drums. The cast of singers (rather singer/actors) represents some amazing talent including Susan McKeown, Manu Narayan, Lorin Sklamberg, Craig Wedren and other singers well known to both Broadway and bands/groups of a great variety.

The production brought to CD is as complete a transfer of a stage work to recording venue as we are likely to hear. Frank London has created a specialized work that thankfully brings to our attention the rich heritage of klezmer and Yiddish theater, and if this beautifully performed and produced recording is any indication of the value of the stage work, we should be seeing multiple traveling productions of A NIGHT IN THE OLD MARKETPLACE. Moody, atmospheric, extremely creative and of course, entertaining both theatrically and aurally. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, July 07

5 out of 5 stars these guys know what they're doing.......2001-02-22

If you can imagine this, combine wonderful neo-klezmer, Coltrane and Tyner, with a concept album akin to Seargent Pepper and you get Blood Oranges. The four musicians are incredibly talented, and play beautifully together. My 12 year old son loves this album-he is a jazz/rock bass player and had to show his (Daoist) teacher how cool this is. These guys are as good or better than the Klezmatics.

5 out of 5 stars This Is Not Your Zaide's Klezmer!.......1999-11-25

The musicians of Brave Old World describe their work as "New Jewish Music," and wonderful music it is. Although deeply rooted in the traditions of Eastern European klezmer, BOW refuses to limit themselves to an archaeological revival style. Instead they treat the idiom as part of an evolving musical form, open to influences from other traditions. The result is exciting, crisply executed, musically sophisticated stuff that is unmistakably Jewish, but joyfully embraces jazz ballads, salsa, and other genres as well. This is no recap of tradition, it's the next step.

Michael Alpert's performance as the group's vocalist and badchen (a kind of klezmic m.c.)shows great range and depth. BOW's muscianship is impeccable and they meld together in a way that seems to show deep mutual respect. Of the cuts on this album I thought "Homeland" -- the only vocal piece performed in English -- a little pretentious. Everything else was simply wonderful. "Uncle Elya" should become a jazz standard (I can imagine it sung by Billie Holiday) and if "The Band" doesn't get your foot tapping, nothing will.

In the fast-growing genre of klezmer-rooted new music, Brave Old World really stands out as innovators and this album shows them off at their best.

Album Description

Recorded live in Bordeaux, this is the first Brave Old World CD to appear on the prestigious Winter & Winter label, famous worldwide for the highest standards in recording quality, design, and concept.

Developed over the last 15 years, Song of the Lodz Ghetto is a unique musical work, a song cycle in which memory and imagination freely interact to create a Proustian journey between present and past. At the center are Brave Old World's arrangements of the rare Jewish street and cabaret songs from the Nazi ghetto of Lodz, Poland, 1940-44. Leading through the Lodz repertoire like stepping-stones through the river of memory are Brave Old World's own original compositions, reflections on 17 years of performing Jewish music. Michael Alpert's moving Berlin 1990 forms the emotional and musical counterpoint to the passionate and ironic street songs of the bard of the Lodz ghetto, Yankele Herszkowicz. A musical and spiritual journey of resistance, love, and reconciliation.

The superior recording quality of this CD is matched by outstanding cover art by Steve Byram and Warren Linn, as well as detailed song texts and liner notes in Yiddish, English, and German.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Bravo!! The Song of the Lodz Ghetto.......2007-05-25

Having both seen the performance of this material live and listened to this CD, I can say that the CD captures the performance very well. I am so glad that the performance has been preserved and can be disseminated in this way. I recommend the CD most highly as a passionate expression of the years-long ordeal and loss of the Holocaust. Excellent musicianship and dramatic presentation. This reminder of that high crime against humanity speaks with an eloquence beyond words to all who cherish justice and the preciousness of life. Unquestionably five stars.

5 out of 5 stars awesome!!! buy this!!!.......2005-12-17

This is a great CD by the best Klezmer band in the world!! I have been listening to Alan Bern's music since 1965 through all of its many variations, and with this performance he is clearly at the top of his game. I encourage everyone to buy a CD for themselves and more for their friends and family!!! Clearly a winner!!!

5 out of 5 stars Five stars is not high enough.......2005-07-23

Brave Old World has been performing this cycle of music based on songs written by Jews in the Lodz Ghetto during WWII. The rolling cadences of the band's music, and Michael Alpert's amazing voice make this a "must have" recording for anyone interested in wonderful, life-affirming Jewish music. Brave Old World have never sounded better - which given what an amazing band they are, live and in concert, is no small feat. Those interested in music from the Holocaust will also regard this as essential, on part with Adrienne Cooper and Zalmen Mlotek's "Ghetto Tango" released to great acclaim several years ago.

5 out of 5 stars A Magical Musical Journey Around the World with Mantovani........2005-02-23

The soaring strings of the original orchestra led by the late great Mantovani are once again presented in this brand new Vocalion release of two of the maestro's masterpiece recordings first released in 1964 (Folk Songs) and 1968 (Tango). Folk Songs from Around the World will charm and excite listeners with melodies as diverse as Aura Lee (what Elvis sang as Love Me Tender) and the sizzling sounds of Hava Nagila. The highly disciplined orchestra under the baton of Mantovani perform spectacular arrangements of "Two Guitars" from Russia and folk songs from Japan, Europe, and the British Isles arranged with such artistry that they will readily evoke from each listener intense emotions. The splendid orchestrations found on the Tango tracks also evoke a variety of emotions, with Whatever Lola Wants, Hernando's Hideaway and Takes Two to Tango, offering playful amusement, and such tracks as Blue Sky, Orange Vendor, and Tango Delle Rose combining captivating tango rhythms with time honored melodies made ever more delightful by the unique, cathedral sound identified exclusively with Mantovani. In an interview at the time of the Tango album's release, the ever perfectionist Mantovani expressed his delight with the musical outcome, noting that he tried "blending fine melodies with exciting rhythms to produce a sound that is stimulating.." Acquire this two CD-set, and new and old Mantovani fans will know the maestro was right on the mark in his assessment of this incomparable musical journey.

5 out of 5 stars Great Klezmer.......2007-01-29

The Klezmer Conservatory Band was formed at the New England Conservatory of Music in the early eighties, really just for a jam session of Jewish music. When they got requests to play at weddings and b'nai mitzvot, they realized they had something special and organized as a band. Along with the Klezmatics, KCB was one of the leaders of the modern klezmer revival. Klezmer Conservatory Band is more traditional, while the Klezmatics are a bit edgier. Many other groups have followed, and the roots are interconnected between many of the groups.

I am a fan of both the Klezmatics and the Klezmer Conservatory Band and have each of the ten KCB CD releases. This is one of their better CDs and has some true gems on it. With Judy Bressler as vocalist, KCB is truly something special - Judy brought beauty and comedy to the songs, as appropriate, and her voice became an integral instrument in many of their better songs. Though sadly, Judy has left the group, their recordings capture the spirit of American and Eastern European Jewish music at its best.

5 out of 5 stars Old World Beat.......2000-02-17

This collection of Klezmer music is alive and powerfully moving. You cannot help but sway uncontrollably to the hauntingly soulful melodies so skillfully rendered as to make musician and instrument ONE. Judy Bressler's vocals are full bodied, rich with the spirit of all that is truly Klezmer....Show me a person who listens to this album for the first time, and I'll show you a Klezmer fan for Life! L'chiam!

4 out of 5 stars Fairly good.......1999-03-31

While this was an average CD, track 4 (Watch Your Step) is one of the funniest songs I have heard in a while. It alone is worth the purchase of the CD. It takes a highly satirical look at the modern age.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Deal.......2007-01-13

An absolutely gorgeous recording from some world class musician/scholars. This is a must-have for any music collection, especially East European or klezmer. The booklet is superb as well - complete with a fine glossary of terms pertaining to klezmer.

5 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL KLEZMER FIDDL E & HAMMER DULCIMER MUSIC.......2000-08-31

Nowadays, when we think of klezmer-- the traditional instrumental music of the Ashkenazim (Yiddish-speaking Central and Eastern European Jewry)-- the main instrument that comes to mind is the clarinet. When we listen to the classic klezmer 78 rpm recordings from the first half of the 20th century, it's the wailing clarinet that stands out and leads the rest of the kapelye (klezmer ensemble). And it's the recorded legacy of the great early clarinetists-- Dave Tarras, Naftule Brandwein and Shloimke Beckerman, to name but a few-- that serves as the primary source and reference for most of today's klezmer musicians.

Yet, in recent years, there's has been a resurgence of interest in the older forms of klezmer, which were centered around the fidl(violin) and the tsmibl (hammer dulcimer). Beginning in the 1600s, up until the ascendency of the clarinet and military brass band instruments sometime in the late 19th century, the typical kaplye consisted of fidl, backed by a tsmibl and bowed bass or cello, occasionally augmented by a wooden transverse flute. If there were several fiddlers, the "ershter" (first violin) would play lead while the "tsveyter" (second violin) harmonizes in the lower register or plays a "secunda" rhythmic chordal accompaniment (standard practice in all forms of traditional fiddle music, regardless of ethnicity and region).

This album's title KHEVRISA is a Yiddish term which usually refers to a talmudic study group. Back in the Old World, klezmorim adopted it into their slang as another reference for a music group. In this case, both definitions are very appropriate: the chevrei (group members), led by the pioneering scholarship of Walter Zev Feldman, have pooled their own personal, extensive research into early klezmer traditions and their exceptional musical abilities to do this project. The result is a wonderful album of incredibly beautiful music-- unique, as the only modern klezmer recording to date that's devoted exclusively to traditional stringed instruments. It's supported by one of the best CD booklets I've ever encountered. Zev, one of the foremost authorities on Near Eastern, Balkan and klezmer music, has outdone himself on the amazingly comprehensive liner notes.

KHEVRISA's line-up reads like a "Who's Who" of the current klezmer revival's leading musician: Steven Greenman (ershter fidl), who was lead fiddler for BUDOWITZ, another excellent modern group devoted to 19th century klezmer music; Walter Zev Feldman (tsmibl), one of the pioneers of the klezmer revival; Alicia Svigals (tsveyter fidl), fiddler for the KLEZMATICS, one of today's hottest bands; Michael Alpert (sekunda fidl), fiddler/vocalist for BRAVE OLD WORLD, who studied with Leon Schwartz (1901-1990), one of the last tradition-bearers of the old European klezmer fiddle tradition; and Stuart Brotman (bass), who plays bass and tsimbl for BRAVE OLD WORLD, a world-class group that performs both traditional and modern klezmer music.

One note: those expecting the typical "tumeldik" (rowdy) freilachs may be disappointed -- the approach here is more chamber orchestra than dance band. Violinist Steve Greenman, while a "serious performer of Hungarian Nota, Romanian Gypsy, and Slovak music" in addition to klezmer, comes from a classical music background. This is very apparent in his very tight, smooth-like-glass performance style. Actually, Steve's classical sound has more in common with the conservatory-trained Eastern European "folk" violinists of today, than with the traditional fiddlers of the past that he's attempting to emulate. Even still, his use of "krechts" (lit. "cries") and other traditional melodic ornamentation is spot-on, while, overall, the group's thoughtful musical arrangements convey a "ma'mahsh Yiddishe tam" (genuine Jewish flavor).

Taking all this into consideration, I heartily recommend this CD as one of the finest albums to come out of the klezmer revival.
