Album Description

One of the brightest and most famous projects of the entire punk/new wave scene, No New York was released in 1978 on Island's sub-label Antilles and became a total cult in the Indie scene. Featuring some of the most incredible rule-breaking bands of the underground New York art and music scene, the project, produced by Brian Eno, is a genuine snapshot of the massively creative NYC scene, from which innumerable trends started and became part of the modern pop music as we know it. Influential, powerful and ground breaking, this collection features four of the top icon-shattering Gotham City's no-wavers like James Chance (Contortions), Arto Lindsay and Ikue Mori (DNA), Lydia Lunch (Teenage Jesus) and Sumner Crane (MARS). This is the first time No New York has ever been released in the West. This CD digi-pak version includes a detailed booklet. The musical legacy of this collection runs right from the Swans and Sonic Youth straight through to Glenn Branca, Jon Spencer and all the current crop of New Wave Of No New Wave outfits (such as The Rapture, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, etc..) burning up hipster dance floors worldwide! 16 total tracks. Lilith. 2005.

...but difficult. I bought this one on vinyl but a few years after it acme out. While it is rightly recognized as a classic since it documents Brian Eno's production of the more important band of the No Wave scene, it is slightly difficult to listen to at moments.

5 out of 5 stars american music.......2006-07-13

wilder than louise armstrong of the hot 5's, more adventurous than miles davis in agartha, more rock than the millions and millions of american garage bands since 1960. i was there. this is it.

5 out of 5 stars The finest album of its kind, 4 NY No Wave bands' finest.......2006-01-13

This album is legendary. So much so there was a Yes L.A. album about 1981 with X and some other bands on nice clear vinyl. Somehow when Eno produced the music here of all 4 bands he was able to have them make clearly their own music, ie, a good producer who enhances the band's qualities rather than try to contort them for mass consumption or to the producer's musical style.

As with all great punk compilations this is really the equivilent of 4 great eps. There is not a weak song on this comp. If you listen to the entire catalogs of each band I think it's fair to say this is the best stuff each band ever did, although I'm not gonna make a big deal about it particularly because each band also did marvelous other releases. TEENAGE JESUS and the JERKS, DNA and Mars each ended up only doing another half hour to an hour's worth of music, all together on some 12"s and 7"s and, come to think of it, none of the three of them even did one album (not counting the reissue albums of recent years that are a collection of their 7"s, eps, 12"s and compilation trax).

Of course, JAMES CHANCE and the CONTORTIONS/JAMES WHITE and the BLACKS did a number of albums over the years, mainly in the 80's and, if you ask me, the earliest ones were the best.

Sure, this isn't hardcore punk. It's not anything I ever heard come out of England or any other punk producing country either (Spain, Finland, Italy, Brasil, Japan, Australia, Canada and, of course, the U.S. among others). This album is filled with that high falutin' high class, sophisticated attitude. It's a New York thing baby. In punk, as in rock 'n roll before big corporate music companies homogonized the U.S. scene, that is, say the 50's and earlier 60's, individual regions, sometimes even certain big cities, had their own scene and their own sound. In punk Boston had a big straight edge scene, D.C. flowed out of and around the Dischord label, S.F. had the DK's and bands that pushed the artistic envelop of punk, Austin! had a thriving scene that actually ended up sending a number of bands to S.F. - if I'm not mistaken MDC, DRI and some other big punk band. L.A., of course, and, really, even sections of Southern California with it's own little scenes like San Diego and Riverside and so on, had it's own sense and type of bands like BAD RELIGION, CHINA WHITE, X, CIRCLE JERKS, BLACK FLAG and so on. Some cities just produced say one big punk band like Phoenix had, well, JFA and the MEAT PUPPETS, SIN 34 from Tucson right? RHYTHM PIGS from El Paso, the BATTALION OF SAINTS from San Diego, and so on.

Well, I could go on. The point is, New York had this distinct scene that was all big city and these 4 bands got the spirit of the city right and they got their own name for their thing, No Wave.

If you haven't heard these bands it's:
JAMES CHANCE sax and sorta homage to JAMES BROWN time.
TEENAGE JESUS Lydia Lunch's intense vocals and defining grating guitar with tight band.
DNA trio with intense minimalism, harsh guitar and
MARS outdoing DNA and TEENAGE JESUS as the most harsh yet somehow usually riviting nearly industrial piledriving punk ever heard this side of THROBBING GRISTLE without really being industrial, sorta emotional industrial?

Go get it kids. This is a gotta have if you follow what I'm sayin' here. chrisbct@hotmail.com

If you need something to pump you up for the upcoming second edition of Sarah McLachlan's all-female touring festival, Lilith Fair: A Celebration of Women in Music is the ticket. This two-disc compilation features 25 live cuts from the inaugural trip. On first spin, it's hard not to notice the range and sheer power of the vocals here. Many of the artists give performances that eclipse their studio work. The most obvious example of this is the opening "Mississippi," where Paula Cole unleashes a voice larger than life. Predictably present is McLachlan's "Building a Mystery," the definitive Lilith song, which began its assault on the air waves at the start of last year's tour and, well, kept building. The house that Sarah built is still growing strong. Lilith Fair: A Celebration of Women in Music is satisfying proof. --Carla DeSantis

4 out of 5 stars Lilith Fair, Volume One.......2007-07-06

Many of the performers at Lilith Fair received far more attention, but it is hard to believe that any of them, in the course of their entire careers, will come close to equaling the stature or influence of the sublime Emmylou Harris. Pay close attention to her achingly rich and layered performance here of "Going Back to Harlan" and you get a taste of a singer of bottomless depth, intensity and genuine emotion. She is America at its most authentic and noble.

4 out of 5 stars From The Other Side.......2007-02-27

Maybe I'm too much of a male Chauvinist, but I was never very interested in the various Lilith Fairs. However, for some reason I picked up this CD (at the library - OK I'm cheap) and gave it a listen. It's really quite good overall, albeit a bit uneven. I've listened to it for a while now and it wears quite well.

The Editorial Review above says "Many of the artists give performances that eclipse their studio work" and that's certainly true for Joan Osborne. Her "Ladder" is definitely one of the best live performances I've ever heard. She's a great singer and she had a helluva band backing her up that day. (BTW, one of the other great live songs is "Naked Eye" by Luscious Jackson on Lilith vol. 3.)

Other particularly good songs on this CD are: "Sur Tes Pas" - Autour De Lucie; "I Want" - Dayna Manning; "Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner" - September 67; "Cain" - Patty Griffin; "I Don't Want To Think About It" - Wild Strawberries. I hadn't heard anything by any of these artists before, so I consider this quite a find.

In sum, a nice double CD with a nice range of unique works. As of this writing, it's available as "new" for $3.34 + s/h! Definitely worth it.

3 out of 5 stars Some great tracks, but disappointing overall.......2006-07-29

I bought this after hearing great reports about the Lilith Fair. This CD, however, does not match up with those reports. CD #1 is blah until Susanna Hoff's "Eternal Flame" and Sarah McLachlan's "Building a Mystery". CD #2 is an improvement, beginning with the outstanding "Water is Wide". The rest of CD #2 pales in comparison, though. If you have access to online music source, just download those 3 tracks and forget the rest.

3 out of 5 stars Lilith Fair Live.......2006-03-13

This recording was recommended by a friend and it would be true to say that there are some exceptional duets on the CD that make it worth while. It is a celebration of women in music and because of that there are some bands that I had not heard of before. Whilst it is good to expose people to different bands some of the musicians/songs were not 'my cup of tea' (so I consequently hit the forward button), but you never know they may grow on me. Overall I due enjoy this CD and certainly enjoy the majority of the songs.

3 out of 5 stars ok but.......2004-04-22

this band is ok, but for good music check out Jean Luc-Ponty.

A document of the 1998 tour, Lilith Fair: A Celebration of Women in Music, Vol. 3 is thus far the most lively and affecting recording of Sarah McLachlan's summer festival. From the percussive chop-socky blues of Emmylou Harris's "Deeper Well" to Holly Cole's richly intoned "Onion Girl" to Sixpence None the Richer's quirky take on the pop hit "Kiss Me" to Rebekah's sparsely searing "Little Black Girl," the women presented here are fierce, fiery, and fabulously fruitful. Included also are Suzanne Vega's late-'80s signature song, "Luka," the Indigo Girls' banjo porch rocker "Get Out the Map," and N'dea Davenport's sultry-smooth "Underneath a Red Moon." While some notable '98 participants lack representation here (where are Paula Cole, Missy Elliot, and Lucinda Williams?), this volume is a proud achievement of fine production and optimal sequencing, and the performances are of greater diversity than offered previously. --Paige La Grone

4 out of 5 stars Lilith Ladies do not Dissapoint.......2005-07-21

While all of the songs on this record are outstanding and fun to hear live, Liz Phair's "Never Said" is a radio classic. Her first real recognition came from this song which helped make her an indie princess. An awesome buy.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the first!.......2001-01-13

I got this CD last night and have listened to it 6 times since, it is that good!!!! Luka is a depressingly excellent song, and Get Out The Map is cute and country-ish. It is so ecclectic and broad. My favorite songs are probably Luka, Get Out the Map, Naked Eye, and Never Said. If you are a fan of female music, buy this, you won't be dissapointed!

2 out of 5 stars Sixpence makes this CD none the richer.......2000-03-22

Holly and Sarah are great. Many of the artists are edgy and mature. But "Kiss Me" by Sixpence is an example of the sappy shallowness that this CD gets stuck in. Two stars is generous. Reissue this without the Sixpence track.

1 out of 5 stars McLachlan & Cole save this CD-, however, sonically it sucks.......1999-10-11

I demand some reasonable effort by producers to do a decent job of recording music, and ARISTA seems, in general, to be subpar on most of their releases. However, this seems to be worse than their average. While they can blame it on this being a live album -- it's a poor excuse. If you have any audiophile tendencies, don't buy this CD -- although the music is reasonably good, the shabby job of recording/transferring to CD format will leave you disappointed and wanting your money back.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......1999-09-05

I was give Volume 2 and I thought it was good. I decided to go see how Volume 3 was. I loved it! In my opinion even better then the Volume 2! It has a wide variety of songs that all sound great. i loved Sarah's "Black and White". It's amazing!

Tom Jones' career as the king of crooners has spanned over four decades. Like Sinatra, Elvis, or the Beatles, you can not define Tom by comparing him to anyone else, he is simply Tom Jones. So perhaps it is fitting that throughout his career he has always been drawn to the music of the Beatles, and his cover versions of the Fab Four have become classics in their own right.

To understand this review, take a look at the reviews of the other volumes in this series...
Some of the music on this series is so weird and beautiful that the composers should be grateful that it is released here. They should think of this series as a sampler which might atract us, the general public, into further investigation of their work, which we most probably would have never had the chance to hear it or become aware of its existence or of the composers/artists. Don't be so greedy... for I believe you have been done a favor. The same goes for the other volumes of this series. TWO THUMBS UP!

Similar in scope to Lilith Fair: A Celebration of Women in Music, which captures the inaugural tour, the 1998 festival is presented on volumes 2 and 3, with each disc available separately this time around. Volume 2 offers a large dose of the folksy acoustic fare we've come to associate with VH-1 (i.e., Natalie Merchant, Lisa Loeb, Shawn Colvin), with a side helping of angry-young-woman rock (Tracy Bonham, Sinead O'Connor, Holly McNarland) and an assortment of other performers. While wholly enjoyable, the standouts are Queen Latifah's diva-style dish on "Life," O'Connor's impassioned "Fire of Babylon," Angelique Kidjo's West African pop tune "Never Know," and Emmylou Harris's duet with Sarah McLachlan on "Angel," which transports the Surfacing hit to realms heretofore unrealized. --Paige La Grone

      2 out of 5 stars VERY Eclectic.......2003-07-26

All of the performances found on this CD are good live versions of songs from good artists. I never attended the Lilith Fair when it was around so I didn't know what to expect when I checked this CD out; I picked it up soley for the names I recognized and liked (Sarah McLachlan, Natalie Merchant, etc.). After listening to this though I found that I didn't really like most of the songs. Not that they were bad songs or poorly performed but that this album's collection of artists was just too eclectic for my tastes. I'm not a rap fan at all so Queen Latifah's addition wasn't my favorite and the album wasn't stickered despite Tracy Bonham's lyrics. Because of my disappointment I have to give this 2 stars. If you went to the fair and only watched the performances from performers you liked then I'd suggest trying to check this out from your local library. 2 out of 5 stars listenable but not really worth the money.......2002-08-07

No passionate or inspired musical performances here, just a bunch of females trying to prove something and some ... female-supporting male musicians to help them.

4 out of 5 stars It grows on you.......2001-02-16

I wrote a review for this CD several months ago, saying I didn't like it apart from a few songs. After that, I put the CD away. I recently brought it out again, put it in the CD player, and realized "Hey, there's some good stuff on here." I didn't like it at first. Now I love it. If you are wanting to try some Lilith Fair, my advice would be to borrow this from someone... Listen to the whole thing a few times, even if you don't like it the first time. For some odd reason, it just grows on you till you are playing it nonstop.

5 out of 5 stars The Best "Sampler".......2000-12-14

This is my favorite CD of 2000. If you like female vocalists (Sarah) this is a must have. Worth it just for Bic Runga's "Sway" not to mention all the other great songs.

      3 out of 5 stars Nice.......2000-10-26

To be honest, I wouldn't have gotten this CD if it wasn't for 'Angel' and 'I Do,' the only songs on here that I have heard. I was introduced to some more Natalie Merchant, which was nice. This version of 'Angel' is wonderful. I love the extra piano parts. Personally, I think Sarah doesn't need anyone to sing with her, and (don't jump on me for saying this) I think it would have been better without Emmylou. But it is great. 'I Do' is even better live. The only other song on here that I really liked was 'In the Ghetto,' but I do want to get the other Lilith Fair CDs just so I can hear some other Sarah McLachlan songs live. Okay, sorry for rambling: the bottom line is that most of the songs on here are not very much like Sarah McLachlan, so if you are, like me, a Sarah fan that just wanted to check out some other female singers in that genre... I wouldn't recommend Lilith Fair Vol. 2.

Tim Hardin and band are captured here in a fiery performance recorded live in NYC at the Town Hall on April 8, 1968. Although Hardin never achieved mainstream success, his unique voice made him one of the most talented & influential singer-songwriters of the period. Lilith. 2006.

        5 out of 5 stars THE PEAK.......2006-11-08

This is one of the finest vocal performances ever captured on tape, by anyone, in any genre. I have yet to recover from hearing it for the first time in 1968 and I am so pleased that it has been re-issued with superior sound in this release. Tim exposes the very heart of these songs. So, unless you've heard the versions contained here-in,you really haven't heard these songs. This is truely an awesome and emotionally brutal performance by a guy who knew he was killing himself, but couldn't stop.

5 out of 5 stars It will sadly never happen no more: "live" or is it "unplugged"?.......2006-10-19

This CD includes all the tracks from Tim Hardin's third LP for the Verve/Forecast label (1968) with the addition of four previously unreleased outtakes (# 5, # 14 - 16).
The three latter tracks are outstanding and hold their own against the more sophisticated versions that Hardin would later re-cut for the Columbia label.
The former tune, titled "Turn the Page", sounds average to me. Moreover, it disrupts the original sequencing of the album.

On all of the tracks, Hardin is supported by a crack band of renowned jazz pros turned session musicians (Eddie Gomez, Mike Mainieri, Warren Bernhardt and Donald MacDonald). Lead guitar is played by a little known folk guitarist called Daniel Hankin (who also played on Karen Dalton's first LP).

Ten of the tracks are reprised from the material that Hardin had recorded for his first two Verve/Forecast classic studio albums (Tim Hardin 1 and Tim Hardin 2.) I like these two superb albums very, very much.

However, the reprised songs as performed on Tim Hardin 3 suggest that more room was available to Hardin to use unscored collaborative arrangements created "on the spot" by the supporting musicians and himself (these are usually called "head" arrangements). Thanks to the different arrangements, all these well known songs glow with a wholly new, quietly effective jazzy feel. The plaintive tone of Hardin's voice throughout the album is perfectly suited to the new interpretations.

"Lenny's Tune" is a splendid new tune that is a focal point from this album (Nico would cut it for her first LP (Chelsea Girl) whilst "Danville Dame" is a very good new version of an early demo taped at a 1964 audition for Columbia.

Tim Hardin's views about the importance of jazz in his music are emphasized in the (original) liner notes authored by Down Beat jazz contributor Michael Zwerin. I am convinced that these versions are arguably more in line with Tim Hardin's original perception of the sound that he wanted to achieve to begin with. So, this CD is highly recommended to all those fans who feel moved by the two first Verve/Forecast albums and are ready for another, equally valid presentation.

Listen, for example, to the delicate playing of the supporting musicians on "Green Rocky Rock" and compare it with the original, already good but rockier studio recording on "Tim Hardin 1"; this version is much less overpowering, there is much more "air" left all around the music and Hardin's vocal.
The "live" versions of "Lady Came from Baltimore" and "You Upset the Grace of Living When You Lie" are far less poppy than the original, string-arranged studio recordings from "Tim Hardin 2".

Thanks to Brooks Arthur, a noted engineer and future Grammy award winner, the sound quality is really good with some "sonic bugs" intently inserted to convey the ambience of a real live recording (whatever that is!). There is a severe, but very short, burst of distortion at the beginning of the first track; musical "glitches" appear at various moments into the deeply moving and heartfelt rendering of "Tribute to Lenny Bruce"; rattling guitar strings and cracks in Hardin's voice are heard on the otherwise good "Don't Make Promises That You Can't Keep". This implies, incidentally, that most of the tracks were NOT actually recorded at Town Hall as claimed.

The same trick was also used by Verve on the first "live" recording by "The Blues Project" at the same purported location (as reported by Al Kooper himself). All the remaining tracks sound better, feature tighter playing as well as more confident and impressive vocals from Hardin himself.

What we really end up with is more akin to an "unplugged" recording. And mighty fine it is!
