Really, really, REALLY BAD!.......2006-11-22

Bought and returned it with the first few minutes after sliding it into the player. The cover art is nice. As for the, um, muzak, I expected something less...fuzzy. Even the player hated it, spitting it out within seconds after tasting the first track.
If any of the original movie scores rate 5 stars, this rates a solid 10 black holes, IMHO.

Deceptive Title & Trade Dress.......2006-07-27

The title line of this product says Enya (Composer), Roma Enya / Ryan (Composer), Annie / Walsh, Fran / Shore, Howard Lennox (Composer), Howard Shore (Composer), Fran Shore Howard / Walsh (Composer). Had I read the descriptions more closely, I would have seen that the composers were listed in a way that made no sense. Rather, the list merely is composed of the names of the writers, musicians, and composers of the music in Peter Jackson's trilogy, so that someone who is familiar with the music of the trilogy would be deceived into buying this subpar and inadequate product. The trade dress is deceptive enough that it might border on trademark/trade dress infringment of the real stuff.
If you are a fan of the LOTR soundtracks and/or Howard Shore, I would avoid this product and opt for: 1) the official soundtracks of the trilogy; and 2) The Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring The Complete Recordings. Let's hope they follow up with the Two Towers and the Return of the King Complete Recordings.

This was a major disappointment.......2006-06-21

Too bad I can't give this one no stars. This disk is really bad. The performance is by a bland synthesizer "orchestra" without any of the depth or emotion you can find on the movie soundtracks. I would sell this CD back to the music store where I bought it, but then somebody else might be tempted to buy it. No; this disk is headed for the trash bin.

Not worth your money.......2006-05-14

Simply put, this album corrupts Howard Shore's music in the same way the ring tried to corrupt Frodo. The more you listen to it, the more you realize you should have bought the original soundtrack.

LOTR meets New Age.......2005-10-01

I wish I had read the other reviews before buying. 78 minutes of meandering through (and maiming) Howard Shore's fantastic work. No focus, no edge to the playing, themes apparently put together at random. The horns are poorly synthesized and sound pretty cheezy. Spend your money on the movie soundtrack. I wish I had.

Promo says recorded by "Big Movie Orchestra" but it sounds more like a couple of synthesizers. The "strings" are OK but anything on brass or wind sounds AWFUL. Some tracks are not even on pitch. Seller would not refund, either - adding insult to injury! Now it's a handsome coaster for my desk!

Danny Gatton was a truly exceptional musician--one of the world's greatest guitar players--period. When he passed on 10 years ago, people who play guitar--and people who just appreciate guitar music--mourned deeply--they still do.

"Portraits" is yet another reminder of what music lovers have lost, because it is a remarkable CD. From his opening R & B take on the classic "Rambunctious" to the three, live closing cuts, including a blistering "Orange Blossom Medley", Danny demonstrates his incredible versatility with blues, jazz and rock n' roll. Another highlight on this CD is "Lotta Lovin' ", Danny's tribute to those exciting rock n' roll pioneers, Gene Vincent and his Bluecaps--on this cut, Danny shows that he can play rockabilly guitar with the best of them--really outstanding !

If you are already a Gatton fan, and don't have this disc, push the "buy immediately" button ! If you like superb guitar playing and--somehow--are not familiar with the "Master of the Telecaster", you are not just in for a treat--get ready for a revelation ! Musicianship of the highest order !

Portrait of a Genius.......2000-09-23

Without a doubt, Danny Gatton was a musical genius: not only did he have flawless technique, but he had vast musical knowledge, a keen melodic sense, exquisite taste, fantastic rhythmic drive, and the rare ability to know when not to play. The CD is 5 stars from first to last, but my personal favorites are "Pretty Blue", a cooler, more elegant blues you'll never hear, and the live versions of "Linus and Lucy" which segues into "Orange Blossom Medley", which contains non-stop 9 minutes of the best guitar playing you will ever hear. Starting with a fast country 2-beat, Danny plays C&W guitar like only he could, then the band eases into a easy 4-beat shuffle, and Danny starts playing the best blues guitar this side of the Appalachians, or any mountain range for that matter, the band keeping up with him beautifully, and it all ends humorously. BUY THIS AND ENJOY !!!

For this project the band came up with the idea to use the original charts for the big bands they were playing a tribute to. This is not a bad idea for with our modern technology, it stands to reason that the sound of a new recording would be fantastic. Wow! This band created a knock out sound. They accomplished their goal.

This band is a fine compliation of musicians. They all played together really well and used a high engery approach. I can't get over their total sound and individual sound. They are great!

The repertoire used was a good one. They did play a few songs that I didn't like or know. This was the only dark side to this cd. All and all I think this is a cd to be proud of.

Great British Big Band.......2003-11-21

During the 1930s, the finest dance bands - as opposed to swing bands - were in England. They played a style of music that combined both hot and sweet elements. The key bands were led by Ray Noble, Bert Ambrose, and Lew Stone, and their only comparable American counterparts were the Casa Loma Orchestra and Isham Jones's band. To many aficianados, the greatest British band was Lew Stone's.

Lew Stone's band, at various times, contained such fine artists as Nat Gonella (trumpet and vocal), Lew Davis (trombone), Joe Crossman (reeds), Tiny Winters (bass), Bill Harty (drums), Al Bowlly (vocal), and Sam Browne (vocal). Lew Stone wrote most of the arrangements, which were generally excellent. My only criticism is that, when the Swing Era began, the band played that style a little too politely in comparison with American swing bands.

The band's sweet style is heard on "I'll Never Be the Same," "Close Your Eyes" (featuring Al Bowlly at his mellowest), and "East of the Sun." The outstanding hot cuts are "Blue Jazz" and "White Jazz" (both from the Casa Loma repertoire), as well as "Lazy Rhythm" and "Milenburg Joys." "Dinner and Dance" and "Wednesday Night Hop" are examples of the band's polite swing style. "My Kind of Music" is, on the surface, an upbeat celebration of the joys of "London town." In fact, it was recorded during the Battle of Britain, when London was being bombed ... on a daily basis, which makes it a poignant historical document.

If you are a fan of British dance bands, this music needs no introduction. If you are a fan of American big bands, I recommend this disk. The music will be in a familiar language, spoken with a slightly different accent.
