Steven Gorn, his American disciple renowned for both his solo work and for his work with Glen Velez, concludes the recording with his rendition of the late night Rag Jog, illustrating the transmission from guru to disciple of this timeless musical tradition. Tabla accompaniment is provided by Samir Mazumder and Ray Spiegel. Digitally re mastered under the direction of Steven Gorn.

Simply the most achingly beautiful performance of music I have ever heard. These serene rags, as rendered by Sachdev, are as pure an embodiment of life's longing for its own heart as you are ever likely to hear. Sachdev is at one with his instrument, and the result is beauty almost unmediated. Is it possible for a human to play an instrument better than he plays the bansuri?

Excellent backdrop ffor meditation.......2005-08-30

I searched long and hard for flute music not contaminated with distracting complexity. This music is honest and true. I listen to this CD every day and still often find myself admiring its aplomb.

Even beyond ... beyond.......2007-02-04

This is truly magnificent. It's kind of an exquisite, intimate self-dialogue/monologue, but you don't really know ... who is playing whom. The flute in itself is truly alive ... and somehow ... Hariprasad seems just to hold it in his hands ... and on his lips. And then sound ... Voice ... happens. And then it's called 'music' ... but - it's so much more ... than even ... beyond.

Does anybody know if there is more of this special kind of 'music' out there ... either of Hariprasad Chaurasia or any other flautist ? - You could write it here in this review section, and I can check-in every now and then.
I would be grateful.
Hariprasad's "Healing Music for Ayurveda" is also enjoyed very much, but, maybe somehow ... it doesn't reach quite as deep(or beyond) as "Flying Beyond". - Anyway, it's very beautiful too.

This is the single most sublime and transcendant musical work that I have ever come across. Meditative and serene and assured at every turn of every phrase. Whether intensely listened to or held in the background, this album never fails to delight.

Soul-stirring rendition of Raga Malkauns.......2004-05-01

This album has a brilliant elaboration of Raga Malkauns which an ancient Indian Classical melody that evokes the mood of devotion and introspection. The ablums unfolds Malkauns in three phases - alap, jod, and jhala - played in Dhrupad style.
There is no tabla (percussion) accompaniment. Especially suited to create a peaceful and meditative ambience. I had gifted this album to a friend of mine who liked it so much that he has heard it more than 3500 times in the past 12 years. Indeed, this album is so well-played that you might end up being a die-hard fan of the raga (Malkauns) or the maestro Hariprasad Chaurasia. May be both!

This is a wonderful album that I listen to almost daily for meditaion, relaxation and as inspiration while I paint.

Although Steve Gorn and Benjy Wertheimer had not yet met, they'd been hearing about each other for nearly 20 years. Finally,in January of 2001, Krishna Das invited them both to Los Angeles to record on his CD, "Breath of the Heart." During breaks in the recording schedule, they instantly began to play together. Music without words...esraj and flute weaving the melodic contours of a raga...flute and tabla meeting in a spontaneous rhythmic dance. It was clearly the beginning of a deep and powerful musical relationship. The bond and mutual respect grew as they toured the Northwestin 2002-03, and culminated with this recording of Indian ragas,along with an original piece for esraj and clarinet. About The Ragas The musical form at the heart of traditional Indian classical music, the raga or (or "rag," in modern Hindi/Urdu) has its roots in the Sanskrit "ranj," which means "to color." It is sometimes said,"that which colors the mind is the raga." A raga defies simple definition. More than a scale, mode, tune or melody, it is a combination of elements-such as the modal structure, including the ascending and descending movement; the emphasis or avoidance of certain notes; the characteristic movements and motifs (the heart of the raga); the time of day or season; and the moods of the raga. These improvisational pieces were recorded live in the studio. To honor the form, they were improvised within the specific musical structure of each raga. Rag Desh: Traditionally played at night, Rag Desh (which translates to "country") is also known as a rainy season raga. The primary moods expressed are devotion, romance and longing. Rag Madhuvanti: The word "madhu" means honey, and the sweetness of honey flows like a river through this raga. Rag Madhuvanti belongs to the group of late afternoon ragas, and was most likely created in the 1920s.
