After reading previous customer reviews, I don't think I can articulate Bija's beauty in words any better. So, I just wanna echo their compliments and recommendations on this CD, a marvelous (possibly underated) musical accomplishment.

Seeds of Prayer is a good title for this CD. The
tracks are long enough (5-10 minutes) to develop the
mood of the ragas used in a powerful, concise, deeply
emotional, and spiritual manner. Jan's singing is
both very well trained and quite from the heart. John
plays many different hindustani string and percussion
instruments with grace, authentic style, and versitality.
Several other musicians are also featured on various
tracks and make important contributions as well. Both of
them obviously have had well rounded training in authentic
hindustani classical music. Each track is unique, featuring
different ragas, different religious traditions, and different
combinations of instruments and/or voice. I have about 3 dozen
CD-s of hindustani classical music, but this one has been
getting the most play lately. The music is quite accessible
yet very accomplished, and I think it would appeal to those
who are not accustomed to this style of music as well as those
immersed in it.

I thoroughly enjoy listening to this excellent album. The singer and the musicians are gifted, highly trained, and passionate about their art. The vocalist's voice has to be heard to be believed. She has excellent voice control and expressivity. I have traveled extensively in India and I can tell you that it would be hard to find more consumate artists anywhere in the world.
The music on Seeds of Prayer is fine for meditation, or as ambient music, but I believe it is best appreciated when attentively followed. Tune in to the devotional mood, the beautiful poetry, and the artistry of the performers. I think it will appeal to listeners of all ages. Soothing, inspiring, amazing, exciting, wonderful, spiritual music.

There is a Sanskrit word that almost adequately describes this album: The word is Kanti (Beauty enhanced by Love). Anyone even remotely attuned to the haunting, devotional sounds of Indian classical music will give thanks for discovering this brilliant first effort from Jan & John Protopapas. I had the pleasure of watching them perform live last night at a church in York, Pennsylvania. It is really hard to describe the sweep and scope of Jan's voice. At once, her singing takes you to a higher place, one that makes you smile and one that connects you to your own voice within. Her husband John plays the sitar on a par with any current master of the art that I have heard and I'm including Ravi Shankar and his daughter Anoushka (John played on stage with her in a performance in Reading last year).

I know that is quite a mouthful, so please allow me to go one step further. In the realm of devotional albums, one that has topped the list for me in recent years is the incredible collaboration of Ravi Shankar and George Harrison entitled "The Chants of India." This album was lovingly performed and produced to give a real flavor of what Indian devotional chanting is all about. In many significant ways I think "Seeds of Prayer" climbs even closer to the mountaintop from where I am standing. This album is just waiting to stir the flames of devotion in your heart and bring tears to your eyes from the sheer beauty of such accomplished artistry. The album includes traditional songs from several traditions but my favorite song is called "Capture the Essence" which is an original masterpiece from the hearts and souls of Jan and John Protopapas. I invite you to enjoy this musical gift to the world and hear what Love actually sounds like.
